Australia will host an NFL game for the first time ever Thursday when the San Francisco 49ers play the Los Angeles Rams at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.
While much of the focus on this opening week game has been about the logistics, it'll just be football once the teams kicks off. And just like any other game, someone will sing the national anthem before it gets started... or in this case, the national anthems.
As usual for the NFL international series, the anthems of both the host nation and United States will be sung before the game. On Thursday night, it'll be Infinity Song singing the U.S. national anthem and Cody Simpson singing the Australian anthem.

The FSU Seminoles fell to the SMU Mustangs 27-24 on Monday in Doak Campbell Stadium, and their fans are fed up with the team and Mike Norvell. It was a winnable game for Florida State, but they once again found ways to lose.
Since their 13-1 season in 2023, when they won the ACC and nearly made the College Football Playoff, FSU has gone 8-18 overall and 3-17 in conference play under Norvell. That has caused numerous fans to call for his job, but that is not an easy move.
While their performance over the past two-plus seasons has been well below FSU's standards, it will be expensive to move on from Norvell. According to Craig Myers of USA TODAY Sports, his buyout is $46.7 million if he is fired before Dec. 1, 2026.
If FSU does decide to fire Norvell, his buyout would be the third-biggest in college football history, behind only the $76.8 million the Texas A&M Aggies paid Jimbo Fisher and the $54 million the LSU Tigers paid Brian Kelly. The Seminoles paid Willie Taggart $18 million when they fired him during the 2029 season.
FSU signed Mike Norvell to an eight-year contract worth around $84 million ahead of the 2024 season and guaranteed him that his buyout would be 85% of his remaining salary if he was fired. The deal seemed like a smart move at the time. Not only were they coming off their 13-1 performance in 2023, but the Alabama Crimson Tide were considering hiring him to replace Nick Saban.

Carlos Alcaraz is moving on after a definitive win over Tommy Paul, beating the American in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3, 6-4.
In a baffling stat, Sunday's third-set victory marks the 14th straight set that Alcaraz has won against Paul. The American has not won a set over Alcaraz since Wimbledon in 2024, even though the pair have faced off four times since then.
Though Paul was unable to break through again this time, he did put up a close fight in the first set: Alcaraz and Paul traded games, until the young Spaniard finally broke the American's serve to eventually win 6-4.
Alcaraz looked like he was on his way to an easy win in the second set, but Paul started to battle back, fighting off multiple break points before Alcaraz was able to hold him off.
Paul fought another break from Alcaraz in the the third game of the set, scoring three unanswered points to claw back from a near-scoreless game. But Alcaraz recovered well to ******* the break point and send him on the path to victory.

The inspiration behind such a rivalry can range from epic divisional battles to a single, historic play years ago to everything and anything else in between. Throughout my years as a Dolphins fan, I have watched our primary rival shift many times, yet I have consistently found myself hating the New York Jets above all others, because they clearly have it coming. For the first eight innings of Thursday's contest against the St. Louis Cardinals, the absence of Shohei Ohtani in the starting lineup was emphatically felt.
Ohtani had went 0-4 with four strikeouts during Wednesday's 8-6 extra-inning loss to St. Louis, and the Dodgers decided to give him the night off. Although the offense floundered throughout most of Thursday, they were able to string together a ninth inning rally to walk off St. Louis 3-2.
As the Dodgers prepare to host the Washington Nationals for three games, the question of whether Ohtani will be back in the lineup or not remains undecided. Sonja Chen of MLB.com notes that a move to the injured list for the two-way superstar is unlikely, but the team will monitor his health over the final 22 games of the regular season.
"Right now, I would consider it unlikely," Roberts said. "Unlikely, but not impossible."
"I think it's up to us to kind of figure out how we navigate these next three and a half, four weeks," Roberts said. "But I'm very confident that we'll see the guy we all expect to see."

Coming into the season, Austin Wells had a .224 career batting average and a .717 OPS. He had never been an elite producer at the plate, but posted 20 homers last season and was good enough for the Yankees to stick with him.
However, he was having an awful season through June. In his first 56 games, he had a .155/.255/.238 slash line and just four home runs. The Yankees reportedly tried trading for a catcher, but were unable to land one. Wells has lost at-bats and starts to Ali Sánchez lately, but he has turned his awful season around.
Since July 1, Wells is slashing .238/.314/.426. He has a .740 OPS and six home runs. He is never going to be a guy who hits for a high average, but his .740 OPS is a big boost for the Yankees. He is producing for an offense that is without Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton, and his contributions are not going unnoticed. On Wednesday night, he gave the Yankees the lead in extra innings with a two-out, two-RBI single.
"You feel like he's that threat again down there. That's massive," Yankees manager Aaron Boone said, per The Athletic's Chris Kirschner.

Bayern Munich head coach Vincent Kompany has heard the theories that the squad could use a "goalkeeper by competition" strategy, but the boss does not want anyone to think that will be the case for his team during the 2026/27 season.
Against VfL Osnabrück on Wednesday, Kompany will start Jonas Urbig.
"I dismiss the idea of having a dedicated cup or Champions League goalkeeper. We're looking at the fixture list; it's about seeing what's best – also for Manuel Neuer and giving Jonas a chance to shine. I did that once in my first year as head coach, and it was a mistake," said Kompany (as captured by iMiaSanMia). "Jonas Urbig will start in goal tomorrow. Over the course of the season, it will be the same as last term. We've already put an incredible amount of trust in Jonas. He's played in many important matches, such as the cup final. These are milestones that show he can perform in big games."
For the betterment of the squad — and also the health of Neuer and the development of Urbig — Kompany will manage the workload balance as he sees fit and base it on how he ****** ses each player, not on what competition a game is in.

The deadline for all 32 teams to cut to the 53-man roster has passed. Young players have earned their first real shot in the NFL, and for some, a chance to find a new home and a new scheme to play in. Some moves made today have left some surprised, and some NFL teams may regret the cuts they made. Let's take a look at three players the Cleveland Browns may regret cutting.
Sometimes, keeping fan favorites is not a bad thing. In the case of wide receiver Luke Floeria, with all the bad will the Browns have stirred up as of late, the fans will not love seeing this move. Yes, this was a crowded receiver room, but his preseason play made many believe he had earned a main roster spot.
KT Leveston getting cut definitely came as a bit of a surprise, as he somehow has gone from battling for a starting right guard spot to looking for a new home. Even if you believe he was not the answer at right guard, deciding not to even keep him on the roster as a depth offensive lineman is certainly puzzling, and one Cleveland will likely want back.
Lastly, Tyreak Sapp getting let go is not surprising in the sense that this defensive tackle room is both crowded and talented, but that he showed glimpses in camp. It never hurts to have too many big, beefy men along the defensive line, and letting go of one might come back to bite the franchise.

Liverpool are heading into the closing days of the summer window with multiple moving parts, and the sense around Anfield is that business may not yet be finished. According to Fabrizio Romano on his YouTube channel, supporters should be alert to the possibility of a late twist in the club's search for attacking cover.
The broad picture is already significant. Liverpool are reported to be closing in on Bradley Barcola in a deal that could rise to £123m, a move that would underline serious intent in the market. At the same time, Cody Gakpo's future appears less certain amid interest from Manchester City. If that situation develops further, Liverpool may be forced to act quickly for another winger before the deadline.

The Jets appeared to end their kicking competition this week when they released Cade York, but Jason Sanders's performance on Friday night may have opened things back up.
Sanders missed an extra point after a touchdown in the first quarter and he missed a field goal in the fourth quarter of the game. That led to a question for head coach Aaron Glenn about whether the Jets are going to look elsewhere for help at the position before they face the **** ans in Week 1.
"Am I worried about it? I didn't like the fact that we missed these field goals, but the thing is we're not going to panic and we're going to make sure that we make the right decision to make sure we either fix those issues or we get the right person in here," Glenn said, via a transcript from the team. "But Jason has been good for us. He's been good in practice. I'm going to evaluate that and see exactly what direction we'll go."
Sanders spent seven seasons as the Dolphins' kicker before missing all of last year with a hip injury.

The Houston Texans traded for Kayshon Boutte this week with hopes that he will be a solid No. 2 receiver for them behind Nico Collins. That's why it was a little shocking to hear Mike Vrabel say Thursday night that if the New England Patriots hadn't dealt Boutte, he likely wouldn't have seen the field for them because of their improved depth at the position.
Boutte's 33 receptions last season was fifth on the Patriots squad, although two of the players ahead of him were tight end Hunter Henry and running back TreVeyon Henderson. His 551 yards was third on the team and his six touchdown catches was second. Still, in the offseason, the Patriots traded for three-time Pro Bowl receiver A.J. Brown and signed former Packers receiver A.J. Doubs as a free agent. Those two are going to be New England's top options at receiver with DeMario Douglas also expected to get plenty of time. The backups are Mack Hollins and Kyle Williams, who both play special teams, something Boutte hasn't done since he entered the league in 2023.
"It was one place where we do have some depth," Vrabel told reporters after the Patriots' final preseason game Thursday night. "I think for all parties involved, that was probably the best thing. Without injuries, Kayshon probably would've been inactive, unfortunately. Just kind of the way it was with him not playing special teams."
The Texans traded a 2028 seventh-round pick and second-year safety Jaylen Reed for Boutte earlier this week, a few days after losing their No. 2 receiver Jayden Higgins to injury.
Boutte, who caught a touchdown over Texans' All-Pro cornerback Derek Stingley Jr., in last season's playoff game, was with the team this week in Charlotte, N.C., for a joint practice with the Carolina Panthers, but didn't participate in team drills, instead working off to the side with a trainer.

Angelo State University announced that the Angelo State football Week 0 home opener against Fort Haynes on Thursday would be delayed following inclement weather in San Angelo.
The Rams season opener against Fort Hayes was originally scheduled to start at 7 p.m. on Thursday. However, a batch of local storms with lightning first delayed the stadium gates at LeGrand Stadium, then delayed the start of the game.

As years and seasons pass, the modern NFL becomes increasingly obsessed with disguise. Coaches and their coordinators spend countless hours searching for ways to confuse quarterbacks, hide intentions, and create pre-snap hesitation. The challenge, however, is that complexity can become a double-edged sword. A defense that confuses opponents can sometimes confuse the players who execute it.
That balancing act is something the Baltimore Ravens have been working through during training camp. Eric DeCosta and company have ***** embled a unit filled with versatile players who can line up in multiple spots. Jesse Minter and Anthony Weaver are charged with teaching players to handle a variety of responsibilities.
The more flexibility a defense possesses, the more options coaches have at their disposal. The question becomes how to maximize that versatility without overwhelming the players expected to execute it. Recently, Ravens defensive coordinator Anthony Weaver spoke with reporters and was asked about the ripple effects of having so many defenders capable of moving around the formation.
"The ripple effect for the players, I think, is you have to have a very smart team — because if you are going to move guys around, ultimately that means other guys are going to have to do different jobs, too."
Weaver's answer offered an interesting look at the philosophy guiding Baltimore's defensive approach. That comment highlights an often-overlooked aspect of defensive football. Versatility isn't just about one player learning multiple positions.

Through two preseason games, the Green Bay Packers have seen plenty of encouraging signs from the players who should have key roles in the regular season. The first game saw the third and fourth string units get exposed in the second half, but in both contests, the starting offense and defense looked solid at worst.
Is it too early to get excited about this team, though? That's certainly the message from one of its coordinators about one of his players, namely rookie kicker Trey Smack. Yes, he's 7-for-7 on field goals with three coming from 51 or more yards (plus another 58-yarder that was taken off the board due to a penalty), but Cam Achord isn't letting him get complacent, nor is he encouraging fans to get too hyped up yet either.
Likewise, MarShawn Lloyd has put in a couple of good performances in his bid to be the Packers' RB2, but we've seen some flashes from him in the past in preseason action. This year feels different, but he still needs to go out and do it in the regular season (and do it consistently), something we haven't yet observed.
So for now, let's be encouraged by some of these performances, but keep expectations in check. This team is still young and still coming together. While the expectations should still be to compete for an NFC North ***** le and make a Super Bowl run, there will surely still be some ***** ps along the way.

"I've been wanting to get back for a while," Bellinger said. "You always want to be realistic, and for me, I want to come back and stay. You don't want to make anything worse. I'm itching to get back, but I've got to continue to play it safe and make sure I'm 100 percent ready." In his second year with New York, Bellinger was an All-Star this season and figures to fortify an outfield that's also been without Aaron Judge in right.
New York Post | Andrew Crane: Giancarlo Stanton strained his left calf earlier this week, calling into question whether he'll be able to return this season, Aaron Boone revealed Saturday. The DH was working back from multiple strains to his right calf when he fell while running the bases, leading to a moderate strain in his left. "We're at a point in the calendar where it gets challenging," said Boone, acknowledging the reality that Stanton's return this season is in jeopardy. Big G has appeared in only 24 games this season, adding to the struggles to stay on the field that have plagued his Yankees tenure.

The New York Yankees have been dealing with a few major injury issues this season, with Cody Bellinger, Max Freid, Gerrit Cole, Carlos Rodon, and Aaron Judge all missing extended time.
But one of the other injury issues revolves around Giancarlo Stanton. The veteran slugger has been on the injured list for most of the season, last playing on April 24.
Now, amid a recovery from a calf issue, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com is reporting Stanton has strained his other calf and is going to miss even more time for the Yankees, potentially the rest of the season.
"Giancarlo Stanton strained his other calf," Hoch reports. "He fell while running. Moderate grade strain, Aaron Boone said. He may be out for the season."

Rafael Devers delivered the dramatic moment everyone expected Friday night. The Boston Red Sox still walked away with the result that mattered. Boston spoiled Devers' first game back at Fenway Park since the blockbuster trade, defeating the San Francisco Giants 6-4 in the opener of a three-game series.
Devers launched a 412-foot home run in the fourth inning, but Willson Contreras answered the former Red Sox star with an even bigger blast. England have been dealt an injury blow with Sam Curran forced to undergo surgery and set to be sidelined for the remainder of the summer.
All-rounder Curran is a key figure in England's white-ball sides and had been expected to be added the Test squad at some point during the series against Pakistan.
But the Surrey left-armer has now undergone surgery on a groin injury at the conclusion of the Hundred, ending his chances of a Test recall.
National selector Marcus North had hinted that Curran would likely be considered as an all-round option after the retirement of Ben Stokes.
"With the retirement of Ben Stokes, it's quite clear that he provided us with a certain balance in the team," North had said. "Sam Curran is certainly a player of interest for us.

MANHATTAN — Kansas State football held its first open practice to the media on Tuesday, Aug. 18, and it was highlighted by the notable absences of two ***** umed offensive line starters.
Left tackle John Pastore and left guard Tanner Morley were not seen during the first portion of practice, which saw the Wildcats move from an outdoor practice field to the indoor as weather moved into the Manhattan area.
Kansas State's offensive line has undergone an overhaul this offseason under new coach Collin Klein. Pastore is the team's lone returning starter and is a preseason All-Big 12 player. Morley was the highlight of the Wildcats' transfer portal haul along the offensive line. The other three offensive line spots appear to be up for grabs.
It's unclear whether or how long either player will be held out, or the extent of whatever they are dealing with. Kansas State isn't scheduled to make Klein available to the media until Monday, Aug. 31, while the team's coordinators are scheduled to speak Thursday, Aug. 20.
If Kansas State is without either player, the Wildcats could look to freshman Oliver Miller at left tackle, who has drawn high praise since arriving on campus. The left guard position would be more of a question, as several players have been battling for the right guard spot. Pastore and Morley have been the most sure-fire players to play along the offensive line throughout the offseason.

CINCINNATI (AP) — Elly De La Cruz delivered his first career walk-off hit in the 10th inning after Dane Myers hit a tying pinch-hit homer in the ninth, and the Cincinnati Reds rallied past the St. Louis Cardinals 6-5 on Monday night to split a doubleheader.
Down to their final out in the ninth, the Reds went to the bench for Myers, who had homered in the opener. Myers delivered again, driving his fifth home run of the season into the left-center seats to tie the game at 5.
De La Cruz won the game an inning later, grounding a single into left field that was deflected off third baseman Blaze Jordan's glove, allowing automatic runner Tyler Stephenson to score.
Emilio Pagán (5-1) pitched a hitless 10th inning while starter Rhett Lowder matched a career high with 6 2/3 innings pitched. He allowed four runs on eight hits while striking out five, helping the Reds snap a three-game skid.
St. Louis, which won the opener 2-1, led 4-1 before Cincinnati rallied in the sixth.

Liverpool's worst period of transfer business will be sealed should a £52m+ deal go through. Now we just wait.
Liverpool did something crazy after winning the Premier League in 2025. They decided to overhaul the squad at great expense, moving players on and bringing several in.
The incomings would cost over £400m all-in, offset by around £200m in outgoings. And there were many, many outgoings.
In hindsight, though, those outgoings were terrible. Or at least, most of them were. It's something now underlined by a potential £52m+ deal for Jarell Quansah, with ***** nal lining up a move before the end of the window (Sky Sports).
Now, the actual value of that potential deal hasn't been confirmed, primarily because Bayer Leverkusen don't wish to sell. ***** nal want to convince them otherwise, though, and plan to offer a large amount.

"Newcastle United look set to sign Leicester City youngster Christian Boothe, NUFC Blog can exclusively reveal," the outlet reported. "The 16-year-old midfielder has impressed in Leicester's youth ranks and looks set to be the latest domestic talent snapped up by the club."
According to NUFC Blog, Boothe has already been playing considerably above his age group. He made 18 appearances for Leicester's Under-18 team last season before earning two appearances at Under-21 level while still only 15.
The midfielder is described as a tall, technically gifted central player with quick feet and significant potential, and he will join an academy that has made considerable progress in recent years.

With LeBron James joining the Philadelphia 76ers in free agency, the NBA's schedule makers have been given the green light to get to work on the 2026-27 campaign.
"Where LeBron plays will affect the schedule," NBA commissioner Adam Silver told CNBC's Andrew Ross Sorkin in July. "So I would like him to make his announcement already, so we can finish the schedule, because, as you might imagine, the teams are calling us, the networks are calling us, and everybody wants to lock in the schedule. But it will influence how we set the schedule, how we set opening week, Christmas Day, etc."
On Tuesday, the league announced the slate for two of its marquee broadcasting days, Opening Night and Christmas Day. True to Silver's word, the schedules for both days feature James' Sixers.
The 2026-27 regular season tips off Tuesday, Oct. 20, when Philadelphia will take on the defending NBA champion New York Knicks in Madison Square Garden, the Oklahoma City Thunder travel to face the San Antonio Spurs in a rematch of the Western Conference Finals, and the Boston Celtics take the court against the Detroit Pistons.
Unsurprisingly, James and the Sixers will feature in the primetime 7 p.m. ET slot. However, fans were quick to note the Celtics-Pistons game's unorthodox 3 p.m. ET start time. ESPN's Dave McMenamin appeared on Tuesday's NBA Today episode to provide some insight into the decision.

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) — Footballs and fists were thrown. Trash talk was hurled throughout, too.
It all made for one competitive and, at times, heated joint practice for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and New York Jets on Tuesday.
The first of four scuffles started, according to Bucs right tackle Luke Goedeke, when Jets rookie edge rusher David Bailey called him out during 1-on-1 drills because he wanted to go up against him.
"And lost," Goedeke said of Bailey.
The two lined up against each other several times and the No. 2 overall draft pick appeared to mostly get the better of the veteran O-lineman. They stalemated on one and Bailey appeared to pat Goedeke on the helmet. It set off a fracas that included Goedeke and Bailey taking swings at each other and players from both sides jumping in.

Barnet defender Danny Collinge has signed a new "long-term" contract with the club.
The 28-year-old joined Barnet in 2022 and has made 160 appearances for the Bees, scoring 17 goals.
He was part of the side that won the National League ****** le in 2024-25 and featured in all but three games last season.
Manager Dean Brennan described Collinge as a "serious leader" and said the new deal rewarded his importance to the squad.
"I think the club's on a really good trajectory and it's something I want to be a part of," said Collinge.
