Over 11,000 people participated in the City of Austin's adult year-round sports leagues in 2024, with growth among seniors and transplants expected in 2025 and 2026. On Friday, players and team leaders in the program were notified the city is canceling its indoor leagues, including basketball and volleyball, to save $400,000.
"The approved reduction removes two recreational programming positions and **** ociated funding related to adult indoor sports operations, totaling an estimated savings of $400,000," reads a statement from the city's department. "It is one of the reductions made within Austin Parks and Recreation, and similar savings measures were approved across other General Fund departments."
According to a City of Austin Parks and Recreation presentation, the department had 1,113 team sign-ups in 2024 across all adult sports, including outdoor leagues like softball and flag football. With registration costs at $350 per team, the department generated approximately $389,550 in revenue. The city's basketball leagues have all been canceled, with refunds to teams to follow.

Noted golf architect Tom Fazio, whose courses have a weighty presence on various Golfweek's Best course rankings lists, has signed on for something new. He will join forces with CityGolf USA to design eight indoor golf courses, starting with a new Nashville facility that will open in the winter of 2026 and that combines simulator golf with real greens and surrounds built with artificial turf.
CityGolf USA will use simulators to take players from tee to green, at which point the simulator screen will be lifted to reveal a green complex with the artificial turf. If it all sounds familiar, it's similar to what the TGL indoor league has built at Palm Beach State College in Florida, where teams of top touring professionals such as Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy play televised matches.
The first CityGolf USA location will take up 174,000 square feet at City View Building 6 in Nashville. The business will include a high-end restaurant, a bar, event ******* es, driving range bays and a short-game practice area. Fazio will design the 18-hole course in concert with Fazio Design Technologies.

When Gerald Henderson got to Duke, it didn't take long for people to understand that he was a sensational talent. The most electrifying part of his game, though, the thing that got people out of their seats, was his leaping ability.
Henderson is one of the best dunkers to ever come through Cameron Indoor Stadium.

At the 2009 NBA Combine, his maximum vertical was measured at 35 inches, but, as Jay Bilas says at the end of this video, he seems to have an extra step on his ladder that most guys don't have.

Will this be the year that the tight end position finally lives up to its potential? For years we've hoped for a deep group of TEs riddled with talent at every draft point, only to end up with the same elite group and then a bunch of "Play and pray" options. But maybe this season will be different. Our Yahoo ****** ysts take a look at the tight end position and share their breakout candidate for 2026.
Breakouts tend to exist at the intersection of talent and situation. And for Brenton Strange, the talent piece of the equation isn't hard to see. Since joining the Jaguars in '23, Strange's routes and target share have been on an upward trajectory. The Penn State product barely saw the field his rookie season (2.2% target rate), but he evolved into one of Trevor Lawrence's go-to options as Jacksonville marched toward the playoffs.
After returning from a hip injury sustained in Week 5, Strange supplanted Brian Thomas Jr. as the "WR3" (16.6% share) and even led the team in red-zone targets (14). Plus, the added cardio has only allowed us to see more of his athletic ability, as his yards per route run (9th among all TEs in '25 – min. 10 games played) and YAC per reception picked up between Years 2 and 3.
But I'll admit Strange's situation is, well, strange! The Jaguars traded for and compensated Jakobi Meyers for bringing the passing game to life and got a breakout performance from their 6th-round WR out of the same draft class. Oh, and Thomas Jr. and Travis Hunter are still there. The "lot of mouths to feed" argument will keep Strange's draft-cost down, but let's not forget his productivity and utility within this offense. — Chris Allen
After the Rashid Shaheed trade, Johnson was the TE5 in yards per game and TE8 in receptions per game from Week 10 on. With Jordyn Tyson out until the Week 6-9 range, Johnson should start out strong, as this is the same Saints receiving corps as it was during that explosive sample. The Saints have the advantages of playing against the NFC South, playing indoors and operating in the No. 1 neutral pace offense. Johnson is also good! Watch him!

A series of fights and skirmishes threatened to derail the New Orleans Saints' joint practice session with the Dallas Cowboys, but the Saints managed to get through the afternoon without any fight-related injuries. That's not to say they got out of it unscathed. Several players exited practice early, two of them starters: running back Alvin Kamara and cornerback Quincy Riley. The severity of their injuries is not yet known.
"Only two guys who weren't able to finish practice were Alvin with a knee, and then Quincy with a groin," head coach Kellen Moore told reporters afterwards. "Other than that, good work, obviously you guys saw the chippiness of it. Not the ideal flow of a joint practice but we got the work that we needed. We'll have one more Thursday with the Rams, we've had a number (of practices) with those guys before, so (not worried)."
Moore later clarified that wide receiver Ronnie Bell left the practice with heat-related issues; he was seen walking slowly too the sideline before being driven indoors on a trainer's cart without his jersey. Wide receiver Chris Olave, the team's top wide receiver, briefly received attention from trainers after taking a hit on a catch but remained on the sidelines to observe the rest of practice. He later returned for the final sequence of team drills in a red zone period.
Fans and reporters covering the joint practice counted as many as six, seven, ten or more dustups over the course of the two-hour practice session. Both teams were fortunate to get out of it without any serious injuries from the fists and helmets flying around. We'll see if tempers flare up again on Thursday when the Saints and Rams meet for their own joint practice session.

With 12 days remaining before the Philadelphia Cycling Classic, former Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter and former first lady Lisa Nutter are cheering on the return of a race they say is an important part of the city's cycling culture.
The couple recently spoke about their involvement in bringing the event back and about their own connection to the sport, which extends beyond advocacy and into competition.
While Lisa Nutter is known as a supporter of cycling, she is also a competitive athlete who competes in indoor track cycling races.
Michael Nutter noted her accomplishments on the track: "Four-time national champion in track cycling. Two different age groups."
"For me, the competition is in the velodrome," Lisa Nutter said, explaining the lightning-fast sport. "I'm a sprinter so our races are seconds long."

Georgia Hunter Bell nonchalantly raised her arms to the delight of a euphoric Birmingham home crowd after a supreme display to win a first European 1,500m crown. Three and a half laps of sheer dominance underlined a rare treble following victories at the World Indoor Championships and Commonwealth Games.
But despite immense success in 2026, the Olympic and World medalist quickly allowed her mind to drift before exiting the Alexander Stadium. Her curiosity and appetite for more, even "a bit of fomo," left her imagining what role she might have played in the ***** anic 800m clash before, as European champion Audrey Werro took down Hunter Bell's teammate Keely Hodgkinson and Femke Broeders-Bol.
Well, we will soon gain some insight, after it was confirmed that Hunter Bell will join that star-studded trio and World champion Lilian Odira in the Zurich Diamond League 800m next Thursday, in what could whet the appetite for a golden era in the event in the build-up to LA28.
"It was really close between me and Werro last year in Zurich," Hunter Bell tells the Independent when looking ahead to the closing stages of her season. "It was a dip on the line, but this year is such a good line-up. It's me, Keely, Werro, Femke and Lilian. I think it will be a really great race.

The largest indoor pickleball event held anywhere in the world was held last weekend, with 3,400+ players descending into Birmingham, England for the 2026 English Open, powered by the ****** ociation of Pickleball Players (APP) and continuing a multi-year relationship between the US-based tour and the biggest European organization out there.
Let's do a quick recap of the results, highlighting the winners, the upsets, and the top International players who made waves. The event featured a slew of pros from the US, joined by some of Europe's top players and even some visitors from the East.
Ignasi De Rueda, who plays out of Barcelona and is one of the top Spanish players who plays primarily out of the continent survived the massive draw to take gold. It doesn't take much for Bailey Ettridge to put things in perspective for himself while living out a dream and competing for a starting spot on Oregon football's makeshift practice fields outside the Ducks' in-progress state-of-the-art indoor practice facility aside Autzen Stadium.
Not even two years ago, the 28-year-old transfer punter was doing that same work in Australia — using torches and plasma cutters to size metal pieces, joining metals and doing various other construction work — though not on any projects of quite that scale.
"When I look out there, I'm like, I could still be doing that in Australia," Ettridge said. "I'm here on the other side, watching them do it, playing football."
One year ago, Ettridge had never played in front a crowd of over 500, had never played in a college football game and until halfway through 2025, had not truly considered punting in America as wholly viable.
The Geelong, Australia-born Ettridge had been playing Australia rules football since he was 5 years old and started work in construction at the age of 16.

Leading the Rattlers with big-play throws and great escapes, Meylor carried the Rattlers to a 62-51 victory over the Green Bay Blizzard on Sunday, Aug. 16, before a crowd of 4,900 at Tucson Arena for the Indoor Football League national championship.
It was the Rattlers' third IFL ***** le since entering the league in 2017 and their eighth as a franchise. The first five came in the Arena Football League. The Rattlers' past six ***** les have come under coach Kevin Guy.
Last year, when Meylor was the league's MVP for Green Bay, he came up 1 yard short of a championship, stuffed just short of the goal line as time expired in a 64-61 loss to the Vegas Knight Hawks at the same arena.
This time, the Blizzard stopped Meylor only once — in the first series of the game.

Max Meylor threw for three touchdowns and ran for two more to lead the Arizona Rattlers past the Green Bay Blizzard 62-51 to win the 2026 Indoor Football League championship.
The teams traded touchdowns for much of the game until the Rattlers finally got the separation they needed midway through the fourth quarter when they recovered a botched snap by the Blizzard on an extra-point attempt for two points. Instead of the game being tied, Arizona led 48-45 and then went down and scored another touchdown on the ensuring possession to take control of the game.
Arizona won its second championship in the past three years. The Rattlers upset the defending champion Vegas Knight Hawks in the conference semifinals and then beat the No. 1 seed San Diego Strike Force to win the Western Conference before knocking out the East champion Blizzard.
Meylor was named the championship game MVP after throwing for 103 yards and running for 90 to go along with his five touchdowns. Kymani Clark also rushed for a pair of TDs.
Blizzard quarterback Liam Thompson, who was named the 2026 IFL MVP earlier in the week, threw four touchdown passes and ran for another score. He fumbled into the end zone while trying for a sixth touchdown that Arizona recovered with 26 seconds left to ice the game.

It was a big weekend on the campus of Duke University as students moved back in to prepare for the start of the new school year.
Jon Scheyer, his family and the coaching staff were there to lend a hand to parents and incoming students who needed help, with Scheyer's son, Jett, gifting an item we all needed in our dorm room: a mini basketball hoop.
To welcome the class of 2030, Scheyer spoke to the incoming freshmen in Cameron Indoor Stadium, surely to fill them in on the many traditions and chants of the Cameron Crazies.
While Scheyer does have some newcomers on his team, including transfers John Blackwell and Drew Scharnowski, joining freshmen Cam Williams, Bryson Howard, Deron Rippey, among others, those guys have been on campus this summer looking to get ready for the 2026-27 season, in which the Blue Devils are already one of the favorites to bring home the national ******* le.

Following a Thursday night preseason opener tie, the Indianapolis Colts were back in action indoors during otherwise a soggy late Saturday afternoon—for what was a rather uneventful training camp practice, with the team primarily focusing on end zone work.
I was actually able to attend this one as a credentialed member of the media, so I'll change the format up a bit:
For another training camp practice, it looked like the Colts secondary got the better of the Indianapolis wide receivers, especially with Alec Pierce still out (who we'll get to in a bit here). That seems to have been a common theme so far this training camp, and when the trio of Sauce Gardner, Charvarius Ward, and Justin Walley are all fully healthy, the Colts project to have one of the best cornerback rooms atop their depth chart in the entire league.
In particular, starting cornerback Justin Walley, who was playing on the outside in place of Ward in this one, had at least a few deflections of note. Oftentimes, Jones was forced to hold the football in the passing pocket until a Colts receiver could finally free up from tight coverage. That may not happen in a real game, where the pass rush will get to him a lot quicker and not let up, likely seeing more 'coverage sacks.'
That being said, while the Colts secondary did stifle Jones for much of the afternoon, he connected on at least a few touchdowns passes in 11-on-11 red zone work, including to Josh Downs, who came up gingerly after the acrobatic touchdown catch but was able to walk off the field and be attended to by trainers. Downs did later return to practice. Ashton Dulin, Seth McGowan, Laquon Treadwell, and Tyler Warren, who also had an acrobatic dandy, caught the other touchdown receptions from Jones on the afternoon from what I saw.

With the weather forcing the team to move Saturday's training camp practice indoors, the Indianapolis Colts held a tight hour-long session at Droplight Grand Park Sports Campus focused primarily inside the red zone.
Starting quarterback Daniel Jones showcased his ability to recognize a different mix of coverages and deliver strong throws in closed ******* e. Jones noticed the defense sitting underneath Cover 2 and split the coverage with a dart to tight end Tyler Warren on a wheel route for a 20-yard touchdown.
Jones later added some nice touch to toss a dime toward the far pylon for receiver Josh Downs, who made a leaping grab over cornerback Justin Walley for a 10-yard touchdown catch. Downs came down hard to make the sensational catch and briefly left the field to jog off some tightness in his right hamstring, but he later returned for the final team period and caught a short hitch on his first play back on the field.
Jones was able to create plays while rolling out in ******* e, too. Jones faked the play action, rolled right, released the throw while on the move and placed it just behind receiver Laquon Treadwell, who adjusted to the pass thrown near his hip and held on for a 10-yard touchdown in tight coverage. Jones finished the practice completing 7-of-14 passes, with a few incompletions on plays where he willingly decided it was best to throw the ball away rather than force a pass. The lone mistake nearly resulted in a turnover when rookie linebacker Bryce Boettcher got a hand on one of Jones' throws for what could have been a error near the goal line. Jones stationoed himself in the pocket and allowed the plays to develop, evidenced best on his final throw that was caught by Ashton Dulin in the end zone.
The second-string quarterback competition kept reps split between Anthony Richardson Sr. and Riley Leonard as both passers had just five completions during the short practice. Richardson delivered a frozen rope on a comeback route to tight end Will Mallory toward the far pylon for a 10-yard touchdown, then he later connected with receiver Raylen Sharpe on a slant and a corner route in the final team drill. On June 23, Curaleaf sent a formal indication of interest, offering a mutual non-disclosure agreement and 30 days of exclusive reciprocal due diligence. That letter, which Curaleaf later published on its website, confirms this part of Jordan's account. A follow-up call went nowhere, Jordan says.
