Warriors reportedly denied $285M deal that would have secured 76ers superstar LeBron James originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The Golden State Warriors were one of the most aggressive teams pursuing LeBron James during his free agency process. James is entering his 24th NBA season, yet he was pursued like a young star entering his prime.
Instead, the 41-year-old veteran is nearing the end of his legendary career. The Warriors wanted to pair Stephen Curry and James together for the final years of their careers, and at one point, Golden State was even considered one of the favorites to land him.
"I would be stunned if he picked a team that wasn't Golden State or Cleveland," a Western Conference executive told FOS' Alex Schiffer.
The Warriors were right in the middle of the race for the four-time NBA champion but ultimately fell short. James decided to sign with the Philadelphia 76ers, and a major factor in that decision was believed to be Philadelphia's acquisition of former Boston Celtics star Jaylen Brown.

Although a writer from The Athletic recently reported that Stephen Curry and the Golden State Warriors "may no longer be on the same page," another NBA insider sees things differently.
According to Shams Charania of ESPN, he "fully expects" there to be contract extension negotiations between Curry and the Warriors this summer. Charania also noted, "They (Golden State) are going to give him one (contract extension) if he wants one."
Curry is eligible to add one or two seasons on to his current deal. That said, if Curry doesn't extend with the team this summer, his relationship with the front office will be worth monitoring, especially if the team isn't able to improve on a 37-45 record that saw them finish 10th in the Western Conference.

NBA insider Shams Charania recently revealed details of the package that was offered from Golden State to Milwaukee for Giannis Antetokounmpo before he landed with the Miami Heat. According to Charania, the Warriors offered four first-round picks to land Antetokounmpo, an offer that was ultimately rebuffed by the Bucks.
Charania also revealed that Golden State was in talks to land Jaylen Brown from the Boston Celtics but wasn't comfortable giving up the same amount of draft capital that they offered for Giannis.
All in all, both Brown and Antetokounmpo wound up with other contenders, leaving the Warriors searching for another true star to pair with Stephen Curry.

The Golden State Warriors have been linked to the biggest names in basketball for years now ... and the only star-level players they've been able to pair with Stephen Curry of late are Kristaps Porzingis and Jimmy Butler.
Both Porzingis' and Butler's Golden State have been injury-riddled, and now that LeBron James opted against a move to the Bay Area, the Warriors' blockbuster options are running thin.
After missing out on Giannis Antetokounmpo and Jaylen Brown on the trade market, could the Warriors be eying a deal for a key member of the Utah Jazz's young core?
Bleacher Report believes it's possible.
Andy Bailey put together a package Golden State could offer Utah for former All-Star forward Lauri Markkanen, and while the Jazz shouldn't make any major moves this summer, the offer is ... intriguing.

Rich Paul told The Athletic he had been trying to get Bob Myers to come on the podcast for months; the invitation was not specifically tied to addressing James' free agency. The 76ers, team sources said, had thought about the potential downside of Myers' pitch being viewed as groveling publicly. But the upside of Myers — and his four rings from Golden State — speaking directly to Paul outweighed the potential minuses. "Bob Myers going on Rich Paul's podcast was brilliant," a coach for one of the other teams pursuing James told The Athletic. Myers' appearance with Paul happened July 8 — 16 days before James made the final call.

The WNBA All-Star Game is a testament to player talents and fan cultures. It's also a good measure of this league's ongoing evolution.
In its first season, the brand-new WNBA didn't even have an All-Star celebration. A decade after that, both All-Star coaches hailed from franchises soon to be relocated or disbanded. Two decades after inauguration, Maya Moore led the field with around 33,000 fan votes. Now cut to 2026, when both Paige Bueckers and Caitlin Clark exceeded the 1 million mark.
This year's All-Star Game shows how much the W has going for it right now. Bueckers, Clark, Olivia Miles, Dominique Malonga and Angel Reese lead the next generation into the spotlight. They're joined by enduring superstars like A'ja Wilson and Breanna Stewart. Gabby Williams highlights the instant success of the Golden State Valkyries, and Marina Mabrey gets love on behalf of one of this year's expansion teams, the Toronto Tempo. There are twerking mascots and blue-haired goofballs for those with eyes to see them.
Here's what to know ahead of the main event. All times listed are ET.
Venue: United Center — Chicago

All-Star weekend is always a busy couple of days for the WNBA, and this year's iteration was no exception.
On Friday, the Shooting Stars competition and 3-Point Contest occurred—and both lived up to the hype.
There were plenty of worthy shooters involved in the 3-Point Contest, but in the end, Dallas Wings rookie Azzi Fudd took home the trophy. She became the first rookie ever to win the competition. She had 24 points in the first round and then upped the ante, scoring 30 in the final.
Fudd's 30-point performance defeated the Portland Fire's Bridget Carleton, who had just 19 points in the final round after scoring 27 points in the first round.
The four other participants who were eliminated in the opening round included the Atlanta Dream's Rhyne Howard (20), Toronto Tempo's Marina Mabrey (18), Seattle Storm's Natisha Heideman (17) and Golden State Valkyries' Janelle Salaün (19).

LONDON, July 24 (Reuters) - AstraZeneca's long-time CEO Pascal Soriot has rarely put a foot wrong. The company's shares have more that quadrupled in price during his 14-year tenure, soaring above the wider FTSE 100 index and main British rival GSK.
AstraZeneca's huge diversity and ‌number of drugs on the market and success in clinical trials in different therapeutic areas set it apart from peers, giving Soriot the ‌golden touch in the eyes of investors.
Now, though, investors have some cause for concern after news this month of the unexpected failure of nerve drug Wainua in a late-stage heart disease trial, which hammered the shares and turned attention on the firm's drug R&D pipeline.
AstraZeneca's shares are down 10% this year and trail GSK and the wider London stock index over two years, with attention now on two other late-stage trials that could shape confidence in AstraZeneca's research engine and long-term growth outlook.

Barcelona have largely not had to enter the transfer window to sign superstars in recent seasons, due to the immense talent coming through La Masia.
Although the club also had their hands tied by their financial situation, it coincided with one of the best golden generations the academy has produced.
Among the flag-bearers of this golden generation is Marc Bernal. He is increasingly being viewed as one of Barcelona's most important long-term projects.
There is growing belief inside the club that the teenage midfielder can become the natural successor in the holding role that has lacked a permanent owner since Sergio Busquets left.
According to SPORT, Bernal is regarded as Barcelona's version of Rodri, a midfielder capable of controlling games from the base of midfield and becoming the foundation of both Barça and Spain for years to come.

Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice? Shame on me. Win the SEC twice in a row over the teams that league media had thought would take home the trophy? Well then people decide they won't be fooled again.
The ******* embled voters at SEC Media Days have tabbed the Red and Black to be back in Atlanta this December. Georgia is projected to finish first in the SEC, according to the predicted order of finish poll conducted at Media Days. The Bulldogs comfortably beat out the Texas Longhorns for the top spot ahead of the 2026 season.
The 'Dawgs received 88 votes to be crowned SEC Champions on December 5 in Atlanta at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, with Texas being picked to be the Bulldogs' opponent. The ''Horns picked up 57 votes to win the ******* le under the leadership of reputed genius Steve Sarkisian and golden child Arch Manning, who has one more year to win one of the three Heisman Trophies Longhorn fans ******* ured me he'd pick up before leaving Austin.
Before you get too excited, bear in mind that only 10 times since the league began playing a championship game in 1992 has the predicted preseason champion at SEC Media Days gone on to win the SEC Championship Game. But there's no doubt that a Bulldog team bringing back loads of talent and experience on both sides of the ball will be a contender once again.

The City of Bron-erly Love has welcomed a new superstar.
The basketball world was holding their breath all summer until Friday, July 24 when LeBron James announced that he is joining the Philadelphia 76ers.
The four-time NBA champion and league's all-time leading scorer was reportedly deciding between Philadelphia, joining Stephen Curry on the Golden State Warriors, a return to the Miami Heat or a comeback to his hometown team, the Cleveland Cavaliers.
Besides the sports world expressing their excitement, Philadelphia rejoiced at the news. The future Hall of Famer will join former NBA MVP Joel Embiid and 2024 NBA Finals champion Jaylen Brown, who was shockingly traded from the Boston Celtics earlier in the month.

LeBron James, as you would expect for one of the greatest athletes in history, had a long list of options this summer.
In Cleveland, he had a play for the romantics. It was a return home to where it started, a return home to where he won his most historically significant ****** le, a guaranteed victory lap no matter what happened in his final year(s) with the Cavaliers.
In Miami, he had familiarity. This was the only place where he had won multiple ****** les, in a market that isn't quite as challenging to its stars, with a lead star in Giannis who could lead the team himself.
Even in Golden State, where he'd have to convince longtime rival fans to embrace him as Steph Curry's partner, there would be no real burden of expectation. The prospect of LeBron with the Warriors had been referred to as an NBA version of the Expendables — a box office draw with familiar faces, but removed from the primes of all involved.
"There were only three real choices," a source familiar with LeBron's thinking told PHLY on Friday night. "The draw of Golden State was just about how fun it would be to play with Steph and Dray."

In a promotional video posted to social media on Friday, July 24, agent Rich Paul broke out his famous whiteboard featured on the "Game Over" podcast he co-hosts with Max Kellerman and circled a group of names representing the Philadelphia 76ers in red marker.

John Tortorella hasn't closed the door on coaching at 68, some two months after his latest, brief stint ended two wins short of a Stanley Cup and not being rehired by the Vegas Golden Knights.
"Oh, I want to coach," Tortorella told The Athletic this week in a story posted on Friday. "I want to coach now. I'm not sure if that happens, and that's where I am in my career. But I wanted to coach that Vegas team. I told (general manager Kelly McCrimmon) that."
Tortorella's tenure in Vegas began with him replacing the fired Bruce Cassidy with eight games left in the regular season. And it ended in mid-June with the Golden Knights losing the Stanley Cup Final in six games to the Carolina Hurricanes.
Though Tortorella pushed for his return, he said he respected McCrimmon's decision to promote minor-league coach Ryan Craig.
"They've been developing (Craig) for a number of years there," he said. "He's a good coach and a good man."

The Buffalo Bills have searched for years to find the best combination of pass rushers that they can acquire. General manager Brandon Beane has tinkered with the defensive line multiple times throughout his tenure, pouring tremendous resources into the position over the last decade.
Have the Bills found a combination that works? I’d vote no, as they continuously seem to be searching for that golden goose at edge rusher who can consistently harrass opposing quarterbacks without the need for a blitz. That doesn’t mean that every signing Beane has made has been poor, as some of those acquisitions were derailed less by the player’s inability to perform and more by unfortunate injuries. Think Von Miller as one possible example.
In today’s installment of “91 players in 91 days,” we discuss another pass-rusher whose first year with the team was derailed by a major injury.

NBA commissioner Adam Silver may regret calling out LeBron James to decide where he will play next season. Real Madrid have been in the market for a new midfielder for much of the summer transfer window, but until now, their efforts have been in vain. They were forced to end their interest in Enzo Fernandez after they were priced out of a move by Chelsea, although that has seen them turn their attention back to Rodri.
It’s been a summer to remember so far for Rodri, who captained Spain to glory at the 2026 World Cup. He was awarded the Golden Ball for his individual efforts, and his performances have reportedly brought Real Madrid back to the table.
Rodri is a player that Real Madrid have appreciated for some time, but any chance of him being pursued looked dead in the water earlier this summer. This no longer appears to be the case, and the fact that he could be available for a reduced price – due to his contract expiring in 2027 – makes him an even more attractive option for the Bernabeu club.
However, Real Madrid’s interest is not particularly advanced at this stage. According to Diario AS, sources from within Manchester City have denied any contact over a Rodri deal, with the same people claiming that the speculation has only come about because of the 30-year-old’s excellent performances at the World Cup.
It would make a lot of sense for Real Madrid to go for Rodri this summer. He will be available on a cut-price deal if he continues to resist a new Man City contract, and as his performances at the World Cup showed, he is back to being one of the best midfielders in the world.

Popular Golden State Warriors head coach Steve Kerr has been criticized for not doing a great job at developing young talent in recent years. However, it appears that Kerr has learned from past mistakes and is already fully committing to Warriors' rookie Yaxel Lendeborg. Fans fearful of Kerr barely playing Lendeborg can rest easier after a new report from a Golden State insider.
ESPN's Anthony Slater revealed that Kerr is already giving a vote of confidence to Lendeborg and may even start the rookie:
"I asked him about his early conversations with Steve Kerr, and he mentioned, 'Hey, you know, Steve has a history of not playing rookies,' but basically said, you know, he's different, and Steve Kerr's already told him he might start."
Lendeborg has already received more confidence from Kerr than the players that never got to fulfill their potential in Golden State. The older age of Lendeborg as a 22 year old who spent more time in college likely impresses Kerr. Next season's roster also will see the Warriors needing new talent to step up, especially if they can't land LeBron James in free agency. Kerr is ready to give Lendeborg a fair chance to prove he can help the team win.
Lendeborg has joked multiple times about trying to change the narrative that Golden State won't play rookies. Jonathan ****** inga is the biggest reason why Kerr is judged for not being the best coach for young players to get a realistic chance at proving their worth.

The Golden State Warriors have put together their teams through a variety of ways over the years, yet few approaches have proven as successful as the NBA draft. More than anything else, the most talented players to represent the Warriors have arrived in Golden State either by being selected directly in the annual draft or through trades executed on that same night.
The Golden State Warriors have taken many of their top stars through the draft, but have also landed a number of notable players over the years as well. From tiny colleges to blue blood programs, these alumni have contributed significantly to the team's roster over the years. Dillon Brooks reveals the story behind his viral meme laughing at LeBron James originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The Phoenix Suns might have been eliminated early in the 2026 NBA Playoffs, but some of their players felt it throughout the postseason. One of them was Dillon Brooks, who was present at Crypto.com Arena during the matchup between the Los Angeles Lakers and the Oklahoma City Thunder.
Since Brooks is known to be one of the peskiest players in the league who loves annoying his matchups, he went there to have some fun with his matchups, including LeBron James. Brooks even went viral with a clip of him laughing at LeBron, becoming a meme for a lot of people on social media.
After a successful season with the Suns, Brooks was elated. They might have lost early in the Playoffs, but Brooks is known to create chaos even when he is not playing. He loves talking trash and having fun with his opponents, and it felt like he had it out for LeBron in particular.
While Brooks is known to beef with the Golden State Warriors, he does have a special spot for LeBron as well, especially with their previous matchup back in the 2023 NBA Playoffs. He even called LeBron old back then, but he also admitted that he pokes the bear all the time.

Although LeBron James' status is uncertain, the Golden State Warriors are likely to extend former two-time MVP Stephen Curry in some capacity this summer. Curry has one season remaining on his deal, but according to Anthony Slater, the Warriors would be interested in giving him a one-year or two-year max contract extension.
A one-year extension would align the contracts of both Curry and Steve Kerr, who signed a two-year extension this offseason, and could offer the opportunity for his "Splash Brother," Klay Thompson, to join him in the Bay Area for the 2027-28 season. However, it remains to be seen if Curry has plans to play beyond the 2027-28 campaign. By then, Curry will be 40 years old with 19 years of NBA experience.

Bronny James says he does not know where his father will play next season as LeBron James continues weighing offers from teams across the NBA.
The Los Angeles Lakers guard was approached by streamer Biggy22x and asked whether LeBron might join Stephen Curry and the Golden State Warriors. Bronny laughed but offered no indication that a deal was developing.
LeBron has already informed the Lakers that he will play elsewhere during the 2026-27 season, ending his eight-year run in Los Angeles. He has not announced his next team, and agent Rich Paul says the decision will not be rushed.
The exchange began with Biggy22x asking Bronny to share an encouraging message for younger viewers. The conversation then shifted to the free agency question dominating the NBA offseason.
When the streamer asked directly whether LeBron was signing with Golden State, Bronny responded "Man, I don't know where he's going". "That would be crazy if he did", Bronny said.
