The S&P 500 hit a record Tuesday as it rose for a fourth straight day, supported by rising technology stocks, hopes for a positive earnings season and a pause in oil’s recent surge.
The broad-based index closed higher by 0.58%, its first record closing high since Aug. 13. The Nasdaq Composite also jumped 0.45%. It also hit a record high for the second time this week.
The S&P 500 and the Nasdaq’s gains were overwhelmingly powered by gains in tech companies, such as chipmakers Marvell and Broadcom.
Nvidia, the world’s largest public company, also rose and moved closer to becoming the first company to ever reach $6 trillion in market value. Other trillion-dollar tech stocks also rose Tuesday. Microsoft, Amazon, **** eX, Meta Platforms and Tesla shares all traded in the green.
Investors are also looking forward to the start of the third quarter’s earnings season, which begins in earnest next week with the country’s biggest banks reporting their results.

Trump defended such a move, saying Biden "gave pardons to everyone."
President Donald Trump said in an interview out Thursday that he would be open to pardoning members of his administration, pointing to former President Joe Biden’s blanket pardon to relatives and members of the administration out of concern they would be politically targeted after he left office.
"Yeah, sure, I'd do that," the president answered when asked by TIME magazine earlier this week if he was "considering pardoning members of your administration prior to the end of your term?"
The president further said that Biden "gave pardons to everyone."
Biden issued preemptive pardons to several close family members in the final minutes of his presidency in 2025, saying that his family "has been subjected to unrelenting attacks and threats, motivated solely by a desire to hurt me" and that he had "no reason to believe these attacks will end" after he left office.

(NewsNation) — A new study found that a rare but serious brain condition has been identified in a small number of people taking popular weight-loss drugs such as Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro and Zepbound.
Wernicke encephalopathy is a rare neurological disorder caused by a severe deficiency of vitamin B1, also known as thiamine.
GLP-1 prescriptions for kids up more than 30,000% since 2019
Researchers identified 15 cases reported in 2023 and 2024 among people taking GLP-1 medications containing semaglutide, found in Ozempic and Wegovy, or tirzepatide, found in Mounjaro and Zepbound.
Vitamin B1 is essential for proper nerve function. Without enough of it, patients can develop confusion, problems with balance and coordination, and abnormal eye movements.

Lindsey Brooke Isaacs was asleep at home when police arrived and told the 23-year-old that her car had been involved in a crash that killed three people. She knew they had the wrong person. Her black Dodge Durango showed no obvious collision damage, and she had a receipt showing where she had been.
Still, the investigation eventually led to her being arrested and 13 days in jail. "My heart was in my stomach," Lindsey told me on The CyberGuy Report Podcast at Cyberguy.com/podcast/. "I didn't know what was going on."
Months later, prosecutors dropped all eight felony charges against her and investigators arrested another woman in connection with the crash. Her case now raises a bigger question about how much weight investigators should give license plate camera data when a person's freedom is on the line.

WASHINGTON, Aug 27 (Reuters) - President Donald Trump's administration has issued a memo for universities that seeks to restrict issuance of certain internship work ‌authorizations for international students as the federal government warned that colleges not complying with the regulations may lose certification ‌to enroll foreign students.
The federal memo dated August 24 said the Student and Exchange Visitor Program, which is part of the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency, has "observed a rise in Curricular Practical Training (CPT) authorizations that appear to violate regulatory requirements which permit CPT only where the training is an integral part of an established curriculum."
"Failure to comply with SEVP regulations may result in an institution losing certification to enroll foreign students," the memo said.

NEW DELHI, Aug 26 (Reuters) - A deadly flash flood near Nepal's border with Tibet on Wednesday may have been triggered when the lower part of a glacier broke off and crashed on to the ‌valley floor hundreds of metres below, experts said citing satellite imagery from Planet Labs.
It was not clear what caused the glacier to ‌collapse, but Nepali officials have pointed to an earthquake in the region minutes earlier as a possibility.
Authorities on both sides fear the total number of casualties will be far higher than the nearly 100 bodies so far recovered. More than 300 travellers were missing, Nepal's government has said.
Before-and-after satellite imagery of the region from Planet Labs, reviewed by Reuters, showed lush green mountainside now buried under brown debris and sediment.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – New observations of some of Neptune's moons and rings are providing evidence of a catastrophe that occurred billions of years ago around the solar system's outermost planet in which a Pluto-sized interloper caused a celestial demolition derby.
Researchers used NASA's James Webb ***** e Telescope to examine the composition of three of Neptune's small inner moons — Proteus, Larissa and Galatea — and its inner dusty rings, and detected clay minerals that one might expect to find deep inside certain worlds in the outer reaches of the solar system. These magnesium-rich minerals are known to exist on the dwarf planet Ceres, which orbits in the main asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter, and in some meteorites.
"These minerals require prolonged contact between liquid water and rock to form," said planetary scientist Ryleigh Davis, a postdoctoral researcher at the University of California, San Diego, and lead author of the study published in the journal Science Advances.
"The moons themselves are far too small and cold for that chemistry to have occurred in place, so the clay had to come from somewhere else — the deep interior of a much larger ancient world. Finding this material on Neptune's inner moons points to a catastrophic event in Neptune's past that destroyed those ancient worlds and exposed their deep interiors, with the small moons and rings we see today re-forming from that wreckage," said Davis, who worked on the study while at Caltech.

SOFIA, July 29 (Reuters) - The remains of what is believed to be an ancient mammoth ‌have been revealed in northern Bulgaria, after Danube ‌River water levels receded to a record low level, the BTA news agency reported on Wednesday, citing historians.
The animal's remains were found on Wednesday by a local resident of the Ryahovo village, who noticed the unusual find ‌on the river bed. Villagers then alerted specialists in the Regional History Museum in the nearby town of Ruse.
Museum Director Nikolay Nenov told BTA that experts who were sent to the site recognised a lower jaw, two tusks and possibly a mammoth rib, and that ‌the bones will be removed for further examination on Thursday to establish with accuracy the origin and age of the find.
"I would not call it a sensation, but any discovery of such ancient remains is ‌very important for science," Nenov said, adding it has been long believed that the site was a swamp where the ‌animal probably died thousands of years ago.
Danube levels have fallen to record lows in recent weeks following the summer's prolonged heat waves and drought that have ‌affected rivers across Europe including key waterways such as the Rhine.

Over the course of a year, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has seen a traumatic shooting, abrupt leadership changes and a shattering of its image as a globally respected public health agency.
So by the time the Trump administration started looking for a new director, there was one requirement that topped the search criteria.
"We just need someone who's not crazy," a White House official told CNN amid the lengthy hunt for a nominee that finally culminated with Trump tapping Erica Schwartz, a former deputy surgeon general and retired US Coast Guard officer, for the job in April.
On Wednesday, Schwartz — President Donald Trump's third pick to lead the CDC — appears before the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee to face confirmation. She testifies alongside Sean Kaufman, the president's nominee for ****** istant Secretary of Preparedness and Response.
Schwartz's selection was aimed at bringing stability to the agency after near-constant upheaval that has decimated morale and deeply shaken Americans' faith in the administration's health agenda, senior health officials and others familiar with the matter told CNN at the time.

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani is facing renewed criticism over housing affordability as rents in Manhattan and Brooklyn hit record highs, with conservative commentators arguing that immigration-driven demand is adding pressure to an already tight rental market that the mayor campaigned to ease.
Manhattan's and Brooklyn's median rents reached $5,295 and $4,350, respectively, in June, according to an ***** ysis conducted by the Corcoran Group, a real estate firm. The most recent available data shows roughly 38% of New Yorker residents were born outside the United States, and about 40% of rentals in the city are occupied by foreign-born individuals, though the data does not distinguish between legal and illegal immigration status.
"You declared yourself a sanctuary city. You 'welcomed' hundreds of thousands of illegals. Then you had to find places to put them," conservative radio host Andrew Wilkow wrote on X, reacting to news of increased rents. "That put pressure on housing supply. Shortages create price increases. It's pretty simple."
Biden's Illegal Immigration Surge Caused Higher Rent And Home Prices, Fed Study Finds
A 2003 paper published by the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia found that immigration "pushes up rents and housing values in destination cities," with an immigration inflow equal to 1% of a city's population ***** ociated with about a 1% increase in average rents and housing values. More recently, a paper published by the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas in March found that a 1% increase in illegal immigrants working in a given area corresponded to a 1.4% increase in rental prices because localities did not build enough new housing to match population growth.

When Arvind Jain, the now co-founder of Rubrik and Glean, landed a job at Google, he felt like an "imposter". The engineer had moved to America from a small town in India and suddenly found himself surrounded by MIT and Stanford PhDs. So he made a point of quietly studying those around him.
And one of those people was a product manager who had just joined the company. His name was Sundar Pichai.
"We were together at Google for a long time. I knew him from when he joined as an individual contributor," Jain exclusively told Fortune.
"At Google, we had people who were brilliant, they came from the best schools, they were highly accomplished, and there were some who grew and shone, and then there were others who didn't," he said. "I thought that I got lucky, that somehow I got placed in this group of amazing people… And that was why I was trying to learn and observe what makes one succeed?"
Of course, Pichai ended up being one of those individuals who shone. He became CEO of Google in August 2015, just over a decade after joining the company.

BERLIN (AP) — Temperatures hit record highs from Switzerland to the Czech Republic, Germany and Denmark on Saturday, as a heat wave that baked western European countries this week moves to central and eastern parts of the continent.
Unusually high temperatures were recorded even in the Nordic countries not known for sweltering summers. The Danish Meteorological Institute reported a new record of 37 degrees Celsius (98.6 degrees Fahrenheit) in Ødum north of Aarhus — the warmest day since records began in 1874.
In Switzerland, a record of 38.8 C (101.8 F) was set in the city of Basel. And Germany marked a new high of 41.5 C (106.7 F), in Möckern-Drewitz in Saxony-Anhalt, according to preliminary data by the German Weather Service. The previous record was set a day earlier.
The country's famous Autobahn was overwhelmed, too. In two places outside Berlin, the concrete of the A2 burst due to the high temperatures and the highway had to be closed. Other highway damage was also reported across the country, according to German daily Bild.
Train operator Deutsche Bahn and other rail companies advised against all nonessential travel train travel this weekend.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Vice President JD Vance on Thursday said the Watergate scandal that brought down President Richard Nixon would have been a blip in today's news cycle, and he drew parallels between Nixon and President Donald Trump — arguing that both were targeted by "deep state" forces.
Vance described his admiration for Nixon during a conversation at the Richard Nixon Presidential Library in Yorba Linda, California. Widely expected to be a presidential contender in 2028, Vance spoke at the library while promoting his new book, "Communion."
After talking about the book and his faith journey, Vance shifted to Nixon, saying the legacy of the 37th president is "enjoying a bit of a renaissance."
"If Watergate happened tomorrow, it would be like a 12-hour news story. The idea that it would have taken down a presidency is crazy," Vance said.
He went on: "If you look at the story of how the deep state took down Richard Nixon, it's not all that different from what the same groups of people, the same institutions tried to do to Donald Trump in the first Trump administration."

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — A lawyer who represented Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton for nearly a decade over accusations of corruption and securities fraud is supporting Democrat James Talarico — and not his former client — in one of the biggest U.S. Senate races.
Talarico on Monday drew attention to his campaign winning the endorsement of Houston attorney Dan Cogdell, who was part of Paxton's defense team during the Republican's historic impeachment trial in 2023 that ended in acquittal.
The legal troubles that shadowed Paxton in public office in Texas are a central attack line of Talarico's campaign, though in his endorsement, Cogdell didn't cite concerns about his client's past.
Cogdell said he didn't dislike Paxton as a person and felt that Texas lawmakers were right to eventually acquit the attorney general. But as a politician, Cogdell said, Paxton is too focused on appeasing President Donald Trump.
"I worked my **** off for the man for nine years," Cogdell said in an interview with The **** ociated Press. "But that's a different inquiry. My obligation to Ken ended at the courthouse steps and my obligation as a citizen is to do what I think is the right thing."

TAIPEI, June 6 (Reuters) - Taiwan said on Saturday that a Chinese coast guard ship and a survey ship had carried out the first coordinated operation ‌to "provoke" Taiwan, in waters around strategically located islands in the South China ‌Sea.
The Taiwan-controlled Pratas Islands, a national park toward the northern end of the South China Sea and lightly defended by the coast guard, have emerged as a new pressure point in China's ongoing military and quasi-military operations around Taiwan in an effort to **** ert Beijing's sovereignty claims.
The islands between southern Taiwan and Hong Kong are seen by some security experts as vulnerable to Chinese ‌attack due to their distance - more than 400 km (250 miles) - from Taiwan island.
