JOHANNESBURG (AP) — A mass shooting in South Africa this week was the latest in a trend of killings in some of the country's poorest areas that experts say is a symptom of organized crime gangs taking advantage of the failures and sometimes absence of police.
The shooting carried out by multiple suspects in an informal settlement of shacks in Johannesburg left 12 people dead and at least 15 wounded, according to authorities.
There have not been any arrests.
South Africa's president deployed the army to the streets in several hotspots earlier this year in an attempt to combat organized crime — an unusual move seen by critics as an admission that police in Africa's most developed country were losing the battle in those areas.
Alongside that, South Africa's police force has been embroiled in allegations of corruption and collusion with criminal syndicates. That has resulted in more than a dozen senior officers being arrested and top officials, including the police minister and the national police commissioner, being suspended.

Hurricanes' Jordan Staal writes Conn Smythe Trophy history originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The Carolina Hurricanes have now won the Stanley Cup for the second time in franchise history and for the first time since 2006 — eliminating the Vegas Golden Knights in six games on the evening of June 14.
Hurricanes' captain Jordan Staal was awarded the Conn Smythe Trophy for the most valuable player in the Stanley Cup Playoffs in the process. The Conn Smythe is determined via a vote by a panel of the Professional Hockey Writers **** ociation. Staal had 12 points in 18 playoff games and is the fourth straight forward to win the coveted accolade. He previously won the Stanley Cup in 2009 with the Pittsburgh Penguins, who traded him to Carolina in 2012 before ultimately writing history against the Golden Knights.
Though, what is extra significant about Staal winning the 2026 Conn Smythe is that the captain has now become the oldest player to be bestowed the award at age 37. In addition, Staal became the first player in NHL history to go 17 years from one Stanley Cup (the aforementioned one from 2009) to the next.
Staal also ranks second in Carolina franchise history with 972 games played.

The San Francisco 49ers added serious firepower to their offense during free agency by signing six-time Pro Bowl wide receiver Mike Evans to a three-year contract. As the team progresses through offseason workouts, one NFL **** yst thinks head coach Kyle Shanahan will utilize the 6-foot-5 boundary target at a particular area of the field: the red zone.
According to FantasyPros **** yst Andrew Erickson, Evans is stepping into a situation primed for high-volume touchdown production. Erickson thinks Evans can replicate what another star veteran did on a new team this past year—Los Angeles Rams receiver Davante Adams. He noted Adams' NFL-leading 14 touchdowns during his first season with the Rams as a reachable goal for Evans in San Francisco because of Jauan Jennings' departure and Brock Purdy's red zone scoring numbers.
During the 2025 season, 11 of Adams' 14 scores came from 10 yards or fewer away from the end zone. That hyper-localized production mirrors exactly how Evans has built a borderline Hall of Fame resume. Over his 12-year career, Evans has hauled in 108 total receiving touchdowns, with 51 of those scores generated from that same short-yardage area.
This interior scoring prowess pairs perfectly with Purdy’s efficiency. When healthy last season, Purdy finished second in the NFL by averaging 2.2 passing touchdowns per game.
Evans is already turning heads at practice and establishing a rapport with Purdy. He'll just need to keep doing what he's been doing to rebound off an injury-plagued 2025 season during his first year in the Bay.

The sooner Texas Tech stops attempting to defend itself, the better.
By now, you probably know that Red Raiders quarterback Brendan Sorsby has been ruled eligible to play after the first two games of 2026 by a Texas judge even though he placed thousands of sports bets as a college athlete and even bet on his own team when he was a redshirt freshman at Indiana.
It's a decision that has angered coaches and administrators at universities across the country. Schools are threatening to not play Texas Tech in any sports. Tech's compatriots in the Big 12 are upset too.
But instead of simply letting emotions subside and quietly weathering the hyperbolic fire, Tech has decided its strategy is to publicly dig deeper. And deeper. And deeper.
Thursday morning, just as the World Cup was getting started, the school inexplicably released a 20-plus-minute video including school president Lawrence Schovanec, athletic director Kirby Hocutt and coach Joey McGuire talking about Sorsby and the the ruling.

Most ***** yst rating changes move a single notch. So when one of the more closely followed semiconductor ***** ysts skips the middle rating and jumps two rungs at once, it's worth a closer look -- not necessarily as a reason to buy, but as a window into how the thinking around artificial intelligence (AI) spending may be changing.
That's what happened on June 11, when Bank of America's Vivek Arya double-upgraded Intel (NASDAQ: INTC) to buy from underperform, lifting his price target to $135 from $96. Banks tend to reserve a move like that for moments when the thesis they had been betting against breaks. And it came after Intel had already more than tripled in 2026 -- less a call on a forgotten stock than a bet that the turnaround has further to run.
Missed Nvidia in 2009? This Rare Signal Is Flashing Again. In 2009, a "Double Down" signal flashed for a little-known chipmaker called Nvidia. For the first time in years, that same "Total Conviction" signal is flashing for a company 1/100th the size of Nvidia. Continue »
Intel shares rose about 6% in the following session, closing near $125 as of this writing.
The more useful question isn't whether the target is right. It's what the upgrade says about the next phase of the AI trade.

The Diamondbacks will reinstate outfielder Lourdes Gurriel Jr. from the injured list on Monday, June 15. To make room, outfielder Ryan Waldschmidt will be optioned to Triple-A Reno.
Gurriel has been on the injured list since May 23 due to a strained left hamstring. He was hitting .228/.284/.304 with one home run in 92 at-bats at the time of the injury.
Waldschmidt, the club’s top prospect, was hitting .259/.314/.357 with no homers in 112 at-bats. His production has slipped in recent weeks; in his past 17 games, he is just 11 for 61 (.180) with a .493 OPS.
The Diamondbacks opted to keep another rookie outfielder, Tommy Troy, on the roster. Troy homered on Sunday against the Reds and is hitting .228/.323/.368 in 57 at-bats.
The club is also sticking with Jorge Barrosa, an excellent defensive outfielder who has struggled at the plate. Barrosa is out of minor league options and would have to be exposed to waivers.

Entering the College World Series, Ole Miss baseball had not lost a game in the NCAA Tournament.
As an unseeded team, the Rebels had gone 5-0 through the Lincoln Regional and Auburn Super Regional.
However, when the Rebels took the field against Troy at Charles Schwab Field in Omaha, Nebraska, on June 14, they found themselves in an unfamiliar position coming off a loss to North Carolina in their CWS opener.
For the first time in this year’s NCAA Tournament, Ole Miss was challenged with having to bounce back from defeat. With their season on the line, the Rebels failed to deliver, losing 12-8 to the Trojans.
It all started to go wrong for Ole Miss (41-23) in the fifth inning with the Rebels up 6-2.

England kick off their World Cup campaign against Croatia on Wednesday at the Dallas Stadium in Arlington, Texas.
Thomas Tuchel’s side arrive with high expectations, and the Group F opener immediately pits them against a familiar opponent. Croatia have caused England problems in the past, so the football focus is already intense.
But supporters heading to AT&T Stadium are also bracing for a different kind of shock. The cost of beer, water and food is already shaping up to be one of the first big off-pitch stories of England’s tournament.
According to the Mirror, a standard 16oz draft beer at the stadium will set fans back $18.50, which is about £13.84.
On the other hand, an American beer is listed at $15.95, or £11.93, while non-alcoholic beer costs $16.95, or £12.68.

The New York Knicks defeated the San Antonio Spurs four games to one last night, overcoming multiple double-digit deficits along the way. While much of New York City and New Jersey celebrate the Knicks’ extinguishing New York’s long ******* le drought across the Big Four sports leagues (stretching back to the Giants in 2011), Rutgers nation can take pride in seeing one of their own step up big time for the Spurs. Dylan Harper not only played extensive minutes, but he looked like the best Spur on the court for large parts of this series.
Despite coming off the bench the entire series, Harper averaged 18 points, 6.4 rebounds, and 3 ******* ists per game. As the series got better, so did the rookie out of Rutgers, with his crowning performance coming in an elimination Game 5 at home. Harper led the team with 25 points while also contributing 5 rebounds and 4 ******* ists while playing 31 minutes off the bench.
While much of the team struggled, including De’Aaron Fox throughout the series, Harper stepped up in clutch moments and time again. His crafty finishing around the rim caught the eyes of fans nationwide, while his tenacious defending made things difficult for New York throughout the series. He was the second-leading scorer behind Victor Wembanyama in the NBA Finals as a rookie while coming off the bench, which says just about everything you need to know about his career trajectory
If there is one area where the budding star guard could improve, it would be his three-point shooting. Harper got off to a slow start from deep this series, scoring 16 points in Game 1 on 1-4 from downtown. In Game 2, he missed all three attempts from deep while finishing with 15 points, before going 1-8 from long range during Game 3 at MSG. Coincidentally, that was the lone game the Spurs were able to win over the eventual champion Knicks.
Some of those threes were wide open as well, which made me think about just how good Harper could be if he had even a respectable three-point jump shot. In Game 4, Harper went 8-12 from the field and converted 3 of 6 threes, coming up with 21 points despite the Spurs blowing an unfathomable 29-point lead, the largest in Finals history. Due to the catastrophic loss, San Antonio went from a possible 2-2 tied series to trailing New York 3-1 as the series returned to Texas.

Ben Shelton won his third **** le of the year on Sunday, beating fellow American Taylor Fritz in a battle of the top two seeds at the BOSS Open final, 6-2, 2-6, 6-4.
Shelton went to three sets in each of his four matches over the week, losing the first set in the Round of 16, quarterfinal and semifinal. He held his nerve, though, and triumphed over World No. 88 Marcos Giron, No. 104 Sho Shimabukuro and No. 12 Jiri Lehecka. Fritz was the biggest test, ranked No. 9 and the biggest threat to Shelton's national No. 1 ranking.
In addition to being Shelton's third championship win of the season, it's his third win on as many surfaces, claiming victory in Munich on clay and in Dallas on the hard court.
Shelton's win gives him 250 points in the live rankings, which keeps him at No. 5 internationally. Alex de Minaur threatened to pass him by with a finals appearance in the Hertogenbosch 250, but he lost, giving Shelton a 50-point advantage.
Ahead of Shelton are Felix Auger-Aliassime (4,390), Alexander Zverev (7,190), Carlos Alcaraz (9,960) and Jannik Sinner (13,500). Passing Auger-Aliassime would give Shelton a new career-high ranking.

Finally, Bud Cauley is a winner on the PGA Tour.
Cauley held on late to claim the RBC Canadian Open on Sunday afternoon. He posted a 5-under 65 in a rainy final round at TPC Toronto, which gave him a two-shot win over the rest of the field.
The win was the first of Cauley's career, and it came in what was his 239th PGA Tour start. Before Sunday, Cauley had never finished better than third since he earned his Tour card back in 2012. Only four other guys on Tour have had more starts without a win.
The win also secured him a spot into the U.S. Open next week. Cauley, who entered the tournament at No. 68 in the Official World Golf Rankings, needed a fifth-place finish or better to earn a spot in the field at Shinnecock Hills.
Cauley entered the final round a shot back after his 66 on Saturday. Jackson Suber birdied the final hole on Moving Day to take the solo lead, but he quickly fell back on Sunday to open the door for the rest of the field.

$126 Million Red Sox Target Expected To Hit Open Market, Per Insider originally appeared on NESN. Add NESN as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
One of the Boston Red Sox's top offseason targets could become available again as soon as this offseason.
After the Red Sox failed to retain Alec Bregman this past offseason, the team quickly pivoted, targeting two-time All-Star free agent Bo Bichette. Bichette, 28, eventually signed a three-year, $126 million contract with the New York Mets. USA Today's Bob Nightengale shared that the star infielder is surprisingly expected to opt out of his contract this offseason, hitting the open market once again.
"Teams expect New York Mets third baseman Bo Bichette to opt out of the final two years of his Mets contract after the season, giving clubs like the Philadelphia Phillies a second shot at him," Nightengale wrote on Sunday.
"It could be a massive gamble for Bichette considering he’s still owed $79 million. He is earning $2 million this year after already being paid a $40 million signing bonus, and if he opts out, he will be paid an additional $5 million."

Michigan State football had been on a bit of a recent recruiting heater that culminated in adding 4-star offensive lineman Caleb Johnson on Saturday. Now, Sunday has come around, and the Spartans have suffered a couple of blows.
After watching wide receiver Isaiah Alvarez and cornerback Deontay Malone choose fellow Big Ten foes, the Spartans have now seen cornerback target Kayden Battle commit to Pitt.
Battle officially visited on May 29th, where the Spartans made an early impression, but in the end, it was the Panthers that closed the deal on his June 12th official visit.
Battle, a 5-foot-11 3-star from Powder Springs (GA), chose the Panthers over Michigan State, Stanford and Kansas State. He was the main priority for the Spartans after Malone chose Ohio State.
Now, the Spartans are back to the drawing board for the second and final cornerback spot that they plan to fill, needing to reevaluate who is still available.

Sabrina Ionescu was back for the New York Liberty Sunday after missing 12 of the team’s first 13 games with ankle and back injuries.
She didn’t start and didn’t to much on offense. But it was a welcome sight in New York as the Liberty secured a 86-64 Commissioners’ Cup win over the Washington Mystics despite her limited output.
Ionescu, a four-time All-Star and All-WNBA selection, missed the first five games of the season with a left ankle injury. She returned for a 91-76 loss to the Dallas Wings on May 24, then missed seven games with back soreness before her return to the court on Sunday.
Fortunately for the Liberty, they went 6-1 during that seven-game stint and improved to 10-4 on Sunday while picking up a Commissioner’s Cup win.
The Liberty previously cleared Ionescu to return against Washington, but she wasn’t in the starting lineup when the ball was tipped. Instead, she was eased back into the lineup off the bench and entered the game for the first time with 5:32 remaining in the first quarter. Ionescu was greeted with a loud ovation from the Barclays Center crowd.
