Coming out of the All-Star break neck-and-neck with the Cleveland Guardians, the Chicago White Sox knew they had to hit the ground running. With two road series on deck against the Toronto Blue Jays and the Texas Rangers, winning each respective series was all that mattered and the White Sox did exactly that.
Thanks to a recent slip in form for the Guardians, the White Sox now hold a slim 1 1/2-game lead in the AL Central. With the Guardians having to face the Tampa Bay Rays and Cincinnati Reds on the road the next six games, the time is now for the White Sox, starting with this first game against the Houston Astros.
Another series win would likely keep their lead in the division before the big, bad New York Yankees come into town. With the Tampa Bay Rays and red-hot Boston Red Sox on deck after that, results are imperative here in this series.
The same goes for the Astros, who may not be benefiting from stealing signs any longer but are certainly taking advantage of an unusually weak AL West division. Although they come into this series with a 50-54 record, they somehow find themselves just two games out of first.
Looking to turn the tide of their poor season, the Astros turn to Spencer Arrighetti to toe the rubber tonight. Arrighetti started out the season as one of the best pitchers in the American League but has since fallen off a cliff. After jumping out to a blistering 7-1 record and an ERA of 1.34 in his first eight starts, Arrighetti has yet to record a single win since. He posted an ERA of nine in the month of June before "settling down" with an ERA of six in three starts so far this month.

We’re just 43 days until the return of Penn State football, and today we’ll take a look at defensive end Dayshaun Burnett.
Burnett is a 6-foot-3, 226-pound redshirt freshman that was a four-star member of the 2025 recruiting. Not surprisingly given his light frame — he was listed around 215 pounds as a recruit — Burnett took a redshirt season as he added weight to properly play defensive end in the Big Ten. While that weight gain is still a work in progress — he’s still only listed at 226 pounds on the roster — Burnett doesn’t lack the twitchiness or athleticism needed for defensive end. Let’s see where he’s listed coming out of the spring, because if he can make a 10-pound jump, Burnett could be a sleeper on the edge.

MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN - MAY 09: Spencer Jones #78 of the New York Yankees before game against the Milwaukee Brewers at American Family Field on May 09, 2026 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. (Photo by John Fisher/Getty Images)
The New York Yankees entered the final stretch before the MLB trade deadline with one of baseball's deepest farm systems and a front office facing difficult decisions. As the club continues weighing whether to move top prospects in pursuit of another postseason run, one of its most recognizable young players has remained at the center of speculation.
Hulking outfielder Spencer Jones has long been viewed as a cornerstone prospect thanks to his rare combination of size, athleticism and power. But after multiple trips between Triple-A and the majors this season, his future in the organization has become a popular topic as rival executives search for impact young talent and the Yankees look to upgrade other areas of the roster before the trade deadline.

CINCINNATI (AP) — Pavel Bucha scored two goals Wednesday night to help FC Cincinnati beat the Vancouver Whitecaps 4-3.
Evander Da Silva Ferreira — known simply as “Evander” — added a goal and an **** ist for Cincinnati and Kevin Denkey also scored a goal. Roman Celentano had three saves for Cincinnati (6-5-5).
Evander scored on the counter-attack to give Cincinnati a 3-2 lead in the 36th minute. As the defense raced back to set up, Evander paused just outside the top of the penalty box and blasted a shot off the left post for his 10th goal this season.
The Whitecaps (10-3-2) played for the first time since before the World Cup break after their game at Chicago, which had originally been scheduled for Thursday, was postponed until Oct. 6 due to poor air quality in the area.
Bucha opened the scoring in the ninth minute and scored again in the 56th. Evander, from near the penalty spot, lofted a ball to the right post where a charging Bucha slammed home a first-touch finish to give Cincinnati a 4-2 lead in the 56th minute.

The Auburn football program is one of the most successful in the history of college football. For the past five seasons, that success has not been seen on the gridiron. New head coach Alex Golesh is looking to change that, but he is not the only one. Quarterback Byrum Brown is as well.
Brown is one of three Tigers that Golesh brought with him to Tampa for the 2026 SEC Media Days along with defensive back Champ Anthony and kicker Alex McPherson. He was asked many questions, but one was about bringing success back to Auburn and how that can be done.
"A successful season looks like taking every game, preparing to our absolute best and going out there and playing, and we don't control the outcome. We just control our process that leads to the outcome," Brown said.
It is very similar to the message that Golesh also gave on Tuesday to the media on what a successful season looks like. "I don't really have any goals other than laying a foundation for what Auburn Football is going to be for years to come," Golesh stated on Tuesday. The key to that foundation for 2026 is without a doubt the abilities of Brown.
"Hopefully it's a favorable one, but it's just working each and every day, and that started in January. And it's continuing now, going to continue into fall camp. And we can't wait to strap it up in fall camp, strap it up for the first week against Baylor and go play," added Brown.

The **** umption would have been that a No. 2 seed beats a No. 7 seed, but when it comes down to the Iowa high school state baseball tournament, it's advised not to **** ume.
With the mindset of "why not us," Davenport **** umption made it nine straight wins on Tuesday, July 21, with an 11-1 win in six innings over Carlisle (26-9). **** umption's 20th state tournament appearance now features a state semifinal berth with a chance to return to the state final for the first time since 2022.
With a 27-13 record and the No. 7 seed, **** umption has recently had a new mentality leading up to the state tournament.
"I don't think the seed has anything to do with it," said **** umption head coach Greg Thissen. "I think getting to the state tournament, everybody that makes it feels like they have a chance to win. I feel like it's been us against the like two or three weeks ago. It all came together, had a couple big wins, had a couple discussions."

England have the chance to take a giant stride towards immortality when they face Argentina in the World Cup semi-final in their biggest match since winning the 1966 final at Wembley.
The Three Lions have reached two World Cup semi-finals in the six decades since then - at Italia '90 and then in Russia eight years ago - but this latest edition reignites an old rivalry, adding layers with history and controversial sub-plots.
England have lost the past two European Championship finals but, under the roof of the futuristic Atlanta Stadium, head coach Thomas Tuchel and his players have the chance to write themselves into legend by reaching the country's first men's World Cup final in 60 years.
The fact it was standing room only at Tuchel's pre-match media briefing, even though it was moved to a bigger venue, illustrates the scale of global interest in this chapter.
Wednesday's match (20:00 BST) is England's latest chance to finally reach another global showpiece - a barrier that has proved insurmountable since Sir Alf Ramsey's side lifted the Jules Rimet trophy in 1966.

The NBA world is still waiting for LeBron James to choose his next team as the last major domino to fall this offseason. Other players need LeBron off the market before other teams go after them. The free agency period has stalled until James announces his destination to get things going again. NBA insider Brian Windhorst revealed that owners and General Managers are no longer getting any calls from LeBron or his agent Rich Paul.
Windhorst said the following about James calling players instead of speaking with team figureheads:
“Some of the owners who are trying to get LeBron James (on the phone) were talking to each other and were like ‘have you heard anything? Nope. Have you heard anything? Nope.’ LeBron is reaching out and talking to players on some of these teams and they report back to their GM or coach ‘Hey, LeBron called.”
Players from the teams interested in LeBron have been getting phone calls or messages from James. The Philadelphia 76ers reportedly have had Tyrese Maxey and Jaylen Brown reaching out to LeBron as part of the recruiting process. It now appears that every team with a realistic chance has had some of their players answering questions when James reached out.
The reports and rumors continue to fly, but no one seems to have a good read on LeBron’s next team. Betting sites have made the Cleveland Cavaliers the favorite for weeks now due to the hometown appeal and a chance to contend with a deep roster.

The Cincinnati Bengals have had an interesting offseason when it comes to player rankings.
A good example? NFL executives and coaches overlooking DJ Turner.
There was also that time when “trios rankings” decided that the trio of Joe Burrow, Ja’Marr Chase and Chase Brown was only the sixth-best “trio” in the entire NFL.
But not all rankings agree with that sort of idea.
CBS Sports’ Jared Dubin just penned his own trios rankings and put the Bengals in the very top spot.

Tyler Herro says he is focusing on helping the Milwaukee Bucks and not looking in the past following his altercation with former Miami Heat teammate Bam Adebayo in Las Vegas last week.
Herro, who was dealt last week to the Bucks as part of the Giannis Antetokounmpo trade, told ESPN’s Ramona Shelbourne that he wants to “move on” from the incident and is "focused on the next chapter in Milwaukee."
"Honestly, I'm just trying to move past all of it," Herro said. "I'm focused on Milwaukee and building something special. They obviously just traded the greatest player in their history, so we want to come in and help continue what they've been doing."
On Friday, The Athletic reported that Herro and Adebayo went at it inside a gym at Resorts World Casino in front of Herro's AAU team in Las Vegas. The Heat and Bucks played one another that afternoon. Witnesses reported that Herro said something to Adebayo as Adebayo walked onto the courts. Adebayo then approached Herro and reportedly punched him. Herro’s AAU coach confronted Adebayo as Herro yelled at his former Miami teammate as he was escorted away by security personnel.
According to ESPN’s Shams Charania, the dust up occurred after Herro was approached by Adebayo about criticism he lobbied at Adebayo after their time together with the Heat came to an end.

July 13 (UPI) -- New York Liberty guard/forward Betnijah Laney-Hamilton was ejected during an eventual loss to the Toronto Tempo after she hit guard Marina Mabrey with a shoe.
The incident happened with 1:48 remaining in the 93-91 setback Sunday in Montreal. Laney-Hamilton, who picked up an initial technical foul earlier in the game for a separate incident with Mabrey, said she did not intend to hit her opponent with the shoe.
"I would never intentionally try to hit someone with a shoe, especially while they're not looking," Laney-Hamilton said, according to the New York Post. "Teammate was without a shoe, so I did my best to try and get it to her. Unfortunately, it did hit someone."
Laney-Hamilton was on the bench during the incident. She hit Mabrey in the back with the shoe, which came off teammate Jonquel Jones' foot.
"She was trying to get the shoe back to J.J.," Liberty coach Chris DeMarco told reporters. "It hit somebody. I think we are just making stuff up. ... I just know it was an atrocious end to that game from the officials."

Goals proved decisive as Kerry's quest for back-to-back All-Ireland SFC ***** les remains on course with a 2-18 to 0-20 victory over Dublin in Sunday's semi-final.
In scorching heat at Croke Park, Jack O'Connor's men did enough to get past a stern Dublin, who will reflect on a day where they were close to upsetting the odds, but 12 wides and two goal chances of their own passed up cost them.
It was the first championship meeting between the old rivals since Dublin won the 2023 All- Ireland final and while Ger Brennan's men have enjoyed a relatively productive campaign with wins over Donegal and Galway, the Kingdom remained a step ahead.
While David Clifford was held quiet for long spells, the Fossa man still ended up with 1-6 to his name as Kerry found a way to get him on the ball, but older brother Paudie pulled the strings with five points of his own.
For Dublin, Con O'Callaghan was well contained, but Cormac Costello and Colm Basquel stepped up, but they needed more on the day as Kerry will now face Mayo in the final on Sunday, 26 July.

Thomas Tuchel says his England side were lucky to beat Norway in the World Cup quarter finals.
Jude Bellingham’s brace secured England’s passage to the semi finals with a 2-1 win in Miami after extra time.
But Tuchel says his side must improve if they are to make the final.
“We made life very, very difficult for ourselves today,” he said.
“The result is fantastic, being in the last four is amazing, but not happy with the performance.

Norway, a nation traditionally ******* ociated with winter sports (shout-out to Lucas Braathen), is experiencing a magical moment on the football pitch.
For the first time playing in the quarterfinals of a FIFA World Cup — right after sending the Brazilian national team home — the Scandinavian side is proving that the success of stars like Erling Haaland and Martin Odegaard did not come out of nowhere.
In a report this Saturday (11), ge detailed that this World Cup success is the result of a structural revolution that has led to 93% of children in Norway currently taking part in a youth team.
The rise of Norwegian football is directly tied to the modernization of its infrastructure.
In a country that deals with harsh cold and snow, the construction of more than 500 artificial turf fields since 2016 has helped democratize access to the sport all year round.

Saturday's FIFA World Cup quarterfinal between England and Norway faces fresh uncertainty due to severe weather conditions, with the 5pm ET kickoff potentially subject to postponement.
Thomas Tuchel and Ståle Solbakken's teams are gearing up for Saturday's marquee quarterfinal at Miami's Hard Rock Stadium, but adverse weather is threatening to overshadow proceedings. With punishing heat and thunderstorms predicted throughout South Florida, mounting worries suggest the game could encounter delays or even brief halts.
The US National Weather Service has issued a heat advisory for the area, cautioning that temperatures could reach as high as 109°F when humidity is considered. Those circumstances have been compounded by a blanket of Saharan dust that crossed the Atlantic earlier this week, creating hazy skies and sparking health warnings for individuals with allergies and respiratory issues, via Wales Online.

Lazio sporting director Angelo Fabiani has landed in Croatia to negotiate with Dinamo Zagreb for Sergi Dominguez.
The Aquile have recently reached a €30 million agreement with AC Milan for Mario Gila's transfer, while Alessio Romagnoli has long been given the green light to complete his transfer to Al-Sadd. Therefore, Lazio must sign at least one new centre-back this summer, and Dominguez has been at the top of the shortlist.
According to Italian journalist Alfredo Pedulla, Lazio and Dinamo Zagreb are about to engage in direct talks, with the Croatian champions requesting €15 million, including bonuses.
This asking price is also confirmed by Il Messaggero, which notes that the Spaniard's original club, Barcelona, will receive a 20% sell-on fee. The Roman newspaper also reveals that the Biancocelesti's current offer is around €10 million, so the two parties still have a significant gap to bridge, prompting a face-to-face meeting.
Therefore, Fabiani travelled to Croatia on Thursday morning. He was spotted in the city of Split, as revealed by Calciopitolino.it.

When former UFC two-division champion Conor McGregor returns to the cage at UFC 329 on Saturday, he'll have gone a full five years between fights. Here we will pause to, as the kids say, let that sink in.
He suffered that broken leg in his loss to Dustin Poirier on July 10, 2021. He will come back to face Max Holloway on July 11, 2026. Five years almost to the day. We don't often get that kind of clean symmetry amid the messy reality of fight sports, so it's worth noting.
For the sake of perspective, five years is also how long it took to build the Hoover Dam. It's about the length of the entire American Civil War, from the first shots fired at Fort Sumter to the surrender at Appomattox Court House. It's about as long as The Beatles played to live crowds as a touring rock band. It's a little more than a year longer than Ronda Rousey's entire UFC career.
Five years is a long time to be absent from anything you might call a vocation, but it's an eternity in fight sports. We can't say McGregor has done no fight-related work in that time. He was gearing up for a comeback fight against Michael Chandler in 2024, before a broken toe convinced him to withdraw. But that's not the same as slinging leather when it counts, under the lights, and against an opponent who genuinely means to do you great bodily harm.
McGregor's been back in the gym and doing serious work for many months now, or so we're told, so it's not as if he's going straight from the yacht to the Octagon. But leaving the cage on a stretcher and coming back five years later with a metal rod in your leg is a tricky business. We've seen it attempted before in this sport, but we haven't seen it go all that well.

Michigan basketball has moved another step closer toward keeping its entire roster intact after Dusty May’s departure.
Incoming freshman Marcus Moller, a 7-foot-3 center from Denmark, and redshirt sophomore guard Ricky Liburd are reportedly sticking with the Wolverines amid the program’s coaching change.
Moller and Liburd are the 10th and 11th Michigan players who’ve pledged to stay after May left for the NBA’s Dallas Mavericks and Mike Boynton Jr. was named interim head coach. That list includes fellow freshmen Malachi Brown, Lincoln Cosby, Joseph Hartman and Brandon McCoy Jr.; transfers J.P. Estrella, Moustapha Thiam and Jalen Reed; and returners Elliot Cadeau and Trey McKenney.
Moller was the first of six commits in Michigan’s 2026 recruiting class that’s ranked fourth nationally by 247Sports. At 7-3, he’ll match former center Aday Mara as the tallest player in program history.
“Marcus is a connector. He plays for his teammates, talks on defense and embraces preparation. He really plays with a poise beyond his years,” May said in a statement when Moller signed with the program in November.
