CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Goalkeeper Matt Freese admits he's not quite gotten over the United States' abrupt exit from the 2026 World Cup following a 4-1 loss to Belgium in the round of 16.
And quite frankly, he's not sure he ever will.
"Big losses in tough moments are things you never really get over because they stay with you for the rest of your career," Freese told The **** ociated Press ahead of the Major League Soccer All-Star Game coming up Wednesday in Charlotte. "They continue to motivate you for the rest of your career."
Freese made a costly mistake in the loss when he rushed well out of his box to clear a long ball, then hesitated under pressure to kick it away.
Belgium quickly converted the miscue into a goal to take a 3-1 lead in the 57th minute, all but sealing the Americans' fate.

After a stormy Tuesday kept the tarp on the field at Yankee Stadium, the Pirates (52-49) and the Yankees (56-44) will take the field today twice in the form of a day-night doubleheader. The Yankees sit atop the Wild Card standings and two games behind the Tampa Bay Rays in the AL East while the Pirates sit 11 games back of the Brewers in the NL Central and tied for the final Wild Card spot.
As a refresher, New York won the series opener Monday night, 8-5, thanks in large part to a pair of home runs and five runs batted in by Jazz Chisholm Jr.
Game 1 today pits two veteran right-handers Mitch Keller (6-7, 5.14 ERA) and Gerrit Cole (3-5, 3.93 ERA) against one another. Keller has been bad for about the last six weeks allowing 26 earned runs over just 35 innings. In his two July starts he has been even worse allowing eight runs in nine innings. In his last start Keller gave up three home runs. Well, the Yankees hit more home runs than anyone. Cole is beginning to look more like himself following his return from Tommy John surgery in late May. He was special against the Dodgers in his last start…until his last pitch. Max Muncy took him to the second deck in the seventh inning in a 2-1 Yankees loss. In July, Cole has thrown 17.1 innings and allowed seven earned runs, walking two and striking out 21.
The nightcap features a matchup of power arms at very different points of their seasons. Bubba Chandler (3-8, 4.77 ERA) remains one of Pittsburgh's most talented young pitchers, possessing high-end strikeout stuff, but command issues have led to inconsistency. He has struggled recently, posting a 6.60 ERA over his last three starts. Chandler was better in his most recent start, though, allowing two runs over 4.2 innings. Great? Hardly but better than his previous two starts in which he allowed a combined nine runs in 10.1 innings of work. For the Yankees, all eyes will be on Max Fried (4-3, 3.21 ERA), who is being activated from the injured list for the nightcap. The left-hander has been sidelined since May with a bone bruise in his elbow and was originally expected to make another rehab start before joining the rotation. Instead, the rainout accelerated his return. Expectations are he will throw a max of 60 pitches tonight.

Raynham's Brody ****** ila is officially a member of the Texas Rangers organization.
On Tuesday, July 21, the Rangers officially unveiled the 6-foot-9 southpaw, along with first round pick and fellow left handed pitcher Gio Rojas and second round pick and shortstop Connor Comeau, during an introductory press conference at the team's facility in Arlington, TX.
"We could not be more excited about the talent and the character of this group right here," Rangers President of Baseball Operations Chris Young said of the trio during the press conference. "We believe that they're going to be the next leaders within our organization (to) help us in our quest towards our next World Series championship."
The Rangers selected ****** ila, who was named both the 2025-26 MaxPreps Male National Athlete of the Year and 2025-26 Gatorade Massachusetts Baseball Player of the Year last month, 89th overall in the third round of the 2026 MLB Draft on July 11. According to MLB Pipeline's Jim Callis via X, the former Bishop Feehan ace and 2025-26 MIAA Division 1 basketball champion signed with the team for $2.75 million, nearly $2 million higher than the $900,800 expected for an 89th overall pick.
"I’ve been wanting to be a professional baseball player for my entire life," ****** ila said. "Hearing my name called, especially by an organization that does so well and in my position and circumstance right now knows that I’m probably going to recover the best here, it just means so much to me."

Chelsea goalkeeper Gabriel Slonina is training with Strasbourg as he attempts to secure a move to the French club.
The 22-year-old United States international, who has one senior cap, was Chelsea's third-choice goalkeeper last season and has been given the opportunity to work with the Ligue 1 side, which is also owned by BlueCo.
Any move would ultimately need to be approved by new Strasbourg manager Hugo Oliveira, and no final decision has been made.
Despite training under Xabi Alonso in his early sessions, Slonina is open to a move as he looks for regular first-team football, either on loan or on a permanent transfer.

It’s been a messy season in recent months due to the NCAA’s new “5 for 5” rules, which allow collegiate athletes to complete their journey at this level over 5 years.
With that rule comes a lot of changes: No more redshirting for a future star to sit and learn, and no more medical redshirts. It keeps everything pretty black-and-white from here on.
Well, even though it seems like there can’t be much confusion or anything wrong with that, we have seen numerous players who just completed their fourth year in college, suing the NCAA in an attempt to get an extra year of eligibility. When the new rules were passed, they were supposed to go into effect next year, meaning this last group of seniors who just finished their careers would be gone.
Kentucky Basketball fans are very familiar with one name in the group of players suing for an extra year of eligibility. Denzel Aberdeen, a former Kentucky guard from last year’s roster, entered the transfer portal and returned to Florida to seek an extra year and play a “super senior,” or fifth year, of college back where he played his first three seasons. Aberdeen would have an immediate impact on the Gators and would start right away for them, so Florida has their fingers crossed with that situation.
Kentucky fans do need to become familiar with another name that is in that group suing for a fifth year. A small forward transfer named Cade Tyson. It was reported by Dylan Blake on Tuesday afternoon that Kentucky would be pursuing Tyson, a potential fifth-year wing who would play real minutes for the program in the 2026-27 season.

A lack of unanimity among MotoGP manufacturers has dramatically altered the outlook for a proposal led by Aprilia to limit riders to a single bike during Friday and Saturday practice sessions.
Until a couple of grands prix ago, most manufacturers believed that, starting next season, teams would remove one of the two bikes from the front of the garage during practice before reverting to the usual two-bike set-up for both the sprint race and Sunday's grand prix.
However, Motorsport understands that divisions within the Motorcycle Sports Manufacturers **** ociation (MSMA) have forced a rethink on a proposal that had been all but approved. As things stand, the initiative has reached a dead end and now appears highly unlikely to be introduced.
The proposal, initially put forward by Aprilia and backed by Ducati, was presented as a cost-saving measure. Those opposed to the idea, however, believe the real motivation behind the two Italian manufacturers' push is their confidence that they already hold a technical advantage with the all-new 2027 prototypes.
In theory, restricting riders to a single bike during practice would slow development work and make it harder for rivals to close what they see as an existing performance gap.

Tubby Smith, who spent two seasons as Memphis basketball coach, was announced as a member of the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame's 2026 induction class on July 13.
Rounding out the class are coaches Jay Wright and Ted Owens, as well as former BYU superstar Danny Ainge, former Michigan Wolverine standout Glen Rice, and late UCLA legend Walt Hazzard. The induction ceremony is set for Oct. 22 at the College Basketball Experience in Kansas City, Missouri.

Smith, 75, is one of four coaches in college basketball history to lead as many as five programs to the NCAA tournament. Memphis and High Point are the only programs that did not reach March Madness with him as coach. During the most successful stretch of his coaching career, Smith guided his teams to the Big Dance 16 out of 17 seasons. But his last season at Texas Tech (2015-16) is the only time he reached the NCAA tournament over his final nine seasons as a Division I coach.

Aston Villa forward Lewis Dobbin is close to a move to Southampton for almost £9m.

Jacy Sheldon has already experienced plenty of change early in her WNBA career. The third-year guard is now with the Chicago Sky. While moving teams hasn't always been easy, Sheldon said she's enjoyed getting a fresh start in Chicago.
"Chicago's been great," Sheldon said before Friday's game against the Los Angeles Sparks. "It's an amazing city. It's still in the Midwest, so I'm back home. I've enjoyed it so far."
Even with all the changes, Sheldon said she's tried to keep her focus on the things she can control.
"I think with a lot of change comes a lot of focus on what you can get better at every year," she said. "The things I can control are my work ethic, and I think that's been pretty consistent my whole life."
That mindset has helped her continue developing while adjusting to different teammates, coaches, and systems.

Over the last couple of weeks, the Los Angeles Lakers have been making what has thus far been a quick and painless transition from the LeBron James era to the true start of the Luka Doncic era. James officially decided to leave the Lakers in free agency on June 30, and the team moved swiftly to trade for center Walker Kessler and nab guards Quentin Grimes and Collin ***** ton, big man Sandro Mamukelashvili and center Kevon Looney in free agency.
There are quite a few Lakers fans who have been doing back flips ever since James decided to bid farewell to the Purple and Gold. It may be a breath of fresh air in some ways for the franchise, but the 41-year-old did play eight years for it and make it relevant again upon his arrival in 2018, not to mention leading it to the NBA championship in 2020.

Sean Duncan, a Vanderbilt baseball recruit, was selected in the second round, 63rd overall in the 2026 MLB Draft by the New York Yankees on July 11.
Duncan is expected to sign and begin his professional career rather than play for the Commodores.

NASCAR has officially closed the book on one of the most talked-about incidents from last weekend's Cup Series race at Chicagoland Speedway.
Despite the on-track clash between Austin Hill and Shane van Gisbergen that ignited debate across the garage and among fans, neither driver will face penalties from NASCAR. The sanctioning body determined there was not enough evidence to conclude the contact was intentional or deserving of disciplinary action.
The ruling means both drivers head into Sunday's Quaker State 400 Available at Walmart at EchoPark Speedway without any points deductions, suspensions, or fines. But while the penalty report is complete, the rivalry is anything but.
The controversy began on Lap 48 at Chicagoland when van Gisbergen's No. 97 Chevrolet made contact with Hill's No. 33 Chevrolet entering Turns 3 and 4.

In overtime of the divisional playoff game in Denver, Bills wide receiver Brandin Cooks had a catch in his hands at the Broncos' 20-yard line that would have put Buffalo in range for the game-winning field goal and sent the Bills to the AFC Championship Game. But Denver's Ja'Quan McMillian ripped the ball out of Cooks' arms for an interception, and the Broncos kicked a game-winning field goal of their own on the next possession.
Cooks still can't believe it.
"For a week straight, I was watching it over and over," Cooks told Tim Graham of TheAthletic.com. "But I knew, as a father, that I had to put it away. If I'd have kept watching, it would have put me in some type of mood that my wife and my kids didn't deserve."
The NFL has confirmed that the official's call of an interception was correct, but Cooks thinks he had possession and was down before McMillian got the ball from him.
"I will continue to process it until I get back on the field," Cooks said, "but I think the biggest thing I can say is that I still feel like it was a catch.
