Charlotte Henrich gave her mother a birthday to remember by qualifying for the 400m final in her first Games.
Henrich finished second in her heat in a time of 52.13 seconds behind Nigeria's Ella Onojuvwevwo to qualify eighth fastest for Saturday afternoon's final.
Earlier there was delight for Ava Lloyd, who is also on Games debut, when she qualified for the final of the women's mile with a personal best time of four minutes 31.21 seconds.
But there was disappointment in the same event for athletics co-captain Melissa Courtney-Bryant, who finished seventh in her heat, a spot outside the qualification places.
The 32-year-old was touch and go to make the start line in the first place after injury-hit preparations.

Indiana Fever forward Sophie Cunningham has called the confrontation between a Seattle Storm co-owner and two teenage girls during their WNBA game this week "truly embarrassing." She noted that disagreement on the participation of transgender individuals in women's sports is acceptable.
Cunningham made the remarks on a recent post on X late Wednesday. In her post, she complimented the two girls and berated the executive.
"I truly believe there is a safe ****** e and love for EVERYBODY. Biological girls, biological boys, trans women, and trans men. Everyone is welcome at my table! You can disagree and still be kind," Cunningham wrote. "Bravo to those girls for standing up for what they believe. You'll be hearing from me soon. Yay for gifts. Truly embarrassing of the co-owner. Unfortunately shows the type of leader she is."
Cunningham posted on X following an incident that occurred Tuesday evening in Climate Pledge Arena during their 105-95 victory over Storm. According to podcaster Brandi Kruse, who was present with the girls, Storm minority owner Celeste Keaton screamed at the girls who were holding handmade posters thanking Cunningham for speaking out on the girls' behalf.
According to yoursourceone.com, two 16-year-old girls seated courtside said they were cheering for both teams and were respectful before the encounter. The two girls wore shirts from XX-XY Athletics, which advocates for ****** -based categories in women's sports. Kansas City Chiefs linebacker Nick Bolton spoke with reporters after practice on Wednesday at Missouri Western State University. He expressed his appreciation for being named a new inductee into the Missouri Athletic Hall of Fame.
"Coming from Texas, Coach (Barry) Odom took a chance on me. I was offered about two weeks before signing day, so I told him, man-to-man, I'm going to give this program everything I've got for giving me a chance. Looking back on it - what is it? from nine years ago on the first day in the building," said Bolton, "So yeah, super proud. Super proud to be a the true son in the University of Missouri. This place has been my home, let me be myself, allowed me to grow into my own and grow into a man. So yeah, man, I was super excited."
Bolton had another impressive season in 2025, leading the Chiefs with 154 total tackles, along with a sack and an interception. He was selected as an alternate for the 2026 Pro Bowl Games. During his college football career at Missouri, Bolton was named First-Team All-SEC in 2019 and 2020 and Second-Team All-American in 2020.

St Mirren manager Craig McLeish faces being disciplined by the Scottish FA following comments made following his side's 1-0 defeat by Dunfermline Athletic in the Premier Sports Cup on Sunday.
Speaking on Premier Sports afterwards, the 36-year-old questioned decisions by the match officials and asked who referee Sean Murdoch played for.
The 39-year-old had two spells as a goalkeeper with Dunfermline before becoming an official.
McLeish has now been called to a hearing on Thursday, 27 August to hear a notice of complaint over "Disciplinary Rule 72".
That rule says no club official should criticise a match official "in such a way as to indicate bias or incompetence" or make comments "which impinge on his character".

Hunting season. Greenard's absence pushed Jalyx Hunt into the starting spot at right outside linebacker opposite Nolan Smith Jr. Hunt will likely play as many snaps as the other two this season. There's an argument to be made that he should get more playing time than Smith. Nevertheless, he took advantage of his opportunities with Greenard out. Hunt shot into the backfield unblocked and forced Hurts to check down to Cooper on one play-action pass that came from under center. He blew up tight end Dallas Goedert with an edge rush and Hurts had to hurry a dump to Bigsby that wasn't caught. And he beat Mailata on back-to-back rushes — one with an inside move and the other from the outside — that blew up pass plays.

Have you ever wondered how much money it would cost to buy a college football powerhouse like the Florida State Seminoles? It's a neat thought experiment at the very least, as neither you nor I will ever be able to do this in actuality.
Nevertheless, The Athletic recently released a piece theorizing the valuation of all 138 FBS teams in the nation, and Florida State ranked as the 20th most valuable program in the country with an $819 million price tag.
Last year, FSU was valued at $867 million, a $48 million decline year-over-year. This is almost certainly having to do with the back-to-back losing seasons and with the ACC conference television deal that FSU and the rest of the ACC have been concerned about for many years now.
At No. 1 is the Texas Longhorns with a $2.46 billion valuation. The top ACC team is Miami, at $950 million (up from $604 million last year!) The Florida Gators were valued at $1.16 billion.

Contrary to the other reports from France on Tuesday, Fabrice Hawkins of RMC Sport claims Bradley Barcola hasn't reached a contract agreement with Liverpool.
Yet Hawkins adds that Barcola has made Liverpool his priority if he leaves Paris Saint-Germain, so it seems such an agreement would be largely a formality.

Wales have collected 15 medals so far at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow with two gold, five silvers and eight bronze medals.
There are four more guaranteed medals after boxers Rosie Eccles, Owain Harris-Allan, Orlando Holley-Sotomi and Connor Williams reached Friday's semi-finals and will therefore win at least a bronze.
Wales' most successful Games were on the Gold Coast in 2018 where they won home 36 medals, including 10 golds, 12 silvers and 14 bronze, but the streamlined nature of this Glasgow event makes it difficult to compare.
The 2026 medals include six in swimming, four in athletics, three in artistic gymnastics, and one each in bowls and weightlifting.
The swimming relay podium position count as one medal per race but all the competitors who took part in the heat or finals of that event will be given a medal. That means 13 Welsh swimmers leave Glasgow with medals.

Rangers midfielder Paul Nsio has joined St Mirren on a season-long loan, with Buddies manager Craig McLeish saying the 20-year-old brings the "calibre, physical attributes and athleticism" lacking in their own academy at present.
London-born Nsio spent last season on loan to Raith Rovers and helped the Kirkcaldy side win the Challenge Cup in April, making 31 appearances and being voted the club's young player of the year.
McLeish was attracted to the player's versatility, telling St Mirren's website: "He's had a really strong pre-season with Rangers. He started finding himself playing at right-back as well.
"We know he can play as a six and can play higher up as an eight in midfield, so he gives us a number of different options to use him.
"That versatility is a big part of bringing Paul in. His signing adds physicality to the group as well.

So, if we don't have [resources] in place to retain first our best, we're going to be behind consistently," he said. "A dedicated facility also improves our operational capabilities every day, including [with] recovery [and] film."

Eddie Howe will reportedly leave Newcastle United in the coming days, less than a month before the start of the new Premier League season.

Utah and Brigham Young are the flagship universities in the Beehive State. Most of the success in college athletics comes from those two schools. However, there are five other institutions in the state that play in Division I that are worthy of attention.
Yes, the exercise of recognizing the 10 greatest college athletes who played in Utah is going to focus on the Utes and Cougars, who both have taken a circuitous patch to eventually reach their current membership in the Big 12 Conference. The Cougars boast a Heisman Trophy winner and several other well-known quarterbacks. The Utes have their own notable success in multiple sports.

But the list is also going to include some other standouts who didn't play on the biggest stage in the state. Utah State and Weber State respectively produced a Pro Football Hall of Famer who also gained notoriety outside the sporting world and a future Basketball Hall of Famer.
The only Heisman Trophy winner from one of Utah's schools, Detmer was one of the most prolific passers in college football history. He threw for 15,031 yards and 121 touchdowns while setting 59 NCAA records in his time with the Cougars. His biggest moment from the 1990 season came against No. 1 Miami when he passed for 406 yards in an upset of the Hurricanes that kick-started his Heisman run.

Bayside High football opened practice July 28 before the sun rose as the Bears begin preparation for their third season playing in the Sunshine State Athletic **** ociation.
Last year, Bayside reached the SSAA Atlantic state playoffs for the second year in a row. It finished the season 3-8 after losing to eventual state champions American Heritage (Delray Beach) in the first round.
"I think we had a rough year. We went to the playoffs and played a really good American Heritage team down there. They're heads and shoulders above where we are. That's kind of our goal to be like them," Bayside head coach Billy Miller said. "We feel like in our program we learn from adversity. That's what allows you to grow. When we're able to do that and apply that to this year, we feel like it's going to pay dividends for us."
Miller said he's been pleased with the offseason program and the work the players have put in. The Bears will be young this season with only a dozen seniors on the roster. Consistency will be the key, according to Miller.
"There were flashes last year where we looked really, really good and then there were times that we just looked like we had never seen a football," Miller said. "We've got to find that consistency and teach kids that come in and stack days. It's easy to be good one time, but it's difficult to be good all the time. That's a learned behavior."

WSL Football revealed the 2026/2027 Barclays Women's Super League fixtures this morning via an official press release.
The pick of the opening weekend's games sees big-spending London City Lionesses play host to Manchester United at The Copperjax Community Stadium in Bromley. Both clubs will be chasing European qualification this season and potentially more.
Other notable fixtures see Chelsea play host to Aston Villa while **** nal go to Brighton & Hove Albion. There's also a London derby between Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham United.

Matthias Jaissle is in pole position to replace Eddie Howe as Newcastle manager – just three weeks out from the new Premier League season.
Howe is leaving his role as Magpies head coach after five years in charge, with the 48-year-old English coach keen to take a break from football. Newcastle lost 4-1 to Bristol City in a pre-season game on Wednesday.

Glasgow hosts a slimmed-down version of the Commonwealth Games as athletes from 74 nations and territories compete for gold in the Scottish city.
Glasgow stepped in after the Australian state of Victoria backed out three years ago due to the cost of hosting the Games.
The 10-sport programme, including six Para sports, will feature athletics, gymnastics, cycling and swimming - and will take place across four Glasgow venues.

WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — Andrew Monasterio hit a two-run home run in the 10th inning and the Boston Red Sox held on to beat the Athletics 4-2 on Wednesday night.
Monasterio and Caleb Durbin each had three hits and Jahmal Jones also homered to lead the Red Sox to a win at Sutter Health Park a night after their road winning streak ended at 10 games.
The Red Sox won despite stranding six runners over the three innings prior to Monasterio's winner.
With Romy Gonzalez at second to begin the 10th, Monasterio crushed a 2-0 fastball off Jose Suarez (1-3) as many fans wearing Red Sox jerseys cheered in the A's home stadium.

The numbers tell one side of the story for Joel Piroe. 19 goals. Four ***** ists. 45 appearances. Top scorer in the Championship in 2024/25 and the main engine behind getting Leeds United back to the big time. Yet, stroll around West Yorkshire right now, and you quickly realise statistics mean precious little when a manager's mind is made up that he is a low-priority man. Daniel Farke wants a new leading man. Simple as that.
Farke wants a traditional centre-forward to hold up the ball, bully centre-backs, and trigger the team's pressing system off the ball. They have Dominic Calvert-Lewin for that. That leaves Joel Piroe in a tough spot.
Despite doing everything asked of him last season, the 26-year-old Dutchman finds himself pushed right to the edge of the first-team picture. Farke clearly harbours doubts about whether Piroe has the raw pace, athletic engine, and mobility required to lead the line in the top flight.
With just 12 months remaining on his contract at Elland Road, the hierarchy seems open to business. A cut-price departure before deadline day is now a genuine possibility, with Birmingham City already keeping close tabs on the situation.

Luis Arraez and Robbie Ray are the two headliners as rental options, but Heliot Ramos is another player who could fetch some legitimate trade interest. However, the Giants might also entertain trade offers on some expensive veterans this summer.
For MLB insider Andy McCullough of The Athletic, he would be "shocked" if the Giants traded $313.5 million slugger Rafael Devers at the trade deadline for a simple reason: his contract.
"I would be absolutely shocked - shocked! - if the Giants could move Devers' contract," McCullough writes.

Jul. 29—Multiple schools in the Miami Valley have indicated they do not plan to add girls flag football to their list of athletic programs.
Cox First Media surveyed area high schools about their interest in offering girls flag football as a varsity activity following its approval by the OHSAA as its 29th sport. No area school that responded to the survey provided a "yes"-type response outside of the schools that already offer the sport.
School administrators did provide positive feedback on the sport's growth and acceptance by the OHSAA.
Northmont athletic director Micah Harding indicated the school is not in a position to add any new programs as it attempts to avoid further expenses, but believes it could be something that is explored in a better financial situation.
Sustainability is also on the mind when it comes to growth. Miamisburg AD Jason Shade believes it would be difficult to ensure a program could make it through its infancy due to declining enrollment and a low percentage of upperclassmen females.

It's been almost four weeks since Shohei Ohtani last pitched in a game, still managing the left knee inflammation that still isn't 100 percent. But that's not the only injury the Dodgers superstar is dealing with.
After Tuesday night's game, Ohtani revealed that his right bicep has also been bothering him. That was part of the reason that his planned bullpen session over the weekend in New York was scrapped.
"It started with the knee, and the bicep thing started when he took a swing — I don't know, three or four weeks ago. Then as we got to the break we wanted him to rest his knee, to rest his body and arm. Then as he started ramping back up, in the bullpen … it just wasn't responding. Nor was his knee," manager Dave Roberts told reporters Tuesday night, as shown on SportsNet LA. "There is an effect from the lower half to the compromising of the upper half. So trying to mitigate that, we stopped the throwing, stopped the bullpens, trying to take care of the knee and hopefully not try to create velocity with the arm that's not 100 percent."
Ken Rosenthal at The Athletic wrote about how Ohtani's injuries, which might prevent him from pitching in October (though the Dodgers insist his rest now is a precaution and that they expect him to pitch in the postseason), could increase the Dodgers likelihood to pursue Tarik Skubal before next Monday's trade deadline.
Ohtani homered and doubled on Tuesday, part of a three-hit game against the Mariners. But he's hitting .250/.307/.500 in July, decent numbers but well below his established norms. Since the All-Star break, Ohtani is hitting .238/.283/.405.

Panthers rookie wide receiver Chris Brazzell was injured in Wednesday's training camp practice and it looks like he's going to be out for an extended period of time.
Brazzell went down during a 7-on-7 drill and had to be carted off the field. Joe Person of TheAthletic.com reports that the third-round pick suffered an LCL tear that is expected to keep him out for up to eight weeks.
Head coach Dave Canales said that Brazzell was held out of a couple of earlier practices because of knee soreness, although Person reports that the injury is not believed to be related to the previous issue.
"It was just something that kind of started to get sore after the first couple of days, and then we just, he mentioned it to us," Canales said, via the team's website. "We started to look at it and we put him through some good recovery stuff and de-loaded him for a couple of days, got him back out there, and he couldn't finish the day."
The Panthers saw linebacker Nic Scourton go down with a torn ACL during practice last week, so it has been a rough start to camp on both sides of the ball for Carolina.

Sloppy defense and ineffective pitching led to a gut-punch loss for the Colorado Rockies Tuesday night. The Rockies had four errors and allowed six walks, making it hard to quell the continuous pressure from the San Diego Padres. Now, the Rockies look to snag a series split to close out the short stint against the Padres.
Gabriel Hughes (0-2, 2.79 ERA) looks to continue the strong start to his young career. Over his three starts, Hughes has proven to be unflappable and capable of handling any type of big league lineup. He has gone at least five innings and allowed three or fewer runs in each start while striking out at least five batters. In his last outing, Hughes battled the Washington Nationals, allowing just one run on five hits over five innings of work. Hughes' cut fastball continues to baffle hitters and when his secondary pitches are working, he can almost look unhittable. The issue he ran into his last time out was that the Nationals ran his pitch count up with an excess of foul **** . That was also what got Michael Lorenzen in trouble yesterday. Either way, Hughes will have to find a way to get ahead of the Padres and work quickly and efficiently to save the bullpen.
The Padres announced that Kyle Hart (0-2, 5.21 ERA) will make the start today. A starter for most of his professional career, Hart has mostly been used as a reliever by the Padres at the big league level. In 27 appearances this season, including two starts as an opener, Hart has allowed 24 runs over 38 innings with 33 strikeouts and 12 walks. His last time out, Hart tossed two scoreless innings against the Miami Marlins and in the outing before that he started against Athletics and threw a scoreless inning. He has faced the Rockies three times this season, allowing three runs on four hits over 5.2 innings of work. In five total outings against the Rockies, he owns a 2.70 ERA in 13.1 innings.
