Warriors reportedly denied $285M deal that would have secured 76ers superstar LeBron James originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The Golden State Warriors were one of the most aggressive teams pursuing LeBron James during his free agency process. James is entering his 24th NBA season, yet he was pursued like a young star entering his prime.
Instead, the 41-year-old veteran is nearing the end of his legendary career. The Warriors wanted to pair Stephen Curry and James together for the final years of their careers, and at one point, Golden State was even considered one of the favorites to land him.
"I would be stunned if he picked a team that wasn't Golden State or Cleveland," a Western Conference executive told FOS' Alex Schiffer.
The Warriors were right in the middle of the race for the four-time NBA champion but ultimately fell short. James decided to sign with the Philadelphia 76ers, and a major factor in that decision was believed to be Philadelphia's acquisition of former Boston Celtics star Jaylen Brown.

Matisse Thybulle is officially headed to the Los Angeles Lakers, the team announced on Monday, giving the team a proven perimeter defender to its reshaped roster.
Thybulle, 29, is a two-time NBA All-Defensive Second Team selection, adding one of the league's most disruptive defensive players to piece alongside Luka Dončić, Austin Reaves and new starting center Walker Kessler.
Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Thybulle spent last season with the Portland Trail Blazers, playing in 30 games off the bench while averaging 5.8 points, 2.0 rebounds and 2.0 steals in 16.0 minutes per game.
He also shot 39.8% from 3-point range last season, developing into a consistent 3-and-D piece as he shot 41.8% comibied in the last two seasons. The only knock is he only played just 45 games the last two seasons.

Chelsea are targeting deals for Maxence Lacroix, Danny Welbeck and Jordan Henderson - and the ages of the experienced trio seem to signal a major change in transfer tactics from the Blues.
At 26, it could be said that Crystal Palace and France defence Lacroix is in his prime, but the £52m target is still notably older than other recent Blues signings.
It has been two years since Chelsea signed a player older than Lacroix, and Tosin Adarabioyo was only marginally older when he arrived three months before turning 27.
Meanwhile, Brighton striker Welbeck is 35 and keen to move to Stamford Bridge, and Brentford and England midfielder Henderson is 36.
Welbeck's potential arrival could mean he replaces 23-year-old Liam Delap in the first-team picture.

Amid the excitement of the 2026 WNBA All-Star celebrations, WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert announced the launch of a Replay Center beginning with the 2027 season, a move intended to address concerns about officiating and on-court safety raised by players, coaches and fans.
"This is one of the most significant investments we've ever made in our basketball operations," said Engelbert during the All-Star pregame press conference on Saturday. "This investment of tens of millions of dollars will help bring greater consistency, efficiency, and transparency to our officiating process, while continuing to improve the quality of the game."
Engelbert shared few details about the project but said that the WNBA will center operations alongside the NBA Replay Center in Secaucus, N.J., where officials will have access to additional camera angles and replay footage to help them make better-informed decisions.
Los Angeles Sparks forward and WNBPA president Nneka Ogwumike welcomed the move, emphasizing the positive impact it can have on the relationship between players and the league.

LeBron James is returning to one of his most beloved roles on the court after signing with the Philadelphia 76ers.
For the first time in his NBA career, LeBron James will don the jersey of the Philadelphia 76ers as the 41-year-old signed a two-year, $8 million deal with the organization.
However, many are skeptical of how the 76ers will actually compete with so many ball-dominant players on the same roster.
After all, the 76ers already had Joel Embiid, Jaylen Brown, and Tyrese Maxey on the team before adding James to the mix.

"For me this is very sentimental, it's about Wales, my people, my team and giving us all that one last little stab at something when it's a bit hard."
With two Commonwealth medals and an Olympic Games on the CV, Rosie Eccles would be forgiven for walking away from boxing after significant injury battles.
But this fighter doesn't do easy.
Having left the GB set up in March, Eccles is determined to complete her Commonwealth Games "trilogy" in Glasgow on a high as she targets a third medal.
The Caldicot light-middleweight, who turned 30 on the day she carried the Welsh flag at the opening ceremony in Glasgow, says she has "more fire than ever" as she aims to repeat her gold medal in Birmingham.

Former India wicketkeeper-batter Farokh Engineer believes teenage sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has already done enough to earn an ODI call-up and wants the 15-year-old to open alongside Rohit Sharma ahead of the 2027 World Cup.
Engineer feels India should reshuffle their batting order by moving Shubman Gill to No. 4, allowing Sooryavanshi to partner Rohit at the top while Virat Kohli slots in at No. 3.
"The ideal situation is Shubman Gill and Vaibhav Sooryavanshi. Gill is a class player. Gill, I think, is the best batsman in the team now. So, Gill should come at four," Engineer told PTI.
The former India star said the combination of a right-handed Rohit and left-handed Sooryavanshi would provide the ideal balance in ODI cricket.
"Gill is not a guy who lifts the ball. So, a left-right combination would be ideal in ODIs. So, if Rohit is playing, and I think he should be playing, let him open with Sooryavanshi.
"A batsman like him (Sooryavanshi) is much better at opening because he finds bigger gaps in the field. Virat Kohli can come third. Gill can come fourth and then we've got a solid batting line-up," he said.
Engineer's remarks come after Sooryavanshi enjoyed a breakthrough T20I series against Zimbabwe. The youngster finished as the leading run-scorer with 151 runs, including two half-centuries, and was named Player of the Series as India completed a 3-0 clean sweep.
According to Engineer, those performances are enough to fast-track the teenager into India's 50-over plans.
"This is probably the right time to draft Sooryavanshi into India's ODI side. I don't know why people distinguish so much between ODI and T20 because for me, a half-volley is a half-volley. He's been getting runs and he's got the confidence to open the innings.
"He'll win more matches for you than lose you. When he gives a start like that, the other players can have time to consolidate the innings and put on a big score," Engineer noted.
While Sooryavanshi struggled during India's T20I tour of England earlier this month, the Zimbabwe series showcased his ability to adapt. He produced a measured 81 off 49 ***** in the final T20I on a slow Harare surface after blasting a rapid half-century in the series opener.
The teenager has also shown areas that still require improvement, including handling short-pitched bowling, adapting quickly to overseas conditions and refining his shot selection. However, Engineer urged India not to overburden the youngster with technical changes, insisting his natural game is what makes him special.
"Anything which is slightly short of length, in Sooryavanshi's curve, is going to go for a six. He learned from his mistakes, he has learned to curb himself. But don't try to over-coach him. He's not from the MCC book of manual, which is completely out of date.
"He's a genius. Nor was Viv Richards. Viv was the best batsman I've ever seen play. But persevere with Sooryavanshi. He'll be a tremendous ***** et for In

On the back of promising performances in pre-season friendlies against York City and Liverpool, Régis Le Bris is going to have a midfield selection dilemma ahead of the new season.
Granit Xhaka, Habib Diarra and Noah Sadiki all showed their class at the World Cup, with Sadiki and Diarra standing out — Diarra bagging a couple of goals for Senegal and Sadiki shining in DR Congo's defeat to England in the round of sixteen.
Whilst these lads are currently on holiday and enjoying a well-deserved break after successful World Cup campaigns, there's an opportunity afoot for other lads to work their way into Le Bris' thinking going into the opening game against Ipswich Town.
Chris Rigg and Enzo Le Fée have been deployed in central positions during our two pre-season fixtures and have been standout performers. Rigg has clearly been on a fitness programme over the summer and has come back a couple of pounds stronger, whereas Le Fée has picked up where he left off at the back end of last season, scoring a fantastic solo strike against Liverpool on Saturday night.
The few games that we played last season without Xhaka in the starting eleven showed just how much we struggle without him, and although he's a certainty to be the first name on the team sheet most weeks, he's coming into the twilight of his career and will not be able to play up to potentially fifty games if we have a successful season.

On this day in 2023, Eliezer Mayenda completed his transfer to Sunderland from Sochaux for a fee believed to be just over €1 million. The French third-tier side retained a 25% sell-on clause. Mayenda had turned 18 in May and signed a five-year contract.
He made his senior debut for Sochaux in a cup game, coming on as a substitute at the age of 16 years, seven months and 10 days – the youngest player ever to do so. Five days later, on 2 February, he became the youngest player ever to sign a professional contract with the club.
Mayenda was loaned by Sunderland to Hibernian in February 2024, where he remained for the rest of the season. Upon his return to Wearside, he was reintegrated into the first-team squad ahead of the start of the 2024 – 25 Championship campaign.
His first Sunderland goals came in the second Championship match of the season, a 4 – 0 victory over Sheffield Wednesday, where he netted twice. The big man went on to make 37 appearances during the Championship campaign, as well as featuring in all three play-off matches. Having scored eight goals during the regular season, he then, of course, scored twice in the play-offs, including Sunderland's opening goal in the final. It's not a stretch to say that, without his contributions, Sunderland would not have been promoted to the Premier League in May 2025.
As the Premier League season got underway following promotion, Mayenda scored Sunderland's first goal of the campaign in the 3 – 0 opening-day victory over West Ham. Despite that flying start, opportunities became harder to come by. He made a further 19 league appearances, scoring just one more goal.

Big Ten Media Days are one of the most anticipated offseason events of the summer, setting the stage for what should be a thrilling 2026 season packed with massive storylines across the conference.
The Big Ten has crowned a different national champion in each of the past three seasons, meaning anyone in the conference has a chance to win it all in 2026.
Oregon enters the year as a popular pick to break through after four stellar seasons under head coach Dan Lanning. However, defending national champion Indiana returns off one of the most stunning turnarounds in recent memory and now has to prove it wasn't a one-year fluke.
Ohio State, meanwhile, opens the season as the nation's top-ranked team in several projection models despite a major defensive overhaul, and USC's revamped defense under new coordinator Gary Patterson could make the Trojans one of the conference's most intriguing wild cards.

Mexico's U-20 national team earned its second victory in the CONCACAF Under-20 Championship. But despite the win, it wasn't all rosy.
Juan Liceaga, goalkeeper for El Tri, was involved in one of the most violent challenges of the tournament when, in an attempt to cut out the ball, he ended up hitting his opponent in the head and digging his studs in.
The Mexican player was shown a straight red card and will not be able to take part in the match against Guatemala next July 30.

LeBron James or Giannis Antetokounmpo might have joined the New York Knicks this summer if the 2026 NBA Finals hadn't ended the way they did.
The Knicks have returned to the NBA's mountaintop after an arduous 53-year journey, where the franchise went from being called one of the worst in the NBA to now proving they're the best.
If the 2025-26 season didn't end in New York's favor, the summer of 2026 might have seen them make major additions to take the final step towards a championship.
Sam Quinn pointed out that both James and Antetokounmpo had to settle for their No. 2 choices, with LeBron heading to the 76ers and Giannis heading to the Heat.
"The two most famous players that moved this offseason, LeBron and Giannis, both wanted to be Knicks and are now playing for their backup teams because the Knicks won the ***** le."

The Cincinnati Bengals made major changes to their defense this offseason, going big with the Dexter Lawrence blockbuster trade and spending money on some solid free-agent starters.
By doing so, the Bengals acknowledged their plan to build even an average defense through the draft didn't work. Now, they believe they have a good enough defense to seize on quarterback Joe Burrow's window to get them back to the Super Bowl. Everyone knows what to expect from Burrow and the Bengals' offense, which returns all of its starters.
That means all eyes are on the defense as the Bengals open training camp on July 29. Here are the players and position battles to keep a close watch on during training camp:
The pressure is on the Bengals' 2025 first-round draft pick after a disappointing rookie season, which was doomed from the get-go when Stewart made a boneheaded decision to hold out over language in his contract. Stewart was already a risky, boom-or-bust pick that many teams passed on, because of his inability to consistently get to the quarterback in college. Now it's time to find out if the Bengals are going to get any production out of him – or whether player personnel director Duke Tobin whiffed on another defensive pick.
Stewart is a major x-factor on an overhauled defensive line, because his performance this season will determine if the Bengals have to spend more money or draft capital on edge rusher again next year. The Bengals didn't pick up defensive end Myles Murphy's fifth-year option for 2027, in part, because they want to see if Stewart can replace him.

There have been valid questions about LeBron James' fit with the Philadelphia 76ers, as the team is stacked with Tyrese Maxey, Jaylen Brown, Joel Embiid, and even VJ Edgecombe, whom he'll share the ball with this upcoming season.
However, long-time NBA ***** yst Skip Bayless strongly believes that James could be what the doctor ordered for the 76ers, given the 41-year-old's credentials and overall fitness.
"People around the NBA questioning LeBron's fit in Philly? HE'S A PERFECT FIT. They needed a pure PG, an orchestrator, and that's what LeBron does best. Tyrese has averaged 6 ***** ists last 3 years. LBJ will average 11ish and lead league in ***** ists," Bayless posted on X.
MORE: LeBron James works out with Tyrese Maxey after 76ers move
To Bayless' point, ESPN's Shams Charania recently reported that the 76ers are planning to play James at point guard. When he last did it in one full season in 2019-20, the four-time league MVP averaged 25.3 points, 7.8 rebounds, 10.2 ***** ists, and 1.2 steals on 49.3 percent shooting from the field across 67 regular-season games.

It wasn't a pretty opening to the series, but the Yankees found their way Monday night in Chicago. Max Fried struggled mightily in his second start returning from the IL, putting them in a big hole early with an offense that hasn't been ****** e to exploding lately, but a pair of big innings turned this game from a deficit to a 9-5 win.
Last time out Fried was extremely sharp, going five strong despite a low pitch limit blanking the Pirates with just a single hit and walk going against him. Randal Grichuk greeted him with a leadoff double, and the wheels fell off from there. Munetaka Murakami followed up with a single to put runners on the corners, and after Fried struck out Miguel Vargas for the first out of the inning Colson Montgomery ripped a single to the right side that Jazz Chisholm Jr. barely couldn't corral scoring Grichuk. Chase Meridoth was up next and lifted a sacrifice fly to bring in a second run, and then Braden Montgomery lined a triple over the head of a diving Max Schuemann that brought in a third. It looked like Schuemann might've gotten messed up leaping for the ball, which would've complicated things for a Yankees team that is already down two of their starting outfielders, but thankfully he shook it off and stayed in the game.
View Link
Fried calmed down from there, working two straight clean frames, but the Yankee offense wasn't getting anything going at first against the rookie Noah Schultz, who entered the game with a gaudy 6.04 ERA. Paul Goldschmidt managed a two-out single in the top of the first, but the lineup otherwise went down in order the first time through. The fourth inning finally saw them break though, starting off with a pair of walks from Ben Rice and Goldschmidt to set up a rally. Jasson Domínguez singled to left but it was hit hard enough to prevent a run from coming in, bringing Anthony Volpe up with the bases loaded and no outs. Volpe managed to bring in a run, hitting a soft grounder to short that Luisangel Acuña was just barely able to scoop up and throw to first in time to convert an out from the play.
That would be all for Schultz, as the White Sox went to their 'pen and brought in Chris Murphy. The tide was turning though, and Chisholm provided the big blow of the inning with a double out to center to tie the game at three. Chisholm then stole third base on a head's up play noticing that the catcher was lazily flicking the ball back to the pitcher, and José Caballero walked to pass the baton over to Spencer Jones. Jones managed to convert, fighting off three foul ****** before grounding a ball in front of Caballero who was running on the pitch to prevent a double play opportunity and give the Yankees a 4-3 lead.

Dwyane Wade and LeBron James are good friends and played alongside each other for four NBA seasons with the Miami Heat. Their partnership helped established the retired guard as one of the best players in franchise history. While many may think that the superstar forward is his favorite teammate, he instead revealed that it's Udonis Haslem
The three-time champion was Candace Parker's guest on her "Post Moves with Candace Parker & Aliyah Boston" podcast on Monday. He explained that Haslem always had his back on the court.

"It's always gonna be Udonis Haslem," Wade said. "Anybody that is going to protect you on the basketball floor, that's going to be your favorite teammate. Because I used to pop my s*** a little bit and I didn't know if I really wanted to fight.
"After we fake tough guys, we ain't grow up fighting. We was hooping. So UD always came to my defense. So that's always going to be my favorite team. I love you, boy."

Vita Vea has been with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for eight seasons. But on the eve of his ninth training camp with the team, why is the two-time Pro Bowl defensive tackle requesting a trade?
Online rumors were quick to point the finger at Buccaneers head coach Todd Bowles, but a team insider was quick to dispel that narrative.
The 31-year-old is heading into the final year of his contract with the Buccaneers, but is set to have a robust cap hit of $22.2 million in 2026. Typically, when stars are heading into a contract year, they're looking to secure a long-term extension. After all, that's what Baker Mayfield has been angling for, but Bucs general manager Jason Licht has yet to strike a deal.
That's the same story here with Vea. Only, rather than try to negotiate, he wants a trade. But is it because of coaching?
According to The Athletic's Buccaneers insider Greg Auman, Vea doesn't have an issue with Bowles. The man simply wants to get paid.

Giannis Antetokounmpo reveals Goran Dragic's importance to his NBA career originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
Giannis Antetokounmpo is happy to now be playing for the Miami Heat. It is a team that he has become familiar with during his time in the NBA, as he has had plenty of duels against the Erik Spoelstra-led team since making his NBA debut in 2013 for the Milwaukee Bucks.
For a long time, Giannis remained loyal to the Bucks, but their recent struggles were the tipping point for the Greek superstar. Now, he will be playing for the Heat with a new jersey number, the #7 that was previously worn by former Heat All-Star Goran Dragic.
As one of the most physically imposing players in the league, Antetokounmpo has worked hard to become one of the strongest players. Despite that, he does have some trouble with injuries from time to time. This has led to him making adjustments to his gear, including wearing his now-iconic shooting sleeve.
Apparently, that decision to wear a sleeve stems from a showdown with the Heat back in the day. The reason he is wearing a shooting sleeve now is because of Dragic, which is a bit poetic, considering Antetokounmpo is the player wearing his old #7 jersey number.

Although a writer from The Athletic recently reported that Stephen Curry and the Golden State Warriors "may no longer be on the same page," another NBA insider sees things differently.
According to Shams Charania of ESPN, he "fully expects" there to be contract extension negotiations between Curry and the Warriors this summer. Charania also noted, "They (Golden State) are going to give him one (contract extension) if he wants one."
Curry is eligible to add one or two seasons on to his current deal. That said, if Curry doesn't extend with the team this summer, his relationship with the front office will be worth monitoring, especially if the team isn't able to improve on a 37-45 record that saw them finish 10th in the Western Conference.

Tadej Pogacar won a record-equalling fifth Tour de France over the weekend. What better time, then, to read this 2013 memoir by a cyclist who won precisely nothing?
Cycling teams are built around ensuring one rider wins; teammates ride in front of the star for slipstreaming, set the pace on climbs, or even give up bike parts in case of a breakdown. Wegelius was one such "domestique." It is a "must-read," says the biking blog Velominati, and "it is a pleasure to read a book about modern cycling that is not a drug exposé." The Seattle Seahawks are set to move on from one of their running backs.
ESPN's Brady Henderson reported on Monday that the Seahawks are planning to waive fourth-year back Kenny McIntosh, who is currently on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list after suffering a torn ACL last training camp.
The Seahawks confirmed Henderson's report shortly thereafter. McIntosh was not immediately replaced, so the Seahawks will enter Tuesday with an open roster spot.
It's an unfortunate situation for the national champion from Georgia, who injured his knee during 2023 training camp and barely played as a rookie. In 2024, McIntosh played in every game but predominantly on special teams. When he did get involved in the offense, rushed for 172 yards on 31 carries and caught three passes for 22 yards in limited playing time. He also was part of Seattle's kick return rotation.
With the Seahawks drafting Jadarian Price in the first round and signing Emanuel Wilson in free agency, it was always going to be difficult for McIntosh to make the roster this season. George Holani, who lost out to McIntosh for a roster spot in 2024, was able to secure a spot after McIntosh's injury and has the inside track to have an increased role in the offense. Factor in the eventual return of Zach Charbonnet from his own ACL tear, and there just wasn't much of a realistic path for McIntosh to make the 53-man roster.

LeBron James' newest goal could help him make NBA history with the Philadelphia 76ers originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
Across the 23 years he has played in the NBA, LeBron James has set and shattered plenty of historical records. He has earned accolades for being the youngest to do so and the oldest to do so. It is a tremendous testament to his impressive longevity and unmatched talent.
Now that he is entering his 24th season, James has taken on a new challenge, and that is playing for the Philadelphia 76ers. This is a huge test for James because his intention is to win a championship with Philly, a team that has not won the championship since 1983, a year before he was even born.
As one of the league's greatest-ever players, LeBron is a phenomenon. He always finds ways to make a winning impact for his team, which he has done for every team he has played for. He had two championships with the Miami Heat, one with his Cleveland Cavaliers, and one with the Los Angeles Lakers.
Only four players in NBA history have won championships with NBA teams, which are Robert Horry, John Salley, LeBron, and his former teammate, Danny Green. With this move to Philly, James is ready to make history yet again.
