NEW YORK — On the 25th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, the matchup between the Mets and Yankees will take Major League Baseball's center stage.
Expect some powerful moments pregame between New York's two baseball teams square off at 7:10 p.m. on Friday night at Yankee Stadium.
The meaning of Friday's game will go beyond the standings, at least for the Mets. They enter the game at 68-78 and winners of four straight games and looking to play spoiler for their crosstown rivals' division ****** le hopes.
The Yankees enter the Subway Series playing solid baseball, as well. The Yankees (84-62) are coming off a three-game sweep of the Rockies to move within three games of the Rays in the race for the AL East.
The Mets are coming off a three-game sweep of the Marlins after securing the series finale against the Giants last weekend.

The No. 2 Georgia Bulldogs are debuting all-white uniforms against the Western Ketnucky Hilltoppers. Georgia will wear white pants, white jerseys and white helmets for the first time in school history.
Georgia has worn alternate uniforms four times during the coach Kirby Smart era. The Dawgs are 4-0. Georgia still traditionally wears a white or red jersey along with silver britches and a red helmet.
The Bulldogs wore black jerseys in a 2016 home win (35-21) over Louisiana Lafayette. In Georgia's last road trip to Arkansas, back in 2020 quarterback Stetson Bennett saved the day after a slow start. Georgia wore red pants and slightly altered white uniforms in the 37-10 win.
In 2020, Georgia also wore black jerseys at home in the Bulldogs' 31-24 win over the Mississippi State Bulldogs in a game where JT Daniels passed for over 400 yards. Georgia wore the same black jerseys, which have a red Dawg collar, in Georgia's last-second 24-21 Peach Bowl win over Cincinnati.
Of course, Georgia's most memorable alternate jersey game is when the Bulldogs beat Auburn at home in 2007 with black jerseys. Georgia will look to move to 5-0 in alternate uniforms under coach Smart on Saturday, Sept. 12 against Western Kentucky at 12:45 p.m. ET.

Weisenburger replaces fellow righty Chris Devenski, who was designated for ******* ignment by the Mets.
Devenski, 35, is an 11-year veteran reliever who has pitched for seven clubs. He made just six appearances with the Mets, allowing eight earned runs on nine hits in 5.1 innings.

The Mets are making a change in their bullpen ahead of their series in the Bronx, recalling Jack Weisenburger and sending Chris Devenski back to Triple-A Syracuse.
Weisenburger appeared in three games for the Mets in August, tossing four and a third innings, allowing one run on three hits, walking two and striking out four. In 18 games for Syracuse (13 starts), Weisenburger has a 6.68 ERA over 62 innings pitched, with 53 strikeouts to 34 walks and eight home runs allowed.
Devenski split time between the Mets and Pirates organizations this season, and in six appearances for the Mets was more or less fine until his last appearance against the Marlins, where he was responsible for five of the runs in the Mets' wild 15-14 dub on Wednesday. The 35 year old veteran has a 13.50 ERA for the Mets this season, and an 11.74 ERA across both clubs in the majors.
With a little more than a week left in the Triple-A season and Syracuse two and a half games out of a playoff spot, Devenski will have plenty of opportunity for some innings before, potentially, rejoining the Mets if the need arises.
The second half of the Subway Series with the Yankees starts tonight at 7:05pm on PIX11 with Nolan McLean facing off against Carlos Rodón.

Howie Rose drove to Shea Stadium on Sept. 21, 2001, uncertain about whether Major League Baseball returning to New York City after 9/11 was the right decision. He drove home from the game knowing it was the only decision.
Rose recently joined the Awful Announcing Podcast to discuss his looming retirement from the Mets radio booth and some of the biggest moments from his broadcasting career. And while Rose made a habit of coming up big in the biggest moments, one of the calls he will always be ***** ociated with was Mike Piazza's home run in that first game back at Shea Stadium after 9/11.
On the 25th anniversary of 9/11, Rose reflected on baseball returning to New York and calling Piazza's home run that allowed New Yorkers to smile again.
"I did not think it was the right decision until Mike hit that baseball," Rose admitted. "If they would have decreed on the evening of September 11th or the morning of September 12th that 'this is a nation in shock, in mourning, that needs to recover, it's late in the season, and we don't think coming back to play is the right thing to do,' I'd have been fine with that. My head wasn't into it at all. I drove to the ballpark that night of September 21st, concerned, worried.
"It was the first time any of us would be in a gathering that size… and we were still looking over our shoulders. In some ways, we still are today. So, I wasn't sure it was the right call," Rose continued. "And then Mike hit the homer. And I saw the reaction. That's when it dawned on me…it wasn't just the right decision, it was the only decision."

Boston College will host Rutgers for their annual Red Bandana game on Friday night in Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts. In a tradition that honors Welles Crowther, a Boston College graduate and volunteer firefighter who died saving lives in the South Tower on 9/11.
When the Eagles played the UCF Knights on the 10th anniversary of 9/11, fans wore red bandana stickers on their helmets. Three years later Boston College created the "red bandana game." Tonight they will wear special red bandana-themed uniforms and helmets for the 13th consecutive year.

MORRAL — Forget beating a rival in a Northwest Central Conference match. Elgin was just happy to be back on the volleyball court.
The Comets hadn't played a match in 12 days and just once in the last 18. Still, Elgin showed very little rust Thursday, Sept. 10, at Ridgedale, winning in three sets 25-19, 25-13, 25-21.
"They were ready to just get back on the court and not against each other," Elgin coach Caitlin Gracely said.
It was a scheduling quirk and not by design, she said, as a couple matches had to be moved to later in the season. Thus, they had a long layoff just days after the start of the 2026 season.
"I'm thankful for the break being in the beginning and not in the middle (of the season). That's the only thing I can be thankful for. I did not like that," Gracely said. "You can't give them a bunch of days off. You give them all the time off and they just mentally check out. We do not want that."

It really just feels like each series the Atlanta Braves have been in lately has been like them leaving a snake pit for a lion's den only to realize that they've stepped into a piranha's pond and escaped that just to find out that the dry land was quicksand. "I don't know how much more battle-tested we need to be," quipped Walt Weiss when he was asked by the media during Tuesday's pregame press conference about the tough schedule that the Braves have been dealing with as of late — and still have to navigate going forward.
Indeed, one of the takeaways from this patch is that the Braves will have faced some of the toughest teams that baseball currently has to offer once they eventually reach the Postseason and they should be more-than-ready to handle whatever's in front of them. With that being said, the Braves had to deal with another serious test in the form of the Tampa Bay Rays and once the smoke cleared, it was less about acing the test and more like simply doing enough to pass the test. Did Atlanta manage that? Let's get into it.
This one was competitive for two innings, as the Braves matched Junior Caminero's two-out dinger off of AJ Smith-Shawver in the first inning with a run of their own in the bottom half of that frame. The deadlock didn't last long at all, as the Rays made the third inning a long one for Smith-Shawver. AJSS was one out away from potentially putting two outs on the board against the Rays in that inning. Instead, Liam Hicks sent one flying into the Georgia night sky for a two-run shot. Smith-Shawver was one out away from keeping it at 3-1 before Victor Mesa Jr. hit a bouncer that eluded the glove of Ozzie Albies and dribbled into the infield for an RBI single that made it 4-1.
AJ Smith-Shawver was only able to make it through 3.1 innings with those four runs allowed, but credit is due to Brent Suter for going 3.2 innings while only giving up a single run while he was out there. Elieser Hernández wasn't as fortunate, as he surrendered two runs across his two innings of work and then got the DFA treatment once the next morning rolled around. It really felt like the Rays were either ****** ing and dunking or hitting moonshots, there was no in-between in this one.
Meanwhile, a nasty trend for the Braves was emerging while they were on the mound. It's not particularly shocking that Freddy Peralta ended up going six innings with just one run allowed since he'd done pretty well in two previous starts against Atlanta with the Mets. It wasn't shocking either to see the Rays bullpen clamp down on the Braves they did on Tuesday, either. What was shocking is that the Braves came out of this game with 11 batted ****** that were at least 95-mph that ended up turning into outs. Folks, that's tough!

A fight near the end of third quarter in Saturday night's high school football game between Mililani (HI) and Foothill (NV) resulted in the game being called early.
The game was called with 3:51 remaining in the third quarter on Sept. 5.
Mililani, the No. 13 team in the USA TODAY Sports Super 15 West rankings entering the week, had just scored a touchdown on an 8-yard run by Makakoa West. The visiting team attempted the point after attempt and as the kick went through the uprights, punches were thrown.
The scrum started as a minor skirmish near the line between a few players and quickly boiled over to multiple players throwing punches, being shoved and helmets taken off.
The fight was mainly limited to the field with a handful of Mililani players rushing onto the field as nearly every Foothill player remained on their sideline. Coaches from both sides rushed onto the field to quickly break the fight up.

Just when you thought the Mets were going to go quietly, an eighth-inning power surge changed the narrative Sunday in New York.
Brett Baty and Bo Bichette both homered in an epic eighth-inning rally to secure a 4-2 victory over the Giants, as the Mets stole a win and the series.
Stymied by Giants rookie pitcher Cesar Perdomo, the Mets finally broke through against the Giants bullpen thanks to Baty's and Bichette's heroics. Trailing 2-0, Baty pinch-hit for Nick Morabito and injected life into a sleepy game with a solo shot to get the Mets on the board. AJ Ewing singled before the Giants intentionally walked Juan Soto to get to Bichette. Perhaps the former All-Star took that personally, because Bichette crushed a three-run homer to take the lead and eventually the game.
Kodai Senga quickly retired the Giants in order in the ninth inning to earn the save and close out a good day for the Mets pitching staff, including a solid start from Christian Scott.
Up until the explosive eighth inning, the story was Perdomo, who made it look easy in his first career start. The Mets scored 15 runs in the first two games of the series with the Giants, but couldn't get traction against the young pitcher.

Aaron Judge continues to stay busy for the Yankees as he works his way back from a fractured rib that has had him on the IL since June 2.
Prior to their series finale against the San Diego Padres on Sunday, manager Aaron Boone told the media that the plan is still for Judge to face live pitching on Monday at Yankee Stadium, although the pitchers have yet to be determined.
Judge checked off another box earlier in the week by taking batting practice swings with the rest of the team while on their West Coast road trip and is nearing his long-awaited return.
New York comes back to the Bronx following Sunday's game and has an off day on Monday before beginning a six-game homestand against the Colorado Rockies and Mets starting on Tuesday night.
Asked whether Judge returning to the team on Tuesday is unrealistic, Boone answered, "I don't know. We'll see."

The Mets are promoting pitching prospect Gary Gill Hill from Double-A Binghamton to Triple-A Syracuse, the team announced on Sunday.
Gill Hill joined the Mets organization as part of the trade that sent Freddy Peralta to the Tampa Bay Rays at this year's trade deadline and had pitched well with the Rumble Ponies. In five starts, the right-hander went 2-0 with a 3.76 ERA (1.22 WHIP) and struck out 28 batters over 26.1 innings.
Overall, the 21-year-old has a 4.34 ERA in 25 starts between High-A, where he began the season, and Double-A.
New York's No. 19 overall prospect, according to SNY, Gill Hill's last start in Binghamton came on Sept. 1, which puts him on schedule to make his debut for Syracuse soon.
The promotion comes after the Mets recalled Jonah Tong from Triple-A to the big leagues, leaving a spot open in the starting rotation.

NEW YORK (AP) — Jonah Tong will return to the big leagues on Monday and the New York Mets intend to keep the right-hander in their rotation for the final weeks of the season.
Tong will start in Miami against the Marlins, and the 23-year-old could be in line to pitch in next weekend's Subway Series at Yankee Stadium as part of a young rotation that includes Nolan McLean, Christian Scott and Zac Thornton.
"I just can't wait for that," Tong said Sunday before the Mets concluded a three-game series with the San Francisco Giants.
Tong is rejoining the Mets as the club's No. 5 prospect, according to MLB Pipeline, after going 5-6 with a 4.54 ERA in 23 starts for Triple-A Syracuse and allowing two runs in his past 21 1/3 innings. He was 4-1 with a 3.00 ERA in his last 10 starts, combined on a no-hitter on July 30 and came within one out of finishing a seven-inning no-hitter on Aug. 29.
"He's had a good run here recently and we want to see him build on it," interim manager Andy Green said. "So I think we're excited to see it, and I think we'll continue to hand him the ball throughout the rest of this year. We're not going to make a secret of that."

NEW YORK — The Mets are hoping to preserve Christian Scott in the long term and additional rest might just help him down the stretch.
On Sunday afternoon, Scott will make his first start in nine days as he takes the mound for the Mets against the Giants at 1:40 p.m. at Citi Field.
The Mets are exercising caution with Scott, who missed all of last season on the heels of Tommy John surgery in September 2024. Scott has thrown 94⅔ innings across 20 starts for the Mets, notching a 4-4 record with a 3.80 ERA and 113 strikeouts. The right-hander also threw 13⅔ innings in the minor leagues and missed two weeks in June with a right hip impingement.
Sunday will be the first test to prove how additional rest can suit Scott.
The Giants with have left-handed rookie Cesar Perdomo on the mound for Sunday's game. Perdomo made his major league debut on Sept. 1 against the Pirates, allowing one earned run at three hits and one walk with four strikeouts in four innings. He was 7-2 with a 5.10 ERA in nine games for Triple-A Sacramento before being called up.

LOS ANGELES — The Dodgers swapped relievers in the bullpen on Saturday, activating Bobby Miller from the 60-day injured list with Kyle Hurt getting optioned to Triple-A Oklahoma City. The timing of the move helps provide a lesson in timing and roster planning with just over three weeks remaining in the regular season.
The immediate need is available arms to cover Sunday and Monday's games. Sunday was an open spot in the rotation already on the nine-game homestand, and Monday opened up after Eric Lauer was placed on the injured list after his start last Tuesday. Justin Wrobleski, who pitched two innings on Tuesday, will be available for bulk innings on Sunday against the Nationals. Miller will be potentially available Sunday as well up to around 50 pitches if needed if he doesn't pitch on Saturday, manager Dave Roberts said Saturday.
Miller began the season on the injured list with shoulder inflammation, and also dealt with a back injury this season. During his rehab ***** ignment for Triple-A Oklahoma City, Miller put up a 3.86 ERA in seven games, with 17 strikeouts and four walks in 14 innings. His last two outings were exactly one inning, but his first five games with the Comets were between two and three innings, and ranged from 44-50 pitches.
"I feel like my stuff has played up a little bit better [in relief], but being in attack mode just all the time is really a mindset out there," Miller said Saturday. "Try to get ahead of every single hitter, not get in a ton of 3-2 counts, just try to get the hitter out as best you can."
Whether Miller is even an upgrade over Hurt is at least debatable, as at least one Dodgers reliever was surprised to see Hurt in street clothes with a travel bag packed walking out of the clubhouse on Saturday. But Miller is more likely than Hurt to provide length, and the fresh arm express isn't always fair.

Zac Thornton entered today's game with a 2.93 ERA in 11 starts. It's been quite the surprising season for the rookie lefty, who has managed those impressive topline numbers despite boasting less than flashy stuff and underlying peripherals. Alas, those topline numbers look a little bit worse after today's game, as Thornton underwent his worst start as a major leaguer, and the Mets were not able to work themselves out of the hole he put them in, resulting in a 9-5 loss to the Giants.
San Francisco struck within minutes of the game's start, as Rafael Devers socked Thornton's fourth pitch of the afternoon over the right field wall for a one-out solo homer. The Mets answered back in the bottom of the second when A.J. Ewing—who has been struggling mightily in the second-half—socked a two-out, two-run homer off Giants starter Anthony Molina. That gave the Amazins a 2-1 lead, but unfortunately they would not hold it for long. Thornton surrendered a lead-off single in the third inning, followed by a two-run blast to Christian Koss to put the Giants back in front.
Thornton went on to retire his next eight batters, right up until Koss—who entered today's game with just one homer this season—came to the plate again in the top of the fifth, and he hit his second home run of the afternoon. Not to be outdone, Devers came up two batters later following a single and socked his second home run of the day. Thornton surrendered one hit—a double from Bryce Eldridge, the fourth straight two-out hit of the inning—before finally retiring the Giants, but it was now a 6-2 ballgame.
Meanwhile, the Mets's bats did little against Molina after Ewing's homer (that hit in fact remained the only one surrendered by the Giants through six innings). Both teams went to their bullpens in the sixth inning—albeit with Molina's final line looking a lot better than Thornton's ugly one (5 innings, 7 hits, 1 walk, 6 strikeouts, 6 runs). Chris Devenski was the first reliever up for the Mets, and he did his job by tossing two scoreless innings. The bats finally got something going in the bottom of the seventh, when two singles and a walk loaded the bases with one out. Francisco Alvarez struck out swinging for the second out, but the Mets then finally got another run on the board when Brett Baty walked to bring in a run and make it 6-3. Alas, the potential tying run was stranded, as Francisco Lindor grounded out to first to end the threat.
And the Giants quickly acted to make sure the Mets would not continue to claw their way back into the game. Jefry Yan took the mound in the top of the eighth and issued a one-out walk to Eldridge, followed by a two-run homer from Osleivis Basabe. That made it 8-3, but San Francisco still wasn't quite done. Justin Hagenman pitched the ninth, and just like every non-Devenski Mets pitcher of the day, he surrendered a homer—this one a one-out solo shot for Grant McCray. That made it six dingers for the Giants, in case you weren't keeping count.

Layla Murray, fiancée of Kansas City Chiefs punter Matt Araiza, became the topic of discussion on the internet as she responded to Daejon Love's allegations on behalf of a woman dating a player in the National Football League (NFL).
Murray began her debunking with facts from league documentation, including public rosters, injured reserve lists, and practice squads.
"Let's debunk some of the things Daejon Love claims to do or be as someone dating an actual NFL player. First off, he claims to be injured. All these years, he would be on the IR for the Forty Niners, and you would see his name online on the IR practice squad and the staff," Murray pointed out.
She continued with equipment, as players do not usually bring helmets from the field after practice.
"For all public information, my fiancé does not bring his helmet home from practice. The only time I've ever seen him with his helmet at home was in the off-season, and he did train with his helmet on, but with other players and just a punt or at a park alone," Murray explained.

The Chicago Cubs did a pretty good job of acquiring starting pitching help at the trade deadline.
Right-hander Kevin Gausman was acquired from the Toronto Blue Jays, and Clay Holmes from the New York Mets.
Before those moves, the Cubs added lefty David Peterson in a deal with the Mets.
This better positions Chicago's rotation before the postseason. However, those weren't the only three pitchers they targeted.

NEW YORK — The Mets opened September on a high note down in Florida earlier this week.
The club capped a series win over the American League-leading Rays with a 10-4 victory in the finale on Wednesday night. Mets rookie outfielder Nick Morabito starred off the bench with his first career hit landing for a three-run double before he added a diving catch in left field and his second hit in the ninth.
The Mets now open a three-game series against the Giants - one of five teams which have a worse record than the Mets - at 7:10 p.m. on Friday night at Citi Field.
Nolan McLean will be looking to continue his run of success from the mound for the Mets as he makes his 28th start of the season.
The Mets rookie right-hander has placed his name in contention for NL Rookie of the Year with nine quality starts in his last 10 appearances. McLean last held the Astros to one unearned run on two hits and three walks with four strikeouts across seven innings to improve to 10-8 and chisel his ERA down to 3.06.

When the New York Mets signed Juan Soto on the heels of a trip to the National League Championship Series, many fans thought they would be contending year in and year out.
However, they missed the postseason last year and entered play on Friday trailing by 10 1/2 games in the wild card race. Their chances of making the postseason are practically zero, but Soto still wants to finish out the season strong, holding on to hope of a miracle.
"Finish strong, that's what we got to do," Soto said on Thursday. "We're not finished yet, we're not done yet. Who knows what can happen. Finish strong and carry that into October or the next season."
October would be more than a miracle for the Mets at this point. They have played slightly better baseball as of late, posting a 16-13 record since the start of August. However, their turnaround has come too late.

The Rays win-loss record sits at 83-56 after Wednesday's loss to the Mets, with the team holding a 3.5-game lead over the Yankees in the AL East and maintaining the best record in the American League.
With 23 games left, the magic number for a postseason berth is 9, but that could hit zero as soon as this weekend, even though the division magic number sits higher, around 20, reflecting the still alive chances to claim the division from New York.
Regardless, the Rays have pathways to clinch as early as Sunday, according to ESPN's tracking, which noted, "The Brewers and Rays can clinch a postseason spot as early as Sept. 6."
If this sounds like a "well duh" for the best team in the American League, move along this post isn't for you — but I found it quite intriguing both that the magic number was so high but could also fall to zero so soon.

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — Throughout Jared Young's nine-year journey in pro ball, a winding path featuring a stop in Korea and more than 2,500 at-bats in the minor leagues, the belief that he would one day thrive in the big leagues never wavered.
To Young, it was only a matter of time. He's been waiting for an extended opportunity at this level and knew he'd be ready to take advantage whenever he got that chance.
"I always fully believed it," Young told NJ.com this week at Tropicana Field. "You just gotta keep believing in yourself and keep playing because there's a ton of good players that have opportunities and rightfully so, so when you get yours, you just gotta be ready for it."
With a runway of playing time this season in a Mets uniform, Young has capitalized in a big way. The 31-year-old is hitting .265 across 91 games with eight home runs, 16 doubles and 35 RBI. Other than Juan Soto, who is in his own category offensively, Young is tied with rookie phenom Carson Benge for the highest OPS among all active Mets (.758).
"This is where talent and character finally ran into opportunity," Mets interim manager Andy Green said recently. "Opportunity just never met him before, and it's finally there for him. We're getting to see who he is ... and he's been everything we could hope for."
