Another Husker earned a spot on an award watchlist on Tuesday, the team's fourth player. Defensive back Donovan Jones earned the honor, being named to the 2026 Allstate Wuerffel Trophy Watch List.
The award honors FBS players who lead through community service while excelling in the classroom and on the field. Jones enters his redshirt sophomore year after playing in all 13 games last season, starting in 11. He recorded six or more tackles in five games last season. The Omaha native totaled 59 tackles, including 1.5 tackles for loss, and tied for the team lead with five pass breakups.
Jones' 59 tackles made him the fifth Husker freshman to record at least 50 tackles since the NCAA restored freshman eligibility in 1972. He also helped Nebraska rank third nationally in pass defense in 2025.
Jones is also highly active in the Nebraska community, volunteering at food banks, kitchens, public schools and various centers. For his contributions to the community, he received the Sam Foltz 27 Hero Leadership Award earlier this year. Jones is the fourth Husker to be named to a watchlist, joining Jacory Barney (Paul Hornung Award), Justin Evans (Rimington Trophy) and Anthony Colandrea (Maxwell Award).
In September, 11 student-athletes from the Watch List will be named to the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team and become semifinalists for the Allstate Wuerffel Trophy. The winner will be announced live on The Home Depot College Football Awards show in December and also serve as captain of the 2026 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team.

Texas edge rusher Colin Simmons is among those to land on this year's Allstate Wuerffel Trophy watch list.
Each season, the award honors the sport's most impactful community leaders.
Former Texas safety Michael Taaffe won the Wuerffel Trophy last season for his work with Texas Against Fentanyl; among Longhorns to receive the annual honor before him, Sam Acho won the award back in 2010.

Rain and wind sent the University of Cincinnati Bearcats football training camp indoors for the first time on Tuesday, Aug. 11.
It's something that wouldn't have been possible had the troops been at Camp Higher Ground, their previous preseason location for 27 years. Under the lights in the morning, the Bearcats put some spirited work in with some big plays and a few scuffles.
UC Bearcats coaches Scott Satterfield Scott Satterfield, Luke Fickell on coaching hot seat, report says
Also during the practice, the Bearcats found out that starting left guard Evan Tengesdahl made the Wuerffel Award watch list. The Wuerffel Trophy is presented annually to the FBS player who best combines exemplary community service with leadership achievement on and off the field.
This is in addition to Tengesdahl's appearance on the Bruce Feldman Freak List published by the New York Times. UC has recently had several players listed, including defensive lineman Dontay Corleone, linebacker Jake Golday and receiver Jeff Caldwell.

Good news: the UNC football program is starting fresh. With an abysmal 2025 in the rearview mirror, North Carolina is ready to charge forward and return to its winning ways.
The Tar Heels will start a new quarterback for the third straight season, with 2026's competition likely coming down to Wisconsin transfer Billy Edwards and Texas A&M transfer Miles O'Neill. Whoever wins the job, he'll be throwing primarily to Jordan Shipp, who quickly rose to become UNC's top pass-catcher.
Ready to take on an even larger leadership role this fall, Shipp gained some well-deserved preseason recognition on Tuesday, earning himself a spot on the Allstate Wuerffel Trophy Watch List.
According to its official website, this trophy honors college football players who lead through community service, while excelling in the classroom and on the field.
Shipp earned All-ACC Honorable Mention in 2025, leading North Carolina with 60 receptions, 671 yards and six touchdowns. Shipp caught a game-high two touchdowns during the Tar Heels' 41-6 blowout of Richmond, while his best yardage output came with 90 yards at NC State.

KENT — Kent State redshirt sophomore receiver Wayne Harris is one of 113 nominees nationwide on the watch list for the 2026 Wuerffel Trophy, college football's top community service award.
The Wuerffel Trophy honors players who lead through community service while excelling in the classroom and on the field. It is named after former Florida quarterback Danny Wuerffel, the 1996 Heisman Trophy winner.
Harris' service activities include food security through canned food drives and food recovery efforts, youth mentorship through Tru2U and Bulldog Boys and education through reading programs, the I Promise School and elementary school engagement. He saw action in all 12 games in 2025, caught a season-long 42-yard touchdown pass against Ball State and had a 59-yard punt return for a TD against Central Michigan.
The Wuerffel Trophy finalists will be chosen by the trophy's selection committee with input from a fan vote. The winner will be announced on Dec. 11.
Hariis is one of seven Kent State football players on this this year's Pro Football Network preseason All-Mid-American Conference team. He earned first team honors as a punter returner.

The first thing you need to know about the Allstate Wuerffel Trophy watchlist is that you want players in your program who qualify for the honor. Even better when they are also your best, star players. The Wuerffel Trophy is given annually to the college football player who 'best combines exemplary community service with athletic and academic achievement.' On Tuesday, it was revealed that Michigan State football star linebacker Jordan Hall has made the prestigious Allstate Wuerffel Trophy watchlist for the 2026 season.
Last year, the Wuerffel Trophy was won by Michael Taafee of Texas. Some other notable past winners are Tim Tebow (2008), Matt Barkley (2012), and Ladd McConkey (2023). Michigan State has never had a Wuerffel Trophy winner, but recent Spartans to make the watchlist include running back Nate Carter and offensive tackle Cole Chewins.

Carolina signed former Florida quarterback Kyle Trask on Sunday after a hamstring injury is expected to sideline rookie Haynes King for an extended period of time. The ex-Gator joins Bryce Young and Kenny Pickett as the Panthers' top options under center entering Week 2 of the preseason.
The 2020 NCAA passing touchdowns leader spent 2025 on the Atlanta Falcons practice squad after being released by Tampa Bay in August of last year. The Buccaneers made Trask the 64th overall selection in the 2021 NFL Draft after his record-breaking senior campaign in Gainesville helped the Gators reach the SEC championship game.
While at UF, Trask went from unheralded backup to Heisman finalist in a season that saw him toss 43 touchdowns, breaking the program's single-season mark set by Danny Wuerffel in 1996.
The 6-foot-4-inch, 236-pound Manvel, Texas, native has failed to translate his magical 2020 performance into opportunities at the next level. As a professional, Trask has appeared in just seven regular-season games and completed 4-of-11 passes for 28 yards. The fact that Trask continues to command attention despite last taking a snap in December 2024 speaks to how much teams value his size, arm talent, and upside.
After an underwhelming three seasons, Trask will look to revive his career and prove that he can be a serviceable NFL backup. King is considered week-to-week and sustained the injury in Carolina's preseason win over Arizona.

It was a breakthrough national championship, highlighted by the Fun' N' Gun offense, a Heisman-winning quarterback and a visor-wearing coach with swagger that stretched from Key West to Pensacola.
Florida football won its first national ****** le 30 years ago, capping a 12-1 season in 1996 with a 52-20 win over rival Florida State in the Sugar Bowl.
Two of the three statues erected in front of The Swamp played a key role in the championship season. Heisman winner Steve Spurrier, in his sixth season as UF coach, guided a UF offense that lit up scoreboards like a pinball machine. With Spurrier calling the plays, the Florida Gators led the nation in total offense (503.9 ypg) while leading the SEC in scoring offense (47.0 ppg, an SEC record that still stands).
Starting quarterback Danny Wuerffel won the Heisman Trophy in the 1996 season, passing for 3,625 yards and 39 TDs.
Defensively, Florida transformed into a more aggressive, blitzing unit under first-year coordinator Bob Stoops. UF wound up ranking third in the conference in total defense (250.2 yards per game allowed) and third in turnovers forced (2.2 per game).

Nick Dawkins was a three-star recruit when he joined Penn State’s 2020 recruiting class. He did not crack the starting lineup until 2024, but his impact was immediately felt on the offensive line. Dawkins earned All-Big Ten honorable mention in 2024 and won the Wuerffel Trophy for his leadership off the field. He was again named a team captain in 2025 and remained a key piece on the offensive line.
Dawkins did not hear his name called in the 2026 NFL Draft, but he signed on with the Baltimore Ravens as an undrafted free agent. He will join former teammate Vega Ioane in Baltimore and compete for a spot on the Ravens’ 53-man roster in the fall.
Only 53 more days until Penn State’s season opener against Marshall!
