Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer pushed back Sunday on comments made by former first lady Michelle Obama last year that U.S. voters aren't ready to elect a female president.
"Listen, I have got a lot of colleagues who I think are probably interested in running for president, and I've heard everyone say, 'You can't have this person or that person,'" the governor told NBC News' "Meet the Press."
"I would put my money on any Democratic governor in the country against [Vice President] JD Vance or [Secretary of State] Marco Rubio in 2028," she added, pointing to two Republicans widely expected to run for president in two years.
Asked directly whether a woman could be the best choice to beat a potential GOP presidential nominee in 2028, Whitmer simply said, "I do."
In 2025, Obama said in public remarks: "As we saw in this past election, sadly, we ain't ready. That's why I'm like, don't even look at me about running, because you all are lying. You're not ready for a woman. You are not."

However, his opponent Senator Flavio Bolsonaro, the eldest son of former President Jair Bolsonaro, refused to accept defeat and said he would ask for the result to be annulled due to a Sunday ruling from a Supreme Court justice that extended voting for two hours.
Bolsonaro led the election's first round but lost in the runoff by over 4 million votes, rattling Brazilian financial markets which had bet on his victory. In a rare Sunday hearing, a federal appeals court judge appointed by President Trump questioned how the Trump administration's request to intervene in California's ongoing midterm election in order to force state officials to set aside 20,000 ballots from voters whose citizenship it questions squares with the U.S. Constitution.
Judge Mark J. Bennett said that while the executive branch is "unhappy" with what California law requires for ensuring voters are citizens, the state has the right to determine the manner of its elections under the Elections Clause of the Constitution and Congress has not challenged that process, despite having the ability to do so.
"It seems to me that you want us to issue an injunction that is entirely inconsistent with the law the California Legislature has adopted pursuant to the Elections Clause," Bennett said. "How can we do that?"
Matthew Donnelly, a Justice Department attorney, said the Trump administration has good reason to believe those ballots are from ineligible noncitizen voters, and has the legal right under separate federal criminal law to challenge their tabulation until state officials can prove otherwise.
Donnelly said both federal criminal law and state election law bar noncitizen voters from casting ballots, but "the problem is that California isn't interested in enforcing that provision."

The Banana Ball Championship League will bring its 2027 World Tour to five New York locations, including Yankee Stadium in the Bronx, where the Savannah Bananas will play two games.
The organization announced the schedule for its 2027 tour on Thursday, Oct. 15, during the Banana Ball City Selection Show. The tour will span 23 Major League Baseball stadiums, 10 football stadiums and 33 minor league baseball stadiums.
Although the Savannah Bananas will make just one stop in New York, other teams in the league will play in Cooperstown, Buffalo, Rochester and Brooklyn.
"Rochester has been clamoring for the opportunity to see the outstanding Banana Ball performers, and we have worked for some time to bring them to ESL Ballpark," Rochester Red Wings President, CEO and COO Naomi Silver said. Chris Boswell has officially etched his name in the Pittsburgh Steelers' history books during the team's Week 6 win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Trailing the Buccaneers 13-0, the Steelers called on Boswell to kick a 52-yard field goal, which he made with ease. This successful field goal was the 309th of his career and would tie legendary Steelers kicker Gary Anderson's record for the most field goals made in team history. Oh, but Boswell wasn't finished there, as he successfully connected on a 39-yard attempt to secure his 310th field goal, surpassing Anderson and setting a new record in Pittsburgh that should only grow this season. Boswell also hit on two more field goals to close out the game, pushing the record to 312.

Andoni Iraola has admitted Liverpool will be without Dominik Szoboszlai and Jeremie Frimpong "for some time" after both were forced off with hamstring injuries in Saturday's 2-1 win at Brentford.
Vice-captain Szoboszlai, who had missed Liverpool's previous two matches with the same problem, was replaced after 32 minutes at the Gtech Community Stadium. Frimpong came on at half-time but lasted just six minutes before limping off.

Republican efforts to reduce national gas prices in the weeks before Election Day were derailed in the Senate by infighting among GOP lawmakers and members of the administration who could not agree on how to ease consumers’ pain at the pump.
The divisions within the Senate Republican conference over how to lower gas and diesel prices — even if temporarily — were driven primarily by geographic differences.
Senators from oil-refining states shot down proposals from farm-state senators to ban the export of diesel or to loosen restrictions on the sale of E15 gasoline with higher ethanol content.
“You’re talking about regional politics, and it gets bogged down in the politics of energy, and the fiefdoms around it,” said Ron Bonjean, a GOP strategist and former Senate leadership aide.
There were divisions that went beyond geography, too.

Debra Messing is facing intense backlash over her decision to support Republican Bruce Blakeman in New York's gubernatorial race.
Messing, who has previously supported Democratic candidates including Joe Biden and Hillary Clinton, shared an Instagram statement Tuesday evening laying out her reasons for endorsing the Donald Trump-backed candidate.
"For years, my focus has been protecting choice and voting rights, passing the ERA, protecting the rights of the gay community, and keeping out children's schools safe from gun violence. I still stand by every one of those principles. That hasn't changed," Messing wrote. "What has changed is how I feel about the city and state I love dearly."
The Will & Grace star said that after voting for Governor Kathy Hochul four years ago, she had reflected on that decision ahead of the November election. "So I asked myself the question I'd encourage everyone to ask. Not: 'Which party am I supposed to vote for?' But: 'Who do I believe will actually make life better for the people I love and the place I live?'"
For Messing, that person is Blakeman. "I don't agree with him on everything, and I don't expect to," she wrote. "No candidate is perfect. But on the issues that are hurting New Yorkers right now, I believe he's the right choice. Yes, he's been endorsed by the President. That's not what my vote is about."

The lawmakers, writing to the FEC as well as the Justice and Homeland Security departments, urged the agencies to coordinate on "AI-driven threats to election integrity" and to press AI companies on their safeguards. Their concerns come as a quarter of likely voters use AI tools daily and at least 38% have gotten information about candidates or voting from AI search summaries, according to a September survey released by the American ****** ociation of Political Consultants Foundation.
But later that month, FEC Commissioner Shana Broussard, a Democrat, wrote back with a blunt answer: the agency couldn't help. With only two of its six commissioner seats filled, the FEC "cannot proceed," she wrote, according to documents obtained through the Freedom of Information Act.

The officials unanimously agreed that inflation was still elevated and had not made much progress toward their 2% target in recent months, the minutes said. The Fed increased its key interest rate at the Sept. 15-16 meeting by a quarter-point to about 3.9%, its first increase in three years.
The increase defied President Donald Trump's repeated calls for the Fed to cut rates and prompted the president to criticize the Fed's rate-setting committee, though he still expressed support for Chairman Kevin Warsh, whom he appointed earlier this year. The rate increase comes as Americans are already struggling with high costs for groceries, gas and housing, and as affordability has taken on a leading role in the upcoming midterm elections, just seven weeks away.
Longer-term interest rates for mortgages and other borrowing have also jumped in the past few months for a range of reasons, including rising government debt, heavy borrowing by tech firms to finance data center construction, climbing oil and gas prices, and signs that growth and inflation remain elevated. The average 30-year fixed-rate mortgage surged 19 basis points to 7.49% in the week ended October 2, the Mortgage Bankers **** ociation said on Wednesday. It was last higher in November 2023.
Mortgage rates are tied closely to the yield on US 10-year Treasury notes, which earlier this week hit a 24-year high, driven by worries over inflationary pressures from soaring oil prices and data showing stronger US economic growth.
The cost of living is the top issue on Americans' minds as they decide how they will vote on November 3, a Reuters/Ipsos poll completed on Monday showed, and is one reason why Trump's approval rating is at a record low of 32%.
