The Washington Commanders made a good amount of offseason moves in 2026, including bringing in new offensive and defensive coordinators. One of general manager Adam Peters' biggest goals was to fix the defense, and that's where most of the Commanders' roster changes took place.

He reserved some of his highest praise for Ohio State.

Each day Mark Beard spends in recovery is a reminder of what could have been. He is living a version of the future that his brother, the late former Liverpool Women manager Matt Beard, could have had.
Mark is a professional development coach at Premier League club Hull City. His brother Matt was a revered women's football coach synonymous with Liverpool, where he won back-to-back Women's Super League ***** les in 2013 and 2014 before returning to guide them back into the top flight in 2022. He also led West Ham Women to an unlikely FA Cup final, was twice voted WSL manager of the season and was posthumously inducted into the league's Hall of Fame this year.
Matt died at the age of 47 last September. The inquest into his death is not concluded, but a coroner's court was told that he took his own life.
In the months after Matt's death, Mark went to Sporting Chance, the residential treatment facility and mental health clinic founded by former ***** nal and England captain Tony Adams to help professional sportspeople. What the Mountain State has produced, however, is some of the greatest college athletes in their respective sports.

DAYTONA BEACH — Naismith Hall of Famer, Daytona Beach native and Mainland High School graduate Vince Carter played professional basketball for a long time. Like, a really long time.
Carter's 22-year career from 1998-2020 is the second-longest in the history of the NBA, having just been exceeded by LeBron James during the 2025-26 season.
The eight-time All-Star and dunk extraordinaire called it quits after the COVID-shortened 2020 season and transferred to another career he'd been building for years — sports broadcasting.

During an 11-day span in May, football coach Mike Morgan and girls basketball coach Corey Baerlocher entered their state coaches **** ociation Halls of Fame, while volleyball coach Sue Doering was inducted into the WIAA Hall of Fame.
Each built one of the state's premier programs in their respective sports. Together, they coached 23 state championship teams, hundreds of victories and generations of student-athletes.
Their names now sit alongside another pair of Colfax coaching legends who helped shape the school's athletic identity: longtime boys basketball coach Bob Bafus and former baseball coach Mike Parrish.

Amnerican Flat Track has appointed NASCAR Hall of Famer Rusty Wallace the Grand Marshal of the Caterpillar Jackpine Gypsies Short Track. The Flat Track round will be held August 10 at the South Dakota track, during the 86th Sturgis Motorcycle Rally.
Wallace made his name in NASCAR racing, winning the 1989 NASCAR Cup Series and earning 55 career Cup Series wins. But he also rides, and will be hosting a charity ride Aug. 15 in Deadwood, S.D., with the proceeds supporting the NASCAR Foundation and Special Olympics of South Dakota.

Longtime San Diego Chargers linebacker Bill Ray Smith Jr. has died, his family announced. He was 64.
In a statement released on Wednesday, Smith's family said that the College Football Hall of Famer had been dealing CTE-caused dementia.
"It is with profound sadness that we share the loss of our beloved Billy Ray Smith Jr., who passed away peacefully surrounded by family," the statement said. "Billy Ray faced his long journey with dementia caused by CTE with unmatched bravery, dignity, and strength. Billy Ray brought so much joy, light, and laughter to the world as a devoted father, husband, son, and loyal friend."
A degenerative brain disease, CTE has often been found in those who played contact sports, such as football, and others who have experience repetitive head trauma. It's known to cause cognitive decline, depression and violent mood swings.
Smith, the fifth overall pick in the 1983 NFL Draft, played all 10 of his NFL seasons with the Chargers from 1983-1992. He was a Second-team All-Pro in 1989 and was named to the franchise's 50th Anniversary Team in 2009.

Kansas City Chiefs linebacker Nick Bolton spoke with reporters after practice on Wednesday at Missouri Western State University. He expressed his appreciation for being named a new inductee into the Missouri Athletic Hall of Fame.
"Coming from Texas, Coach (Barry) Odom took a chance on me. I was offered about two weeks before signing day, so I told him, man-to-man, I'm going to give this program everything I've got for giving me a chance. Looking back on it - what is it? from nine years ago on the first day in the building," said Bolton, "So yeah, super proud. Super proud to be a the true son in the University of Missouri. This place has been my home, let me be myself, allowed me to grow into my own and grow into a man. So yeah, man, I was super excited."
Bolton had another impressive season in 2025, leading the Chiefs with 154 total tackles, along with a sack and an interception. He was selected as an alternate for the 2026 Pro Bowl Games. Former San Diego Chargers and New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees will officially be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, OH, as a member of the class of 2026 on August 8. Sean Payton, former Saint and Brees' longtime head coach in the Crescent City, was recently announced as the presenter for No. 9 at the enshrinement ceremony.
Although Brees and Payton had their own backgrounds in the NFL before joining forces in New Orleans in 2006, the QB-HC combo cemented their professional legacies within the Superdome at the heart of the Big Easy, delivering a rebirth to Saints football and aiding in the rebuild of a then-broken city.
Following a 3-13 season and a 2005 campaign that saw zero home games played inside of New Orleans following the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, the city and team required a refresh and found just what Louisiana needed in a first-year head coach and a young gunslinger coming off of a brutal shoulder injury. These guys would grow, progress, and build what would become one of the most prolific offenses in modern league history.
The partnership between Brees and Payton quickly sparked a fire for the black and gold while providing a sense of hope for those still suffering from the tragic natural disaster just a year removed. We knew Taysom Hill could run and pass, but he proved he could catch on this 45-yard touchdown reception against the Carolina Panthers. That's an easy choice for our New Orleans Saints Play of the Day.

The Wall Street Journal editorial board on Monday said President Trump is wrong in his pressure campaign to get rid of the Senate filibuster for the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE America) Act.
"Bad ideas are everywhere in Washington, but here's one that belongs in a hall of fame: President Trump is again pressing Republicans to nuke the Senate's 60-vote filibuster rule to pass the SAVE America Act," the Journal's editorial board wrote.
"Or in other words, hand progressives the tools to pack the Supreme Court and create new states, in exchange for a voting bill that isn't a clear political winner for the GOP," the board continued.
The editorial decried getting rid of the filibuster "in exchange for the SAVE America Act," saying it is "a terrible trade."
"Whether or not Mr. Trump truly believes that hordes of illegal voters are the only reason Republicans ever lose, it isn't true," the board said in the piece.

"I would probably have to say when I got to walk for Naomi Campbell and come face-to-face with her. It really takes a lot to make a bad **** like me cry. Y'all got me! It was so iconic. She's so beautiful, wonderful, and gorgeous. A true icon! Whenever it comes across my timeline, I never skip it. I always sit there and watch," Couleé tells Out.
