Detroit — Seven down, one more to go.
This week marks the eighth and final playing of the PGA Tour's Rocket Classic at Detroit Golf Club.
So, who will join the roster of champions that includes Nate Lashley, Bryson DeChambeau, Cam Davis (twice), Tony Finau, Rickie Fowler and Aldrich Potgieter? We'll know soon enough, before the sun sets on Palmer Park on Sunday.
In the meantime, The Detroit News' so-called experts (loose term) provide their predictions:
Predicting the winner of a 147-player PGA Tour tournament is a near-impossible task, unless Scottie Scheffler, Rory McIlory or prime Tiger Woods is teeing it up. Usually, I like to lean in heavily on the horses-for-courses theory, so I considered the likes of Jake Knapp (tied for fourth course-record 61 last year), Chris Kirk (lost in a playoff last year) and Taylor Moore (the only player with three top-10s here), but the course has been renovated. So I'm going with The Kid, JACKSON KOIVUN, 21, fresh off his first PGA Tour win at the 3M Open. We'll pick him to go back-to-back at 3M and Rocket, like Tony Finau in 2022. If Koivun wins, he'd be the second player to receive a sponsor's exemption into the Rocket (2024), only to win the tournament two years later (Aldrich Potgieter, 2023 exemption and 2025 ****** le).

For a sport with a reputation for moving slowly, golf always seems to be in a hurry to appoint the next big star.
Jackson Koivun is next on the list and certainly worth watching.
It's not just because he won a PGA Tour event — which included the No. 1 player in the world — just two months after leaving college. Remember, it was only two years ago when Nick Dunlap won The American Express (Scottie Scheffler played that one, too) while he was a sophomore at Alabama.
Different about Koivun is that he carried the expectations of being the No. 1 amateur in the world. He won six times in college, swept all the awards as the best player, led Auburn to another NCAA ****** le and last year had three straight top-10 finishes in PGA Tour events without ever looking as though the moment was too big.
And then in his third start as a pro, Koivun shot 61 on Saturday in the 3M Open after Scheffler had set the target, and then held off Scheffler and everyone else with a 66 and a three-shot victory.

A beloved player amongst the Detroit Tigers players, coaches and fanbase had to make way for another on Tuesday, July 28.
The Tigers reinstated shortstop/center fielder Javier Báez from the 60-day injured list ahead of Tuesday's game against the Baltimore Orioles. Detroit had to clear a roster spot on both the 26-man and 40-man roster since Báez was removed when he was placed on the 60-day list in June.
On Monday night following an 8-5 loss to the Orioles, manager A.J. Hinch and president of baseball operations Scott Harris sat down with backup catcher Jake Rogers and let him know he would be designated for ***** ignment.
Rogers, 31, has been a member of the Tigers' organization since he came over in the trade package for Justin Verlander from the Houston Astros in 2017. He made his major league debut with Detroit in 2019 and proceeded to appear in 362 games across six different seasons.
"Jake has been here as long as I have been here," Hinch said. "Scott, Jake and I met last night and did everything to walk down memory lane to just explain the timing and how decisions get made."

The writing has been on the wall at Parkhead for some time. Celtic are ready to listen to offers for Johnny Kenny this summer, with Millwall positioning themselves at the front of the queue. Sky Sports, via The72, confirmed that the Scottish champions won't stand in the striker's way if a decent bid comes in. Alex Neil wants the 23-year-old Republic of Ireland international at The Den, convinced he can hit the ground running straight away in the Championship.
The signing of Colombian attacker Camilo Duran from Qarabag effectively sealed Kenny's fate. Celtic originally paid Sligo Rovers £140,000 for the forward back in January 2022. Alan Nixon reports via his Patreon that a figure around £850,000 should get the deal done now. That represents a tidy profit on a player who never quite nailed down a starting spot.
Millwall aren't alone in their chase. Bolton Wanderers want him back permanently after his impressive loan spell last term. Kenny clicked quickly under Steven Schumacher, bagging six goals in 14 matches to help push Bolton towards promotion from League One before a knee issue cut his campaign short.
Add those figures to his Celtic return, and he managed 12 goals and two ******* ists across 36 total games in 2025/26. Four of those goals came in 22 Scottish Premiership matches for Celtic. Respectable enough for a squad member. Not enough to demand a starting shirt under Martin O'Neill. Publicly, O'Neill has noted that no final decision has been made on the Irishman's long-term future. Behind the scenes, sources suggest breaking into the first team this summer looks like a mountain too steep to climb.
Taking £850,000 for a squad player isn't defeatist. It is basic business. Celtic get a clean exit, pocket a profit, and free up ******* e on the wage bill for O'Neill to reinvest where it matters. Kenny gets the chance to kickstart his career somewhere he will actually play week in, week out.

Tiger Woods went to the top of the PGA Tour career money list when he was runner-up at Torrey Pines on Feb. 13, 2000, and he has stayed there ever since. His last check for finishing last at the 2024 Masters ($44,400) pushed his career earnings to $120,999,166.
Being passed is inevitable and now is in clear view. It's just a matter of who tops him first.
Rory McIlroy, who lost in the quarterfinals of the 2009 Match Play in his PGA Tour debut, is second on the list at $116,446,772. Scottie Scheffler, who cashed his first PGA Tour check in 2018, moved to $116,364,411 with his runner-up finish in the 3M Open.
That leaves both of them just over $4 million away from Woods coming into the lucrative FedEx Cup postseason — $20 million purses at two playoff events, and the Tour Championship with its $40 million bonus pool that now counts as official money.
Scheffler became the third player in history to earn nine figures in their career earlier this year, when he won the American Express. Since then, the world's top-ranked player has finished second five times.

All or nothing. Nothing else matters. Super Bowl or bust. Bold statements like these are as expected from pro athletes as they are cliché. It's a mindset NFL fans demand to hear from their favorite players and it's a mindset that some fans even take on themselves. Some fans might say it out loud so many times they actually believe it.
When Dak Prescott recently said the Dallas Cowboys had Super Bowl expectations, no one batted an eye. Throughout his career, Prescott has led some of the best offenses in the NFL. 2026 is shaping up to be more of the same with Prescott operating at the top of his game and his **** nal of weapons having never looked better.
Yet the Cowboys defense provides some unavoidable cause for concern. They are coming off a season where they were at or near the bottom of the NFL in almost all major categories and they enter 2026 with more than a few major questions left to answer. But coming off a 7-9-1 campaign and having missed the postseason for two consecutive years, how realistic are Super Bowl expectations in 2026?
"It's always been my mindset," Prescott said of his Super Bowl expectations. "It's the one thing I truly love about the Cowboys organization and the fanbase. It's all or nothing."
It's possible Prescott actually believes this but it's far more likely he's saying what he feels he's supposed to say. It's hard to believe anyone outside of maybe the Los Angeles Rams or Seattle Seahawks actually believes this "all or nothing" mantra this season. The investments those two teams made are significant, and based on recent play, the extreme expectations for them are realistic. The Cowboys have neither of those factors working in their favor.

With training camp here, the excitement for football season is about to ramp up to a fever pitch. For the Dallas Cowboys, it's been an offseason where more noise has come from their roster moves, free agent acquisitions, and draft picks than any off the field drama, which is a welcome change for a team that will begin the regular season 973 days removed from their last playoff game appearance.
That playoff game was the now-infamous 48-32 home loss to the Green Bay Packers. The Cowboys and Packers have met just once since that January game in AT&T Stadium, and it was memorable for a whole other host of reasons, ending in a 40-40 tie on Sunday Night Football last season in week four.
The Cowboys and Packers will meet again on Sunday night primetime this season, at Lambeau Field, this time in week six. As we continue our season preview series, Dallas' division rivals are now all behind us, and our focus will shift to some of the potential toughest games on the schedule against either other rivals or expected playoff contenders at large.
Also for the second year in a row, the Cowboys and Packers early season meeting will be marked by a trade between the two sides involving a pass rusher. Last season, it was Kenny Clark coming over to the Cowboys from the Packers (plus some draft picks) in exchange for Micah Parsons, and this year the Cowboys acquired Rashan Gary after seven seasons with the green and gold. With Parsons still rehabbing from a week 15 ACL tear last season against the Broncos, the Cowboys may not be playing against their own former pass rush star this time around. The Packers scored 40 points on the Matt Eberflus defense in 2025; this game will be a very important early comparison point to just how much of a difference new defensive coordinator Christian Parker is making.
Another theme both of these teams will have going into 2026 is the expectation for their all-important QB/HC pairing to prove they are the right men for the jobs. The Packers will go into year four of Jordan Love as the starting quarterback and year eight for Matt LaFleur having lost in the Wild Card round the last two postseasons. For the Cowboys, it will be just year two of Brian Schottenheimer but year 11 for Dak Prescott. There was a point when Love was an up-and-coming quarterback and Prescott was in the midst of the three straight 12 win seasons under Mike McCarthy, and both were seen as potentially battling for supremacy at the position in the NFC, but so far it still hasn't manifested for either.

The OWGR system is calculated by awarding points from eligible tours and events to participating players over a rolling two-year period. Players are ranked weekly based on the amount of points they earn divided by the number of events they played in to reach an average total. Martin O'Neill is in the marketplace for several more major targets, as the squad is in desperate need of refreshment following a close shave in Scottish football last year.
Hearts and Derek McInnes gave the 5IAR Champions a good run for their money, after Tony Bloom's initial involvement at the Tynecastle club, which could have easily been avoided, had proper investment in the playing squad been achieved last summer, as Brendan Rodgers continually pleaded for.
Now reports from Spain have confirmed that the World Cup star will return to pre-season training with the rest of his Real Oviedo teammates this midweek, as the Hoops' hierarchy has yet to strike an agreement with the Segunda Division side for the transfer to proceed. That is another frustrating update for Celtic supporters, but one that we are well used to, unfortunately.

From what we have seen from our new manager, Alfred Johansson, and signings so far there is no reason to believe that we won't finish in the top six. Ideally we can finish fourth again or, at the bare minimum, fifth and hope whoever wins the league also wins the Scottish Cup so we could make back-to-back European campaigns.
Who is the best signing or has he not signed yet and who should it be?
With having only played two games with fans present it is hard to fully say who has been the best addition to the squad so far. By default, I would have to say Martin Moorman after his 25-yard wonder goal that put us ahead last Thursday [against HB Torshavn]. The new players overall seem to have gelled well with the original team, alongside the younger players we have seen come through from the academy. I would still like to see an extra striker and maybe two more defenders come through just to be on the safe side while we try reducing our injury backlog.

Jackson Koivun looked poised beyond his years at the 3M Open.
He led by three shots going into Sunday, but was hunted down by world number one and four-time major winner Scottie Scheffler on the final day.
Koivun admitted he was nervous to see Scheffler's name rising up the leaderboard, but he didn't show it, shooting a final-round 65 to win with relative ease, breaking the tournament scoring record in the process.
The 21-year-old didn't look like someone playing in his third-ever event as a pro. The maturity on display was incredible to see, but it should really come as no surprise to anyone who has followed his career over the past few seasons.

A brain cancer diagnosis could have ended Archie Goodburn's career. Instead, it became the beginning of a story that captivated the Commonwealth Games. He didn't need a medal to win over the crowd. All he had to do was step onto the blocks.
Just two years after being diagnosed with an incurable form of brain cancer, the Scottish swimmer continues to fight battles far beyond the pool. The 25-year-old swimmer, who won the 2023 British Swimming Championships, broke down in tears after finishing seventh in the men's 50m ***** troke final at the 2026 Commonwealth Games.
"Outside the pool I dream of a future where brain cancer isn't the biggest killer of those under 40, where the UK government establishes a brain cancer lead to make that change," he said. "I'd much prefer that change is made, and that dream is completed, than any of my personal goals in the pool because what families and young people are going through out there is really beyond the comprehension of many people out there and certainly harder than anything I've had to do as a world-class sportsman."
If we take a look at his journey, the path for him has been anything but ordinary.
In 2024, Goodburn's Olympic dream took a devastating turn. After weeks of experiencing seizures, numbness down his left side and recurring feelings of déjà vu, the then-22-year-old received a phone call after training that changed everything.

Glasgow hosts a slimmed-down version of the Commonwealth Games as athletes from 74 nations and territories compete for gold in the Scottish city.
Glasgow stepped in after the Australian state of Victoria backed out three years ago due to the cost of hosting the Games.
The 10-sport programme, including six Para sports, will feature athletics, gymnastics, cycling and swimming - and will take place across four Glasgow venues.
The 11,000-spectator Scotstoun Stadium will stage the athletics as well as the biggest home star of the Games, new mile world record holder Josh Kerr.
The Games will be shown live across TNT Sports and HBO Max, rather than on the BBC or terrestrial television.

Daizen Maeda has joined English Premier League side, Ipswich Town, after four-and-a-half years at Celtic.
The 28-year-old ******* anese internationalist made a total of 212 appearances for the Hoops, scoring 79 goals, a tally which began with a debut goal against Hibernian back in January 2022.
And over the course of his time at Celtic, he won five league ******* les, three Scottish Cups and two League Cups.
The most recent of those trophies came last season when he played a key role as Martin O'Neill's side win a league and Scottish Cup double.
He scored nine goals in the last seven games of the campaign, including a spectacular overhead kick in a 3-1 derby win at Paradise and a goal on the last day of the league season against Hearts as the Hoops sealed an incredible double.

Notre Dame football is fairly close to closing out its 2027 recruiting class, with 23 total commitments after Brayden Parks made his verbal on Thursday.
The Irish have an elite class, one that ranks among the best in the nation and could end up being the top overall class. With that said, Notre Dame has the luxury of moving onto the 2028 cycle, one where they already have two commits, safety Andre Jones and kicker Owen Davies.
One of their top targets is Illinois edge rusher Darieon Prescott, a 5-star in the 247Sports Composite, ranking as the No. 18 overall player in the class. On Friday the 6-foot, 6-inch and 220-pound star announced via On3's Hayes Fawcett that he'll be committing on Monday with Notre Dame, Oregon and Texas A&M as his finalists.
Prescott has visited all three schools, as he was in South Bend to see the Irish hosting Purdue. Scanning his social media, it doesn't look like he visited this spring, but he did see the Ducks and Aggies. It's hard to say where he's leaning at the moment, but the hope is that proximity plays a part in Prescott's decision and joins other Illinois players who matriculate to Notre Dame.

Can Michael Kim follow up his second-round 59 to continue separating from the pack at the 2026 3M Open?
The 33-year-old from South Korea put down 12 birdies in his near-record round, shooting up the leaderboard to 14 under. Round 1 leader Ben Kohles enters Round 3 three strokes back, while Chandler Phillips, Michael Brennan and Emiliano Grillo made late pushes to get into contention.
PGA Tour rookie Jackson Koivun continued his impressive start, entering the third round four shots behind Kim. That game will be packed but today's friendly against a lightweight AC Milan side that will be missing multiple top performers, will not be well attended due to the Celtic support once again being frustrated and angry with the club for creating another summer of discontent through their inactivity in transfer market, so far only getting one deal over the line with the £5m signing of Camilo Duran from Qarabag.
That transfer fee has been more than covered by the sale of Luis Palma to Lech Poznan for £3.5m and Maik Nawrocki to RC Lens for £2m. And with Celtic CEO Michael Nicholson in discussions to sign four new players, it looks like the delay could be caused by an instruction to wait for sales of key players like Daizen Maeda and Arne Engels before proceeding with the purchases Martin O'Neill needs this week.
Maeda should compete his move to Ipswich Town today and that could result in Kasper Hogh from Bodo Glimt coming to Celtic early next week, fingers crossed anyway.
Meanwhile Celtic are haggling over a few hundred grand which is frustrating the move for German midfielder Mika Baur with SC Paderborn resisting the latest Celtic lowballing attempt for their player who has already agreed personal terms with the Scottish Champions and wants the move to happen.

Texas A&M's No. 1-ranked 2027 recruiting class is all but complete, barring any last-minute flips, specifically focused on five-star cornerback Joshua Dobson, who is firmly committed to South Carolina but recently stated that his recruitment is "long from over," which provides an opening for the Aggies, especially if the Gamecocks struggle during the 2026 season.
Heading into the fall, third-year coach Mike Elko and his staff are focused on the season at hand, while a long list of priority prospects in the 2028 recruiting cycle are already on pace to announce their commitments, with blue-chip four-star quarterback Donald Tabron already receiving multiple predictions to become A&M's second commitment in its 2028 class.
Under Elko, Texas A&M has been in the running for nearly every top-ranked prospect, no matter the position, thanks to a strong culture and, yes, NIL advantage, and on Friday, it was revealed that 2028 five-star Edge Darieon Prescott is set to announce his commitment on Monday, July 27, and will choose between Notre Dame, Oregon, and Texas A&M.
Coming off his unofficial visit to College Station, Prescott has received a prediction from Rivals to land with the Fighting Irish, but it's important to note that early commitments are almost never set in stone, providing every contending program more than a year to make headway.
Standing 6'6" and 220 pounds, Prescott is your standard elite athlete with immense potential, whose length and bend off the edge provide whichever coaching staff is lucky enough to land him with NFL traits that should lead to a bright future at the next level. Prescott is currently positioned as Rivals' 24th-ranked prospect, 5th-ranked Edge, and 2nd-ranked prospect in Illinois.

Motherwell have signed midfielder Alex Lowry on a season-long loan from Wycombe Wanderers.
The 23-year-old former Rangers player scored three goals in 24 appearances for the English League One club last season but last featured on Boxing Day 2025.
"We see this as a great opportunity for Alex and the club," Motherwell manager Alfred Johansson told club media.
"He is a technically gifted footballer who enjoys being on the ball and being creative.

Former Ohio State basketball star Jae'Sean Tate is returning to Houston. The Rockets announced the re-signing of the former Buckeye forward to a one-year deal on Thursday. According to Hoops Hype's Michael Scotto, the contract is worth $3.07 million with a partial guarantee of $1.04 million.
Tate is entering his seventh year with the Rockets after banking the odds and finding his way to Houston after first playing in Europe. He was signed to an NBA contract in 2020 and quickly became a starter who could do a little bit of everything for the Rockets, even making the All-NBA Rookie First Team, becoming only the second non-NBA-drafted player to do so.
Tate has averaged 7.5 points, 3.8 rebounds, and 1.8 ***** ists during his six years with Houston, but those numbers are dragged down a bit by last season's 2.8 points per contest in limited action. Hopefully, this coming season will see a bit of a renaissance, being paired with former Ohio State all-time leading scorer and star guard Bruce Thornton.
Tate becomes only the 15th player in Rockets' history to play at least seven seasons with the club. We wish Tate success and the chance to get a contract beyond this next season.

Earlier this season Xander Schauffele's consecutive cuts made streak ended at 72. A couple of weeks ago, Scottie Scheffler was the PGA Tour active leader at 78 when that ended at the Scottish Open. A week later at the British, Matt Fitzpatrick at 28 was the leader in the category but that was short-lived as he missed the weekend.
Heading into the 3M Open, Hideki Matsuyama was the active leader with 28 straight made cuts. Through 27 holes at TPC Twin Cities, the ***** anese start was 2 under overall and on the wrong side of the projected cut of 3 under, putting him in danger of being the latest cuts made leader to come up short.
But he flipped the script after making birdies on Nos. 10, 12, 13 and 14. His 2 on the par-3 13th also won the fans over as there was a promotion on Friday whereby beers would be half-price at the concession stand near the 13th hole for 10 minutes after any birdie. It didn't take long for a long line to form.
What about those on the wrong side of the cut?
With three events left before the FedEx Cup Playoffs, time is running out for those scrambling to get into the top 70. That's the game within the game among those also more pressing to play the weekend.

Remy Tamer has been named the Director of Track & Field/Cross Country. He has been the women's cross country coach since 2016, winning nine straight conference ******* les and earning seven straight Big South Coach of the Year honors.
Dr. Scott Hall becomes the program's first-ever general manager. He will oversee the administrative duties for the programs.
Shamoya Pruitt has been promoted to ******* ociate head coach, focusing on sprints hurdles and horizontal jumps, while Collin Post has been promoted to ******* ociate head coach, focusing on throws.
Anne Akagi-Koons and Zach Ferrara have been hired as ******* istant coaches.

Jenny Shin fell in love with links golf the first time she played the Women's British Open at Carnoustie 15 years ago.
"I couldn't believe what I was seeing, what I was playing," she said. "One day it was blowing 40 miles. The next day, it's just calm. I had forgotten to play when it was calm.
"So I kind of fell in love, like this is a true test of golf. You have to be so creative, and I'm quite creative around the greens and I love hitting different shots."
Shin's love is certainly shining through at the ISPS Handa Women's Scottish Open, where she leads by five at the halfway mark. Rounds of 66-67 put her at 11 under for the tournament, taking a total of 50 putts in the first two rounds. She'll play in the final group on Saturday alongside Olympic silver medalist Esther Henseleit. Major champion A Lim Kim is six shots back at 5 under.
Shin said she's never skipped the Scottish Open, calling it her favorite stop on tour.
