SYRACUSE, N.Y. — The Syracuse Orange missed several redzone opportunities, turned the ball over at costly times and committed numerous penalties to undo all of their hard work against the Golden Bears. A game in which the offensive numbers looked far better for Syracuse ended in a Cal 21-18 win when Golden Bears safety Kingston Lopa housed a pick six for the eventual winning score with 4:51 left in the 4th quarter.
Syracuse started the game with the ball, and fireworks showed immediately. Tylik Hill ripped a 55 yard rush on the second play of the game to immediately put the Orange in a goal-to-go situation. Syracuse couldn't convert and settled for a Tripp Woody field goal to open the scoring at 3-0.
Cal set its intentions early by playing in empty sets for much of its first drive. Although the Golden Bears got a first down, impressive pressure from Keyshawn Johnson and Dillan Fontus on 3rd down stalled the first Cal drive before midfield.
Syracuse's second drive saw the return of Justus Ross-Simmons, newly eligible after a long and nervous legal battle. He snagged the first Orange reception of the day, going 22 yards up the right sideline. Shavane Anderson Jr. also started to show that his first week performance wasn't a fluke with a pair of good eight-yard gains to move the chains. The Orange had to punt, however, to end their second drive of the day.

California football is on display in their ACC-opener, as the Golden Bears travel across the country, nearly 2,500 miles, entering a Week 2 matchup with Syracuse at the JMA Wireless Dome.
Cal is still in search of getting its first tally in the win column for first-year head coach Tosh Lupoi following their Week 1 loss against UCLA, 45-24.
There were many things to look back on for Cal between what went wrong, what went right and what they could've done better to give themselves a fighter's chance at taking down UCLA.

In 18 games for Syracuse (13 starts), Weisenburger has a 6.68 ERA over 62 innings pitched, with 53 strikeouts to 34 walks and eight home runs allowed.
Devenski split time between the Mets and Pirates organizations this season, and in six appearances for the Mets was more or less fine until his last appearance against the Marlins, where he was responsible for five of the runs in the Mets' wild 15-14 dub on Wednesday. The 35 year old veteran has a 13.50 ERA for the Mets this season, and an 11.74 ERA across both clubs in the majors.
With a little more than a week left in the Triple-A season and Syracuse two and a half games out of a playoff spot, Devenski will have plenty of opportunity for some innings before, potentially, rejoining the Mets if the need arises.
The second half of the Subway Series with the Yankees starts tonight at 7:05pm on PIX11 with Nolan McLean facing off against Carlos Rodón.

The Oklahoma Sooners hit the road for the first time in 2026 on Saturday afternoon. OU heads to Ann Arbor to take on the Michigan Wolverines in the Big House in Week 2.
Michigan went 9-4 last year, but the Wolverines have changed a lot since then. Former head coach Sherrone Moore was fired at the end of the regular season, with Biff Poggi serving as the interim head coach. Michigan hired former Utah head coach Kyle Whittingham as the new head man on December 26th.
Whittingham coached Utah from 2005 to 2025, posting a 177-88 record as the head man of the Utes. His teams won three conference ****** les and played in three more conference ****** le games. The Wolverines were looking for a stable presence in the wake of everything that happened with Moore and his predecessor Jim Harbaugh, and they certainly got that in the veteran Whittingham. He'll square off with Oklahoma head coach Brent Venables in a huge game for both programs.
Michigan won at home last week against Western Michigan, 13-12. That victory came in controversial fashion, as the Wolverines were given an extra second on the clock after it appeared the game was over. Michigan used that second to throw a Hail Mary that was caught for the win. After escaping by the slimmest of margins, the Wolverines will certainly play a lot better on Saturday than they did last week.
On offense, Venables will be matched up against offensive coordinator Jason Beck, who came over with Whittingham. Beck has led strong offenses at New Mexico in 2024 and at Syracuse in 2023. SOUTH BEND — Forty-two weeks since suffering the second left ACL tear of his career, Notre Dame football linebacker Kyngstonn Viliamu-Asa could return this week against Rice in the home opener.
"Kyngstonn's done a great job," Notre Dame coach Marcus Freeman said Thursday, Sept. 10 on his Zoom update. "He's practiced well. He'd been working to the point where he can play. He's had a really good week of practice. Right now, we're optimistic he'll be able to go on Saturday and be able to help us some."
The junior standout from Inland Empire, CA wore his Shamrock Series jersey but otherwise was in civilian clothes for the season-opening win over Wisconsin on Sunday, Sept. 6.
Viliamu-Asa appeared to practice throughout August at near full capacity as he worked back from the Senior Day injury against Syracuse last Nov. 22.
A preseason All-America candidate, Viliamu-Asa averaged 40 defensive snaps per game in his 11 outings last season. He tied for fourth on the team with 48 tackles and ranked second with 7.5 tackles for loss, including three sacks.

The Mets are promoting pitching prospect Gary Gill Hill from Double-A Binghamton to Triple-A Syracuse, the team announced on Sunday.
Gill Hill joined the Mets organization as part of the trade that sent Freddy Peralta to the Tampa Bay Rays at this year's trade deadline and had pitched well with the Rumble Ponies. In five starts, the right-hander went 2-0 with a 3.76 ERA (1.22 WHIP) and struck out 28 batters over 26.1 innings.
Overall, the 21-year-old has a 4.34 ERA in 25 starts between High-A, where he began the season, and Double-A.
New York's No. 19 overall prospect, according to SNY, Gill Hill's last start in Binghamton came on Sept. 1, which puts him on schedule to make his debut for Syracuse soon.
The promotion comes after the Mets recalled Jonah Tong from Triple-A to the big leagues, leaving a spot open in the starting rotation.

Tong will start in Miami against the Marlins, and the 23-year-old could be in line to pitch in next weekend's Subway Series at Yankee Stadium as part of a young rotation that includes Nolan McLean, Christian Scott and Zac Thornton.

Ards, a Texas A&M commit ranked No. 10 on the USA Today Florida Network top 100, and the defensive line put on a show in the Tigers win on Sept. 5.
The 6-foot-4 ½, 220-pound four-star edge rusher recorded three sacks — using a different technique for each one — and had at least two tackles for loss against Evans and its Maryland quarterback commit, William Jackson.

The Chargers cut their roster from 90 to 53 with a little over a week until the start of the 2026 season.
Los Angeles has found the 53 men who they believe will contribute in a big way, and one of those 53 is former undrafted linebacker Marlowe Wax. Wax made a name for himself last season after not hearing his name during the 2025 NFL Draft. Still, he made the team.
Prior to the 2026 season, Wax was on the roster bubble, but after a strong preseason performance, there was little doubt he'd be left out. According to Pro Football Focus, Wax graded out as the highest-graded Charger from the 2026 preseason.
PFF graded him out at 90.9.
"Wax was an undrafted free agent out of Syracuse last year and was solid in the 2025 preseason. He was even better this year, though, improving his PFF preseason grades in both run-defense and coverage. He tallied six tackles resulting in a defensive stop and had a pass breakup over the past three weeks."

I think the Orange will keep things vanilla but last week UAlbany averaged over 7 yards per carry against UNH. This means Syracuse should be able to control the line of scrimmage and chew up yardage without having to show any new wrinkles before they face Cal. On defense, I'm watching to see how Vince Kehres has his defense attack the running game of his opponent. Can the Syracuse front seven get into the backfield and force the Wildcats into obvious passing situations?

I'll take the other offensive category featuring a vastly different cast than last year. With both Justus Ross-Simmons and Tyshawn Russell not in the two-deep for Week 1, I'm intrigued to see who in the room takes first steps towards being a prominent target this season. UNC (1-0) entered its Week Zero matchup vs. TCU as a touchdown-plus underdog, rightfully so considering the trajectory of each team's 2025 season. The Tar Heels traded punches with every first quarter blow from the Horned Frogs, then shut down their typically high-powered offense.

Four-star small forward Carson Crawford has committed to Arizona State, he told Rivals.
The 6-foot-6 senior out of Fleming Island (FL) is ranked as the No. 47 overall recruit in the 2027 class and the No. 12 ranked small forward, according to the Rivals Industry Ranking, an average of all three major recruiting media companies (Rivals, ESPN, 247Sports).
Crawford is a strong pickup for new Sun Devils coach Randy Bennett, who arrived in Tempe this offseason after 25 years at Saint Mary's, where he became the program's all-time winningest coach with 589 wins and led the Gaels to 12 NCAA Tournament appearances.
Along with Arizona State, Crawford received offers from Florida State, Ole Miss, Providence, Syracuse, and others.

Penn State football finally kicks off for the 2026 season this weekend and there is a lot to be excited about. The program is gaining momentum as a College Football Playoff contender in the first year under new head coach Matt Campbell thanks to a relatively light schedule.
That favorable 12-game slate opens with a matchup against Marshall, a team that the Nittany Lions haven't faced in nearly a century. Fans of the team likely don't keep track of what's going on with Thundering Herd football, so we did the work of scoring the opposition for them.
After doing the research, the most dangerous player on the offensive side of the ball appears to be quarterback Carlos Del Rio-Wilson. None of his passing stats jump off the screen with 2,047 yards and 17 touchdowns last season. But it's his dual-threat ability that makes him frightening.
He also ran for 660 yards and added six touchdowns on the ground, so he can hurt Penn State's defense in a variety of ways. It might be a good idea to keep a spy around the line of scrimmage just in case Del Rio-Wilson has plans of running around Saturday afternoon.

With active rosters expanding from 26 to 28 players now that it's September, the Mets have recalled outfielder Nick Morabito and right-handed relief pitcher Dylan Ross from Triple-A Syracuse.
Morabito made his major league debut in a brief stint with the Mets earlier this season. He went without a hit in 12 plate appearances over the course of the five games in which he appeared. In Syracuse, though, he's hit .254/.355/.388 with 13 home runs and 42 stolen bases in 46 attempts. That line is good for just a 96 wRC+ given the context of the International League.
Ross has yet to make his major league debut. Drafted by the Mets in the 13th round in 2022, he made his professional debut with one appearance in Single-A in 2024 before throwing 54.0 innings with a 2.17 ERA and a 3.32 across High-A, Double-A, and Triple-A stints in 2025. This year, he's thrown all but a few of his innings in Syracuse, and he has a 6.94 ERA and a 5.90 FIP in his time at that level. His walk rate—7.68 per nine or 16.8 percent—has been a significant problem, and he's given up quite a few home runs.

After hitting three home runs in a single game for Triple-A Syracuse on Sunday, the Mets decided Mark Vientos was ready to return from his rehab ******* ignment for their series opener against the Tampa Bay Rays on Monday.
Not only that, but interim manager Andy Green decided to ride the hot hand and slotted the slugger right into the lineup, batting cleanup as the designated hitter in his first game back. Good thing he did, too, because Vientos stayed hot and rewarded his manager with a solo home run that was the difference in New York's 3-2 win.
"It felt great," Vientos said about not only the home run, but being back with the team after a long time away. "Felt great to come back and contribute in some way and a home run is always cool so it felt great for sure."
The home run, a 418-foot blast to center field, was Vientos' 12th of the season and even though he's had a disappointing season this year, Vientos reminded everybody of the raw power he possesses.
In fact, despite playing in just 74 games, Vientos is seventh on the team in home runs and just two away from being tied for third. If he keeps up his pace over the last few days, he'll be near the leaderboard in no time.

On September 1st, major league rosters expand to 28-players, and tomorrow the Mets are reportedly calling up right-handed pitcher Justin Hagenman and right-handed outfielder Nick Morabito.

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Marcus Stokes threw for 223 yards and two touchdowns as Memphis rattled off the final 13 points to beat UNLV 27-21 on Saturday night in a season opener for both teams.
The win helped Charles Huff become the first Tigers head coach to win a road debut game.
Stokes completed 15 of 26 passes with no turnovers, while Jaylin Carter rushed for 97 yards and a touchdown on 15 carries.

Aug. 29—In a high-scoring preseason affair, host Green Bay got four touchdown passes from Kyle McCord, including two in the final four minutes, to nip Arizona 42-38 at Lambeau Field on Friday night and finish 2-1 in the preseason.
McCord, a second-year player out of Syracuse who spent last season on the Philadelphia Eagles' practice squad, completed 22 of 35 passes for 226 yards and no interceptions. He was the only Packers quarterback to see action in a game contested by mostly reserves.
McCord connected with Kisean Johnson on a 28-yard scoring play with 3:19 left before directing a 44-yard scoring drive in the closing seconds. He and Johnson connected again from 10 yards out with 20 seconds left.

The Mets have made a roster move for a fresh arm ahead of Friday's series opener against the Astros.

Nasir Anderson, one of the top guard prospects in the class of 2027, recently cut his list to just 10 programs, with Indiana being among them. Anderson will chose from the Hoosiers or a group consisting of Kentucky, North Carolina, UConn, Florida, Tennessee, Georgia, Providence, Syracuse and Virginia.
That's still a pretty wide and stacked group of programs, so Indiana still has plenty of work to do in this recruitment, but it's good to be in the game regardless.

Vientos' first hit came in the first, smashing a single to score Emilien Pitre from second and give Syracuse an early 1-0 lead. His longball came in the fifth with the bases empty. He smashed a changeup in the middle of the plate 409 feet to give Syracuse a 6-1 lead at the time.
It was a great offensive day for Vientos, who started at DH, and he needed it. He was hitless over his first three minor league games in his current rehab ******* ignment and Mets interim manager Andy Green had some pointed things to say about the slugger and his future role on the team.
"I was very forthright with him when he started the rehab ******* ignment that a lot of that will be dictated by how others perform and also by how he performs," Green said Wednesday. "Still think there's a very bright future for him out there if he wants to grab a hold of it. That's on him."

A Nebraska feshman met with the media on Tuesday. Running back Jamal Rule spoke about his transition to college football.
The Salisbury, North Carolina, native had a fantastic senior year at Charlotte Christian. The back ran for 1,362 yards, averaging 7.9 yards per carry, and 16 touchdowns.
Rule chose Nebraska over Virginia Tech, Syracuse, and Michigan State. He was a three-star prospect and was ranked as one of the nation's top 50 running backs.
Rule showed he has the ability to be the team's No. 1 running back at the start of the season. In Nebraska's spring game, he had ten carries for 121 yards, including a 75-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter.
Rule may only be a freshman but he'll have plenty of chances early in his career to establish himself as Nebraska's primary running back. He discussed the technical aspects of the position and the importance of those skills to continue his development.

The WooSox didn't get much offense in Syracuse (Mets AAA) and, as a result, got walked off with two outs. But it shouldn't have even gotten to that point since they were getting outhit 11-3, so there's some people on the squad we need to tip our caps to. Blake Wehunt didnt' quite make it five innings but kept all but one run off the board despite allowing seven total baserunners. Allen Castro drove a late run in to make this a tie game in the 9th, and Franklin Arias and Romy Gonzalez hit doubles; Arias' scored a pair of runs.
Don't look now, but Arias already has 22 RBIs since his call up to Triple-A a month ago, and his total in 2026 sits at 74. That's a good season by any account, but keep in mind that Arias batted first for a lot of his time in Double-A so that total might be even higher if he wasn't hitting so many solo shots to start the game. That he's consistently been the youngest at his level and hasn't gone more than three days before finding a groove are very, very good signs going forward (as in, after the lockout, in this writer's humble opinion.) Still, Arias is slashing .291/.357/.488(!) in a sample size that is growing bigger and bigger against guys who are getting better and better. And maybe, just maybe, it was all part of Breslow's plan to waltz straight from the Trevor Story (0-4, 2 K's on Friday) contract into Franklin Arias mowing down big league pitching. (And it was just how he drew it up, even down to Andruw Monasterio playing so well this year, right?)

Devin Futrell also had a good night on the mound and shoved through six innings even after allowing a first-run home run, displaying a line that could have been plenty enough to take a decision win with a bit more pop at the plate: 6.0 IP, 6 H, 2 ER, 1 BB, 4 K.
But the real story of the night – aside from Anthony getting closer to beign back with the big league club just in time to be one of the team's "September call-ups" – has got to be how good Justin Gonzales has looked in general this year, but especially since his promotion to Double-A. He hit a triple and his OPS stands at over 1. These are numbers that folks made a big deal out of when Arias started the season hot this year, and there's reason to believe that it's time to pay attention to the outfielder, who won't turn 20 until New Years Eve.
I will not jinx the Drive into saying they might be able to sleepwalk into a win Saturday following a rain delay in which they had a lead. The last time I did that, they sweated out a 7-run performance in the remaining innings and gutted a win out by the skin of their teeth. What I will say is that it's looking good in the third against Winston-Salem (White Sox High-A.) "First" pitch of the double-header is today at 4:30.

There's little debate about who the greatest college football coach of all time is. It's none other than former Michigan State, LSU, and Alabama head coach Nick Saban, but as is often the case, failure to launch came before the rise to glory.
Not many know that Saban was once an ***** istant under former Ohio State head coach, the late, great Earle Bruce, from 1980-81. Saban started his coaching career as a graduate ***** istant for his alma mater, Kent State, in 1973 and was promoted to the linebackers coach in 1975. He also had stops as an ***** istant at Syracuse and West Virginia before Bruce hired him as a defensive backs coach in 1980. Amazingly enough, Saban was hired to replace another famous coach, Pete Carroll, on the Buckeye staff.

Not many know that Saban was once an ***** istant under former Ohio State head coach, the late, great Earle Bruce, from 1980-81. Saban started his coaching career as a graduate ***** istant for his alma mater, Kent State, in 1973 and was promoted to the linebackers coach in 1975. He also had stops as an ***** istant at Syracuse and West Virginia before Bruce hired him as a defensive backs coach in 1980. Amazingly enough, Saban was hired to replace another famous coach, Pete Carroll, on the Buckeye staff.

Significant changes are coming to Dooley Field at Sanford Stadium. The Georgia Bulldogs are one of 13 college football programs to agree to a sponsorship deal with Progressive Insurance.
Progressive will advertise its logo on Dooley Field. Last season, Delta advertised on Dooley Field.
Along with Georgia, Progressive agreed to deals with Oregon, Texas Tech, USC, Ole Miss, Colorado, SMU, Iowa, Kansas State, Boise State, Purdue, Syracuse and Wake Forest. It is unclear exactly how much Georgia is receiving in the sponsorship deal, but the Bulldogs are among some of the biggest players in the Name, Image and Likeness landscape.
According to the University of Georgia, the deal "will include sideboard features, in-venue LED signage, digital and social media integrations and other game day experiences designed to engage fans" this season.
"As we look for additional revenue streams while maintaining our strong positioning on a national level, this relationship ****** ists in providing the necessary resources for our student-athletes," Georgia athletics director Josh Brooks said on the deal. The time is quickly approaching when the Dallas Cowboys will have to make some tough decisions in order to get under the league mandated 53-man roster limit. Many players have the ease of mind that their roster spot is secured, leaving those currently sitting on the bubble fighting for one of the few spots still open. It's a few of those players we wanted to shine the light on today.
After hauling in three INTs in the scrimmage with the Los Angeles Rams and a another strong showing against the Seattle Seahawks in the first preseason game, Justin Barron has suddenly gone from a roster longshot to someone who will be difficult to cut. He seems to have grown leaps and bounds from last year to this after joining the Cowboys as an undrafted free agent out of Syracuse, pushing Shemar James and Curtis Robinson for one of the final LB roster spots.
Can the Cowboys afford to carry five safeties on the active roster? Probably not, but Julius Wood is certainly making his case they should. He's been impressive throughout training camp and it's carried over so far into preseason. He's known more as a downhill number from the safety position, but has played deep, in the box, and slot for Christian Parker. That versatility and position flex is worth keeping around. He was cut last year, can he avoid that fate a second time?
Tommy Dunn, an undrafted free agent out of Kentucky this year, is starting make some waves along the Cowboys defensive front recently.
