LYTHAM ST. ANNES, ENGLAND – Nelly Korda put a 4-iron into the bag for the first time at a British Open this week at Royal Lytham. There won't be many drivers off the tee for her at this bunkerfest. Maybe four or five, tops, she said.
Like many, Korda has a love/hate relationship with links golf, depending on the day and the bounces. It doesn't help that it's the fifth major of the year in a packed summer schedule. She typically finds herself more on edge at this point in the season.
"I would say with it being kind of in a condensed part of our schedule, I get pretty agitated," she said, "and I think what I learned is I just need to take a step back and hit the reset ***** on sometimes."
Korda comes into the season's final major at the 2026 AIG Women's British Open with a chance to both qualify for the LPGA Hall of Fame and complete the career grand slam. After a missed cut at the Amundi Evian Championship, her first time missing a weekend in two years, the world No. 1 took some time off in Prague and then headed to the ISPS Handa Scottish Open, where she finished on a high note to jump into the top 20.

Golf architect Kyle Phillips has broken ground on the course at the private Pandion Club in Estero, Florida. The new layout, intended to invoke the heathland courses of England with Lowcountry influences, is being built on the site of the former Old Corkscrew Golf Club that was closed earlier this year.
Phillips plans a par-71 course for Pandion Club, stretching to 7,220 with firm and fast playing conditions and a premium on strategic shotmaking. The new layout is scheduled to open in 2027 with membership capped at 280. The golf-only club will include a Lowcountry-inspired clubhouse and expansive practice facilities. The name Pandion is inspired by Pandion haliaetus, aka osprey.
The layout features sandy terrain that should promote Phillips' goals. Having built the top-ranked Kingsbarns Golf Links and Dundonald Links in Scotland and having studied courses around the world, Phillips said that heathland courses are situated on inland dunes, "like the ones we have in Florida."
Old Corkscrew and additional surrounding land was purchased in 2022 by The Hoffmann Family of Companies for $14.5 million, according to property records reported by the Naples Daily News. The Hoffmans purchased the Cottages at Old Corkscrew Golf Club for $4.5 million in a separate transaction. The Hoffmanns also own Old Collier Golf Club in Naples, as well as the Pittsburgh Penguins and Florida Everblades.
"Everything we do at Hoffmann Family of Companies, we want to provide a unique, best-in-class experience for our guests, and Pandion is going to be no exception" Geoff Hoffmann, CEO of HF Companies' private equity arm, said in a media release announcing the start of construction. "From the moment that you drive through our gates, you will know that you have arrived somewhere special. You are going to feel like you are in nature, and this is an escape. We knew that his experience presented an opportunity to preserve the natural landscape that was embedded on the site, and that's something we are going to build around."

Former Dallas Cowboys quarterback and current CBS Sports broadcaster Tony Romo was arrested in Milwaukee County, Wisconsin on the night of July 23, according to police records obtained by USA TODAY Sports.
According to the records, Romo is accused of operating a vehicle while under the influence (OWI). Romo was stopped going southbound on I-43 and "performed poorly on SFSTs (standard field sobriety tests)." On July 28, new details came to light after bodycam footage surfaced.
Obtained by TMZ, the footage showed what took place during the stop and led to his arrest. Romo explained he was heading to his grandparents' home at the time of the stop, which occurred after the quarterback left a golf tournament nearby.

Long before LeBron James bid farewell to the Los Angeles Lakers this offseason, the transition of power within the franchise began. Luka Dončić, whom the Lakers famously traded for in February 2025, became their crown jewel.

In fact, according to ESPN's Dave McMenamin, Dončić is hosting the entire Lakers roster in Slovenia for a four-day minicamp in August. The trip will feature workouts, golf, bonding and touring Ljubljana, the capital city of Slovenia, McMenamin reported on Wednesday.
Dončić, a six-time All-NBA first teamer, is preparing for a pivotal season in his already prolific career. He played his way into the MVP conversation last season before a Grade 2 left hamstring strain effectively ended his campaign prematurely. He experienced that setback in early April and didn't make it back for the Lakers' postseason run, which came to a screeching halt in the Western Conference semifinals.

The Twin Cities injected some excitement into the late season last week, and there was good news for former Bulldogs to boot. First, Tour rookie (I mean like 24 days since turning pro) Jackson Koivun won the 3M Open in his 3rd start as a professional and 7th time playing a Tour event (he played several as an amateur and based on his NCAA Championship). He beat everyone not named Scottie Scheffler by 5 shots, and held off the world #1 in the process. His incredible collegiate career at Auburn was not a fluke, unlike their academic credentials.
For the boys in red & black: Keith Mitchell finished in a tie for 44th, so his position in the FedEx Cup points did not change. Chris Kirk got to 12 under par, and the T31 finish ***** ped him up 3 spots to 143rd in the FedEx. But he'll need a VERY high finish the next two weeks to get into the post-season. David Thompson got a much-needed top 10 (T7) and that moved him up to 93rd position – still outside the top 70 but do now he has an outside chance to advance.
And Brian Harman played the final day alongside Scottie Scheffler and for the most part kept up with him. Harman shot a Sunday 65 and got a T3 – and those points ***** ped him from the dangerous 74th spot to a more comfortable 62nd spot. So let's see what's on tap this week.

As caddy for his daughter, Jeff Woods provided sound advice throughout last weekend's Twin City tournament. Better yet, he provided frequent updates for inquiring minds wanting to know how things were going.
"He was texting all the updates to my family and friends," Mary Woods said. "He's a great caddy."
With Dad on the bag, Mary won her first Twin City ******* le in three tries by beating Ashley Wells on the first playoff hole Sunday at the Champaign Country Club. The 26-year-old University of Illinois graduate, who was a News-Gazette All-Area Girls' Soccer performer at Centennial (Class of '18), also played basketball and tennis in high school.
Golf? She rediscovered her love of a sport she quit playing in middle school when COVID-19 hit.

Tobacco Road, built by the late Mike Strantz and one of the most dramatically shaped golf courses found anywhere, has a new sibling. The Matchbox – a 12-hole, par-3 course that embraces the ethos established by Strantz on the property near Pinehurst – opens August 1 in Sanford, North Carolina.
The new short course is the result of a partnership between Carlton/Marshall Golf Design and Mike White, one of the shapers who worked for Strantz on the full-size Tobacco Road layout that opened in 1998 in the Sandhills.
"There's a direct line from our past to the present – and we believe The Matchbox will become a must-play experience in its own right," Mark Stewart, whose family opened Tobacco Road, said in a media release announcing the opening of The Matchbox.
The Matchbox was constructed in just six months near Nos. 12 and 13 of the big course. Holes range from 40 to 105 yards and feature synthetic turf blended into the natural landscape, a choice that allowed the builders to preserve more trees instead of clearing room for grass to grow. The choice of synthetic turf also avoided the installation of irrigation.
Guests can book tee times from the opening date through December.

LYTHAM ST. ANNES, England — Their journeys to professional golf couldn't have been more contrasting. Lydia Ko was a child prodigy; Ryan Fox was a late bloomer who didn't turn pro until age 25. Ko rose to fame when, at 14, she became the youngest winner of a tour event and, at 18, became the youngest major winner. Fox was 39 when he won his first major at the British Open two weeks ago.
But they are united by their homeland of New Zealand and by shared experiences in team rooms. Those moments began with pranks at the 2010 World Amateur Teams Championships. These days, the New Zealand bonding sessions play out on a far bigger stage—at the past three Olympic games.
"We went to World Team Ams when I was 14," Ko recalled on Wednesday at the AIG Women's British Open at Royal Lytham. "I don't know if I'm allowed to say it, but he may or may not have tricked me to think my ***** e glass was—I thought it was my ***** e glass—but it was red wine. He's always been the same."
Which is why, two weeks ago, Ko was in tears watching from the U.S. as Fox took the British Open by the scruff of the neck with weekend rounds of 62-68 at Royal Birkdale. Fox stole the claret jug from clubhouse leader Cameron Young with three-under performance in his final six holes, including a walk-off birdie on the 72nd to win by one.
"I was on the West Coast in the U.S. so there was quite a bit of time difference," Ko said Wednesday. "I went to go work out and everywhere I went I was like, 'Please turn on the Open.' It ended up not working on the TV, so I had my trainer turn it on my cell phone and I [also] had it on my cell phone. I can't remember my work out at all."

Darcey Harry says she has come to "hate" calls for patience during what has been a more challenging second season on the Ladies European Tour (LET).
After her successes as a rookie in 2025, Wales' number one golfer hopes this week's return to the Women's Open could spark an upturn in form.
Harry has a place in the field at Royal Lytham & St Annes courtesy of her performances last year, when she finished a lofty 14th in the LET order of merit despite the fact she had only just turned professional.
But 2026 has been more of a struggle for the 23-year-old from Dinas Powys, who has missed the cut in three of her past four tournaments and was forced to withdraw from the other because of injury after only a handful of holes.
"My results are definitely reflecting that it's harder second time around [on tour] because the expectations are just so high," Harry told BBC Sport Wales.

This week marks the eighth and final playing of the PGA Tour's Rocket Classic at Detroit Golf Club.
So, who will join the roster of champions that includes Nate Lashley, Bryson DeChambeau, Cam Davis (twice), Tony Finau, Rickie Fowler and Aldrich Potgieter? We'll know soon enough, before the sun sets on Palmer Park on Sunday.
In the meantime, The Detroit News' so-called experts (loose term) provide their predictions:
Predicting the winner of a 147-player PGA Tour tournament is a near-impossible task, unless Scottie Scheffler, Rory McIlory or prime Tiger Woods is teeing it up. Usually, I like to lean in heavily on the horses-for-courses theory, so I considered the likes of Jake Knapp (tied for fourth course-record 61 last year), Chris Kirk (lost in a playoff last year) and Taylor Moore (the only player with three top-10s here), but the course has been renovated. So I'm going with The Kid, JACKSON KOIVUN, 21, fresh off his first PGA Tour win at the 3M Open. We'll pick him to go back-to-back at 3M and Rocket, like Tony Finau in 2022. If Koivun wins, he'd be the second player to receive a sponsor's exemption into the Rocket (2024), only to win the tournament two years later (Aldrich Potgieter, 2023 exemption and 2025 ****** le).

Charlie Woods got off to a slow start at the Junior PGA Championship on Tuesday.
The 17-year-old son of Tiger Woods shot 3-over 75 at Fields Ranch East in Frisco, Texas in the opening round, seven strokes off the lead and tied for 53rd.
Woods bogeyed the first and fourth holes before making his first birdie of the day at the seventh hole. He made a double bogey at the ninth to tour the front nine in 39. On the back nine, Woods traded birdies at Nos. 15 and 18 with bogeys at Nos. 14 and 16.
Woods finished T-9 at the Junior PGA last year at Purdue University's Birck Boilermaker Golf Complex, one of the few tournaments his famous father never won. Tiger finished runner-up in 1990.
Conditions were difficult on Tuesday, including 100-degree heat, at the course that will play host to the PGA Championship next May. Only 16 players in the field of 156 managed to break par on a difficult day in which 29 players shot 80 or higher. No one played better than Kailer Stone of Alameda, Calif., who birdied three of the final four holes to shoot 4-under 68 and claim the lead.

Just days after news broke that Romo had been arrested in Milwaukee on suspicion of operating while under the influence, newly released body camera footage has provided a closer look at the traffic stop that led to his arrest. The video offers additional context surrounding the incident and has quickly become a major topic of conversation.

According to footage obtained by TMZ, officers pulled Romo over on Interstate 43 before questioning him about where he had been traveling.

The Milwaukee County Sheriff's Office has released a series of videos of NFL broadcaster and former Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo's arrest in Milwaukee last week.
The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel filed a public records request for the footage shortly after he was taken into custody on July 23.
In the videos, captured on body cameras, the Burlington-reared Romo, 46, appears compliant, though at points seemed confused or unable to hear instructions deputies gave him during their OWI investigation.
A sheriff's office arrest report says Romo was pulled over driving southbound on Interstate 43 in Milwaukee shortly after 6 p.m. because of a bad lane change.
The deputy approached the driver's side of the black Jeep. Romo, who was alone in the vehicle, told the deputy he was coming from a golf tournament, the Wisconsin Amateur Championship golf event in West Bend, and heading to his grandparents' home.

Charlie Woods of Jupiter turned in one of his strongest performances in competitive golf last year in the Junior PGA Championship at the Purdue University course in West Lafayette, Ind., tying for ninth after starting the fourth round in second place.
Would Woods repeat that performance in the 2026 Junior PGA, being played at the Fields Ranch at PGA Frisco, the home course of the PGA of America?
If so, Woods will need to bounce back fast in the second round.
Woods bogeyed his first and fourth holes at the East Course, followed his first birdie of the day at No. 7 with a double-bogey at the ninth hole, then went through a roller-coaster final four holes to finish in a tie for 53rd at 3-over 75, seven shots behind leader Kailer Stone of Alameda, Calif.
Woods made another bogey at No. 14 (his second bogey on a par-5 hole), then birdied No. 15. He finished with a bogey at the 16th hole, a par at No. 17 and a closing birdie at No. 18.

For a sport with a reputation for moving slowly, golf always seems to be in a hurry to appoint the next big star.
Jackson Koivun is next on the list and certainly worth watching.
It's not just because he won a PGA Tour event — which included the No. 1 player in the world — just two months after leaving college. Remember, it was only two years ago when Nick Dunlap won The American Express (Scottie Scheffler played that one, too) while he was a sophomore at Alabama.
Different about Koivun is that he carried the expectations of being the No. 1 amateur in the world. He won six times in college, swept all the awards as the best player, led Auburn to another NCAA ****** le and last year had three straight top-10 finishes in PGA Tour events without ever looking as though the moment was too big.
And then in his third start as a pro, Koivun shot 61 on Saturday in the 3M Open after Scheffler had set the target, and then held off Scheffler and everyone else with a 66 and a three-shot victory.

Brooks Koepka will not be playing in Detroit after all.
The PGA Tour announced on Tuesday, July 28, the five-time major champion has withdrawn from the 2026 Rocket Classic after committing to the tournament on July 13.
Ben Silverman will take his place in the 147-player field that is now finalized (see full field and tee times below).
Koepka has had a unique schedule this year for a player as accomplished as himself. He had to earn his status back on the PGA Tour after leaving for the start-up rival LIV Golf from 2022-25.
Part of that has included stops at tournaments he has not typically played in to try and earn FedEx Cup points, such as playing the final Rocket Classic in Detroit, where he had never played before.

LIV Golf Michigan, the league's $40 million team championship, is set to be officially canceled after the status of the 2026 season finale had come under serious doubt last week, sources tell Front Office Sports.
An official announcement on the cancellation is expected on Wednesday, according to golf media personality Tom Hobbs, who runs the Flushing It social accounts, which first reported the news.
LIV Michigan had been scheduled for Aug. 27-30 in suburban Detroit at The Cardinal at Saint John's Resort, which is owned by the Pulte Family Charitable Foundation. Spokespeople for LIV Golf, Saint John's Resort, and the Pulte Family Charitable Foundation have yet to respond to a request for comment from FOS.
As of early Tuesday afternoon, there had not been any internal announcement or memo to players about the cancelation, one source told FOS. But the news does not come as a surprise to anyone inside or around LIV.
The team championship was one of two events FOS sources had pegged last month as being at the most risk of being canceled as a sentiment grew among those in and around LIV that the funding from the Saudi PIF—which has announced it would stop funding LIV after this season—could dry up even earlier than expected. The other event at most risk, per sources, was LIV's regular-season finale in Indianapolis Aug. 20-23, but that is currently scheduled to still take place.

Brooks Koepka has withdrawn from the 2026 Rocket Classic. No reason was given for the WD.
Koepka, who tied for 28th at the Open Championship, is 84th in the FexEx Cup standings, so if he wants to make the postseason, he'll need a strong finish at next week's Wyndham Championship.
This season, his best finish was a T-9 at his hometown Cognizant Classic in the Palm Beaches. He also placed T-12 at the Masters.
His WD isn't such bad news for three other players, however. Because Koepka was listed in the field Monday, Lanto Griffin and Justin Lower were given spots to round out groupings, AKA the Koepka rule. In every PGA Tour event he has played this year, two players were added to the field on Monday, so he wasn't taking away starts from anyone. And then with his WD, Ben Silverman gets his spot at Detroit Golf Club in Michigan.
Perhaps waiting until Tuesday to withdraw was planned, but it's an unfortunate situation for Koepka, who has only one more chance to make the postseason.

LIV Golf's team finale has reportedly been canceled.
The report by Flushing It comes a couple weeks after Cleeks captain Martin Kaymer told Today's Golfer that LIV's team championship, scheduled for Aug. 27-30 at The Cardinal at Saint John's in Plymouth, Michigan, was "highly unlikely" to take place.
Flushing It, which previously cited several contractors whose travel arrangements for the event had been canceled, said that an official announcement was expected from LIV on Wednesday.
LIV Michigan was supposed to offer a $40 million purse, down from $50 million last year, with $11.2 million going to the winning team. But PIF's funding, originally announced to run through this year, has begun to dry up earlier than anticipated, according to Front Office Sports, which quoted one LIV source as saying last month, "I don't think they'll ever get to Michigan."
The Detroit News reported last week that no infrastructure had been built at The Cardinal, another ominous sign for LIV Michigan, which would become the second LIV tournament to be scrapped this year.

"I turned around to him I was like, oh, my gosh, like we have like played so well and like had so much banter in this round. Imagine someone recording this. It would be hilarious. He was like, yeah, and I was like, maybe we should start our own YouTube channel like joking around.
"I actually never watched YouTube golf, just to let you guys know. So then we've just thought, screw this, go ahead with it, and, yeah, launched it the other day."

Charlotte Naughton's golfing career was already on an upward trajectory, but the teenager will hit fast forward.
That is because she is preparing to tee up in the AIG Women's Open - the first major of her career.
Still 18, Naughton only secured her spot at Royal Lytham & St Annes this week by virtue of winning the European Ladies Amateur Championship in Sweden on Sunday.
Now the young amateur heads to Lancashire to take her place alongside Charley Hull, Nelly Korda and the other star names of women's golf when the tournament begins on Thursday.
"I've always dreamed about it," Naughton told BBC Radio Newcastle. "I never really knew it would come this quick but I'm so happy and so proud to be able to play."

After his fifth runner-up finish of the season, Scheffler's lead on No. 2 has strengthened even more. Meanwhile, LIV Golf's Lucas Herbert has moved into the top 50 after his record victory in the UK.
The OWGR system is calculated by awarding points from eligible tours and events to participating players over a rolling two-year period. Players are ranked weekly based on the amount of points they earn divided by the number of events they played in to reach an average total. Points hold their full value for a 13-week period and are then reduced in equal decrements. The current ranking for the Top 50 golfers in the world appear below.

Golf technology's rapid advancement has seen a jaw-dropping increase in distance from modern professional golfers. To counteract this, the sport is preparing a golf ball rollback to prevent players from hitting the ball quite as far.
Many current players and legends alike, such as Rory McIlroy, Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods, are in favor of this move, although there are questions being raised about how effective the new golf ball will be at reducing distance.
Meanwhile, DeChambeau has argued that fans want to see players hit the ball as far as humanly possible. He says being able to drive the ball over 350 yards is a feat of human accomplishment, and it's good for the game.
But what's happening on the PGA Tour this season proves that DeChambeau's take on this is complete nonsense.

Detroit — First, off came the shoes.
Then, off came the gloves — well, at least, what passes for that in the mostly congenial world of professional golf.
Longtime PGA Tour player Lucas Glover expressed annoyance with a fellow pro — or pros — on Monday when he clarified the strange incident that happened during Sunday's final round of the 3M Open in Minnesota. After making a birdie putt on the 10th hole at TPC Twin Cities, Glover turned around, walked back to the collar of the green and removed his golf shoes before walking back to the hole to retrieve his ball.
Glover then walked off the green in his socks, carrying his shoes. The clip of the incident quickly went viral.
In a statement Monday, Glover explained his reasoning. It turns out, a player — or players — had complained to a tournament official that Glover's metal spikes were causing damage to the greens, around the holes.

Detroit — The stars are set to take their swings at the Rocket Classic.
Several local sports celebrities will play alongside PGA Tour golfers at Detroit Golf Club during Wednesday's annual pro-am tournament, which is open to the public and free for fans.
Among the celebs scheduled to play are Lions legends Barry Sanders and Calvin Johnson, new Michigan head football coach Kyle Whittingham, former Michigan State basketball greats-turned-broadcasters Greg Kelser and Steve Smith, current Red Wing Alex DeBrincat, former Lion Joique Bell and Oakland head men's basketball coach Greg Kampe.
There might be more celebs participating, but those are the ones Rocket officials have publicized. Notably, Red Wings captain (for now) Dylan Larkin's name isn't on the list. He's played in previous pro-ams, including last year's. Larkin hasn't spoken publicly since requesting a trade earlier this offseason.
During the pro-am, four amateur golfers team up with a PGA Tour professional in a handicapped best-ball tournament. Each team gets ***** igned two PGA Tour players, with each of the pros playing nine holes. It's a pretty casual setting for the pros and celebs, and one of the best times for fans to score autographs during Rocket Classic week.
