The Washington Commanders began the week with some surprising coaching news; they were moving on from first-year tight ends coach Ben Steele. Steele was arrested last month on a DWI charge and had initially been placed on leave.
It didn't take long to realize who'd replace Steele. Legendary former NFL wide receiver Wes Welker, a five-time Pro Bowl selection as a player, was already on Washington's staff as an offensive ****** istant. Before arriving in Washington, Welker served as the wide receivers coach for the 49ers and Dolphins, and worked with the tight ends during minicamp last month while Steele was on leave.
On Tuesday, one day before the Commanders begin training camp, head coach Dan Quinn confirmed the move.
"Wes Welker will be working with the tight ends, and that's how we'll proceed forward," Quinn said.

Michigan Wolverines head coach Kyle Whittingham sees only one way for college football to sustain itself as NIL grows every year. The rise in NIL has fueled conference realignment rumors as everyone seeks individual interests over conference priorities.
In his conversation with ESPN's Rich Eisen on Monday, Whittingham suggested converting college football into a minor league addition to the NFL. This was the Wolverines head coach's response when asked how he would improve the current state of college football, where money disparity has become a major issue:
"I think it's got to be a NFL minor league model where we have a salary cap and the players are employees," Whittingham said. "I think, as distasteful as some of that is, I don't think there's any other way that's better than that. And, right now, it's out of control. We're going to have probably a dozen teams in the next recruiting cycle with $50 million rosters."
With the Big Ten and SEC hosting some of the best teams in college football over the past decade, Whittingham was fueling a "super conference" as an alternative to the current system.
"And there's such a disparity between the haves and the have-nots, I think the only way to get that evened out and level the playing field is to go ahead and pattern it after a minor league NFL model or 'super league' if you will. You'll probably see 48-60 teams survive the cut and be on the right side of the line in the sand and proceed forward," the head coach continued.

Manchester City midfielder Rodri will be sidelined for a "short period of rehabilitation" following back surgery.
New manager Enzo Maresca said on Friday that Rodri would have an operation on Monday, and that he "needs a holiday, he needs to rest and recover and then he will be back with us".
No timeline has been set for his return.
City face ******* nal in the Community Shield on 16 August before their Premier League opener against Bournemouth on 23 August.

Paralympic medallist Daphne Schrager insists she has "never cheated" after being given a two-year ban following an "unintentional" positive test for a banned substance.
Schrager, who won a silver medal at Paris 2024, tested positive for the banned substance Ligandrol, which selectively builds muscle and bone mass.
However, the ban has been backdated to start when she was initially suspended on 2 June 2025.
It will end on 1 June 2027, meaning Schrager could still compete at the 2028 Paralympic Games in Los Angeles. However, she has been left out of the England squad for the Commonwealth Games, currently taking place in Glasgow.
The substance was found after the 25-year-old completed an out-of-competition test last year.

The Detroit Red Wings have been rejected by one of their few reliable scorers, taking a hit to their 2026-27 roster.
Patrick Kane rejected the Wings' attempts to re-sign him for a third consecutive summer and instead entered free agency, where the 37-year-old found an appealing offer from the Chicago Blackhawks. Kane is going back to where his career began with a two-year deal.
Kane sounded like there was a chance he would stay when the season ended, but that was before news emerged that Dylan Larkin - who shares an agent, Pat Brisson, with Kane, had requested a trade.
A chaotic Red Wings summer continued July 15 with the news general manager Steve Yzerman would be moving to an advisor role.

Former Florida Gators and NFL quarterback Tim Tebow has signed a multi-year contract extension with ESPN, the sports broadcasting network announced July 20.
"I love this game and getting to talk about it every Saturday with the crews on SEC Network and ESPN is a gift I don't take lightly," Tebow said in a statement. "SEC fans bring a passion that never gets old, and I'm grateful I get to keep doing this alongside people who feel like family."
The statement mentions that Tebow will continue to appear on SEC Nation, the SEC Network's weekly Saturday morning pregame show he has appeared on for the past decade, in addition to doing work on ESPN's College Football Live and SportsCenter.

Former Texas A&M wide receiver Demond Demas has found his new home, committing to the Virginia State Trojans. Demas signed with Texas A&M in 2020 as a five-star prospect.
Demas redshirted in 2020, playing in four games. He cracked the rotation in 2021, playing in nine games and making six starts before an injury ended his season. He finished the season with 15 catches for 235 yards and one touchdown. He had the best game of his career against New Mexico, catching two passes for 100 yards and a touchdown.
That was his last season with Texas A&M, as multiple off-field incidents caused him to sit out the 2022 season and eventually enter the transfer portal. He wound up spending the 2023 season at Garden City Community College, where he played in eight games and did not record a statistic.
He did not play during the 2024 or 2025 seasons before committing to Virginia State ahead of the 2026 season. The Trojans went 6-4 last season, going 4-3 in conference games. They averaged 27.5 points per game and 265.0 receiving yards per game.

Through his first two NBA Summer League games, former UNC basketball star Caleb Wilson is putting the league on notice.
In his July 10 debut, Caleb Wilson scored a record 35 points. On Monday night, Wilson led all players with 19 points and five blocks.
Wilson's play is also drawing the attention of prominent sports journalists. In a Tuesday morning episode of ESPN's Get Up, ******* yst Seth Greenberg and ESPN NBA Senior Writer Vince Goodwill delivered massive praise for the former Tar Heel.
“If you look at upside, someone’s potential, not right now but two three years from now, he has the greatest upside of all these rookies," Greenberg said.
Wilson, the fourth overall pick in this year's NBA Draft, already faced off against third overall pick Cameron Boozer back on July 10, out-dueling him in the Chicago Bulls' 97-96 loss to the Memphis Grizzles. FAYETTEVILLE — Another big man might be joining Arkansas basketball for the upcoming season.
Caleb Ourigou committed to the Razorbacks on Tuesday, July 14. The 6-foot-10 New York native who played his most recent season in the Overtime Elite League is a four-star prospect in the 2027 class, but John Calipari and his staff have been pursuing a reclassification from Ourigou. Arkansas hopes he will become the latest addition to a star-studded recruiting haul in 2026.
Ourigou took official visits to Kentucky, UConn, BYU and Arkansas. According to the 247Sports Composite, he was the No. 55 ranked player overall and the No. 8 center among 2027 prospects.
If he reclassifies, Ourigou will be the sixth freshman on the Hogs' 2026-27 roster. He would join other five-star recruits Jordan Smith Jr., Miikka Muurinen, JJ Andrews and Abdou Toure.
Arkansas failed to sign a defensive-minded rim protector out of the transfer portal or in its initial high school recruiting class. Calipari will hope Ourigou can fill that void.

The Philadelphia Phillies made a change at manager earlier in the campaign and it worked out.
Philadelphia moved on from former manager Rob Thomson and turned the reins over to Don Mattingly, who has done nothing short of impress. Sure, there have been rumors out there left and right about the possibility of bringing Alex Cora in. The Phillies even offered Cora the job after firing Thomson. But it didn't work out then and Mattingly has impressed since.
The Phillies are 54-43 on the season and have pulled themselves out of the mud and now are just two games behind the Atlanta Braves in the National League East standings. It's been a dramatic turnaround, to say the least.
While some have made it seem like Cora coming to town is inevitable, USA Today's Bob Nightengale noted that Mattingly would "love" to stick around, if the Phillies are interested.

England's young stars Henry Pollock and Noah Caluori are targeting starting for their country after scoring tries in Saturday's 73-8 thrashing of Fiji.
Pollock, 21, claimed a hat-trick after being introduced as a 48th-minute replacement at Hill ****** inson Stadium, while 19-year-old Caluori, making his debut off the bench, set up a score for Henry Slade before diving over himself.
"A big thing for me at the minute is wanting to get that starting shirt," said Pollock, who has started only once in 12 Test appearances for England.
"Steve [Borthwick] said to me before the Fiji game to just go out there and be myself. I hope I did that and hope he saw enough in me."

Fisnik Asllani's expected summer departure from TSG Hoffenheim appears to be edging closer.
Following reports linking the striker with Borussia Dortmund and FC Barcelona, Hoffenheim sporting managing director Andreas Schicker has confirmed that talks are underway with clubs over a potential transfer.
"The situation is that there are talks with clubs both domestically and abroad. It's also no secret that Fisnik Asllani has a release clause," Schicker told Kicker.

A familiar face is returning to Washington via a convoluted path.
Former All-Star Khris Middleton is re-joining the Wizards from the Dallas Mavericks via a six-team sign-and-trade deal, ESPN’s Shams Charania reports.
Per the report, Middleton agreed to a three-year, $17.6 million contract that facilitated the deal. The Clippers, Pistons, Bucks and Grizzlies are also involved in the deal that will send D'Angelo Russell, a future second-round pick and a future second-round pick swap from Washington to Memphis, according to the report.
The latest part of the deal will facilitate previously agreed-upon trades that sent Isaiah Stewart to the Grizzlies, John Collins, Gary Harris and Taurean Prince to the Pistons, Santi Aldama to the Mavericks and Caris LeVert to the Bucks, according to the report. It’s not clear what the Clippers, who sent Collins to the Pistons via a sign-and-trade, get out of the deal.
Middleton, 34, was a three-time All-Star and key player for the 2020-21 Bucks that won the NBA championship behind Giannis Antetokounmpo. The Bucks traded Middleton to the Wizards ahead of the 2025 trade deadline.

FRISCO, Texas (AP) — Big 12 Commissioner Brett Yormark wanted to talk Tuesday about the league's upcoming season, not the Brendan Sorsby gambling saga at Texas Tech that led to a lot of legal wrangling and a since-dismissed court order that had sent shockwaves through college sports.
Even though that was the first thing Yormark was asked about after his opening remarks at Big 12 football media days.
“I appreciate the question. I appreciate other questions that are probably going to come forth today. Today is not the time to address that issue,” Yormark answered. "Today is about celebrating the upcoming football season and celebrating our 16 schools.”
Yormark later spoke about the conference “moving ahead as 16 strong.”
That would include Texas Tech, which the league and its other 15 members were discussing potentially punishing if Sorsby had indeed played this fall for the Red Raiders after the quarterback transferred from Cincinnati, another Big 12 school where he played the past two seasons.

Artem Dovbyk is expected to leave Roma.
The Ukrainian striker isn't part of Gian Piero Gasperini's coaching plan, although he will likely attend the training camp scheduled for July 13th at Trigoria.
The Giallorossi, however, intend to capitalize on the former Girona player's sale, allowing them to invest in Malen as his replacement. Genoa has made an offer for Dovbyk but has requested the player on loan, a deal that can't meet Roma's financial needs.
Daniele De Rossi has made moves to bring Artem Dovbyk to Genoa. As Corriere dello Sport reports, the former Roma coach spoke directly with the player to understand the terms of the deal, but the club has put a damper on the deal.
The Giallorossi are unwilling to accept a loan deal that would also require them to contribute to the player's wages. A different deal is being worked on at Trigoria that could guarantee a financial return for the club.

This comes after FIFA decided to overturn Balogun’s suspension, making him available for selection despite an earlier red-card ban.

While Enzo Maresca and Pep Guardiola share similar footballing philosophies, life will be different at Manchester City with Maresca as the manager. One such difference between the pair is the size of the squad that each manager wants to operate with. Pep Guardiola preferred to work with a smaller squad to maintain performance and team harmony. Sam Lee has reported for The Athletic that Maresca would prefer to work with a bigger squad than Guardiola.

Looking at the Manchester City squad, there are four players who could earn a lifeline of sorts from Enzo Maresca. Those four are Tijjani Reijnders, Nico Gonzalez, Rico Lewis, and James Trafford. There is a case for each to play a more prominent role under Maresca.
In the case of Nico Gonzalez, there is a vacancy in midfield with Bernardo Silva having left the club. Yes, City have signed Elliot Anderson from Nottingham Forest. They also remain in the market for another midfielder. Also, Rodri is set to have a delayed start to next season. That could be Nico’s lifeline if City do not sign another midfielder. The other factor is that Nico Gonzalez will get the pre season to impress Maresca unless he secures a summer transfer.
Tijjani Reijnders and Rico Lewis could also potentially fight for a role in Manchester City’s midfield. Reijnders may be a player that Maresca could use. Reijnders’ ability to score goals from midfield could be an attribute that Maresca values. However, the Dutch international would have to fight Phil Foden and Rayan Cherki for minutes you would ****** ume. Rico Lewis has always looked to be a midfielder rather than a right-back. Could he play in midfield under Maresca? Perhaps he could but his size in the physical Premier League counts against him.

Though the United States men's national team has stayed cool in the run-up to Monday's matchup against Belgium, the players know that they're on the verge of something big. After earning their first knockout win in 24 years on Wednesday, the USMNT is a win away from matching its best modern World Cup finish with a trip to the quarterfinals.
It's a moment midfielder Tyler Adams said the team is fully embracing.
"You need to embrace the moment, that's for sure," Adams told reporters on Friday. "It was nice to get a little bit of a taste of what it feels like to play with something a little bit more on the line in the last game. I think that's good preparation."
