"I come to this with a bias because I love Erika," Kelly replied. "I consider her a dear friend and I hate to see her suffer. It's been very painful to watch her suffer this year."

There's no question, I don't like it," the former Today show host continued. "I wish it weren't happening. I wish people would move on and just see the evidence that's there. CNBC reported that Paramount Skydance Corporation (NASDAQ:PSKY) CEO David Ellison has cleared regulatory approval in 68 jurisdictions for his $110 billion bid to acquire Warner Bros. Discovery, Inc. (NASDAQ:WBD), but a lawsuit from 12 state attorneys general remains the final obstacle.
California Attorney General Rob Bonta, who leads the states' case, canceled a planned settlement meeting with Ellison, noting a "lack of good faith." Paramount said it remains "hopeful" and denied being the source of leaks about the talks. Media veteran Tom Rogers said California's home constituency is "overwhelmingly against the transaction," reducing the state's incentive to settle. Paramount faces a ticking fee that could reach roughly $650 million per quarter starting September 30 and asked a court to force the states to post a $1.88 billion bond.
The deal already holds broad global regulatory approval, which strengthens Paramount Skydance Corporation (NASDAQ:PSKY)'s position in the remaining state dispute. With clearance from roughly 68 jurisdictions worldwide, the state antitrust lawsuits represent the main remaining obstacle rather than a broad regulatory challenge. For Warner Bros. Discovery, Inc. (NASDAQ:WBD) shareholders, California Governor Gavin Newsom is sending a clear signal that he prefers a settlement over a prolonged court battle. If Paramount can satisfy California and the other states, WBD shareholders can finally receive the agreed payment instead of remaining stuck in legal limbo. That makes a negotiated resolution potentially attractive to shareholders who have faced prolonged uncertainty around the transaction.
Paramount has also shown flexibility rather than simply defending the deal's original terms. The company has acknowledged that it is considering structural changes to settle the lawsuits. It shows management is willing to make concessions to get the transaction completed. That flexibility could improve the chances of reaching a settlement without requiring the companies to wait for a lengthy court process.

While President Donald Trump's tariffs have caused much heartburn on Wall Street, China's cheap and overwhelming exports have also been rippling through the global economy.
But the Chinese growth model is running out of road, setting the stage for another global economic crisis, according to Michael Froman, a former U.S. Trade Representative and current president of the Council on Foreign Relations.
Writing in Foreign Affairs last month, he warned "the world's ability to absorb Chinese overcapacity is approaching a breaking point."
For example, the International Monetary Funds estimated that global GDP growth is running around 3.1% this year, while China's trade surplus expanded more than 20% in early 2026. That's after China posted a $1.2 trillion trade surplus in 2025—the largest in recorded history—growing three times faster than global goods trade.
Now there's widespread pushback against the flood of Chinese exports. Most notably, Trump hiked tariffs on China last year and made it the centerpiece of his "Liberation Day" trade war. But even once-stalwart defenders of open markets, like the European Union, are racing to put up trade barriers against China.

Just seven days from now, the 2026 NFL season will officially begin for our Minnesota Vikings, as they will host the Green Bay Packers at U.S. Bank Stadium. That means the offseason is officially over, and we asked you as part of our SB Nation Reacts survey for this week exactly what you thought about it. We have those results, and for the most part it appears that folks were relatively happy with how things went.
Of those who took the time to respond to our survey, 45% gave the offseason a "B" grade, which is pretty good. Combine that with the 7% that graded it as an "A," and over half of our respondents think that the purple had a better-than-average offseason overall. Another 34% thought that the moves the team made merited a "C" grade, which is an average mark. So, the overwhelming majority of you seem to think that the offseason in Minnesota wasn't anything approaching a disaster or anything like that.
Still, a few of the people who responded were more on the "gloom and doom" end of the spectrum. There were 11% of the people who responded to the poll that gave the Vikings a "D" for their offseason moves, while the remaining 3% went as negative as possible and slapped a big ol' "F" on what the Vikings have done since the 2025 season came to an end. That seems a little harsh, but everyone is free to have their own perspective on things.
Frankly, I think a "B" is just about right. I think the Vikings addressed a lot of the things they needed to address. Hopefully the quarterback issue is solved, and if it is this team has a lot of potential to do some damage in 2026. The defense should continue to be a menace as long as there aren't too many injuries. Will it be enough to make a run in what should still be the most competitive division in the NFL? We'll have to see.

The Cleveland Browns are coming into the 2026 NFL season likely to be one of the worst teams in the league. It would be a shocker if they made the playoffs, or even just had close to a .500 winning percentage.
This team just, simply put, isn't good enough right now. Looking into the future, there are plenty of question marks surrounding this team as well. So, for the loyal Browns fans who've stuck through thick and thin, how optimistic should they be?
According to Adam Coleman of The Athletic, a poll conducted among fans of all NFL teams, the Browns fanbase was overwhelmingly the least optimistic in the league. Unfortunately, they have good reason to have such little optimism.
Coleman shared that Browns fans handed out a brutal 2.7 percent optimism score, by far the lowest in the NFL. In 31st place, second-worst in the league, was the Miami Dolphins' fanbase, which at least had 11.1 percent optimism.

It's been roughly three months since the New York Knicks became champions of the basketball world. For the first time in 53 years, and after long stretches of misery, the franchise finally reached the pinnacle of success, but the journey was not easy.
In fact, throughout the playoffs, the Knicks found themselves down big on several occasions, only to mount amazing comebacks that defined their run. Recently, Knicks swingman Mikal Bridges spoke about the comebacks and the conditions that made it possible to survive overwhelming odds.
"The Cavs series, that Game 1, being down 22 in the 4th. Last year in the playoffs, being down a lot," said Bridges in a chat with Men's Health. "We had opportunities where we had been in the same situations and succeeded. It's having that faith of being here before. Obviously, it's different being in the Finals than any other playoff series, but it's still just another game. It's just having that belief and taking it one possession at a time; we've been here before, we've done it before. Ain't gonna get it back in one possession, still a lot of time left. A lot of us have been in the league for a long time, and we know in this day and age, with the fast pace and a lot of threes, that even down 27 points at halftime, you still have a lot of time. And being at home, having the crowd behind your back, it's gonna put pressure on them."
The Knicks went 53-29 in the 2025-26 season, and most critics had them a tier below the Cavaliers, Celtics, and Pistons in the East. In the playoffs, however, the Knicks dominated the field, going 16-3 in an impressive performance. Along the way, they faced fierce resistance, overcoming a 22-point deficit in the opening game against the Cavaliers.
Their unlikeliest win, however, was in the Finals. In Game 4 of the series, the Knicks went down by as much as 29 points, but somehow came back and won (107-106) off a buzzer-beater from OG Anunoby. It seemed impossible at the time, but the Knicks always felt that victory was within reach.

The Cowboys have two defensive captains this season, and both were acquired by trading Micah Parsons.
Kenny Clark and Quinnen Williams are the Cowboys' defensive captains. A year ago, the Cowboys traded Parsons to the Packers for Clark and two first-round picks, and later they traded one of those picks to the Jets for Williams.
Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer singled out Williams as a leader who has meant a lot to the team.
"From the minute he got here, he's been about one thing, and it's winning," Schottenheimer said of Williams. "He's never won in the NFL and the leadership is real, the talent is incredible, but every decision that guy makes is based on what's best for us winning. I love that about him, and it's infectious. It rubs off. I love hearing him talk to the young linemen, the young defenders."
Unsurprisingly, quarterback Dak Prescott is the offensive captain and kicker Brandon Aubrey is the special teams captain. Schottenheimer said the players voted on the captains, and those four players were overwhelmingly the top vote getters.

In one of the first days of the 2026-27 college football season, chaos ensued at the SHI Stadium in Piscataway, New Jersey. On Thursday, Sept. 3, coach Greg Schiano's Rutgers Scarlet Knights hosted coach Joe Harasymiak's Massachusetts Minutemen for their first game of the campaign. Unfortunately for the Scarlet Knights, the Minutemen defeated them by 16 points, 37-21.
It was an embarrassing defeat, to say the least, for the Scarlet Knights, as they were the overwhelming favorites to beat the Minutemen. As the rest of the college football world reacts in shock to the game, insider Brett McMurphy called out the Big Ten Conference, where the Scarlet Knights play, following the Minutemen victory with a post on X/Twitter.
"Can a conference be considered the nation's best conference if one of its teams loses to UMass? Asking for a friend," McMurphy wrote.

It's crucial to separate two very different time frames, because they tell opposite stories. On a year-to-date basis, semiconductors still dominate: semiconductor ETFs like SOXX and SMH are up roughly 50% to 70%+, while the flagship software ETF, IGV, spent much of the year underwater, down double digits at points as investors dumped software on fears that AI would disrupt SaaS business models.
But on a month-to-date and recent-trend basis, the leadership has completely reversed. Over the past several weeks, software ETFs have sharply outperformed chip ETFs. In August alone, software crushed semiconductors in what ****** ysts called a record divergence. 58 of 61 major chip stocks fell while the software winners posted enormous monthly gains. If you're looking at the last month rather than the last year, software is winning decisively.
After a monster first half, chip stocks became expensive with some names trading at extreme forward multiples (Intel at one point traded near 79x forward earnings). Meanwhile, software had been sold off hard earlier in the year on AI-disruption fears, leaving many SaaS names historically cheap. When the growth is comparable but one side is pricey and the other is discounted, money typically rotates toward the discount.
The first phase of the AI boom was about building the infrastructure — the chips, the data centers, the memory. That phase overwhelmingly rewarded semiconductors. The market is now shifting to the next question: who actually monetizes AI? Increasingly, the answer points to the application and software layer — the companies embedding AI into enterprise products and charging for it. That thesis flows directly into software ETFs like IGV, SKYY, and WCLD.
Semiconductor indices had become historically top-heavy and crowded, with concentration metrics near record extremes. When a trade gets that crowded, it becomes vulnerable to a sharp unwind, exactly what the August sell-off in chips looked like. Investors took profits in their biggest winners and redeployed into the laggard.

In the end, it was not close. To be honest, that was to be expected.
Ty France was the overwhelming answer to the Gaslamp Ball Reacts Survey poll question this week. "Who has been more impressive so far this season?" Respondents had the choices of France, Luis Campusano, Walker Buehler or Bradgley Rodriguez. Looking back, it would have been appropriate to add Yuki Matsui to the list of candidates as well, but France would probably remain the top choice.
The right-handed slugger has been stellar defensively for the Padres this season, despite a bobble on a play on Saturday night. The fielders, Manny Machado, Xander Bogaerts and Jake Cronenworth all seem to enjoy having a Gold Glove Award winner manning first base. It allows them to make throws without the pressure of having to make them perfect. France himself is not perfect, but more often than not, if he can get to a throw he does and that results in more outs and less traffic on the bases for San Diego pitchers.
France came into the 2026 season as a minor league invite, but he has taken full advantage of his second opportunity with the Padres. There is no reason to think he would not receive a multi-year contract offer that would start in 2027 if the season is not lost due to a lockout. France added to his season totals with a home run int the second game of the series against the Tampa Bay Rays. He is currently hitting .287 after 355 at-bats. He has 19 home runs with 59 RBI and 47 runs scored. France has also walked 30 times. He has been entrenched as the No. 4 hitter in the San Diego lineup and there have been calls from some fans the the Padres to slide him up to the No. 3 spot in front of Machado who has been struggling as of the late.

As of August 29, Stephen Curry is eligible to sign at most a two-year, $136.7 million deal, which the Warriors are reportedly happy to offer him at this point in his career, despite his age of 38.
Under the Over 38 rule in the collective bargaining agreement (CBA), any player over 38 can sign only a two-year contract with the same team that employs them, or a three-year contract if they become a free agent.
Therefore, Stephen Curry, who turns 39 in March 2027, will become eligible for a three-year extension next summer valued at over $200 million, which may be why Curry is waiting.
There is also a chance he may want to test free agency at least once in his career to contend for a championship, since he is not expected to leverage his contract extension into forcing the Warriors to make roster changes. But there is an 'overwhelming likelihood' that Stephen Curry will retire with the Warriors.

It'll be Tennessee football's season opener when Furman comes to Neyland Stadium, but the Paladins got an early start to their 2026 campaign on Aug. 27.
Furman beat Anderson, a Division II team, to start its season at home in Greenville, South Carolina. It wasn't an overwhelmingly convincing performance but ended in a 20-3 victory for the Paladins (1-0).
The Vols play Furman on Sept. 5 (3:30 p.m. ET, SEC Network+/ESPN+).
Quarterback Jake Garcia started at quarterback for Furman. A fifth-year Michigan transfer, Garcia won the job over Western New Mexico (Division II) transfer Connor Ackerley, junior Nehuel Garcia and freshman Trey Smith.
Garcia finished his first start for Furman going 15-of-28 passing for 183 yards and an interception. He also had nine rushes for 51 yards and avoided taking any sacks.

Las Vegas Aces superstar A'ja Wilson is still an overwhelming favorite at sportsbooks (-1200 odds at DraftKings) and prediction markets (88 percent at Kalshi) to capture her third straight MVP and record fifth overall. Minnesota Lynx rookie Olivia Miles is second at +800 and 8 percent, followed by Clark at 35-to-1 and 4 percent, then Clark's teammate Kelsey Mitchell at 40-to-1 and 1 percent.
We know voters take into account a candidate's relative value to their team, but how can that be actually quantified? The Athletic attempted this by asking betting experts to gauge each candidate's impact against the point spread, if their team were favored by five points on a neutral court before accounting for their absence.
"It's similar to the quarterbacks, and [their] point-spread adjustments are based on the [drop-off between them and the] backup. A lot of this is in relation to what's left remaining on the team," longtime Las Vegas oddsmaker and Circa Sports senior risk manager Jeff Sherman told The Athletic. "That's where Wilson stands out."
Wilson received the highest distinction from each expert interviewed but the value ranged from four to eight points. They also all agreed Wilson's defense separates her, hence why she also is the second favorite to win her fourth Defensive Player of the Year award (+160).

Kameron Johnson gave the Tampa Bay Buccaneers another encouraging look at what he can bring to the return game Saturday night, showing the type of burst and explosiveness that can make him a difference-maker throughout the 2026 season. Johnson had one kickoff return against the Kansas City Chiefs, taking it 20 yards to the Kansas City 31-yard line and giving Tampa Bay solid starting field position. He also added two punt returns for 24 yards.
The numbers weren't overwhelming, but the flashes were there. Johnson looked decisive with the football in his hands and showed the ability to get north quickly rather than spending too much time searching for an opening. In 2025, he averaged 25.4 yards on 27 kickoff returns and 11.2 yards on 26 punt returns. He also produced Tampa Bay's two longest kick returns of the season, going for 37 and 44 yards, while earning NFC Special Teams Player of the Week honors.
His work against Kansas City was also encouraging because of his offensive contributions. Johnson caught four passes for 56 yards, including a 22-yard reception, while showing that his ability with the ball isn't limited to special teams. He was involved early, catching an 11-yard pass from Jake Browning before later hauling in a 22-yard completion in the third quarter. That combination could make Johnson particularly useful for Tampa Bay. His primary job is returning kicks and punts, but if he continues showing that kind of ability as a receiver, the Buccaneers have another way to get him involved without asking him to become a major part of the offense. If Johnson can consistently turn returns into positive field position while making occasional plays on offense, his value to the Buccaneers could extend well beyond what the traditional returner role offers.
