Aug 21 (Reuters) - More than 2,500 people have now died in the Democratic Republic of Congo's Ebola outbreak, which is spreading exponentially in an area larger ‌than France, senior United Nations Ebola coordinator Julien Harneis said on Friday.
Speaking on a video ‌call from the northeastern Congolese city of Bunia, Harneis called for more aid, saying an existing pool of funds is set to run out within weeks.
Health workers there were coming under attack by locals angered and terrified by the outbreak, and were themselves falling sick and dying from the disease, he added.

The surrogate mother who refused an abortion request after the baby she was carrying was diagnosed with a serious heart defect is pressing her legal fight after the newborn underwent lifesaving heart surgery, days after she says he was taken from her just 60 seconds after birth.
McKenna West, an Alaska mother and cardiac nurse who carried the child, said Thursday she is continuing to fight for the baby after she was separated from him moments after giving birth Aug. 12.
"I haven't been allowed to hold this precious baby boy I carried and protected throughout my pregnancy," West wrote in a New York Post op-ed Thursday.
"The only glimpse I got of him was during a very short 60 seconds while his umbilical cord was still connected. As soon as the cord was cut, he was taken away."

A man who was apparently living in an Arizona national forest for eight years was found in an encampment surrounded by about 1,000 pounds of trash, according to officials.
On June 25, two U.S. national forest rangers found the 65-year-old Mark Aaron Gatz, at his illegal campsite at Tonto National Park in central Arizona, according to a probable cause statement. The campsite, located along National Forest System Road 1006, contained a wood-burning fire.
Gatz told the officers he had been living in that location for two years and had been living in the Payson Pine area of the forest for a total of eight years, according to the statement.

Federal regulations limit camping in national forests to 14 days within a 30-day period, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Length of camping time is limited in order to protect natural resources from degradation and ensure fair access to all visitors, according to the USDA.
