Aug 19 (Reuters) - Marvell Technology will help develop Google's in-demand custom chips and has offered the search giant the right to buy a potential $12.2 ‌billion stake, the latest deal in which Big Tech is investing in the suppliers ‌powering its AI build-out.
Shares of the chipmaker jumped nearly 8% as the deal marked a major vote of confidence from a top cloud-computing provider and could bring roughly $120 billion in revenue through fiscal 2033, if Google hits the targets its stake option depends on.
Larger rival Broadcom, which had been Google's main custom chip partner so far, fell more than 5%, while shares in Google-parent Alphabet were little ‌changed.
Demand for in-house chips such as Google's tensor processing units (TPUs) has surged as companies seek cheaper alternatives to Nvidia's pricey graphics processors and technologies better suited for inference, the process of running trained AI models.

Marvell stock is rebounding off a sharp Tuesday slide and extending an already outsized 155% year to date (YTD) advance through Tuesday's close.
Broadcom (NASDAQ:AVGO) shares are down 3% to $369.13 on the same headline. The move highlights the competitive stakes in Google's custom AI chip roadmap, where Broadcom has been the incumbent supplier for multiple generations of tensor processing units.

Good morning. Stocks got off to an unsteady start to trading as Treasury yields regained some of their losses from the day before, when Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent moved to support the bond market. That, plus rising oil prices, led the Dow (^DJI), S&P 500 (^GSPC), and Nasdaq Composite (^IXIC) to decline at the open.
Here's a check of the markets in the first few minutes of trading, based on a heat map powered by Yahoo Finance AlphaSpace data.
Consumer Discretionary stocks (XLY) were the hardest hit, while an 8% decline in Walmart (WMT) stock after earnings weighed on Consumer Staples (XLP). Walmart's slowing sales growth number also put pressure on other defensive names, such as Costco (COST).
Energy stocks (XLE) outperformed, meanwhile, as crude oil prices rose following President Trump's threat to wage "economic warfare" on Iran, raising concerns about a reescalation in the Middle East war.
Here are some notable stocks that Yahoo Finance readers are viewing this morning: **** eX (SPCX), Walmart, Sandisk (SNDK), Alibaba (BABA), SK Hynix (SKHY), Marvell (MRVL), and CrowdStrike (CRWD).

Marvell Technology (NASDAQ: MRVL) has emerged as a strong AI investment candidate throughout 2026. It has a great bull thesis and is right at the heart of the AI buildout.
Furthermore, Nvidia (NASDAQ: NVDA) has invested $2 billion into Marvell and announced several strategic partnerships to ensure that Nvidia's computing units function on Marvell's products. This is a big deal because Marvell is starting to grow its custom AI chip business, and this could be a major part of the company someday, especially with the two major clients that it has.
Missed Nvidia in 2009? This Rare Signal Is Flashing Again. In 2009, a "Double Down" signal flashed for a little-known chipmaker called Nvidia. For the first time in years, that same "Total Conviction" signal is flashing for a company 1/100th the size of Nvidia. Continue »
But is this enough to make Marvell the new Nvidia? Let's take a look.
Marvell makes connectivity devices for data centers and also ******* ists AI hyperscalers design custom chips. This is a great business to be in right now, as the AI buildout is full steam ahead. In its custom AI chip business, Marvel has captured two major clients: Amazon and Microsoft. These two companies operated the largest and second-largest cloud computing platforms in the world, and having these two as clients is a big deal for Marvell, as it gives them a major customer that wants to reduce reliance on Nvidia chips through designing their own.

NZS Capital, LLC, an investment management company, released its "NZS Growth Equity Strategy" second-quarter 2026 investor letter. A copy of the letter can be downloaded here. Equity markets delivered a strong performance in the second quarter of 2026, driven by demand for AI infrastructure, geopolitical stabilization, and positive earnings reports. The portfolio achieved a gross return of +24.96% and a net return of +24.76%, significantly outperforming the +14.79% return for the Morningstar Global Target Market Exposure Index. Overweight in Semiconductors, stock selection in areas like Software and Industrials, and zero exposure to Energy contributed to the Strategy's outperformance in the quarter. In addition, please check the Strategy's top five holdings to know its best picks in 2026.
In its Q2 2026 investor letter, NZS Growth Equity Strategy highlighted Marvell Technology, Inc. (NASDAQ:MRVL). Marvell Technology, Inc. (NASDAQ:MRVL) is a semiconductor company that delivers data infrastructure solutions across the data center core, cloud, enterprise, and network edge. On July 20, 2026, Marvell Technology, Inc. (NASDAQ:MRVL) closed at $194.94 per share, reflecting a market capitalization of $174.97 billion. Marvell Technology, Inc. (NASDAQ:MRVL) posted a one-month return of -30.14%, while its shares gained 170.79% over the past 52 weeks.
NZS Growth Equity Strategy stated the following regarding Marvell Technology, Inc. (NASDAQ:MRVL) in its Q2 2026 investor update:
"Those familiar with our strategy may know a key part of our process concerns reassessment of optional positions that outperform their way into the "middle" of the portfolio. If the team determines that the range of outcomes has narrowed enough for promotion to a resilient position, we add capital; otherwise, we trim the position back to optionality. While we might leave incremental upside on the table, we believe this strict reduction in overactive stocks with wide ranging outcomes allows us to continue benefiting from further upside without letting risk run. This quarter, the portfolio had five positions that worked their way into the middle – a few even ran all the way through the middle in a single day. This situation is unusual and perhaps symptomatic of the volatility in the market. In the cases of ARM Holdings, Marvell Technology, Inc. (NASDAQ:MRVL), Lattice Semiconductor, and Snowflake, we trimmed the positions back to optionality. For example, Marvell rallied significantly after Jensen Huang extolled the company as "the next trillion-dollar company" on stage at Computex in Taiwan. While we agree it's within the range of outcomes, in our view, Jensen's statement only resulted in the market applying a higher valuation to a stock whose fundamental range of outcomes remained unchanged; thus, we trimmed Marvell."

While the artificial intelligence (AI) frenzy may have cooled, the fire still burns bright. The investment theme is no longer about picking every AI-related stock. Instead, investors are now becoming more selective and are rewarding businesses that are turning surging demand into real revenue, profits, and long-term growth. With this shift in market sentiment, AI infrastructure winners like Marvell Technology (MRVL) and Broadcom (AVGO) continue to stand out.
Marvell Technology is a semiconductor company that designs the chips used in data centers, cloud computing, AI infrastructure, networking, storage, and telecommunications. As hyperscale customers continue to invest aggressively in AI infrastructure, Marvell Technology is entering a stronger growth cycle, which is why investors are pouring money into the stock. MRVL stock has surged an impressive 131% year-to-date (YTD), massively outpacing the broader market.

Stocks ended the week a long way from a bear market. But the "bear" word has started to crop up more in discussions among market ***** ysts. The Nasdaq ended below recent lows and leaning toward its next-nearest tests, the lows from June 26 and June 9. The S&P 500 finished ever-so-slightly below its 50-day moving average, equal to its last slip below the line from June 26.
On the downside, Sandisk (SNDK), Astera Labs (ALAB) and Marvell Technology (MRVL) booked the week's biggest losses on the Nasdaq 100, with an average drop of 25.3%. Paypal Holdings (PYPL), Cintas (CTAS) and Palo Alto Networks (PANW) held the upside, showing a 15.3% average gain. Results were similar on the S&P 500, but adding IBM (IBM) on the downside and Valero (VLO) among the week's winners.
The market is not providing a whole lot in the way of clues as to what comes next. Both the Nasdaq and the S&P 500 continue to trade below their early June highs. And rather than test those highs, wanting to break resistance and move higher, the indexes are instead testing lows and breaking technical support. Sellers are quietly overpowering buyers.
"Look, we are a trend-following methodology," says IBD Market Research Director Justin Nielsen. "And it's pretty easy when you're in a downtrend: we just kinda stay out. It's pretty easy when you're in an uptrend — that's where we like to push it, where we like to make money. This sideways action, this is where it's really tough."
That, for the time being, prescribes a course of caution: build watchlists, don't buy; rotate to cash where feasible and manage your capital with the understanding that it is unclear, for now, just where the stock market may be headed next.

As of roughly noon E.T., the S&P 500 (SNPINDEX:^GSPC) rose 0.56% to 7,524.39, the Nasdaq Composite (NASDAQINDEX:^IXIC) climbed 0.78% to 26,073.17, and the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJINDICES:^DJI) added 0.24% to 52,473.28 as AI chip strength helped markets stabilize after war‑driven volatility.
Chip and optical‑communication names, including Marvell Technology (NASDAQ:MRVL), Corning (NYSE:GLW), Coherent (NYSE:COHR), and Lumentum (NASDAQ:LITE), were among the day's notable gainers amid sector‑wide demand for communications chips. However, high-valuation AI behemoth Palantir (NASDAQ:PLTR) extended its 29% decline year-to-date, dropping about 4% so far today.
Despite the U.S.-Iran ceasefire being paused for now, and the market facing a growing drumbeat of **** ysts saying we might be in "bubbly" territory, stocks surged higher today, buoyed by the strength of AI and semiconductor stocks. In addition to a handful of **** yst upgrades of semiconductor stocks, SK Hynix's upcoming U.S. ADR offering is estimated to be more than seven times oversubscribed, indicating that immense investor appetite remains in the **** e.
Elsewhere, PepsiCo (NASDAQ:PEP) unofficially kicked off earnings season this morning, delivering mixed earnings that prompted shares to dip roughly 3%. The beverages and snacks giant grew sales by 6% in the second quarter, but said it saw weaker consumer spending in the U.S. due to higher gas prices and broader macroeconomic volatility.
Whether or not the AI and technology industries are indeed in "bubbly territory" as many **** ysts suggest, there are a surprising number of S&P 500 stocks near their 52-week lows, so plenty of opportunities remain despite the indexes trading at or near all-time highs.

Tower Semiconductor Ltd. (NASDAQ:TSEM) is one of the top stocks to buy according to Whale Rock Capital Management. On June 18, Tower Semiconductor Ltd. (NASDAQ:TSEM) announced that it has shipped more than five million coherent photonic integrated circuits (PICs) to global customers of its partner Marvell Technology.
These chips are used in coherent optical transceivers, which are specialized components that transmit data over fiber optic cables. According to Tower, these components are increasingly needed to link data centers as AI computing drives up demand for network bandwidth and speed. It added that coherent PICs are harder to build than simpler chip types because they must precisely control both the phase and polarization of light. Tower has been working with Marvell to push this technology forward, including combining silicon with other specialized materials, stacking electronic components in three dimensions, and using an advanced packaging method known as V-Grooves to improve how light is guided through the chip.
Dr. Ed Preisler, who leads Tower's RF Business Unit, said the company's photonics manufacturing platforms need to keep evolving alongside the requirements of coherent optical transceivers, and that Tower is proud of its partnership with Marvell in this area.
For Dr. Radha Nagarajan, Marvell's chief technology officer for optical engineering, the shipment is a milestone that proves the strength of the two companies' collaboration. Nagarajan added that Marvell intends to keep working with Tower to develop next-generation coherent technology suited to large-scale data center networks.
Tower Semiconductor Ltd. (NASDAQ:TSEM) is a specialized semiconductor foundry. It provides technology, development, and process platforms for integrated circuits, including SiPho, SiGe, CMOS image sensor, RF CMOS, mixed signal CMOS, non-imaging sensors, and integrated power management technologies.
