Hayden Panettiere's estranged mother, Lesley Vogel, has hit back at Gayle King after the CBS Mornings host criticized her response to her daughter's death.
The Heroes star died August 16 after being found in cardiac arrest at a Greenville, South Carolina, apartment. She was 36.
"I was very, very hurt and deeply disappointed in the lack of professionalism, the lack of compassion in slamming someone who's lost two children, without even a modicum of consideration," Vogel told the Daily Mail about King's criticism of her.
"No one reached out to me before," she added. "It's shameful. It's unconscionable to me."
The Independent has contacted King's representatives for comment.

Anna Paquin is calling for stronger protections and support for former child performers after the recent deaths of Hayden Panettiere, Michelle Trachtenberg and Daveigh Chase, arguing that safeguards surrounding young stars have not always worked as intended.
In an Aug. 21 Instagram post, the 44-year-old Oscar winner focused particularly on girls who become ******* ualized while they are still children. As PEOPLE reported, Paquin wrote that former "presexualized female" child stars were "not as protected" by systems that may look effective on paper as they were supposed to be.
Paquin described former child performers as members of a "strange small club" and directly invited anyone struggling with experiences from the entertainment industry to contact her privately. "I believe you and I will stand by your side," she wrote, ending with the message, "You aren't alone."

Hoda Kotb's unusually emotional encounter with a stranger on an airplane did not end when the flight landed. The former Today anchor now says she and the mystery man have recently started texting.

U.S. shale billionaire Harold Hamm is making a multibillion-dollar bet on Argentina's Vaca Muerta, becoming the latest high-profile American investor to target the rapidly expanding shale basin.
Hamm's Continental Resources has agreed to acquire a 50% interest in Phoenix Global Resources, creating an equal joint venture with commodities giant Mercuria Energy Group. The partners plan to invest more than $4 billion over five years and increase Phoenix's production from more than 28,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day to over 100,000 boed.
The combined portfolio will encompass approximately 163,000 net acres across six Vaca Muerta blocks. The proposed transaction remains subject to definitive agreements, closing conditions and regulatory approvals.
Continental is no stranger to the formation. The company entered Argentina last year by acquiring **** ets from Pluspetrol and subsequently bought interests in blocks operated by Pan American Energy. Will this be the year that the tight end position finally lives up to its potential? For years we've hoped for a deep group of TEs riddled with talent at every draft point, only to end up with the same elite group and then a bunch of "Play and pray" options. But maybe this season will be different. Our Yahoo ****** ysts take a look at the tight end position and share their breakout candidate for 2026.
Breakouts tend to exist at the intersection of talent and situation. And for Brenton Strange, the talent piece of the equation isn't hard to see. Since joining the Jaguars in '23, Strange's routes and target share have been on an upward trajectory. The Penn State product barely saw the field his rookie season (2.2% target rate), but he evolved into one of Trevor Lawrence's go-to options as Jacksonville marched toward the playoffs.
After returning from a hip injury sustained in Week 5, Strange supplanted Brian Thomas Jr. as the "WR3" (16.6% share) and even led the team in red-zone targets (14). Plus, the added cardio has only allowed us to see more of his athletic ability, as his yards per route run (9th among all TEs in '25 – min. 10 games played) and YAC per reception picked up between Years 2 and 3.
But I'll admit Strange's situation is, well, strange! The Jaguars traded for and compensated Jakobi Meyers for bringing the passing game to life and got a breakout performance from their 6th-round WR out of the same draft class. Oh, and Thomas Jr. and Travis Hunter are still there. The "lot of mouths to feed" argument will keep Strange's draft-cost down, but let's not forget his productivity and utility within this offense. — Chris Allen
After the Rashid Shaheed trade, Johnson was the TE5 in yards per game and TE8 in receptions per game from Week 10 on. With Jordyn Tyson out until the Week 6-9 range, Johnson should start out strong, as this is the same Saints receiving corps as it was during that explosive sample. The Saints have the advantages of playing against the NFC South, playing indoors and operating in the No. 1 neutral pace offense. Johnson is also good! Watch him!

Roberto De Zerbi held his first press conference ahead of Saturday's Premier League opening match at Brentford. While the press conference was overshadowed slightly by the fresh news that an agreement has been reached with Manchester City for the purchase of Savinho, there was still plenty to talk about in the match.
For starters, as mentioned previously RDZ named the new Tottenham Hotspur leadership group, which includes Micky van de Ven as club captain, along with Pedro Porro, Ben Davies, James Maddison, and Archie Gray as vice captains. But two of that group will not feature tomorrow vs. Brentford — Micky and Porro were both ruled out of contention, as was Pape Matar Sarr.
"Micky is not on the list tomorrow like Pedro Porro. James Maddison is inside [it], Solanke inside, Udogie, Fernandes also. Sarr not because he felt some pain, but nothing big. Kudus is almost ready.
"Today [Micky] worked with us, with the group and he is going very well. He suffered a problem during the pre-season of Australia, I don't know if it was the flight, but not a big problem. We have Senesi, we have Ben Davies and in the right condition to play the game tomorrow."
A lot to unpack there! Spurs have been strangely silent on Micky's absence from preseason, and we all **** umed it was injury related. De Zerbi didn't provide much of an update, but Micky's been in the club socials a LOT lately, and was just named Captain so if there was a major issue we'd probably know about it by now. Sounds like he'll be coming back sooner rather than later. Pedro Porro's absence is likely just fitness related; he only just returned from his post-World Cup break. Sounds like Sarr is just out with a minor knock and the club is being cautious.

Hayden Panettiere's mother, Lesley Vogel, is explaining the rocky relationship that she had with her daughter following the actress' untimely death.
In a statement provided to Entertainment Tonight, Vogel attempted to address her estrangement from the former Nashville star.
"Although my daughter and I were estranged, it was not for lack of care or love," Vogel said in a statement on Thursday. "It was due to the involvement of a toxic individual who I believe led to her death."
"Hayden was a beautiful and talented young woman who unfortunately became involved with the wrong person, and although her family tried to extricate him from her life, we were unable to be successful," Vogel's statement continued.
In her previous statement after Panettiere's death, Vogel's comments drew swift criticism.

For decades, Natalie Portman has been one of our most cerebral stars. A 1999 Vanity Fair cover, promoting "The Phantom Menace," asked whether the then-17-year-old might "choose Harvard over Hollywood." She managed to do both, earning an Ivy League degree and an Oscar. Her characters in movies from "Jackie" to "May December" are often overthinkers, and her Instagram book club picks tend toward high literature.

Who better, then, to serve as the heroine of a Rachel Cusk novel?

Cusk, the experimental novelist, is set to publish "Life of M," about an unnamed actress coping with feelings of alienation and depersonalization, on Aug. 25. Cusk's work, like the well-loved "Outline" trilogy, favors deep excavation of inner turmoil over what might be called "plot," and "Life of M" is no exception. Still, the obvious similarities to the known facts of Portman's life have earned the book plenty of buzz.

To wit: M, a former child star who received her greatest acclaim for playing a ballerina, is raising children, seemingly solo, in Paris. All of this checks out, and Portman's putative connection to Cusk — she selected Cusk's last novel, 2024's "Parade," for Natalie's Book Club, and both actress and author live in Paris — lends the enterprise a juicy overlay of gossip.

There's no public information indicating Portman's involvement in the project, or whether she approved it at all. (Portman's rep and the book's publicist at Farrar, Straus and Giroux did not respond to requests for comment.) And if people are reading "Life of M" as a document of truth, it may be in part because the novel so confidently places its reader within restricted access zones. We see M through the eyes of a narrator, an unnamed person who has obtained M's permission to document her life. And so we accompany M to a spa, where she and a younger actress chitchat about their peers and discuss Hollywood's gender pay gap, and to an interview at a chic restaurant, where she observes strangers snapping her picture. The access Cusk grants extends deep into M's mind as well: With her friend, M ponders how she might help a new generation of actresses despite her own "ennui" about the industry; with the journalist interviewing her, M is burdened "by the impossibility of anyone ever understanding what she is."

The project of this book is to help us to know a person who rejects examination, just as journalists have struggled to crack Portman, who avoids discussing her personal life in interviews. "Life of M" is not the sort of novel that one can "spoil," but suffice it to say that M ultimately makes her displeasure at the narrator's project plain: Being under a writer's gaze is, for her, intolerable. M comes by this aversion to fame honestly. We're informed that "starring in a film as a child had immediately brought her childhood to an end," and that press coverage of her entanglements as an adult have strained her relationship with her family. Ruby Rose is sharing a deeply personal glimpse into what she says was Hayden Panettiere's private pain before the actress died at 36. Rose posted screenshots of text messages she says came from Panettiere, with the exchanges focusing in part on the difficult relationship Panettiere had publicly described with her estranged mother, Lesley Vogel.
One screenshot showed a contact saved as "Hayden" telling Rose that she had been crying over her mother's alleged cruelty. "My god I'm 36 and she can still cause this kind of pain," the message read, according to Entertainment Weekly.
Entertainment Weekly said it could not independently verify the identity of the person messaging Rose. The outlet had contacted Rose's team for more information and Vogel for comment when its report was published.
The content nevertheless echoes comments Panettiere made publicly before her death about her relationship with Vogel. In one of her most candid interviews earlier this year, she described ending their professional partnership at 19 because she wanted the woman who had managed her career to simply become her mother again.

The reply reads, "I was sobbing over her cruelty yesterday thinking, my god I'm 36 and she can still cause this kind of pain. I'm her only child left and this is how she wants to handle the situation?!"
Another text from a person saved as "Hayden" on Rose's phone also showed them mentioning a potential podcast idea (via Entertainment Weekly). The message reads, "I'd love to do a podcast/anothony [sic] Bourdain show where we talk about issues and then go to the ends of the earth to find solutions."
The screenshots come amid Vogel facing backlash over her initial comments following her daughter's death. However, she recently released another statement, clarifying her complex bond with her daughter and speaking about her passing. In a statement, Vogel said, "Although my daughter and I were estranged, it was not for lack of care or love. It was due to the involvement of a toxic individual who I believe led to her death." She described her as a "beautiful and talented young woman" who became involved with the wrong person, whom she claimed the family tried to remove from her life. It has been almost 29 years since Princess Diana tragically died in Paris, and after all this time her brother, Earl Charles Spencer has put pen to paper to write a book about his late sister. Just days after the news of the book broke, Charles has reminded his Instagram followers that Althorp, Diana's childhood home, will close in 10 days.
The last chance to visit will be 31 August, as it is every year. Then, the doors will close again until next year, welcoming visitors from 1 July 2027.
Some may find it odd that the estate is only open for two full months of the year, but interestingly that was a deal struck with the government many years ago, Charles himself has previously revealed.

Given that it had been 22 years since the Gunners last won the ****** le — Ted founded TSF nearly a decade after that — it's all y'all's first season with our club as holders, too. How does it feel?
Recently, I've seen a fair few new names in the comments, which is awesome. We're proud of our community and want to make sure it's a fun and welcoming place for everyone. There are several people here who have become real life friends after connecting on TSF. To that end, we always do a "getting to know you" post to kick off the season. I'll get us started.
I'm Aaron. Born and raised in the D.C. area and still here. Besides ****** nal, my sports fandoms are the Washington Capitals (and other D.C. sports teams I suppose — definitely the Spirit!), Duke University (my alma mater), and LSU football because my mother's family is from Baton Rouge. I'm a big NFL fan but more the sport than any particular team. Really, if it's sports and it's on TV or streaming, there's a decent chance I'll watch.

Ketlen Vieira was a top-ranked bantamweight in the UFC ever since she beat Sara McMann and Cat Zingano nearly a decade ago, and stayed among the elite until the UFC decided not to offer her a new deal following a win over Jacqueline Cavalcanti this past May. For Vieira, it's still hard to wrap her head around that"unbelievable" call.
It didn't take long for Vieira to find a new home, signing with PFL to face their featherweight champion Cris Cyborg in the main event of PFL Tampa on Aug. 22. Moments away from one of her ultimate dream fights, Vieira opened up on the "mix of feelings" of leaving the UFC after a decade in the promotion.
"I was already expecting it because usually we renew a contract before the final fight," Vieira told MMA Fighting. "When 'Dedé' [Andre Pederneiras] told me they wanted me to have my last fight, I already found it a little strange and was kind of expecting it. But it was still a huge surprise to me because I've been a top athlete in the division for many years."
"What I'm about to say isn't me being arrogant or anything, and I even apologize for saying it," she continued, "but I'm much better than many of the fighters who are there at bantamweight. It's kind of unbelievable that they wouldn't renew my contract when there are many other fighters there who aren't on my level, you know? But I always put my life in God's hands, and He's the one who decides, and He guided me toward what I wanted, which was a ******* le shot."

NEW DELHI: The last time Qamran Iqbal played competitive cricket, it took him nearly 2,800 kms and a frantic 15 hours to get there. Called up at short notice, the 24-year-old endured a chaotic journey that has stayed with him ever since. This time, though, there is no last-minute scramble. Iqbal arrived at the BCCI's Centre of Excellence (CoE) four days before the Duleep Trophy, giving himself time to settle in and prepare for the challenge ahead.

Iqbal is one of six members of Jammu & Kashmir's Ranji Trophy-winning side picked for North Zone, and they will open their campaign against West Zone from Sunday. "My last Bengaluru trip was something else," Iqbal tells TimesofIndia.com.
Six months ago, on February 23, a day before the Ranji Trophy final, Qamran Iqbal was relaxing at his home in Srinagar when, around 3 pm, his phone rang. Jammu and Kashmir needed him in Hubballi, nearly 2,800 kms away, after opener Shubham Khajuria was ruled out with an injury.

The 24-year-old immediately embarked on a cross-country journey, arriving at the venue barely an hour before the toss. Less than 24 hours after receiving the call-up, Qamran produced the innings of his life, scoring an unbeaten 160 in the second innings to steer Jammu and Kashmir to their maiden Ranji Trophy ******* le, defeating Karnataka on the basis of the first-innings lead.
"Everything happened suddenly," he says.

"I left Srinagar that same night. I took a late-night flight and travelled through Delhi and Mumbai before reaching Hubballi. I arrived around 8 in the morning on match day and went almost straight to the ground. A day earlier, I was somewhere else and suddenly I was playing a Ranji Trophy final. It felt a little strange.

"I wasn't feeling pressure as such, but there was some travel fatigue. Still, it was fine because everyone in the team contributed. It was truly a team effort, and that's why we won. It was a dream come true for the entire team. Winning the Ranji Trophy was a special feeling for everyone ******* ociated with Jammu and Kashmir cricket. It felt really good," he continues.
The youngster, who once opened the batting alongside Yashasvi Jaiswal for India Under-19, cherishes the Ranji Trophy triumph but insists it is only the beginning. Having been named in North Zone's 15-member Duleep Trophy squad, he is determined to achieve bigger things.

"I want to achieve a lot more in my cricket career. Winning the Ranji Trophy for the first time made me very proud, and I was happy that I could contribute to the team's success. But this is only the beginning. I want to achieve much more," he says.

Hayden Panettiere's death this week, just five days before her 37th birthday, marks the latest tragic end for a child star. In recent months, Panettiere had become more transparent about the trauma, including **** ual exploitation, she endured as a young actress. The timing of her death is tragic both in light of her age and how recently she appeared to have been winning her fight against addiction. Her efforts to reclaim her autonomy should be acknowledged for what she overcame — and for what fame does to child stars.
Panettiere began appearing in commercials at just 11 months old; by age 5, she'd been in 50. Her breakout role came at age 10, playing a coach's spirited daughter in "Remember the **** ans." Her multiseason portrayals of an indestructible cheerleader on the television series "Heroes" and a troubled country music star on ABC's "Nashville" made her a cultural fixture to millennials.
For decades, the autonomy, safety and happiness of child stars were not a priority for insatiable audiences nor the Hollywood industrial complex. If Panettiere's accounts are any guide, they still aren't.
Off set, however, Panettiere struggled at basically every turn: with an onerous mother, from whom Panettiere was estranged for much of her adult life; drug addiction; alcoholism; depression; and multiple rehab stints. She had relationships with men 10 or more years older than her. She was plied with pills at 15, she revealed this year. Her child custody battle was just one of many traumas dissected in tabloid headlines.
This spring, Panettiere published a memoir, "This Is Me: A Reckoning," that is equal parts appalling and utterly sympathy-inducing. Panettiere bared all, describing her "shortcomings as a mother," her refusal to "blame" anyone else and her grief "for all the hours lost to addiction." The media campaign for the book pulled no punches. Panettiere gave audiences the one thing she refused to further compromise: truth.

Hayden Panettiere's relationship with her mother, Lesley Vogel, was believed to have been strained before the actress' death at 36 on August 16. Now, Vogel's first public comments following her daughter's death are putting their complicated history back under the spotlight.

On Tuesday, Vogel, 70, released a statement remembering her daughter and reflecting on her career. "I think Hayden was an amazingly talented person in so many departments, and I think young people who grow up in the entertainment industry — it is a struggle, and it's a very challenging industry, and it's not unusual for them to sadly find the wrong path," Vogel told NBC News on Tuesday.

She also reflected on the death of Hayden's younger brother, Jansen Panettiere, who died at 28 in February 2023 from an enlarged heart and aortic valve complications. "I just feel that she's with her brother and they're at peace," Vogel said.

The Arizona Diamondbacks got some really strange news on Monday night, as Ketel Marte didn't show up to the ballpark and was then placed on the restricted list by the D-Backs.
Multiple reports indicated that he flew into Boston with the team, but didn't show up for their game against the Boston Red Sox. The question is, why did he not show up? Nick Piecoro of The Arizona Republic reported that Marte was "OK physically," but that might've changed with the latest report.
Piecoro reported Tuesday morning that Marte is flying back to Arizona, leaving his D-Backs teammates in Boston, to have an MRI on his knee after not showing up for the game Monday night against the Boston Red Sox.
"Ketel Marte is returning to Arizona to undergo an MRI on his knee, according to a source," Piecoro reports.
