Democrats have regained control of Congress, winning back the U.S. House and Senate as Republican midterm losses mount.
Coming into the night, Republicans held 53 of the Senate's 100 seats, compared with 45 held by Democrats. To wrest back control of the Senate, Democrats needed a net gain of at least four seats. As at 6 a.m. ET on Wednesday, the Democrats had won 54 Senate seats to the GOP's 44.
Democrats won a series of key Senate seats. In Michigan, Abdul El-Sayed defeated Mike Rogers in one of the most closely watched races. James Talarico beat Republican Ken Paxton in Texas, becoming the first Democrat to win a U.S. Senate seat in the Lone Star State since 1988.
Annie Andrews beat GOP Sen. Darline Graham in South Carolina to flip a Senate seat. In Maine, Democrat Troy Jackson defeated incumbent GOP Sen. Susan Collins, putting an end to her three-decade tenure. Sen. Jon Ossoff comfortably won reelection in Georgia. Other Senate seats to flip to the Democratic Party included Roy Cooper in North Carolina and Sherrod Brown in Ohio.
In the 435-seat House, the GOP held 218 seats, compared with 214 held by Democrats. To retake control of the House, Democrats needed a net gain of three seats — and the AP said early Wednesday that the party had exceeded that figure.

Republican Sen. Susan Collins and Democratic challenger Troy Jackson debated for the first time Tuesday in Maine, trading attacks over President Donald Trump, the cost of living and abortion in one of the most closely watched Senate races in the country.
Maine is central to Democrats’ path to the Senate majority as they try to capitalize on Trump’s unpopularity. Jackson tried to do just that Tuesday by tying Collins to Trump, name-checking him at least 20 times in one hour of debating on WGME-TV.
“It matters who you stand with,” Jackson said in his opening statement. “I don’t owe Donald Trump and the billionaires anything. I don’t fight for billionaires like she does.”
Collins, meanwhile, emphasized multiple instances when she opposed the Trump administration.
She also sought to localize the race and pitch her seniority — and her perch as chair of the powerful Senate Appropriations Committee — as a boost to Maine. She touted $1.5 billion in federal funds that she has brought home to the state for 672 projects in the last five years, “from Madawaksa to Kittery, from Eastport to Rumford.”

Black may be one of the safest colors in formal fashion, but the 2026 Venice Film Festival showed how unpredictable it can become in the right hands. Across premieres and ceremonies, stars embraced lace, velvet, satin, sculptural tailoring and elaborate draping. Instead of relying on color to create impact, designers used texture and silhouette to give each outfit a distinctive personality. Laura Dern, Susan Sarandon, Amal Clooney, Maggie Gyllenhaal and Rooney Mara all approached the classic shade differently. Together, their appearances demonstrated why black continues to have such staying power on major red carpets.
Laura Dern embraced intricate detailing for the premiere of Wild Horse Nine. Her sleeveless black Dior gown featured a V neckline, delicate lace and floral embroidery across the upper section. The design transitioned into a fuller shimmering skirt, giving the monochrome look depth through contrasting textures. Black Dior pumps maintained the restrained palette, while a Cartier necklace provided a polished finishing touch.
Susan Sarandon chose a more streamlined interpretation at the premiere of The Echo Chamber. Her black Fendi dress featured long sleeves and an off the shoulder neckline, with a fluid silhouette that followed the body without requiring elaborate embellishment. Statement jewelry, sunglasses and bright red lipstick added personality, demonstrating how accessories can completely change the mood of an otherwise minimalist black dress.
For the festival's opening ceremony, Amal Clooney turned to Tom Ford. Her floor length column gown used rippled fabric panels and subtle leather detailing to create movement and texture. Pointed pumps and a coordinating clutch continued the sleek approach. The result demonstrated how carefully constructed fabric can make a single color visually interesting without overwhelming the overall silhouette.
Maggie Gyllenhaal brought archival fashion into the conversation with an Armani Privé velvet gown originally created in 2015. The design combined sharply defined shoulders, long sleeves and a plunging embellished neckline. Its return more than a decade later also highlighted the growing red carpet practice of revisiting existing fashion rather than treating older couture as something that belongs permanently in an archive.

Former West Virginia Sen. Joe Manchin, a Democrat-turned-independent, said Monday he supports two Republican Senate candidates running in battleground races in November.
During an appearance on CNBC, Manchin expressed support for former Rep. Mike Rogers, who is running for an open seat in Michigan, and Sen. Susan Collins of Maine, who is seeking reelection. Both races are crucial to whether the GOP will retain control of the Senate.
"You lose the Susan Collinses of the Senate, you're losing the soul of the Senate — basically, a person you can talk to, who wants to do the right thing all of the time," Manchin said, adding that he would campaign with the senator.
Manchin, a longtime critic of extremes in both parties, served in the Senate from 2010-2025 and left the Democratic Party during his final months in office, arguing that the party's brand had become "toxic." He has remained involved in politics and launched a national effort in July to help elect more independents.

WASHINGTON, Sept 10 (Reuters) - The Trump administration has proposed eliminating a 60-day grace period that allows certain immigrants, including skilled workers on H-1B visas, to stay in the United States and find a new sponsor after losing ‌their job, according to a government notice posted online on Thursday.
Under the planned rule change, published in the Federal ‌Register by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, those with H-1B and certain other temporary work visas would have to leave the country as soon as their employment ends — a potential blow to top American tech companies that rely heavily on foreign workers.
It is the latest step by U.S. President Donald Trump to limit legal immigration since returning to office in January 2025. His administration has also introduced higher visa fees for skilled workers and recently paused immigrant visa appointments at U.S. missions globally while it implements a new training program.
Companies affected by the change could see some disruption, ‌DHS wrote in its proposal, but it said the jobs could go to American workers instead. In some situations, immigrant workers who leave could potentially reapply if their employer petitions for them, it added.

Judd Nelson made a rare public appearance in West Hollywood this week, looking a lot different than he did as an '80s teen icon.
In photos shared by the Daily Mail and published on Friday, September 11, the Breakfast Club star, 66, stepped out in an eclectic layered look — camo pants, a brown shirt and a loosely ***** oned plaid overshirt in blue, red and white, all topped off with a black trench coat. He rounded out the outfit with a gray ball cap and sunglasses. But the real transformation came from his beard: long, gray and scruffy, it obscured much of his once-famous face.
David Edwards / MEGA
Nelson grinned as he geared up, strapped on a sticker-covered black helmet, hopped on his motorcycle and headed off into traffic.
The Suddenly Susan alum tends to avoid the red-carpet circuit and public events, but he's a familiar sight to Angelenos who spot him weaving through the city on two wheels. His love of motorcycles even led to a memorable mishap decades ago on his first day filming 1991's New Jack City alongside Ice-T and Chris Rock.

Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, had a sly way of addressing reports that Troy Jackson, her Democratic opponent, fathered two children with his second cousin.
"Well, I'm not going to bring up the fact that the mother of his two children is his second cousin," Collins told a Politico reporter when asked if Jackson's personal life would be fair game on the campaign trail. "I don't know whether people know that or not."
"But you just mentioned it," the reporter shot back.
The clip quickly spread across social media as conservatives praised Collins for her political savvy.

Susan Lucci is certainly a gorgeous woman, and a legend in daytime soap as Erica Kane in "All My Children." With over 40 years in TV, it comes as no surprise that Lucci has also developed her own personal sense of style. This was demonstrated when she selected a super-colorful gown to wear to her son's wedding for a mother-of-the-groom look that serves as the perfect inspo for older women. Lucci has long since shown her unique, eclectic fashion sense on the red carpet, proving that age is no barrier to having fun with fashion.
Unlike other Hollywood celebs today, Lucci doesn't seem to favor donning one-tone, neutral color palettes. Her wardrobe is filled with bright, vivid colors, patterns, and materials, and she's said before that she's prioritizing feeling and looking amazing, no matter what anyone thinks. "Keep on looking your best and feeling your best," Lucci exclusively shared with Today, per AARP. As such, here are some of Susan Lucci's best red carpet looks that demonstrate just how daring she is.

2026 is looking to be a momentous year for Susan Lucci as she heralded her return to the big screen with the movie, "Outcome." She attended the premiere for the film in an eye-catching Oscar de la Renta dress, a strapless number in a beautiful pale blue with purple, floral motifs adorning the bodice and skirt. Although she left her neck bare, Lucci chose a pair of diamond tassel earrings that she showed off to full effect by putting her hair up in an elegant updo. Truly, she rocked this dress.

Cramer exited AVGO over plans to raise $80 billion in debt but dismissed identical vendor financing concerns at NVDA as "lazy Susan deals."
Nvidia's 503x interest coverage and $49 billion in free cash flow let it fund an $80 billion buyback without touching bond markets.
Don't wait: the ****** yst who called NVIDIA in 2010 just revealed his top 10 AI stocks. See the full list FREE now.
The split screen from Aug. 25 is the setup investors need to understand heading into tonight's earnings report. In the morning, a CNBC clip logged Jim Cramer selling Broadcom and defending NVIDIA. That evening on Mad Money, he called NVIDIA (NASDAQ:NVDA) "the loom, the steam engine and the computer all balled up into one" and waved off the same vendor financing practice he had flagged at the other chipmaker as harmless.
The chipmaker he exited was Broadcom (NASDAQ:AVGO), a charitable trust holding. Cramer had noted the night prior that Broadcom was looking to raise a significant amount of debt to support a planned chip financing deal, and traders were already weighing AI leverage risks tied to a debt raise of up to $80 billion. Yet when the same circular financing critique was aimed at NVIDIA, Cramer brushed it aside: "The critics say these are circular deals where Nvidia gives someone money and then they spend that money on NVIDIA product. I call them lazy Susan deals."

If jurors find Lindsay Clancy not criminally responsible for strangling her three children, her civil commitment to a mental institution could come up for review every year — making it difficult to predict how long she could remain hospitalized, according to a retired judge.
Clancy would not face "a 'life sentence in a public mental hospital,'" Carol Erskine, a retired Massachusetts judge and child welfare advocate, wrote in a post on X. "She could remain hospitalized for many years — even indefinitely — but only as long as the legal criteria for civil commitment continue to be met."
The first move is in the trial judge's hands, Erskine later told Fox News Digital.

Susan Sarandon, his co-star in the Rocky Horror Picture Show, posted a throwback image of the two with a caption that read, "What a funny, ***** y, original he was. But what I loved about him most was his heart. Even wheelchair-bound, he continued to be so sweet and generous with his fans. Thank you Tim for meaning so much to so many people. Love you, S."

Luke Evans is paying tribute to Tim Curry by sharing an emotional letter he sent to the late "Clue" actor just weeks before his death at age 80.
Evans made his Broadway debut as cross-dressing mad scientist Dr. Frank-N-Furter in "The Rocky Horror Show," for which he received a Tony Award nomination, earlier this year. Curry originated the role when the musical premiered in London in 1973, and later reprised it on the New York stage and in the 1975 film adaptation, "The Rocky Horror Picture Show," co-starring Susan Sarandon.
Shortly after Curry's death was announced Wednesday, Evans posted the text of his letter on Instagram, describing the actor as "a bright fierce flame" who was "an inspiration to me and so many more people."

Actor Tim Curry, known for his iconic performances in cult classics like "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" and the original screen adaptation of Stephen King's "It," has died, his manager confirmed. He was 80.
A cause of death was not given, but his publicist said he died "peacefully at his home in Toluca Lake, Los Angeles," on Tuesday.
Born into a military family in Cheshire, England, in 1946, the British singer and actor grew up moving from place to place before eventually returning to the U.K. and starting his career, which began in the original 1968 production of "Hair" in London's West End.
He went on to receive multiple Emmy, Grammy and Tony awards, alongside additional acclaim, throughout his decades in the business. Many considered his flamboyant and often genre-defying theatrical style to be a pioneering form of comedy, in a league of its own.
Not long after his West End debut, Curry rocketed into the global limelight with his portrayal of cross-dressing scientist Dr. Frank-N-Furter in "Rocky Horror," the 1975 musical comedy movie in which he starred alongside the likes of Susan Sarandon and Barry Bostwick. He reprised the role for the screen after first playing it in the stage musical "The Rocky Horror Show."

"The Rocky Horror Picture Show" star Tim Curry has died aged 80.
The Cheshire-born actor, known for playing transvestite alien scientist Dr Frank-N-Furter in the 1975 musical film, died at his Los Angeles home, according to his long-time manager and friend Marcia Hurwitz.
A cause of death was not confirmed, however, it comes after Curry suffered a major stroke in 2012, leaving his left side paralysed.
Curry's versatile career spanned stage and screen with notable film credits including as Pennywise in "It" (1990), the concierge in "Home Alone 2: Lost in New York" (1992) and Long John Silver in "Muppet Treasure Island" (1996).
He originated the "sweet transvestite from transsexual Transylvania" character on stage in London before taking the show to Broadway, and then reprising the role in the film which also starred Susan Sarandon, Meat Loaf and Barry Bostwick.

Home Alone 2 actor Tim Curry died on Tuesday, August 25.
According to TMZ, Curry's health was on the decline for over a decade before his death at the age of 80. The Hollywood star died at his Los Angeles home. No cause of death has yet been revealed for the revered actor.
In 2025, Curry shared with The Hollywood Reporter that he was still unable to walk following a near-fatal stroke in 2012.
"I still can't walk, which is why I'm in this silly chair, and that's very limiting. So I won't be singing, and I won't be dancing very soon. I still have real problems with my left leg," he shared at a screening for the 50th anniversary of the 1975 cult classic The Rocky Horror Picture Show, in which he starred alongside Susan Sarandon.
Curry often displayed his knack for musical theater in his roles, including playing Rooster Hannigan in the 1982 film adaptation of Annie, as well as several Broadway productions, such as Monty Python's Spamalot, My Favorite Year, and Hair.

The Federal Reserve's preferred inflation gauge showed prices remained sticky in July, reinforcing division within the central bank on whether to raise interest rates as policymakers gather this week for their annual economic symposium in Jackson Hole, Wyo.
While prices remained sticky year over year, month-over-month data pointed to a slowdown, a positive signal for those who are content to hold interest rates steady, though it's unlikely to quiet the hawks.
The Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE) index rose 3.3% in July on a "core" basis, which excludes volatile food and energy prices. That was in line with expectations and the same level as June. Month over month, prices rose 0.2%, also in line with expectations and up from 0.1% in June.
The monthly increase suggests inflation is rising at a mild rate. New York Fed president John Williams has said that if inflation on a monthly basis, as measured by PCE, comes in at 0.2% or lower, that would indicate inflation is coming back down to the Fed's 2% target on its own, implying the Fed would not need to raise rates.
Boston Fed president Susan Collins said Tuesday that she was content to hold rates steady at the last meeting, but she would need to see evidence that inflation is dropping to continue holding rates.

WASHINGTON, Aug 25 (Reuters) - The U.S. Federal Reserve will need to raise interest rates soon unless coming data ‌show a continued decline in inflation that remains too high and which has ‌become a "pervasive" concern for businesses and households, Boston Fed President Susan Collins said on Tuesday.
Collins said in comments posted to the Boston Fed website that the current Fed policy rate, under her base case outlook, will continue to push down prices and help with a "gradual disinflation" aided also by the recent rise in longer-term bond yields and other factors.
But "should evidence of sustained inflation progress not materialize, ‌I believe it will be appropriate to tighten policy soon to ensure we deliver price stability in a reasonable time frame. ... Concerns about high prices are pervasive in my conversations with stakeholders across New England," Collins wrote.

Economists polled by Reuters expect that new inflation data on Wednesday will show that the Personal Consumption Expenditures price index, excluding food and energy, increased at a 3.3% annual rate in July, unchanged from the month before and well above the Fed's 2% target. ‌Core PCE, considered a guide to future headline inflation, has risen steadily since last year, with Fed officials citing the Trump administration's import tariffs, higher oil prices due to the war with Iran, and now massive investments in artificial intelligence as reasons for the increase.
