I'm 67, my husband is 69, and we've been married 38 years. We've lived in the same four-bedroom colonial for 32 of those years. It's paid off and worth $1.5 million. We have another $1.8 million in retirement accounts and savings, plus Social Security and a small pension from his old job. No debt, and our kids are on their own.
So this isn't a money problem, but we can't talk about retirement anymore without it turning into a fight. He wants to buy something for $600,000 now that we are empty-nesters, and invest the rest. He has a spreadsheet. I've seen it open on the laptop at the kitchen table at 11 p.m., with property taxes, insurance and the lawn guy all in little columns.
My spouse was awarded $90,000 from my 401(k) in our divorce. How is that fair?

Shell plc (NYSE:SHEL) is a global group of energy and petrochemical companies with a presence in over 70 countries. The stock has delivered gains of over 23% since the beginning of 2026 and even hit its all-time high earlier in March, driven primarily by soaring oil prices and solid earnings amid supply disruptions in the Middle East.
Following a slight pullback over the last few months, Shell has started to regain momentum, and Morgan Stanley expects the rally to continue. On September 3, the investment bank upgraded SHEL from 'Equal Weight' to 'Overweight', while also raising its price target from $81.60 to $101.30. The target boost implies an upside of 9% from the current levels and even exceeds Shell's previous record high of almost $95 per share achieved earlier this year.
Morgan Stanley noted that the concerns surrounding Shell's long-term resource longevity have now eased, with the company now positioned to sustain production growth through 2030 and stabilize output thereafter. The ******* yst firm believes that while the stock has been weighed down due to its dividend policy, there is now "potential for a significant acceleration. As a result, Morgan Stanley promoted SHEL to top-pick status.
Shell completed the acquisition of ARC Resources earlier this month, addressing the resource-depletion concerns that have weighed down its valuation. The $16.4 billion deal has significantly expanded the energy giant's gas reserves and will boost its production by 370,000 boed. Additionally, the strategic move expands Shell's exposure to the North American gas market and bolsters its position in a region that is emerging as a key player in the global LNG supply.
Shell's recent upstream investments provide further support to Morgan Stanley's bullish thesis. The company announced earlier this month that it had agreed to acquire a 30% interest in BP's Conifer exploration prospect in the US Gulf, and a 50% stake in the Tupinamba exploration block in Brazil's Santos Basin. Additionally, it also recently signed a preliminary agreement for the acquisition of production rights over Ghana's South Deepwater Tano Cape Three Points ‌oil and gas block.

ResMed Inc. (NYSE:RMD) is well positioned to benefit from the long-term growth of the global obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) treatment market. Likewise, the company remains well positioned to benefit from growing awareness and penetration in the global market, backed by a robust product portfolio.
The company's OSA portfolio includes CPAP and APAP machines, led by the AirSense platform. The AirSense 10 series is one of the most widely used CPAP and APAP machine series. Monkey Business Images/Shutterstock.com
In the fourth quarter of fiscal 2026, ResMed's revenue increased 9% year over year to $1.5 billion, supported by strong demand for sleep devices, masks, and accessories. Americas device revenue increased 6%, while total Americas Sleep and Breathing Health revenue rose 8%. Americas masks and other revenue increased 10%. The stronger performance is particularly important as it highlights the ability to monetize the installed patient base beyond the initial device purchase.

Volkswagen has dramatically cut its 2026 profit outlook as deteriorating business in China, restructuring costs and a multibillion-euro writedown at Porsche pile pressure on Europe's largest automaker.
The German carmaker now expects an operating margin of no more than 1% this year, down from its previous forecast of at least 4%, according to Bloomberg. Volkswagen shares fell more than 7% following the announcement, dragging other automakers lower.
VW expects around €10 billion ($11.5 billion) in charges this year, including restructuring costs ****** ociated with workforce reductions and writedowns on Chinese ****** ets. The total includes a €6-billion writedown related to Porsche, reflecting revised long-term expectations for the sports-car maker.
Excluding the exceptional charges, Volkswagen said its operating margin would be around 4%.
China represents one of the biggest challenges. Volkswagen CFO Arno Antlitz said the market has contracted by around 20%, with no stabilization currently in sight. Chinese automakers are simultaneously taking domestic market share and expanding into Europe with competitively priced electric vehicles.

PepsiCo (PEP) has gone nowhere for a year, down 1.8% over the past twelve months while the S&P 500 returned 16.6%. At about $135 a share it trades at 17.7 times earnings, against an S&P 500 median of 22.5. A big cash generator priced below the market is what value buyers hunt for, so is this discount impatience or a verdict?
PepsiCo sells snacks and drinks everywhere consumer staples get sold: grocery aisles, convenience and gas stations, and the away-from-home locations it keeps adding. That reach turns into cash: free cash flow over the trailing twelve months was $9.28 billion, a 5.0% yield.
None of the recent numbers look like a business in trouble. Revenue over the trailing twelve months grew 5.6%, and the operating margin is holding at 15.0% against an S&P 500 median of 18.6%. Management says global volumes grew in both foods and beverages in the first half of 2026, the fastest growth in volume since 2022.
Widen the window and the picture changes. PepsiCo's revenue grew 5.6% over the trailing twelve months against an S&P 500 median of 8.3%, and its three-year average is just 2.5% a year. The trailing twelve months ran hotter, but one window is not a pace, and the pace is what the market pays for.
The company lowered prices in the U.S. early in 2026 to get volume moving. Management says salty snacks went from falling volume to rising volume and PepsiCo gained share, but volume in the second quarter of 2026 fell short of what it expected, which it blames on a consumer hurt by higher gas prices and on delays executing the price investment at some customers. None of this is lost on the market: it is pricing a company that grows slowly and has just spent money trying to grow faster. The problem sits in North America, while the international business stayed strong.

By Anna Szymanski
Sept 16 (Reuters) - An unsettled few days set the scene for the week's main event: the Federal Reserve's policy decision. Markets overwhelmingly expect a quarter-point rate hike, the central bank's first since 2023, against the backdrop of resurgent oil prices and a 10-year Treasury yield that's recently breached the ‌important 5% mark.
A rate increase could put Fed Chair Kevin Warsh on a collision course with the White House, given President Donald Trump's continued preference for easing ‌policy. But given all the economic data supporting calls for a hike, Warsh risks losing credibility if the central bank stays on hold.
Today's decision - and the messaging surrounding it - will be a major test for Warsh. The Fed chair struck a hawkish tone at Jackson Hole last month and, with U.S. inflation still running above target and the unemployment rate still low, policymakers risk undermining their credibility if they don't follow through and lift the benchmark rate to the 3.75%-4.00% range.
That's as Donald Trump continues to push for the U.S. to have the lowest borrowing costs in the world. The U.S. president recently threatened to stop trading with some countries if the Fed does not cut rates, though markets have not taken that threat very seriously.

On September 10, Shoe Station Group (NASDAQ:SHOE) held its first earnings call under its new name, and the numbers told a story of a company still finding its footing. Second quarter net sales fell 7.2% to $284.3 million from $306.4 million a year earlier, with comparable sales down 7.1%. But buried in the report was a sharper signal: August comparable sales improved to a 2.7% decline, a real jump from the second quarter's pace, and management is pointing to store-by-store product changes as the reason why.
Shoe Station's turnaround argument rests on giving up the idea that every store should look the same. Interim CEO Clifton Sifford said the company had been running nearly identical ***** ortments across its stores even though its two banners serve very different customers, and that approach stopped working. The shift already shows up in the numbers. Once the company localized its athletic ***** ortments ahead of back-to-school, adult athletic sales moved from a low single-digit decline in the second quarter to a low single-digit increase in August.
Running shoes comped positive in both men's and women's categories, and men's work boots, a replenishment category with loyal repeat buyers, grew 2%. Management believes this fall's boot lineup is the best it has fielded in years, heading into what Sifford expects to be a bigger nonathletic fashion cycle. E-commerce sales grew 18.8% even as store traffic fell, and in-store conversion actually improved, evidence that customers who show up are buying; they just are not showing up in the same numbers yet. The company also ended the quarter debt-free with $131.6 million in cash, up $39.7 million from a year ago, giving it room to fund the localized rollout without straining the balance sheet.
The flip side is that the entire second quarter was ugly across the board. Shoe Carnival branded stores, still 63% of revenue, saw sales fall 6.5%, while the newly converted Shoe Station banner dropped 8.4%. Gross profit margin fell 690 basis points to 31.9%, a mix of a promotional footwear market and management's decision to accelerate liquidation of aged inventory, trading margin for cash. That combination cut net income to $6.3 million, or $0.23 per diluted share, down from $19.2 million and $0.70 a year earlier.
Management is not projecting relief anytime soon. Sifford said plainly, "We are not ***** uming the environment improves," and CFO Kerry Jackson noted that gross margins in fiscal August were still running below last year's levels at a pace comparable to the second quarter. Full-year gross margin guidance of 32.5% to 32.7% implies 390 to 410 basis points of compression for the year. Store impairment charges reached $6.7 million on 11 stores year to date, and management has already conceded that the core problem is not price, since conversion rates rose while total customer visits kept falling. That points to a marketing and trust problem rather than a demand problem, and fixing it will take more tha

XPO, Inc. (NYSE:XPO) reported that preliminary August 2026 North American less-than-truckload, or LTL, tonnage per day increased 3.7% from a year earlier. Shipments per day rose 5.7%, while average weight per shipment declined 1.8%. Final July figures showed tonnage per day increasing 5.8%, shipments per day rising 5.9%, and weight per shipment slipping 0.2%.
The two months indicate stronger shipment activity, but August's wider gap between shipment and tonnage growth points to lighter freight. The investment question is whether XPO, Inc. (NYSE:XPO) can convert additional shipments into better network density and fixed-cost absorption without allowing extra handling costs to dilute margins.
Higher shipment counts can improve the utilization of routes, service centers, dock doors, and equipment. XPO, Inc. (NYSE:XPO) operates an ****** et-based North American LTL network that moves approximately 16 billion pounds of freight annually. More shipments moving through that infrastructure can spread terminal, technology, and equipment costs across a larger revenue base.
The second quarter provides evidence that XPO, Inc. (NYSE:XPO) has recently translated volume and pricing growth into stronger economics. North American LTL revenue increased 15.2% to $1.43 billion. Fuel-surcharge revenue accounted for part of that increase, rising to $314 million from $183 million. Separately, yield excluding fuel increased 4.4%, shipments per day rose 2.8%, and tonnage per day increased 1.0%.
XPO, Inc. (NYSE:XPO) reported a company-defined non-GAAP adjusted operating ratio of 79.9%, an improvement of 300 basis points. XPO, Inc. (NYSE:XPO) calculates adjusted operating ratio as one minus adjusted operating income divided by segment revenue, using unrounded amounts. Adjusted operating income removes amortization and restructuring costs and adjusts for gains on real estate transactions. XPO, Inc. (NYSE:XPO) also reported a damage claims ratio below 0.2%.

Sector allocation and stock selection drove performance. The sustainability tools, including the Impax Sustainability Lens and Corporate Resilience framework, contributed positively. Equity markets rallied, with both the S&P 500 and Nasdaq reaching new highs before retreating. A key trend was rotation into AI and tech stocks, supported by mega-cap earnings and data center investments (US$750bn to US$1tn). In the second half of 2026, markets may remain volatile amid debates on AI adoption pace and economic momentum. However, growth tied to energy security and efficiency remains compelling, with demand for power, grid, and resource-efficient solutions supporting companies that benefit. The team focuses on businesses with strong growth, sound management, and attractive valuations, adjusting holdings as needed. This approach aims to build well-diversified, differentiated portfolios. Also, please check the fund's top five holdings for its best picks in 2026.
In its second-quarter 2026 investor letter, Impax US Sustainable Economy Fund highlighted Micron Technology, Inc. (NASDAQ:MU) as a material contributor to performance. The stock surged during the quarter as demand for high-bandwidth memory used in AI training and inference applications accelerated sharply. The data center build-out by hyperscale providers drove a significant uplift to Micron's pricing power and volume outlook, and the company revised its forward guidance meaningfully higher, prompting a sharp re-rating from investors."

CNBC reported that Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) announced new Mac Mini and Mac Studio models with updated chips built for AI workloads.
The Mac Mini now offers Apple's new M6 chip, its first built on a 2-nanometer process, or an M5 Pro, and starts at $899, up from $799 for the prior model. Apple says the M6 delivers 4 times faster AI performance and 2 times faster graphics than the M4 model it replaces, while the M5 Pro can process large language model prompts up to 8.5 times faster than the M2 Pro version. The Mac Studio now starts at $2,499 with the M5 Max chip or $5,499 with the new M5 Ultra, up from $5,299 for the prior Ultra model, and multiple M5 Ultra units can be linked together to pool memory for running large AI models. "With these frameworks and new chips, developers can run and fine-tune large AI models locally on their Mac," Apple said. Preorders opened Tuesday, with units shipping September 22.
The performance gains here are substantial, not incremental. The M6 chip delivers 4 times faster AI performance and is Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL)'s first chip built on a 2-nanometer process. The M5 Pro configuration processes large language model prompts 8.5 times faster than the model it replaces, Apple's own specifications show, giving Apple genuine technical claims to back its AI-focused marketing.
Apple is showing pricing power even as component costs rise industry-wide. Despite memory and silicon shortages pushing costs higher across the industry, Apple raised prices on both product lines rather than absorbing the cost pressure itself. It is a sign the company believes demand can bear higher price points.
These desktops are becoming more strategically important to Apple than their revenue alone suggests. It shows how Mac desktops have become a foothold in the AI development world for Apple. It is a showcase for its custom silicon that can influence which platform developers build AI tools on and an ecosystem benefit that extends beyond the sale of any individual machine.

Nvidia rose only 0.8% on September 4, while Astera Labs jumped 9.8% and Marvell gained 7.1%. The comparison was consistent with investors broadening the AI trade beyond accelerators into connectivity suppliers. Astera's rally also coincided with speculation that the company could be added to the S&P 500, although it was ultimately not selected in the September rebalance. Bigger accelerator clusters need retimers, switches, optical links, and custom silicon to move data without leaving expensive processors idle. Astera Labs, Inc. (NASDAQ:ALAB) and Marvell Technology, Inc. (NASDAQ:MRVL) monetize that connectivity bottleneck from different positions.
Photo from Astera Labs
Astera is the focused rack-scale connectivity play. Its second-quarter update said a Q3 production ramp of the Scorpio X-Series 320-lane fabric switch was expected to drive the next revenue inflection, alongside growth opportunities across Aries, Taurus, and Leo. The bull case is content growth: each new generation of AI rack can require more connectivity silicon and software. The bear case is dependence on a concentrated group of hyperscale customers, product-transition timing, and a valuation that ***** umes strong adoption before every design win becomes revenue.
Hedge-fund breadth strengthened before the rally. Insider Monkey counted 73 funds holding Astera Labs, Inc. (NASDAQ:ALAB) at June 30, up from 53 at March 31. Lee Ainslie's Maverick Capital disclosed 1,067,215 shares, 12% more than in Q1. The quarter-end filing cannot show whether Maverick participated in the September move.
Marvell is more diversified. Its data-center business spans custom compute, electro-optics, switching, and interconnect, giving it multiple ways to benefit as cloud companies redesign AI systems. That breadth is the bull case because one customer's architecture can pull several product families. It is also the risk: custom programs can be lumpy, development costs arrive before revenue, and investors may overestimate the near-term contribution of announced wins.

On August 6, Versant Media Group (NASDAQ:VSNT) reported second-quarter 2026 results that capture a company in transition. Revenue slipped 3.8% year over year to $1.64 billion, and net income attributable to Versant tumbled 30.1% to $211 million. Yet the same report included a raised full-year outlook, a third straight quarterly dividend, and a second $100 million stock buyback. For a company barely eight months removed from its separation from Comcast on January 2, the numbers tell two stories at once.
Versant's headline Adjusted EBITDA fell 8.9% to $624 million, but measured against the prior year's Standalone Adjusted EBITDA, the more relevant apples-to-apples baseline, EBITDA actually grew 3.0%. That gap matters because it shows the company trimming programming and overhead costs faster than legacy revenue is shrinking. Management leaned into that momentum by raising full-year revenue guidance to $6.2 billion to $6.45 billion and Adjusted EBITDA guidance to $1.9 billion to $2.05 billion, while holding free cash flow guidance at $1.0 billion to $1.2 billion.
The growth story lives outside the traditional cable bundle. Platforms revenue, excluding the divested SportsEngine business, climbed 9.3% on the strength of Fandango and GolfNow, and Versant used the quarter to lock in two multi-year distribution renewals with major partners in the US and Canada. Sports rights remain the anchor: PGA TOUR coverage delivered its best second quarter since 2020, USA Network's WNBA broadcasts drew three of the quarter's most watched games across cable and streaming, and a new five-year Bundesliga deal adds more than 300 live matches a year, with at least 30 landing on USA Network. MS NOW backed that up digitally, posting audience growth for a seventh straight month through June and racking up close to 3 billion YouTube and TikTok views so far this year. Layer in the Full Swing acquisition completed after quarter-end, and Versant is placing real bets beyond linear television.
The pressure driving those buybacks and that raised guidance is real. Total revenue fell 3.8% to $1.64 billion, or 2.8% excluding SportsEngine, and linear distribution revenue, still the largest piece of the business, dropped 6.3% as subscribers kept leaving traditional pay TV. Rate increases only partly offset that erosion, and advertising revenue slipped another 0.6% even with better ratings and a boost from a recent acquisition.
The bottom line felt it more than the top line. Net income attributable to Versant fell $91 million to $211 million, and the company pointed to higher costs of running as a standalone public company, new interest expense tied to debt taken on after leaving Comcast, and a bigger tax bill linked to the SportsEngine sale. Those are the direct costs of standing alone rather than sitting inside a larger conglomerate. Versant's prior year financial statements were also built from Comcast's carve out accounting rather than results as a true independent company, so s

The hazard ratio of 0.40 represented a 60% lower hazard of death during trial follow-up. Median progression-free survival was 7.2 months versus 3.6 months, while objective response rates were 30% and 11%, respectively.
The survival benefit gives Rasonque a strong clinical argument for reimbursement. Pancreatic cancer is aggressive, treatment options after progression are limited, and Rasonque improved overall survival, progression-free survival, and response rates in a randomized comparison. Oral dosing may also reduce the burden of intravenous chemotherapy.
The approved population is broader than a single mutation-defined subgroup. Rasonque can be prescribed with or without an identified RAS tumor mutation and does not require a companion diagnostic. That reduces testing friction within the approved treatment setting.

Nvidia (NVDA) CEO Jensen Huang has a message for investors worried about hyperscaler AI spending: The boom is nowhere near over.
Microsoft (MSFT), Amazon (AMZN), and Alphabet (GOOG) (GOOGL) continue to pour billions into data centers, but some investors fear those enormous capital expenditures could eventually peak and pressure Nvidia's growth.

Many crypto platforms let you trade digital coins and not much else. Uphold takes a wider swing by letting you trade more than 250 cryptocurrencies, four precious metals, and dozens of national currencies. It even allows you to directly trade one for another.
What makes that possible is what Uphold calls its anything-to-anything model, which moves you directly from bitcoin to gold, or from silver to euros, without forcing a sale in dollars in between. Very few platforms work this way.
That wide selection costs you, though. Uphold folds its fee into a spread on every trade, so the price you see already includes its cut, and that all-in price runs higher than several rivals. You also won't find the advanced trading tools that active traders use or any stocks and exchange-traded funds (ETFs).
Let's take a closer look at what Uphold delivers and where it falls flat based on our hands-on testing.

Silver (SI=F) December futures opened at $66.80 per ounce on Monday, August 31, 2026, down 1.4% from Friday's closing price. Silver rose this morning, reaching $67.84 as of 8:39 a.m. ET.
Silver prices have been steadily declining since the start of last week and sank even lower at the open this morning as expectations for a Fed rate increase rise.
On Friday, Fed Chair Kevin Warsh reiterated the Fed's mandate for lowering prices, saying the Fed had "work to do":
"We must be confident that underlying inflation is moving to our objective, clearly and at sufficient speed. Otherwise, we have work to do," Warsh said in his first speech as chairman in Jackson Hole, Wyo. "It is the Fed's job to deliver stable prices."

Lantronix (NASDAQ:LTRX) closed out fiscal 2026 looking like a different company than it was a year earlier. Revenue for the fourth quarter, which ended June 30 and was reported on August 26, came in at $31.2 million, up 8% from a year ago, while non-GAAP earnings per share jumped 300% to $0.04. The company also finished the year debt-free with $60.5 million in cash. What used to be a niche embedded-connectivity supplier is now leaning hard into drones, edge AI compute, and recurring software revenue.
That shift shows up most clearly in unmanned systems. A year ago the company had roughly 10 active engagements in the category; by the end of fiscal 2026 that number had tripled to over 30. Unmanned systems revenue hit $12.6 million for the year, above the midpoint of the $10 million to $14 million range management had guided to, and embedded IoT solutions overall grew 34% on the strength of that business.
CEO Saleel Awsare pointed to the company's US Army short-range reconnaissance program win, tied to Teal Drones' Black Widow platform and its status as a Blue UAS approved supplier, as proof of its camera tuning and sensor fusion expertise. Management is layering in partnerships too, including a deal with AVT Australia to build its system-on-module tech into gimbal camera payloads and a collaboration with Swarmer that roughly quadruples onboard processing power for Group 1 drones. For fiscal 2027, management expects unmanned systems to reach 15% to 20% of total revenue, more than $25 million.
The balance sheet backs up the ambition: a $44 million capital raise during the quarter helped push cash to $60.5 million while the company paid off its remaining $8.7 million in debt. On top of that, the $11.7 million purchase of Vecima Networks' Industrial IoT business, including the Nero Global Tracking platform and its 125,000 device tags, is expected to add $5.3 million in annual revenue and push software and services to about 10% of total revenue on a pro forma basis, up from 7% to 8% previously.
Not every input is cooperating. CFO Brent Stringham flagged that memory availability has tightened and prices have risen as AI infrastructure and hyperscale data centers absorb a growing share of global supply, a dynamic he described as industry-wide rather than specific to Lantronix. The company's IoT Systems Solutions segment, which grew 16% sequentially to $15.3 million, was still recovering from federal government shutdowns that slowed procurement in the prior two quarters, a reminder of how exposed that business is to Washington's budget calendar. And despite the non-GAAP profit, Lantronix posted a GAAP net loss of $269,000 for the quarter, an improvement from the $2.6 million loss a year earlier but still red ink.

When hip-hop icon and Wu-Tang founder Raekwon the Chef marched into the headquarters of Palantir (PLTR) in 2010, he stumbled upon a company that most of us had never heard of.
At that stage, Palantir was just another private Silicon Valley startup. It had a couple hundred employees, a relatively humble valuation of $735 million, and got most of its business through boring government contracts.
