A mother whose teenage son died from a rare form of cancer has been sharing his story to raise awareness of the symptoms and keep his memory alive.
Jake Swinscoe, from Salisbury in Wiltshire, died just two weeks before his 14th birthday in April 2024, 10 months after being diagnosed with alveolar rhabdomyosarcoma, an aggressive soft tissue cancer.
His mother Lynsey said before his diagnosis she thought Jake was suffering from hay fever and had no idea a runny nose and watery eyes "could be potential symptoms of cancer".
She said the thing Jake was scared about "wasn't dying" but not being remembered, telling his mum: "I want to be well-known and not forgotten".

Dolly Parton never recovered from the death of her husband, Carl Dean, a friend tells In Touch exclusively.
"It was a bad time for her," Jason Pirro, who worked as the country icon's driver for 58 years, says of Dean's March 2025 death at 82 following an Alzheimer's diagnosis.
"She didn't say much, but she sometimes talked about how much she missed him so much. She didn't want to make a big deal about it because she knew that I knew how she was affected by it," says Pirro, 80, noting that the pair often traveled between their homes in LA and Tennessee to spend time with each other until he got sick.
Over their 60-year love story, they "shared a unique happiness that seemed to sparkle whenever they were together," he adds.
"I think that's why she passed away so soon after he did," Pirro tells In Touch. "She died of a broken heart, but she didn't want to say that because she didn't want people feeling sorry for her."

The Tennessee ***** ans will still commemorate halftime of Sunday's season opener to "CJ2K," but the team announced Friday that it's postponing Chris Johnson's Ring of Honor induction ceremony.
Because of "unforeseen circumstances," Johnson and his family are no longer able to travel to Nashville for the Week 1 game between the ***** ans and the New York Jets, the ***** ans said in a statement.
Johnson is battling ALS, a diagnosis he revealed in June.

New England Patriots wide receiver A.J. Brown did indeed suffer a high-ankle sprain on Wednesday night against the Seattle Seahawks. An MRI taken on Thursday confirmed the initial diagnosis and according to a report by NFL Network's Ian Rapoport suggests that the 29-year-old "[is] expected to be out at least four weeks."
A follow-up report by NFL insider Jordan Schultz put the projected recovery time at around 3-6 weeks, with internal discussions whether or not a move to injured reserve will be necessary.

Pamela Anderson says a doctor told her she probably had only 10 years to live after she was diagnosed with hepatitis C, leaving her terrified about what would happen to her two young sons.
Anderson revisited the diagnosis while accepting amfAR's Award of Courage at the organization's Sept. 6 gala in Venice. She described hepatitis C as a "death sentence" at the time because the treatments then available had not given her the certainty that later antiviral drugs would provide.
She ultimately completed a 12-week antiviral treatment and announced in 2015 that she was free of the virus. During her Venice speech, however, Anderson said the years surrounding the diagnosis affected her decisions and left behind feelings of shame and guilt that did not disappear with the medical result.
The 59-year-old actress ended her remarks by rejecting the victim label attached to difficult periods in her life. "I'm not a victim, I'm a victor," she told the audience. "I'm not the damsel in distress, no matter how easy that role is to play."

COMO, Italy (AP) — Italian soccer club Como has given forward Roberta Picchi a contract extension in what it called a "continued commitment" after she was diagnosed with breast cancer.
Picchi's diagnosis came after she helped Como win promotion to the top tier of Italian women's soccer for the first time last season and weeks before its first women's Serie A game.
"Roberta will now begin her treatment, supported throughout by the club's medical team, who will work closely with the specialists responsible for her care," Como said in a statement on Monday.
"Everyone at Como 1907 is alongside Roberta and will give her and her family all the support they need during the months ahead. As part of that continued commitment, the club has also renewed Roberta's contract until the end of the 2027/28 season."

Starting statin therapy shortly after a type 2 diabetes diagnosis may not only protect the heart — it may also be linked to a lower dementia risk.
A large study presented at the European Society of Cardiology Congress in Munich on Aug. 30 found that adults who began taking a statin within one year of their type 2 diabetes diagnosis had a 15% lower relative risk of developing dementia over 10 years compared to those who did not take the medication within five years.

On August 25, Electromed (NASDAQ:ELMD) reported fiscal fourth-quarter results that extended a streak few small-cap medical device companies can claim: fifteen consecutive quarters of year-over-year revenue and profit growth. Net revenue hit a record $19.4 million, up 11.6% from a year earlier, and diluted earnings per share climbed to $0.39 from $0.25. Those headline numbers look clean, but they arrive alongside a leadership change and a hospital business moving in the opposite direction, which makes the quarter more complicated than the growth streak suggests.
Home care is still the whole story here. Home care revenue reached $17.7 million in the quarter, up 15.2% year over year, and for the full fiscal year it grew 16.3% to $66.6 million. That growth is coming from efficiency, not just headcount: on an annualized basis, home care revenue worked out to $1,145,000 per rep, above the company's own target range of $1 million to $1.1 million. Electromed ended the year with 64 direct sales reps and is targeting 67 filled territories for fiscal 2027, including two hospital account liaisons meant to catch patients as they move from acute care into home-based therapy.
The addressable market behind that growth still looks large. Management estimates roughly 1 million people in the U.S. carry a bronchiectasis diagnosis, yet only about 16% currently use high-frequency chest wall oscillation therapy, leaving close to 800,000 diagnosed patients untreated, plus more than 4 million additional people who may have the condition without a diagnosis at all. Payer access has kept pace with that opportunity.
Electromed closed the fiscal year with 87% of US covered lives under contract after signing 40 new payer agreements and adding 6 million covered lives. Its Smart Order e-prescribing tool handled 45% of fourth-quarter orders and shipped them noticeably faster than fax submissions, which matters as CMS rules phase out fax-based ordering by May 2028. All of this sits on a debt-free balance sheet, with cash growing to $20.5 million even after $3.9 million in share repurchases during the year.
The weaker spots are easy to miss next to those numbers. Hospital revenue fell 29% in the fourth quarter, which CEO James Cunniff attributed to a sales cycle that is "inherently less predictable than our other channels." The distributor channel grew just 2% in the quarter, and combined, the non-home care business grew only 6.7% for the full year versus 16.3% in home care, meaning nearly all of Electromed's growth is coming from one channel. SG&A expenses rose 8.7% to $42.7 million for the year, driven mainly by higher sales, marketing, and reimbursement compensation, and accounts receivable climbed to $29.8 million from $24.7 million as the business scaled up.

After being tagged out following a partial slide, the 21-year-old immediately grabbed at his right foot before eventually getting back to his feet. He was removed from the game the following inning. Texas football will open the season with its top offensive linemen ready to play, head coach Steve Sarkisian said Thursday.
That means left tackle Trevor Goosby and left guard Laurence Seymore III will both play Saturday against visiting Texas State despite missing time in training camp with injuries. Both returned to practice earlier this week, and Sarkisian said both are "good to go" for the 2:30 p.m. kickoff against the Bobcats.
The news on Goosby is especially welcomed since the 6-foot-7, 325-pound senior All-American returns as one of the best pass blockers in the nation and the primary bodyguard for quarterback Arch Manning. Goosby went down with a noncontact knee injury in an Aug. 17 practice, but a diagnosis of a bone bruise instead of a season-ending ligament tear may have been the best news of the summer for Sarkisian and his squad.
