It's the economy, stupid.
Political strategist James Carville coined that phrase during Bill Clinton's 1992 presidential run against George H.W. Bush to remind Democrats to focus on pocketbook issues, but some ***** ysts said that logic can also be applied to keep Social Security afloat.
The trust fund that supplements incoming payroll taxes to pay monthly Social Security benefits is expected to run dry by the end of 2032, according to the program's trustees. When that happens, the law requires benefits to be reduced by an estimated 22% to ensure the program's costs do not exceed its revenues.
While Congress has yet to raise taxes, cut benefits, or do both to keep affording payouts as population growth slows, some economists say the strongest Social Security reforms may not look like Social Security policy at all. Instead, they say, Congress should shift its focus to managing the economy better to encourage more Americans to work and earn.
"Social Security is a reflection of, and is supported by, the strength of the economy," said economist and Social Security expert Kathryn Anne Edwards at center-left think tank Roosevelt Institute. "Who is working, how much they earn, how healthy they are, and how much they save matter more than the head count. People could live longer, have fewer kids, and have a solvent Social Security if workers earned enough money."

Meanwhile, compatriot Keanna Macinnes finished fifth in the women's 100m ******* erfly final won by world silver medallist Roos Vanotterdijk of Belgium.

Aug. 5—A challenging year awaits Wayne in the eyes of head coach Roosevelt Mukes.
The Warriors nonconference schedule consists of a road game at Fairfield before hosting state powers Cincinnati St. Xavier and Lakewood St. Edward. The rigors of Greater Western Ohio Conference play follows.
"That's why you come to a place like Wayne High School to play a schedule like that and just compete," Mukes said.
Wayne competed well in 2025. The Warriors reached the Region 2 final for a second consecutive season. That has the team hungry to take the next step needed to get back to the state final for the first time since 2015.
"Just knowing what the seniors what they left off, we got to finish what they [started]," senior Aaden Curtis said.

MK Dons have signed winger Sam Silvera on a free transfer after he was released by Middlesbrough at the end of last season.
The 25-year-old was a first-choice player under former Boro boss Rob Edwards at the beginning of the 2025-26 season but was unable to retain a regular place in the side after suffering a foot injury in February.
He is an Australian international, earning eight caps, but was not part of the Socceroos' 26-man World Cup squad this summer.
Silvera made 65 appearances for Middlesbrough across three seasons, scoring eight goals.
He becomes MK Dons' sixth signing of the summer transfer window as they prepare for life back in League One, their first season in the third tier since the 2022-23 campaign.

Real Madrid have been quiet on the signing front for several weeks, but they could be about to land a major double blow. They are in talks to sign Yan Diomande from RB Leipzig, while efforts are also being made to land Manchester City and Spain superstar Rodri.
Going into the summer, Real Madrid were clear that a top-level midfielder was wanted to finally fill the voids left by Toni Kroos and Luka Modric. Head coach Jose Mourinho had wanted Enzo Fernandez, but after Chelsea priced him out of a move, they have since turned their attention to Rodri.
Real Madrid have been keen on Rodri for some time, although it was expected that they would not move for him this summer. But with the Fernandez snub and his top performances for Spain at the 2026 World Cup, the decision has been made for a deal to be sought for the Man City man, as reported by The Athletic's David Ornstein.
There is every chance that Real Madrid manage to get a deal done for Rodri. Man City will be forced to accept a reduced fee if they sell, given that the 30-year-old has less than a year remaining on his contract in Manchester. Because of this, confidence is high within Los Blancos that a deal can be done for one of the world's best midfielders to join Mourinho's squad for the 2026-27 season and beyond.
Furthermore, Rodri is desperate to join Real Madrid this summer, as per Ben Jacobs. He is keen to return to the Spanish capital, where he previously played for Atletico Madrid, for both sporting and family reasons, and this had led him to make it known that he will not sign a new Man City contract – thus making it even more likely that he ends up at the Bernabeu.

Socceroos World Cup star Cristian Volpato has allegedly tested positive for cocaine after police twice stopped him for speeding in Sydney on the same night.
The 22-year-old Australia midfielder was stopped in a BMW Coupe on the Anzac Bridge at 11:05pm local time on Thursday night after he was caught travelling between 86-94km/h in a 60km/h zone, police said.
He was subjected to a roadside breath test, which returned a negative result.
However, Volpato allegedly returned a positive result for cocaine when he was stopped two hours later for travelling at 109km/h in the same 60km/h zone.
New South Wales state police said Volpato was issued an infringement notice for excess speed, while his international driver's licence was suspended for six months - which means he cannot drive in New South Wales.

Scotland goalkeeper Angus Gunn suffered a nightmare debut for San Jose Earthquakes as they slumped to a 4-0 defeat at home to Orlando City in their first match following Major League Soccer's break for the World Cup.
It was the 30-year-old's first game since his national side failed to qualify for the knockout stages following a 3-0 loss to Brazil in their final group game - and his first club game since coming on as a substitute in Nottingham Forest's 1-1 Premier League draw with Crystal Palace in February.
But, in truth, Gunn could take little blame for any of the goals while also producing a couple of saves that prevented a more painful loss for Bruce Arena's hosts.

Former Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Welterweight kingpin Kamaru Usman suffered a lopsided unanimous decision loss to former Middleweight roost-ruler Dricus du Plessis in the main event of UFC Oklahoma City last weekend (Sat., July 18, 2026) inside Paycom Center in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.
While Usman had a strong fifth round, the former Welterweight champion was not very competitive with Du Plessis for most of the fight. He was rocked several times, struggled to close distance and was unable to consistently take the South African down to implement his wrestling game.
As it turns out, there may have been a pretty significant reason for that.
Usman was apparently compromised.

The last time "Fighting Rooster" Zhang Peimian faced Jonathan Di Bella, he was 19 years old, fighting for a World ******* le, and not yet ready for everything that came with it.
Nearly four years later, that version of him no longer exists.
On Friday, July 17, Zhang will challenge the reigning ONE Strawweight Kickboxing World Champion for the gold in the main event of The Inner Circle 22, which goes down live at the iconic Lumpinee Stadium in Bangkok, Thailand. It will stream exclusively for members via live.onefc.com.
The rematch is more than three and a half years in the making, and the Chinese fighter stepping into the ring this time is a fundamentally different competitor from the teenager who walked into the vacant ONE Strawweight Kickboxing World ******* le clash at ONE 162 in October 2022.
The first encounter was a genuine five-round war. Zhang, who was already considered one of the most gifted young strikers in the organization, went toe-to-toe with the Italian-Canadian southpaw and made him work for every inch. His trademark left hook and low kicks found a home on Di Bella throughout the contest.

South Africa star Jayden Adams has died at the age of 25 with the Bafana Bafana community mourning the shock loss just weeks after he featured at World Cup 2026.
The Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder played three times for his country and was part of Hugo Broos' side that advanced to the last 32, creating history in the first knockout World Cup match in their history before being eliminated by co-hosts Canada.
Adams played all three group games, starting the opener against Mexico and then featuring as a substitute against Czech Republic and South Korea.
Details surrounding Adams' passing remain unclear, with the South African Football Players Union paying tribute to the player in a statement: "The SAFPU is devastated by the untimely passing of Mamelodi Sundowns and Bafana Bafana midfielder, Jayden Adams.

OTTUMWA — You never know when an opportunity will arise.
Quinn Larsen, for example, took full advantage of an opportunity to produce a power surge like few Ottumwa hitters have experienced. Stepping up with the first game of an Iowa Alliance Conference south division doubleheader at Des Moines East on the line, Larsen connected on the first of five home runs in six trips to the plate including a game-winning home run against the Scarlets and a two-run home run in a 7-1 win over ninth-ranked (4A) Fort Dodge.
The power surge helped spur Ottumwa to six wins in seven games at a key point of the season. The run not only helped the Bulldogs reach 20 wins in a season for the sixth straight summer, but helped Ottumwa to secure at least one extra home game this season as the Bulldogs prepare to host Iowa City High in a Class 4A, Substate 8 first round contest on Friday.
"It's a really good way to look at it. Our doubleheader with Iowa City Liberty didn't have to be our last two home games of the season," Larsen said. "If we played our best baseball, we knew we could earn this opportunity."
While the results weren't always in Ottumwa's favor, the lessons learned from a competitive schedule that featured 12 games against teams that spent time in the Class 4A statewide rankings this season. Three straight conference wins over Des Moines Roosevelt and Des Moines North, in which the Bulldogs outscored the Roughriders and Polar Bears 43-11, helped Ottumwa secure its 15th winning season in 16 years despite opening with four straight losses to top-10 opponents West Des Moines Valley and Indianola.
Australia goalkeeper Patrick Beach had no idea he was going to be taken off for the World Cup penalty shootout with Egypt Friday as coach Tony Popovic came under fire for the baffling decision.
Beach, 22, headed to the tournament as number two to seasoned Socceroos shot-stopper and captain Mathew Ryan.
But in a shock he started every game and proved rock solid, only to be substituted deep into extra-time in the last 32 clash against Egypt in Dallas as penalties loomed.
Popovic brought on Ryan but he failed to pull off a save and Egypt won 4-2 on spot kicks to set up a last-16 meeting with Argentina after the game finished at 1-1.
"You have to talk to the coaches about that," Beach told Australian media of the goalkeeping switch.

Egypt coach Hossam Hassan cast doubt on whether talisman Mohamed Salah will start their World Cup last-32 showdown with Australia on Friday in Texas following a hamstring problem.
Salah took part in training with the rest of the squad in Dallas on Thursday, albeit a lighter session in front of the cameras.
The 34-year-old former Liverpool superstar was forced off the pitch in the 57th minute of Egypt's final group game, a 1-1 draw with Iran a week ago.
The striker placed an icepack under his left thigh, throwing his participation against the Socceroos in doubt.
"We tried to introduce him to partial training yesterday only," Hassan said on Thursday, the eve of the match at the home of the Dallas Cowboys.

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump on Wednesday is taking his maiden voyage on a new Air Force One — a retrofitted Boeing 747 worth $400 million gifted by Qatar that embeds his personality more deeply into the institution of the American presidency.
Gone is the trademark light blue hull that helped Air Force One blend into the sky. The refurbished jet is painted to Trump's preferred color scheme of a navy belly and red and gold stripes. It has the luxury features that the president believes a commander-in-chief's entourage should have — plush carpets, lie-flat seats, wood paneling and a presidential seal on the seat belts, according to reported tours of the plane.
Trump told reporters that he was proud of the luxurious plane. "You can do two things: You can low-key it, or you can show it," he said.
The jet is carrying Trump to North Dakota to see the Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library, its first official visitor ahead of its opening on the nation's 250th anniversary.
The gift from the Middle Eastern power raised ethical concerns, but Trump saw the plane as a necessary replacement to the 35-year-old planes that had previously ferried him as president.

If you know anything about former German national team star Toni Kroos, it is that he will just about always say what is on his mind and will almost never hold back.
When discussing the German national team on his podcast (Kroos & Kroos: die WM unter der Lupe), Kroos came out with both barrels blazing.
“We currently don’t have a single world-class player. We have players with world-class potential, but that doesn’t mean they are world-class. The world-class players are currently deciding all the World Cup matches — and they are leading the top goalscorers’ list. We don’t have a single one there, we have to be honest about that. Back when we had successful tournaments, I always had the feeling we could shift into a higher gear. This team is currently no longer capable of that. We just think we’re better than Paraguay – and we’ll win somehow,” Kroos said (as captured by iMiaSanMia).
Kroos’ **** sment will be celebrated by some and a harsh reminder of how far Germany has fallen for others.
Expect this kind of commentary to be prevalent in the coming days as Germans attempt to process a massive World Cup disappointment. For the third straight tournament, German fans have been left unfulfilled.

An underrated pleasure for spectators at every World Cup is observing the managers. If club football, an increasingly regimented domain of set pieces and systems, is all about structure, international soccer is much more a matter of style – and at this tournament, the theatrics of the sport's touchline strutters have been rich with emotion and figurative power.
Didier Deschamps patrols his technical area with the watchful pride of an outer-arrondissement charcutier. Luis de la Fuente is a veteran wealth manager at Banco Santander. ***** an's Hajime Moriyasu is about to go postal at his dreary office job in a Kiyoshi Kurosawa film. Socceroos coach Tony Popovic looks like he's on his way to MC a wedding at Sydney's King Tomislav Croatian Club. And Carlo Ancelotti is … well, he's just Carlo Ancelotti, a man with Champions League-winning eyebrows whose fierce allegiance to his three-piece suit, even through the worst of a North American summer, suggests he's somehow in command of his own climate.

But one man has stood hair and shoulders above the rest. On the field, through victory and defeat, Ecuador have been exactly what everyone imagined they would be before the tournament began: a team with an elite defensive and midfield spine that lacks any real punch up front. But on the sidelines and in the press conferences, they have absolutely dominated, and that's all down to the gaúcho Fabio they have leading their team. With his streaks of dirty blond hair, chinstrap of stubble, and Boeing 747 nose, Sebastián Beccacece looks like the kind of manager who should do well at the World Cup, regardless of results on the pitch. He's 45 years old, leading a country other than his native Argentina, and arrives at this tournament boasting a fairly modest coaching record, having worked as an ***** istant under Jorge Sampaoli with Chile and managed the Spanish club side Elche to no great success.
The look, the journeyman résumé, and the responsibility for a team widely seen as a tournament dark horse: the raw ingredients were all there, before this World Cup began, for Beccacece to break out as a cult managerial hero. In previous World Cups it's been the duty of middle-aged Frenchmen – exiles and vagabonds like Bruno Metsu, Philippe Troussier, and Hervé Renard, the crisp white shirt who never lets Africa down – to carry the cultural burden of being the tournament's eccentrics-in-chief; could an Argentinian ease the weight of French responsibility? Things did not start well. In the wake of Ecuador's first two matches at this tournament, Beccacece was on the brink. A last-minute defeat to a young and talented Côte d'Ivoire side was perhaps forgivable, but after La Tri suffered the humiliation of a scoreless draw against tiny Curaçao, everything about Beccacece's management – his tactics, his selections, his communication style, even his choice of dress, which saw him take

What begins in Cleveland, doesn’t stay in Cleveland, allegedly.
At least that’s what’s contended in the indictment of former NBA players Malik Beasley and Ed Davis, a former Cavalier, according to The Athletic.
Through nine NBA seasons, Beasley, who last played for the Detroit Pistons, made approximately $60 million, but wrecked his finances due to significant gambling losses.
Those problems came home to roost when Davis, a friend and teammate while at the Minnesota Timberwolves in the 2020-21 season, loaned Beasley money. They then collaborated to fix Beasley’s performance, according to the report.
The pair allegedly fixed Beasley’s performance four times beginning with a Jan. 26, 2024 game against the Cavaliers.

Jose Mourinho and Real Madrid seem to have a lot of transfer plans this summer, and one of them includes bringing in a new Galactico midfield signing.
Los Blancos have failed to replace Toni Kroos and Luka Modric adequately for a couple of seasons now, and the existing midfield options have been decent without being spectacular.
However, Real Madrid know that any serious move for a top midfielder this summer will require a major sale first.
According to Jose Felix Diaz of AS, Real Madrid are aware that signing a midfielder of the level they want would cost more than €100 million.
For that kind of operation to happen, a departure would be necessary. The names mentioned as possible sale options are Aurelien Tchouameni, Eduardo Camavinga and Fede Valverde.

Australia said Monday its football team will play two games against powerhouse Brazil for their first home fixtures after the World Cup.
The Socceroos will face Carlo Ancelotti's decorated side in Townsville on September 25 and in Brisbane four days later.
"Brazil are a world-class football nation, and we look forward to facing them in Australia," said Socceroos coach Tony Popovic.
"While my immediate focus remains firmly on our World Cup campaign, I'm delighted that we are locking in fixtures of this calibre, because we want to consistently test ourselves against top-tier opposition moving forward."
The two teams have met 11 times since their first encounter in 1988, with Australia winning just once while banking two draws.

Yankees' Gerrit Cole ERA At Fenway Jumps To 7 After Red Sox Beat Down originally appeared on NESN. Add NESN as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
New York Yankees starting pitcher Gerrit Cole's perfect game bid lasted all of two pitches on Saturday afternoon before Boston Red Sox leadoff hitter Masataka Yoshida deposited a lazy 93-mile-an-hour fastball down the middle into Boston's bullpen.
Yoshida is no slugger. It was only the 5-foot-8 ***** anese native's second home run of the season, and sixth since 2024. But hey, that's Gerrit Cole at Fenway Park for you.
The next inning, he gave Triple-A call-up Anthony Seigler his first career home run. The inning after that, the entire Red Sox lineup ate with back-to-back singles from Yoshida and Ceddanne Rafaela coming to roost after Willson Contereas doubled to the deepest part of the ballpark.
It was another loss for Cole at Fenway, which has hilariously become his Yankees' legacy.
