FOXBOROUGH, Mass — Christian Gonzalez made one thing very clear regarding his ongoing contract negotiations with the New England Patriots.
And that's that he plans to keep it out of the media.
But while it has been a big topic of discussion, it was further thrown into the public eye when Patriots owner Robert Kraft told reporters on the first day of training camp that the team had extended an offer to Gonzalez that would make him the highest-paid cornerback in the NFL and the highest-paid player in franchise history.
"Everybody knows what Mr. Kraft has done, a ton of respect for Mr. Kraft and what he's done with this franchise," Gonzalez said. "And it's just something we don't want to handle in the media. You know, I keep that with the team and my team and go on about that."

On Sunday, after what appeared to be a harmless slip-up on his part the previous day, second-year man Jeremiah Webb was placed on IR and therefore shut down for the season.

The second-round pick defender has still yet to sign his rookie contract. It's a concerning situation with no end in sight, although Patriots coach Mike Vrabel did offer a little optimism when speaking with media members on Friday.
"We're continuing to work through the contract," Vrabel said. "I think those have been positive between the club and his representatives. Hopefully, we'll get him in here sooner rather than later. I'm not going to put a timeline on it or a timeframe, but I've spoken to Gabe personally. Excited to get him in when he's under contract."
When pressed for a reason for the hold-up, Vrabel wouldn't give a straight answer.

Whether Kayshon Boutte remains a New England Patriot or not, the 24-year-old wide receiver was present and accounted for at the start of training camp.
Boutte is entering the final year of his rookie contract, and there's still a chance that he winds up on the trade block at some point. His presence on the roster makes the team better, but it won't benefit him in the long run with his future contract tied to this season's production.
The best opportunity for Boutte would come in an offense where he'd see significant snaps and maximize his stat output. He won't have an opportunity to do that in New England, where A.J. Brown and Romeo Doubs are expected to be the top receivers.
With that said, the Patriots aren't going to give Boutte away, either. NFL insider Albert Breer noted that he believed that the former LSU standout could have been had for a fifth-round draft pick during the 2026 NFL Draft. If that remains the case, a receiver-needy team could float the Patriots an offer at some point.
Until that happens, it looks like Boutte is in New England to stay.

Patriots coach Mike Vrabel was a player. He knows the difference between playing on real grass and playing on fake grass. His team plays its home games on fake grass, even though the stadium had real grass for the World Cup.
Vrabel was asked about the issue of real grass vs. fake grass during his first press conference of 2026 training camp. He avoided addressing the question.
"My take is we would play anywhere we possibly have to," Vrabel said. "That's my take. It's the kind of football team that I want to create — one that doesn't make excuses, that doesn't care what the environment is. We're going to go open the season in a great environment in Seattle, and we're going to play on grass, we're going to play on turf, and it's going to rain, it's going to snow. There's a lot of things that are going to come up, and my job is to make sure that we're prepared for whatever does happen."
That's fine, but what does he think about the fact that 92 percent of the players prefer real grass? Does he prefer real grass? Does he always practice on real grass, even when the Patriots are preparing to play a game on fake grass?
It's a tough spot for any coach of any team whose owners have decided to play home games on the surface that the players don't prefer. The fact that Vrabel didn't answer the question says plenty about what he personally thinks about the issue.

The New England Patriots made another round of moves on the team's training camp reporting day for veterans.
The Patriots announced that they signed undrafted free agent rookie tight end Jeremiah Franklin and placed wide receiver Jimmy Kibble on injured reserve on Friday.
Franklin was brought in by the team for a tryout on Thursday. The Boston College product was evaluated by the Patriots at the school's Pro Day this year. He went for 506 receiving yards and two touchdowns in 2025. Franklin is the latest tight end to be signed by the team after New England struck a deal with Mitch Van Vooren on Wednesday.
Kibble signed with the Patriots on May 8. The undrafted rookie free agent wide receiver played all four years at Georgetown prior to entering the NFL ranks with New England this offseason. He recorded 1,002 receiving yards and two touchdowns in 2025.

Former Dallas Cowboys quarterback and current CBS Sports ***** yst Tony Romo has been arrested on suspicion of operating a vehicle while under the influence in Wisconsin.
Romo was pulled over at 6:18 CDT in Milwaukee on Thursday, July 23, according to NBC News, where he was arrested after allegedly failing a sobriety test. He was going southbound on Interstate 43. Taken into custody, Romo has since been booked and released with a court date currently scheduled for September 21, which would coincide with Monday night of the NFL's Week 2 slate.
The top CBS matchup that weekend is expected to be the Pittsburgh Steelers visiting the AFC-champion New England Patriots. Romo's arrest came just hours after he'd wrapped an interview with NBC's affiliate WTMJ.
For those who may need a refresher on Romo's career, the quarterback played for 13 seasons in the NFL, all with the Dallas Cowboys, beginning in 2006. Romo has worked alongside announcer Jim Nantz as CBS's lead NFL broadcasting crew.
Romo is originally from Wisconsin, having grown up in Burlington, and was visiting to play in the 2026 Wisconsin Amateur Championship golf tournament, which has become a yearly tradition for the athlete. "It is as tough as you are going to play. I think in almost any golf tournament. Jordan Devey, a member of the New England Patriots' 2014 Super Bowl team, has passed away. He was 38 years old.
Devey's wife, Linsey, shared the news on social media.
Born in American Fork, Utah, Devey did not play football in high school but instead was an avid tuba player as well as a member of the Cavemen's basketball team. After serving a two-year mission in Costa Rica, he enrolled at Snow College in 2009 and two years later transferred to Memphis.
Devey went on to go unselected in the 2013 NFL Draft, but he found a temporary home with the Ravens. After the Ravens let him go that same summer, the Patriots picked him up through their practice squad. He found his was to the 53-man roster the following season and went on to start four of the seven games he appeared in. To cap off the 2014 season, Devey earned a Super Bowl ring as a reserve lineman.
The Patriots traded him to San Francisco the following training camp. He later also spent three seasons with the Chiefs, and one each with the Raiders and Bills. In total, he ended his eight-year NFL career with a combined 45 regular season and playoff appearances.

ESPN's Todd Archer was the first to break the news that Grier, who retired on July 15, would be joining the staff as an offensive ******* istant. The 31-year-old signal-caller signed with the Carolina Panthers before the draft and, according to Archer, nearly joined the Cowboys coaching staff instead of continuing to play at that point.
Grier spent the 2021 and 2022 seasons with the Cowboys before returning to the team in 2024 and 2025 for his second stint. He also spent time with the Carolina Panthers, Cincinnati Bengals, New England Patriots, Los Angeles Chargers, and Philadelphia Eagles, though only in a limited capacity.
Now Grier will reunite with Prescott and the Cowboys ahead of the 2026 NFL season, just in a new role as the longtime quarterback looks to potentially carve out a future career in coaching.

The Patriots put three players on injury lists earlier this week and head coach Mike Vrabel said that a fourth will be joining them.
Vrabel said at his Friday press conference that safety/special teamer Brenden Schooler will go on the non-football injury list to open training camp. Vrabel did not share the nature of the issue that Schooler is dealing with, but said "he may be away for a little bit or out for a little bit."
Schooler had 19 tackles in the 2025 regular season and added six more in the playoffs. He was an All-Pro for his special teams work in 2024.
Linebacker Harold Landry and tight end C.J. Dippre are on the physically unable to perform list while running back Terrell Jennings joins Schooler on NFI.

There has been an abundance of NFL-caliber talent come through Eugene since 2020, with a high mark of 41 former Oregon Ducks hearing their names called in the NFL draft — and it's not just mid-to-late-round picks either.
From 2020-2025, seven Ducks were selected in the first round, showcasing the elite talent that Dan Lanning and his staff have not only brought to Eugene, but developed into players worthy of stardom in the NFL. More often than not, those former Oregon standouts have been productive in the league, living up the billing of being selected on the first night of the draft.
On Thursday, CBS Sports released a ranking of all 191 first-round picks since 2020, excluding the 2026 class (which also includes two former Ducks), as they haven't been able to take the field quite yet. Each first-rounder was divided into one of three categories: Best first-round decisions, solid picks with mixed returns and incomplete grades, and the most disappointing selections.
Let's check out where each of the seven first-round picks that came out of Oregon landed in the ranking.
You can probably predict who ended up here. But he's facing a ton of competition to make the squad in September.

He's worked hard to recover and build a rapport with his new quarterback Tyler Shough, and it's notable that he was one of several wideouts participating in the Drew Brees-led workouts in San Diego. While he didn't technically play for the Saints last year, Emerson did miss the 2025 season recovering from Achilles surgery after going down early in Cleveland Browns training camp. And now he's healthy and taking reps whenever the Saints have been on the field. He could push Quincy Riley for snaps in the starting lineup across from Kool-Aid McKinstry.
Blackmon started at safety in Week 1 last year and stayed on the field for all 66 defensive snaps, plus three reps on special teams, but he noticed some discomfort after the game and was diagnosed with a torn labrum. He's dealt with labrum injuries before but this one required season-ending surgery. He's back in the starting lineup now that he's healthy.

A Chestnut Hill product has touched down in Foxborough ahead of training camp.
The New England Patriots signed former Boston College tight end Jeremiah Franklin following a workout on Thursday, according to a report from CBS Sports' Matt Zenitz.
Unselected in the 2026 NFL draft, Franklin previously attended rookie minicamp at Gillette Stadium on a tryout basis in May. His circling back comes a day after the reigning AFC champions worked out six free agents, signing tight end Mitch Van Vooren and linebacker Riley Wilson while waiving fullback Brock Lampe.
A corresponding move will follow to make room on a summer roster that currently stands north of 91 active players.
Franklin started all 12 games as a senior in the ACC on the way to catching 49 passes for 506 yards and two touchdowns. The 6-foot-3, 244-pound UDFA appeared in 44 games during his Eagles career, including 30 starts, finishing with 93 receptions for 1,010 yards and six touchdowns altogether.
