When the Rams announced that guard Justin Dedich would open training camp on the non-football injury list, they did not reveal the nature of that injury. Today they explained it.
Rams head coach Sean McVay said Justin Dedich "had a hand accident around the Fourth of July, and so that's kind of what's keeping him out for now."
McVay didn't specifically mention fireworks, but that's the obvious conclusion people will draw from a July 4 hand accident.
During Fourth of July weekend in 2015, two different NFL players lost fingers in fireworks accidents. Giants defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul's injury caused him to miss half that season, although he had a long career after that, including being a Pro Bowler and Super Bowl champion in Tampa Bay in 2020. Buccaneers cornerback C.J. Wilson also suffered a serious hand injury at Fourth of July 2015 and never played again.
There's been no word on the severity of Dedich's injury.

Their careers have gone very different directions, with Pickens playing 2026 on the franchise tag and Mims coming off a two-year stint in the UFL. Mims was a second-round pick by the Jets in 2020, part of a loaded WR class that included CeeDee Lamb, Justin Jefferson, Brandon Aiyuk, Jerry Jeudy, and several others who've found steady, contributing roles in the NFL. But on top of entering the league during COVID, which that entire class had to overcome, Mims also missed most of his rookie training camp to injury. He didn't play until Week 7, but still had what ended up being his most productive season with 23 catches for 357 yards in nine games.
In Mims' second season, the Jets went from offensive-minded head coach Adam Gase to Robert Saleh, who brought in Matt LaFleur as a new offensive coordinator. This regime change, plus his own issues, hurt Mims' development and footing with the team. He went from eight starts as a rookie to just three in 2021. Mims requested a trade ahead of the 2022 seasons but was denied, and again was limited to a minor role in the WR rotation.
The Jets did finally trade him away in the 2023 offseason to the Lions, but he was waived/injured by Detroit midway through the preseason. He spent about two months on the Steelers' practice squad but didn't make it to their training camp the following year. The Jaguars gave him a look during their camp in 2024, but released him before final cuts.

A beloved player amongst the Detroit Tigers players, coaches and fanbase had to make way for another on Tuesday, July 28.
The Tigers reinstated shortstop/center fielder Javier Báez from the 60-day injured list ahead of Tuesday's game against the Baltimore Orioles. Detroit had to clear a roster spot on both the 26-man and 40-man roster since Báez was removed when he was placed on the 60-day list in June.
On Monday night following an 8-5 loss to the Orioles, manager A.J. Hinch and president of baseball operations Scott Harris sat down with backup catcher Jake Rogers and let him know he would be designated for ***** ignment.
Rogers, 31, has been a member of the Tigers' organization since he came over in the trade package for Justin Verlander from the Houston Astros in 2017. He made his major league debut with Detroit in 2019 and proceeded to appear in 362 games across six different seasons.
"Jake has been here as long as I have been here," Hinch said. "Scott, Jake and I met last night and did everything to walk down memory lane to just explain the timing and how decisions get made."

Wayfarer Studios, which Baldoni cofounded with investor Steve Sarowitz, has been ordered to pay the legal fees that The New York Times incurred in fighting a 2024 defamation lawsuit from the "It Ends with Us" studio.
In a July 27 order from New York Supreme Court Justice Gerald Lebovits, which was reviewed by USA TODAY, The New York Times Co. was determined to be entitled to $171,616.20 in damages. The company was seeking $181,622.70 in fees billed by outside counsel and its in-house legal team, but Lebovits did not agree that some fees were warranted.
The Times had sought attorney fees under New York's anti-Strategic Lawsuits Against Public Participation law after the claims against the newspaper in Wayfarer's federal lawsuit were dismissed in June 2025.

Well this is a peculiar first move for trade deadline season. Jake Rogers, the longest tenured Detroit Tigers player, has been designated for ***** ignment. Eduardo Valencia was recalled on Sunday and will be taking over the backup catcher duties. Rogers' roster spot will go to Javier Báez, who returns from a three-month absence after suffering a high ankle sprain at the end of April.
The 31-year-old Rogers made his major league debut with the Tigers back on July 30, 2019 after coming to the Tigers in the trade that sent Justin Verlander to the Houston Astros in August of 2017. He finally became the Tigers primary catcher in 2021 before tearing his UCL and requiring reconstruction surgery that cost him all of the 2022 season. In 2023 and 2024 Rogers put together good seasons based around his defensive ability, plate discipline, and the occasional burst of home run power. He was worth 4.7 fWAR across those two years, but since that point his offensive contributions collapsed as Dillon Dingler took over the everyday catching role. This season, Rogers' defense finally showed real signs of cracking as well. He's hitting .161/.266/.301 for a 60 wRC+ which ranks him 48th out of 59 catchers with 100 plate appearances or more this season.
Despite his struggles, two part-time White Sox catchers, and numerous others, are even worse offensive players than Rogers. It won't be a surprise if he gets claimed, but it's too bad no one would flip a lottery ticket prospect to acquire him. The problem is that Rogers defensive numbers have declined this year and he's finally grading out a little below average as a defender. Whether that's partly the result of lack of playing time is hard to say, but hopefully he'll be claimed somewhere. If he clears waivers and is outrighted the Tigers will still be on the hook for the rest of his $3.05M salary for 2026.
Valencia is far and away a better hitter than Rogers, so that should provide a little support to the offense. On the other hand, Valencia isn't that good behind the plate, particularly in terms of holding opponents' running game in check. Still with Rogers defensive numbers in decline, perhaps Valencia won't do worse.
Getting Báez back could be pretty helpful to the Tigers although it's just funny to look at Báez as a way to trim strikeouts in the lineup by taking over some of the workload from James Outman. It will be interesting to see how he's deployed. With Kerry Carpenter out with a foot injury, the outfield needs help. It needed help anyway. We'll see if Báez is back to full speed and can get back to playing a solid enough center field. If he's back to 100 percent, that also gives the Tigers options, with Báez getting some time at shortstop and around the infield to get another right-handed bat into the lineup. Either way, it's good to have Javy Báez back, and hopefully further support for the outfield isn't too far away as Max Clark will be available to be called up without spoiling his 2027 rookie eligibi

Brooks Koepka has withdrawn from the 2026 Rocket Classic. No reason was given for the WD.
Koepka, who tied for 28th at the Open Championship, is 84th in the FexEx Cup standings, so if he wants to make the postseason, he'll need a strong finish at next week's Wyndham Championship.
This season, his best finish was a T-9 at his hometown Cognizant Classic in the Palm Beaches. He also placed T-12 at the Masters.
His WD isn't such bad news for three other players, however. Because Koepka was listed in the field Monday, Lanto Griffin and Justin Lower were given spots to round out groupings, AKA the Koepka rule. In every PGA Tour event he has played this year, two players were added to the field on Monday, so he wasn't taking away starts from anyone. And then with his WD, Ben Silverman gets his spot at Detroit Golf Club in Michigan.
Perhaps waiting until Tuesday to withdraw was planned, but it's an unfortunate situation for Koepka, who has only one more chance to make the postseason.

Many expected the Dodgers to be facing the Mariners in the World Series last season, but Seattle couldn't close the deal against the Blue Jays. Now, a year later, they're an inferior team, but one still fighting to enter the postseason. The M's will go with the veteran Luis Castillo for the opening game of this series; potentially good news for a Dodgers offense that scored more than four runs only once in its last five games, making the pitching do the heavy lifting in the road trip's last stop at Citi Field.
A symbol of stability for this young Mariners staff ever since his acquisition back at the deadline in 2022, Castillo has a 3-9 record this season, which is a direct indicator of career-low numbers almost across the board. Lately, though, Castillo has had problems keeping the ball in the yard, allowing five home runs in his last two outings, the losing pitcher of record in each of his three outings this month. Although that 4.85 ERA this season justifies a lousy record, it is also a byproduct of the Mariners' complete inability to provide him any run support, scoring just 19 runs in his last eight starts.
Back to the home runs and how they might come into play, the one Dodger to actually leave the yard against the Mets, Kyle Tucker, is also one of the two who has gone deep against Castillo before. The two home runs in Citi Field were encouraging, but even in this recent stretch, Tucker needs to show more to come close to the player the Dodgers thought they were getting. Hitting at home hasn't been an enjoyable task for Tucker with a .607 OPS at Dodger Stadium.
One player who has definitely enjoyed performing at Dodger Stadium, though, is Justin Wrobleski. The Dodgers' starter has managed to keep an ERA below 3.00 both at home and on the road, but his .461 OPS allowed in seven starts at home genuinely sounds made up. Monitoring how he does with an increased workload in the second half is a priority for the Dodgers.

The Los Angeles Chargers quarterback and Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter Madison Beer jointly announced their engagement in an Instagram post Tuesday. It was accompanied by a photo of Herbert on bended knee holding a ring box in front of a smiling Beer, who was crouched with her right hand on his left knee. The caption read, "Meet my fiancé."
The congratulatory responses included ones from the NFL and the Chargers, as well as singer Gracie Abrams.
The couple was first spotted together last August. Beer attended some Chargers games last season, and she and Herbert kissed on the sidelines at one game. They've also turned up at Los Angeles Dodgers and Lakers games.

The Philadelphia Eagles are backing up the Brinks truck for defensive tackle Jalen Carter with a historic contract extension.

Justin Greaves etched his name into Test cricket history with a sensational spell against Pakistan, becoming the first bowler in recorded Test history to deliver five consecutive wicket-maidens during the opening Test in Tarouba, Trinidad.

The West Indies all-rounder produced a devastating burst on Day 3 at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy, turning the match on its head after Pakistan appeared well placed in their first innings. Greaves finished with career-best figures of 5/27 from 11 overs, with all five wickets coming in five successive maiden overs without conceding a single run. It was also the 31-year-old's maiden five-wicket haul in Test cricket.

Pakistan resumed the day trailing West Indies' first-innings total of 311 and looked to be building a strong reply through Shan Masood and Salman Agha. The pair safely negotiated the opening hour before Shamar Joseph broke the stand by bowling Agha.

What followed was one of the most remarkable spells in recent Test history.

Greaves dismissed centurion Shan Masood for 109 when the Pakistan batter chopped the ball back onto his stumps. He then removed Aamer Jamal with a delivery that jagged back sharply before trapping Ali Usman leg-before for a duck in the very next over.

Pakistan's hopes rested on Mohammad Rizwan, but Greaves forced the wicketkeeper-batter into flashing at a wide delivery, resulting in an edge behind. In the first over after lunch, he completed his five-wicket haul when Mohammad Abbas poked outside off stump and was caught behind.

The astonishing burst triggered a dramatic collapse, with Pakistan losing five wickets for just 15 runs before eventually being bowled out for 282, handing West Indies a first-innings lead of 29.

Greaves' feat surpassed the previous record of four consecutive wicket-maidens, achieved by former England fast bowler Stuart Broad against South Africa in Johannesburg in January 2016.

The spell not only marked Greaves' maiden Test five-for but also ensured his name entered the record books with an achievement never before seen in available Test records.

The 2026 Shriners Children's East-West Bowl released its watch list on Thursday. The list contains six returning Huskers and five Nebraska transfers.
Returning Huskers to make the list included wide receiver Nyziah Hunter, tight end Luke Lindenmeyer, edge rusher Williams Nwaneri, defensive back Andrew Marshall, and offensive linemen Justin Evans and Elijah Pritchett. Transfers include quarterback Anthony Colandrea, edge rusher Anthony Jones Jr., defensive back Dwayne McDougle III and offensive linemen Brendan Black and Paul Mubenga.
Colandrea is the standout, playing in 33 games in his career with 31 starts at quarterback. The 2025 Mountain West Offensive Player of the Year across three seasons completed 627-of-983 passes for 7,542 yards and 49 touchdowns. He also had 328 carries for 1,151 yards and 12 touchdowns.
Jones Jr. played one season each at Oregon, Indiana, Michigan State and UCLA before transferring to Nebraska. Jones has played in 37 games, totaling 58 tackles, 6.5 tackles for loss, 3.5 sacks and one pass breakup. McDougle III followed new defensive coordinator Rob Aurich from San Diego State.
McDougle III played in 40 games across four seasons and recorded 143 tackles with 3.5 tackles for loss, six interceptions, 12 pass breakups, two forced fumbles and one fumble recovery. Black and Mubenga combined for 56 games and 41 starts. Black played in 36 games across three seasons at Iowa State. Mubenga also played for three seasons, taking part in 20 games at LSU.

There has been an abundance of NFL-caliber talent come through Eugene since 2020, with a high mark of 41 former Oregon Ducks hearing their names called in the NFL draft — and it's not just mid-to-late-round picks either.
From 2020-2025, seven Ducks were selected in the first round, showcasing the elite talent that Dan Lanning and his staff have not only brought to Eugene, but developed into players worthy of stardom in the NFL. More often than not, those former Oregon standouts have been productive in the league, living up the billing of being selected on the first night of the draft.
On Thursday, CBS Sports released a ranking of all 191 first-round picks since 2020, excluding the 2026 class (which also includes two former Ducks), as they haven't been able to take the field quite yet. Each first-rounder was divided into one of three categories: Best first-round decisions, solid picks with mixed returns and incomplete grades, and the most disappointing selections.
Let's check out where each of the seven first-round picks that came out of Oregon landed in the ranking.
You can probably predict who ended up here. In this top-tier category, four well-known pro Ducks appear: Justin Herbert (No. 6 overall), Penei Sewell (No. 14), Christian Gonzalez (No. 30) and Bo Nix (No. 32). The latter three have had strong team success during their time in the league, each helping lead their teams to the conference championship. Gonzalez went a step further, recording a crucial interception against the Nix-less Denver Broncos in the 2025 AFC Championship game that helped send the New England Patriots to the Super Bowl. While Herbert hasn't sniffed a conference championship yet, he's widely known as a top-10 quarterback in the league based off of pure talent, with team success predicted to come in the near future. All of whom were excellent selections by their respective teams.

Baseball fans in Greenville were in for a wild night on Wednesday. They witnessed a home run and a full-fledged brawl within a matter of seconds. During Greenville Drive's victory over the Hub City Spartanburgers, a home run celebration by one of the Red Sox's top prospects sparked a benches-clearing brawl as players from both teams clashed on the field. The 19-year-old Red Sox prospect was eventually ejected from the game.
"Red Sox #3 prospect Justin Gonzales got ejected for slapping the catcher after his home run," Jomboy Media captioned their X post.
Against Hub City, Gonzales drove in the winning runs with a massive three-run blast. He came to bat with Greenville already leading and extended it to 13-6. After launching his 13 homer of the season, Gonzales took his time around the bases while admiring his shot. As he crossed home plate, catcher Cal Stark threw some words in Gonzales' way, which clearly did not sit well with the young outfielder.
Teammates rushed in to hold him back, but keeping the 6-foot-5, 210-pound Gonzales in check was easier said than done. Even the umpires were reduced to mere spectators as Gonzales broke free and slapped Stark's mask, which absorbed most of the impact of the slap.
As the incident unfolded, both teams flooded the field, and the heat of the moment was hard to miss. Meanwhile, Gonzales' Greenville teammates struggled to get him away from the field and inside the dugout.

The start of the 2026 Kentucky Wildcats football season is just 44 days away, and a new era begins under coach Will Stein. As we count the days down, we're getting to know the players who make up the team, and today we're taking a look at No. 44, Justin Kattus.
Kattus is one of three brothers, two of which played for the Wildcats. Justin is a 6'1", 216 lb tight end out of Cincinnati. He wasn't highly rated out of high school, but he committed to Kentucky, joining older brother Josh, who is now in the NFL.
As a freshman, he saw a little action before redshirting. Last year, he practiced with the team, and continued to work hard, though he didn't make it onto the field. Heading into this season, he's still behind a few other players on the depth chart, but could find value on special teams.
Kattus, like his older brother, will have no issue working hard to improve his game, and contributing anywhere he's asked. His size limits him somewhat, but there are ways to make an impact, and he'll keep working until he finds them.
