BATON ROUGE — Was there a loser in the Lane Kiffin decision saga?
Late last season, Ole Miss was in the midst of its best regular season in program history, ultimately going 11-1. The Rebels, thanks to Kiffin, his star quarterback Trinidad Chambliss and running back Kewan Lacy, were on their way to the College Football Playoff for the first time.
In the middle of that, Kiffin was conversing with LSU about its football head coaching job opening. Come season's end, Kiffin decided to take the LSU position. Despite wanting to stay on to coach the Rebels through the CFP, Ole Miss leadership would not allow him to do so.

You don't put up 60+ points in back-to-back games for the first time since 1915 without a total team effort. But even then some Bulldogs are bound to distinguish themselves. Those valiant warriors in Red and Black are your MVDs, the Most Valuable Dawgs from Georgia's 70-20 victory over Western Kentucky.
Offense: Gunner Stockton. There's no point in overthinking this one. Gunner finished 13 of 16 for 234 yards passing and 5 touchdowns in a shade under two quarters of work. That's downright surgical in its efficiency. If he can continue to carve up defenses that way in the SEC schedule, the Bulldog offense is heading for a big year.
Defense:Chris Cole. Like most of the Bulldog starters Cole took limited snaps, but while he was in he was all over the Hilltopper offense. Cole finished with 3 tackles, 2 of them solo stops, and got consistent pass rush pressure both inside and outside. It was a really solid, consistent effort for the physically gifted linebacker.
Special teams: AJ Kruah. Kruah also led the team in tackles, by the way, but his forced fumble on the game's opening play set the tone for the day. On a day when Kirby Smart specifically called out his second and third teamers for not being prepared to play, Kruah absolutely came ready to work.
Go 'Dawgs!!!

All good things must come to an end, and that was the case when Merced (Calif.) handed top-ranked Central-Phenix City flag football its first loss in nearly four years.
The Red Devils' 20-12 loss to the Bears on Friday, Sept. 11, ended their 62-game winning streak that dates back to November 2022 when they lost to Auburn High School in the state quarterfinals during their first official season.
"If we lose a game or two or three or whatever, the goal is to be challenged in the regular season," head coach Mitchell Holt told USA TODAY Sports ahead of the season. "So, then we get to the postseason, we know what we're made of."
After years of winning, Central finally had the chance to face off against some out-of-state competition. They were just one of just 18 teams selected to play in the inaugural MaxPreps Flag Football Showdown in San Diego from Sept. 11-12 alongside No. 2 JSerra Catholic, No. 3 Newport Harbor, No. 5 Orange Lutheran, No. 15 Sierra Canyon and No. 19 Huntington Beach.

STILLWATER — Last Saturday, Seth Storey walked into the Stillwater Raising Cane's and ordered a 25-finger tailgate platter. It costs $41.99 and feeds 6-8 people, but Storey wasn't sharing.
At 9:02 p.m., Storey sat down at a booth with an aluminum pan full of chicken and couldn't leave the restaurant for 24 hours. For every tender he ate, one hour came off his clock.
The first 30 minutes went OK as Storey powered through 12 tenders. At the 15 tender mark, his consumption started to slow down. He gagged attempting to swallow tender 18 and nearly threw up. The bathroom would ultimately call three times — once to throw up.
Even the tasty Raising Cane's sauce didn't make things better.
"It didn't help with the flavor and it just kind of tasted like nothing," Storey said. "Like definitely toward the end, I was just sick of the taste."

Broderick Jones has made a strong early impression since joining the Dallas Cowboys. There is still work to be done, particularly with some of Jones' techniques, but the Cowboys have been encouraged by how he has responded to coaching.
Offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer praised the tackle's athleticism and approach as he adjusts to the Cowboys' system.
Broderick Jones has gotten off to a positive start with the Cowboys. Schottenheimer said he has been pleased with the tackle's work ethic and his progress in learning the offense. The coaching staff has been encouraged by Jones' willingness to apply what he is being taught.

The first half of Fluminense vs. Vasco this Saturday (5) in the Brasileirão had more confusion than good football.
There were plenty of cards for heavier challenges, altercations involving people who weren't even on the pitch, and lots of complaints.
And one of the main figures was referee Davi de Oliveira Lacerda from Espírito Santo, who had an unusual moment with Canobbio.
Find out what happened below.
Vasco had total control of the action for much of the first half.

At the press conference ahead of the home match against Augsburg, Adi Hütter discusses team news, the opponents and new signing Lilian Brassier, among other things.
Eintracht entertain FC Augsburg at Deutsche Bank Park on Sunday evening in their first home game of the 2026/27 Bundesliga season. At the pre-match press conference, head coach Adi Hütter discussed…
… the current situation: "We're working every day in training on implementing what I see and how I want to play football. We showed that in phases against Union Berlin, but I also saw things there that I wasn't pleased with. We want to play proactive football with a lot of passion, which is also the football the fans in the stadium want to see. When that clicks, we'll have success."
… team news: "Nnamdi Collins and Ansgar Knauff are injured, but we're slowly getting to the point where everyone will be fit."
… FC Augsburg: "They made a great start to the season with the win at home to Schalke and will come here with confidence. They're a good side with exciting players, who we'll need to deal with. I expect us to show the fans that we're determined to win. It's possible that not everything will work right away."

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Earlier this offseason, it had appeared as if freshman Salesi Moa and Texas transfer Jaime Ffrench each had the inside edge to be Michigan football's No. 3 wide receiver. Then, early in fall camp, it had appeared as if freshman Travis Johnson was surging. However, on Monday night, head coach Kyle Whittingham surprised many by naming junior receiver Channing Goodwin as the third guy behind Andrew Marsh and JJ Buchanan.
Goodwin opened up the season last year as a starter opposite Semaj Morgan. But drops in his first four games relegated him to the bench in favor of then-freshman Andrew Marsh. However, with a new coaching staff having fresh eyes, mixed with Goodwin finding his groove in fall camp, he emerged as the next option behind the starting duo playing out wide.
"Channing, we didn't have him in the spring because he was out coming back from his surgery," Beck said. "So it was really great getting him back in this fall camp. And he's just really steady, knows what to do, very football intelligent, really dependable and consistent."
While Goodwin will be heavily featured, he won't be the only other receiver to see the field. The aforementioned trio -- Moa, Ffrench, Johnson -- will also play, along with Kendrick Bell and perhaps Jamar Browder or Jacob Washington.
Beck said that the 'starters' are the trio of Marsh, Buchanan, and Goodwin, but that doesn't mean they'll always be the first players on the field for the first offensive down of any given game.

Sep. 1—ABERDEEN — In a deep field of individual standouts and top teams, the Mitchell High School boys golf team finished tied for 12th on Tuesday at the Hub City Invitational at Lee Park Golf Course.
Mitchell shot 317 as a team, which was the Kernels' second-best team score of the season so far, but it still landed Mitchell well off the pace of the top teams.
Sioux Falls Lincoln and O'Gorman tied with 294 team strokes at the top, as Lincoln won the second tiebreaker because the Patriots' sixth golfer scored better than O'Gorman's. Both teams' fifth golfer shot 74, moving the tiebreaker down to the No. 6 slot on each varsity team.
The individual medalist honors went to Aberdeen Roncalli's Harper Schnabel, who shot 3-under-68 to win the tournament by two strokes. Schnabel had five birdies in the round, including shooting 2-under-par on the course's back nine. Sioux Falls Jefferson's Trevor Rick, Rapid City Stevens' Cole Jansen and Watertown's Max Stemwedel each shot 1-under-70 and Roncalli's Lucas Daggett shot even-par-71 to round out the top-five places.
Mitchell was led by senior Asher Dannenbring, who shot a 4-over-75 on the day, finishing in 25th place in a field of 98 golfers. Kernel freshman Eli Konrad shot a season-best round of 79, and checked in at 48th place. Ian Weber also lowered his season-best score and shot a round of 80, which landed him in 55th place.

The Los Angeles Chargers signed quarterback Justin Herbert's brother, Patrick, to the practice squad after he was waived by the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Justin, the face of the franchise and the signal caller for the next five years of Chargers football, has gone through a lot of personal changes, including recently getting engaged to pop star Maddison Beer.
His brother, Patrick, was a tight end on the Oregon Ducks with Justin during the 2019 season.
Since then, they have been on different trajectories: Justin went on to be a top pick, while Patrick has been fighting for a roster spot.

When two sides argue, the third is the one who benefits. And this time, nothing could be more true.
Franck Kessié has been pushing for weeks to return to Italy after his stint in Saudi Arabia with Al Ahli, and the two teams most interested seemed to be Roma and Juventus.
The Bianconeri, however, pulled out just this morning due to the difficult financial situation.
And for the same reason, Roma likely has to pull out as well. The Ivorian midfielder's demands are not easy to meet, even though he's a free agent.
Furthermore, according to Gianluca Di Marzio, Atalanta are very close to bringing the former AC Milan and Barcelona player back to the Nerazzurri. This time, however, Gian Piero Gasperini won't be there to welcome him.

The Detroit Tigers are set for their most-anticipated series of the regular season.
The Tigers (62-71) are facing the first-place Los Angeles Dodgers (80-54) on Friday, Aug. 28, at Comerica Park in Detroit (6:40 p.m. ET, DSN). This is the first game of a star-studded, three-game weekend series that should bring a packed house each day to the park.
First up for the Tigers is former lefty ace Tarik Skubal (8-7, 2.91 ERA), who is starting for the Dodgers on Friday night. The Tigers traded Skubal to the Dodgers on Aug. 1 in exchange for three prospects, with Skubal now set to pitch his first game at Comerica Park as a visitor.

More than a month after former Cowboys quarterback and CBS broadcaster Tony Romo was arrested for suspicion of operating while intoxicated in Milwaukee, the authorities have filed three new citations against him.
Via TMZ, the district attorney has charged Romo with first-offense operating while intoxicated, unsafe passing on the right side, and possessing open intoxicants in his vehicle.
Romo was placed on leave by CBS eight days after the arrest, which created multiple bodycam videos that created a general bad look for Romo. CBS has elevated J.J. Watt to replace Romo on the network's top broadcast team, and it seems to be a move that will cover the entire season.
Romo has four years left on his CBS contract, at a total payout of $72 million. CBS could try to terminate the deal for cause, owing him nothing. Romo would surely fight such a move. A settlement for something less than the full amount is always possible.

Where Unai Emery is concerned, the silent treatment has taken on a new meaning. The Aston Villa manager's pre-match interview at Brighton on Sunday was notable for a one-word answer. "Silence," he said, when asked about Ollie Watkins' whereabouts. The England striker was absent for the 4-0 defeat, Emery hinting he refused to play.
Watkins appears set on joining Al Hilal. A considerable boost to his bank balance would come with a dent to his reputation. For the nice guy, one of football's feel-good stories, it surely wasn't supposed to end like this. When Watkins was playing for Exeter at 21, the riches now offered in Saudi Arabia would have seemed unimaginable. But so, too, would have scoring the winner for England in the semi-final of a major tournament or winning a European trophy. This will be his last big contract – and presumably, much his biggest – but it again invites the question of how much money footballers need.
Ollie Watkins appears set to wave farewell to Aston Villa (Getty)
Six years at Villa Park should not have left him a pauper. Instead, he may leave Villa with Emi Buendia acting as a false nine at Brighton as they made a false start to their campaign.
A tarnished legacy would be a shame because Watkins and Villa have been very good for each other. He had never played in the top flight before he became their club record signing. He became the only player to reach double figures of Premier League goals in each of the last six seasons. His departure may be drawn out, but perhaps Watkins finished in a way with a match-winning brace against Manchester City, his last game at Villa Park, like his third, an evisceration of Liverpool. There were six goals in his last five games for Villa and, in the one where he did not find the net, they won the Europa League.

Arsenal made a good deal when they sold Folarin Balogun to AS Monaco in 2023, and they could be about to benefit from the agreement this summer.
The striker is one of the best players to come through their academy and has been performing well in France, which could lead to him leaving the club this summer. Several clubs have shown interest in signing him, with **** nal hoping he moves so they can benefit from the 17.5% sell-on clause included in the deal that took him to France.
The striker has been linked with a move to Tottenham, while the latest team to show interest in his signature is Barcelona, according to Fichajes.
The Catalans want a new striker after Robert Lewandowski left them as a free agent at the end of last season, and they see Balogun as a player who can replace him.
Balogun could be keen on the move as he wants a new challenge after spending the last three years on their books. The striker believes he needs a fresh challenge, and a move to Barcelona could provide him with the opportunity to continue his career at another major club.

There may be no bigger fan of Scottie Barnes than Darko Rajakovic. The Toronto Raptors head coach recently sat down for an interview in his native Serbia, during which he likened the franchise star to one of the all-time greats. "I think there is no coach and there is no success for a coach without players," the bench boss — about to enter his fourth season holding the clipboard in Toronto — began explaining in Serbian. "You look at all our greatest coaches, who are fantastic ... they all became great coaches by taking care of the players, and I think that's on every level ... there's no Phil Jackson without Michael Jordan. My Michael Jordan is Scottie Barnes."

NEW YORK (AP) — New York Liberty star Breanna Stewart has always seen the WNBA as an inclusive place that has served as a safe ******* e for both its fans and the players. That's been challenged lately.
The WNBA has been the subject of recent debates on whether transgender women — people ******* igned male at birth who transition to align with their gender identity — should be allowed to participate in the league. There has never been such a player in the WNBA. Although the league's collective bargaining agreement says the WNBA is restricted to women, it contains no more specific language about gender identity or ******* ******* igned at birth.
There have been small rallies and protests outside Indiana Fever games after the issue came to a head when Sophie Cunningham of the Fever said in an ESPN profile published last month that she was opposed to transgender girls and women competing in girls' and women's sports. There are rallies planned before the Liberty face the Fever on Saturday night in Brooklyn.
"Knowing that rallies are happening on both sides shows the platform that the W has and the stunts for attention are just continuing to try and ride the wave that we have," Stewart told a small group of reporters Saturday morning. "I want Liberty fans and even Indy fans that are going to come here tonight to be able to have this arena be a safe ******* e."
At least three fans were asked by WNBA security personnel to cover shirts that had messages about transgender women participating in women's sports during last Sunday's game at Atlanta between the Dream and the Fever. The league later said the fans should have been free to wear those shirts.

Jaxon Kohler has a new lease on college life, and now he has a new college team, too.
Kohler, a former Michigan State big man who gained an extra year of eligibility through a Colorado federal court ruling last month, is transferring to BYU, his agent told Rivals on Thursday night. Kohler is from American Fork, Utah.
Kohler, 23, played four seasons for Michigan State, and last year, he averaged 12.5 points and 8.9 rebounds while shooting 38.9% from 3 and 50% from the floor in helping lead the Spartans to the Sweet 16.
His college career seemed to be over when he played for his hometown Utah Jazz in the NBA's Summer League, before the court order came down that granted the entire 2022 recruiting class a fifth year of eligibility.
That same court order led to Oakland point guard Brody Robinson transferring to Creighton, despite Oakland leaving a roster spot open should the courts allowed him an extra season. Robinson was among several college athletes who sued for an extra year of eligibility.

The season opener is a much different battle than most games, and for Notre Dame that won't be any different in 2026.
The Irish will open their slate on the road at historic Lambeau Field facing the Wisconsin Badgers, a contest that will be huge for both teams. Notre Dame wants to start its season off on the right foot, and for Badger head coach Luke Fickell, a win over a top-5 team will quell the chatter of him being on the hot season.
However, this game could be shaping up to be a huge Irish win, as a report from Wisconsin's fall camp from Kate Fox mentioned on social media "at least five turnovers" for the offense this week. It's a tough task to face Notre Dame's defense, and it will be even harder if the Badgers are giving the ball away.
The Irish had the No. 4 ranked turnover margin last fall, with over a takeaway-per-game, while the Badgers had one of the worst, at No. 123 nationally giving the ball away almost once a contest according to NCAA.com. There's a significant talent gap between the two, and it's very troubling for Wisconsin if this is happening in the fall.
Local media has high hopes for a Badger upset, but this report should put some, or a lot, of doubt into those thoughts. Notre Dame and Wisconsin open up their season on Sunday, Sept. 6th in primetime.

As the Kyle Whittingham era approaches for Michigan Football, what are the expectations for Year 1 for the new regime? Whittingham has amassed a successful coaching career already and has a talented roster at his disposal, but can he bring the Wolverines back to national prominence right away? Is an 8-4 season going to satisfy this ravenous fanbase?
Here are three things that would define a successful first year for Whittingham and company in Ann Arbor.
Michigan has yet to make the 12-team CFP field in the first two years of the format. Whittingham also never reached that stage at Utah, and it may very well be unrealistic to set the bar that high.
However, Whittingham also never had the resources now at his disposal at Michigan. And even in a loaded Big Ten, you can be far from perfect and still play meaningful football late in the year. Michigan's biggest tests on the schedule are Oklahoma, Indiana, at Oregon and at Ohio State. To reach the CFP, winning at least one of those is a necessity.
Regardless of how each game goes, Whittingham taking the Wolverines back to the CFP in his first season here would help re-establish them among the sport's elite.

Red Sox Prospect Wears No. 34 and Has Other Similarities With David Ortiz originally appeared on NESN. Add NESN as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The Boston Red Sox have had the pleasure of watching some of the greatest players in Major League Baseball history put on their jersey.
At the top of that list is David Ortiz, the now 50-year-old former first baseman and designated hitter who is a Hall of Famer, three-time World Series champion, and 10-time All-Star.
All Ortiz did throughout his career was swing the bat at a ridiculously high level, finishing with 541 home runs and driving in 1,768 RBIs.
Anyone comparing a player to Ortiz is probably being a bit outrageous.

The Chicago Bears had the most dominant victory of any team across the first week of the preseason with their 34-10 win over the Cleveland Browns.
Chicago started out slow in the first quarter, trailing 10-0, and partway through the second quarter including allowing quarterback Deshaun Watson to lead the Browns on a 10-play, 81-yard drive that took over six minutes off the clock. However, that was the last time Cleveland would score as Chicago's defense stiffened and the Bears offense got things going, scoring 34 unanswered points en route to a dominating win.
Here is a look at the good, bad and ugly from the Bears' preseason opening victory against the Browns:
Depth performances: Chicago has a lot of talented depth pieces on both sides of the ball that have a real chance of making an impact on the Bears this season. Rookie cornerback Malik Muhammad, who has been having a really good training camp, showed his physicality throughout the game. Wide receiver Kaden Davis had 88 receiving yards, which was the most of anyone in this game. Multiple players on the defensive line had a strong performance including Jamree Kromah and James Lynch. There has been concern that the Bears do not have enough depth on defense, but this game seemed to prove that Chicago has a lot more untapped talent than originally thought.
Case Keenum shines in third quarter: Keenum may be the third-string quarterback, but it is still important to see how he operates in the offense in the event Chicago ever needs him. He finished the day with a perfect quarterback rating, 90 percent completion percentage and two touchdowns. The veteran quarterback was in rhythm the entire time he was in the game and showed that if he ever needed to, he would have no problem operating this offense.

This was a pre-season finale to forget for Manchester United.
Just a week away from their Premier League opener at promoted Hull City on Saturday, Michael Carrick's men took the lead twice against AC Milan before finishing on the wrong end of a 4-2 beating.
First, the positives.
Marcus Rashford, Kobbie Mainoo and Lisandro Martinez all made their first appearances of pre-season. Skipper Bruno Fernandes and Youri Tielemans played for the full 90 minutes.
From the looks of it, there are no fresh injury concerns for Michael Carrick at the end of a six-match pre-season that has been largely positive, albeit with a foot issue for Mason Mount in Gothenburg seven days ago that was initially shrugged off as a precaution but has now kept the in-form midfielder out for almost three full games.
