With the heat index at 110 degrees before kickoff at Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium and the temperature on the artificial turf at Campbell-Williams Field reaching 160 degrees, the Ohio State Buckeyes were the only team on the field for pregame warmups.
Seeking an edge in a game with a betting line set at 1.5 points during the week, the Texas Longhorns were across the street in the school's brand-new, $80-million dollar Frank & Wofford Denius Football Training Complex.
"Figured they could go out in the heat," Texas senior quarterback Arch Manning said.
The decision was made by director of football sports medicine Donald Nguyen.

SAN MARCOS - As UTSA quarterback Owen McCown was preparing for his final season, he felt a lingering weight on his shoulders.
He carried the burden of two straight losses to rival Texas State, of slow starts and road woes and missed opportunities in close losses. No matter what drills or exercises the Roadrunners devised, he knew he couldn't replicate those moments. He dove into the mental aspect as much as he could, searching for answers that might pay off when the situation finally arrived.
With UTSA trailing in the final two minutes against Texas State in a pivotal early season showdown Saturday in San Marcos, McCown delivered. The Roadrunners orchestrated a drive that ended in a 25-yard touchdown run by Brandon High with 14 seconds remaining, providing the final blow in a 30-26 win over the Bobcats.
"Obviously that's something we've been working on, and it showed today," McCown said. "To go out my last year against a rival here, a road win on a two-minute drill, it's big time. It says a lot about our team."

Notre Dame released a statement backing the coach and explaining that the Freeman family was "verbally accosted" during the wrestling match.
"Vinny Freeman, head coach Marcus Freeman's son, was verbally accosted during and after his wrestling match by a local wrestling coach," Notre Dame's January statement detailed, per South Bend Tribune. "Marcus and Joanna Freeman intervened and removed Vinny from the situation.

The ending of the Michigan football and Western Michigan game was controversial. While it was exciting for fans of the maize and blue, with the walk-off Hail Mary, there was an argument to be made that the Wolverines should not have been given a final play, with one second added back to the game clock.

The Detroit Tigers have another injury concern involving one of the organization's best young hitters.
Top prospect Josue Briceño has been placed on Triple-A Toledo's seven-day injured list after leaving an Aug. 29 game following an awkward play at second base.
Briceño considered advancing from second on a fly ball before scrambling back toward the bag. After being tagged out following a partial slide, the 21-year-old immediately grabbed at his right foot before eventually getting back to his feet. He was removed from the game the following inning. MLB's latest prospect injury report still lists the specific injury as TBA. MLB's latest update on Briceño's injury
That means it would be premature to label this an ankle sprain, or anything else, until Detroit provides a formal diagnosis.

CHAPEL HILL — UNC football general manager Michael Lombardi has resigned, the university announced Aug. 3.
"The University will continue its ongoing investigation and will consider all appropriate corrective actions responsive to the information it learns," UNC released in a school-issued statement.
On Friday, July 31, lawyer Tom Mars released a statement in response to the Lombardi situation.
"Michael hasn't been told anything about the nature of UNC's investigation and welcomes the opportunity to clear his name, which has already been sullied by baseless statements and innuendo on social media," Mars wrote.
"He is fully cooperating with UNC and expects the investigation will be swift, thorough, and fair. Michael would ask that people have the decency to let the process run its course before jumping to any conclusions about the nature of the investigation or whether there's any merit to whatever has been alleged."

The Baltimore Ravens announced the signing of offensive tackle A.J. Arcuri and tight end Nick Vannett to their practice squad on Tuesday.
Arcuri and Vannett completed the team's initial practice squad. However, veteran offensive lineman Chuma Edoga is expected to join the group after a successful workout on Wednesday, per ESPN's Jeremy Fowler. The Ravens will have to clear a spot on Thursday to formalize the move, either by releasing a player or placing on on injured reserve.
Vannett, 33, has played for nine teams in his career, including a 18-month stint with the Saints in 2021 and 2022 while now-Ravens offensive coordinator Declan Doyle was serving as an offensive ****** istant on Sean Payton's staff. Griffis has plenty of experience under his belt with stops Wake Forest and Texas Tech, and at one point decided to give up on football. Now, he'll have one final fling this season.
Griffis said the journey has been a long one to get here, but that he's getting more comfortable by the day, especially since his first days on campus.
"Being out there and just getting reps of different guys who are new to the system," Griffis said. "I definitely think as a unit we've grown a ton, so the summer in camp was big for us."

The total package consisted of €14 million of a base transfer fee, plus €5 million in potential bonuses for Bayern Munich as had been reported earlier this week:

The Dodgers, who are the biggest threat to Milwaukee for the NL's best record at 80-51 entering Monday, are understandably the favorite to return to the World Series, as L.A. has won each of the last two years and they've only gotten better, at least on paper. The Brewers have had some success against the Dodgers in the regular season this year, though, winning four of seven, including three of four in Los Angeles in August.

Manchester City continues to search for midfielders that they can sign to bolster Enzo Maresca's squad. Crystal Palace's England international Adam Wharton was named as a potential target for the FA Cup and Carabao Cup holders. Wharton's passing game and quality in possession seem suited to life in a City side. It has now been reported that Manchester City have enquired about the possibility of signing Adam Wharton. However, Crystal Palace appear to have quickly squashed City's hopes of signing Wharton.
David Ornstein and Sam Lee have reported for The Athletic that Manchester City have enquired with Crystal Palace about the potential of signing Adam Wharton this summer. However, Crystal Palace have informed City that they have no intention of selling Wharton this summer. It is also reported that Wharton is one of many candidates City have on their recruitment list. However, the name of those players isn't revealed.
Manchester City are now in a race against time to bolster their squad ahead of the transfer window closing. My personal belief is that City wouldn't be willing to let so many players depart without having a plan in place. That plan is yet to properly reveal itself. However, due to the stage of the transfer window where City are trying to do major work, they may face frustration or be forced to pay a premium.
Crystal Palace's stance on not wanting to sell Adam Wharton is understandable. They will not want to lose such an important player so late in the transfer window. Unless Wharton attempts to engineer an exit from Crystal Palace late in the window, which looks unlikely, City will have to look elsewhere to bolster their midfield. This is a scenario that could be in play for a host of clubs who will not want to lose key players without having the time to sign a replacement. The other possibility is that Manchester City will have to pay a premium to sign players so late in the window which is now a likely scenario which will take place.

USC football has a 2026 schedule which will give the coaching staff a chance to give a lot of players some meaningful reps in September. The staff will likely need to rotate a lot of players in and out of the lineup, and it shouldn't be a point of considerable debate, either.
This is not a complicated conversation, or at least, it doesn't have to be. USC starts its season with San Jose State, Fresno State, Louisiana, and Rutgers. That's four games the Trojans should win with absolutely zero problems whatsoever. Rutgers is a Big Ten game, and it's on the road, so that game has to be taken seriously in a way the first three aren't, but still, it's a game USC should win handily.
The Rutgers game is on September 19 in New Jersey. After the San Jose-Fresno-Louisiana set of nonconference games, Rutgers should serve as the dress rehearsal for the big one, the game against Oregon in Los Angeles on September 26.
USC football essentially has three games in which to rotate players heavily and arrive at decisions on who should play where, and how much. Phrased differently, USC's depth chart for Game 1 is a lot less important than the depth chart going into Game 4 game against Rutgers. How USC's roster looks and feels going into the Rutgers game should offer the likely template for what we are going to see against Oregon in Game 5, the matchup which might define and shape the whole season.

Fall practice started this week throughout Oregon for high school students and the first contests come next week.
Teams are preparing for the season in volleyball, football, soccer and cross country.
The first day for contests is Thursday, Aug. 27, except for football, which can have jamborees that day, but no full games until Aug. 28.
Marshfield will host its traditional volleyball jamboree, which includes several other area teams, on Aug. 27 and then heads to Cascade Christian for a tournament on Aug. 29.
North Bend and Coquille both are in Marshfield's jamboree and then face each other on Aug. 29 in North Bend. Coquille then hosts both Marshfield and Creswell on Sept. 3, with each team playing the other two.

The Buffalo Bills could be without their starting center on their offensive line for the rest of the preseason but hopefully not the longer.
During Buffalo's 29-14 preseason-opening win against the Carolina Panthers, Connor McGovern did not play. It was Lloyd Cushenberry taking the first-team reps and snapping the ball to quarterback Josh Allen.
McGovern sustained a lower-body injury during the Bills' first open practice on Aug. 9 and has yet to return to the field. It's unclear exactly what McGovern's injury is but we have a timetable thanks to him.
Despite not playing against the Panthers, McGovern appeared in Buffalo's locker room and declared he would be back from injury before the end of the preseason... or at least before the start of the regular season.
A "few weeks" will still be missed, though. Here's what McGovern told reporters via ESPN:

The Seahawks played their first home game on Saturday night since winning Super Bowl LX. Coach Mike Macdonald was impressed by the turnout from the fans.
He was not impressed by the performance of the team.
"We owe them a better performance, to say the least," Macdonald told reporters after the 17-7 loss to the Cowboys. "I just told the team, it's — we're gonna learn a lot from this game, whether, you know, take the result out of it. Obviously, it's disappointing to lose the game any time you run out at anything competitively, we're trying to win, but right now, our process needs to improve. That's really the biggest takeaway, is on really in both phases on offense and defense. Our operation is not up to par, and how we're finishing plays is not up to par.
"So that'll be a focus move forward, but it's good to know, you know, I'm glad we know now on the things we need to be able to do to take our team to the next level, and we have a great opportunity to go, go figure it out."

Former Phoenix Suns greats Amar'e Stoudemire and Mike D'Antoni delivered their Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame induction speeches on Aug. 15 in Springfield, Massachusetts.

The Texas Tech football team is in the middle of the preseason camp, but the roster may not necessarily be finalized.
Recent movement in the eligibility **** e, primarily focused on basketball right now, has opened the door for Class of 2022 recruits to have an additional year to play their respective sports. The Texas Tech men's basketball team has benefitted from this, adding Darrion Williams and Jamichael Stillwell recently, so there's an opportunity for Joey McGuire to add a piece or two to the football roster.
McGuire hasn't ruled out bringing in somebody else before the start of the season, though there are a number of factors to consider before doing so.
"I don't think there's necessarily a spot," McGuire said, "(James) Blanchard and I, not only just daily, we're talking throughout the day of what everybody's hearing. ..."

Recent movement in the eligibility **** e, primarily focused on basketball right now, has opened the door for Class of 2022 recruits to have an additional year to play their respective sports. The Texas Tech men's basketball team has benefitted from this, adding Darrion Williams and Jamichael Stillwell recently, so there's an opportunity for Joey McGuire to add a piece or two to the football roster.
McGuire hasn't ruled out bringing in somebody else before the start of the season, though there are a number of factors to consider before doing so.
"I don't think there's necessarily a spot," McGuire said, "(James) Blanchard and I, not only just daily, we're talking throughout the day of what everybody's hearing. ..."
