(NEXSTAR) – From unexpected babies to "Ozempic teeth," the ultra-popular class of GLP-1 medications is turning out to have a few unanticipated side effects. Emerging research shows the drugs, which have proven effective in treating obesity and diabetes, may also be useful in treating addiction.
The medications' full potential is coming to light as more people are prescribed a GLP-1, which includes the brand names Ozempic, Mounjaro, Wegovy and Zepbound. As 15% of Americans say they've tried a GLP-1, researchers are learning more about how it impacts all aspects of life, not just diet.
"This drug has been available in the medical community since 2005," said Dr. Eugene Lucas, professor and coordinator of the Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner Program at Wilkes University. "And over time, when physicians are ordering these medications for people with obesity, diabetes, they're finding that if they have a concurrent addictive disorder, and specifically alcohol, that they're either cutting back or stopping their alcohol use."
A large study of more than 200,000 people in Sweden found using a GLP-1 drug was ***** ociated with a decreased risk of hospitalization from alcohol use disorder.
Another study by researchers at the Washington University School of Medicine, which looked at 600,000 veterans with type 2 diabetes, found the medications were tied to a lower risk of developing any kind of substance use disorder.

Amazon plans to dramatically expand its Prime Air drone delivery service, saying it expects to reach nearly 500 U.S. cities and towns by the end of 2026 as retailers race to make airborne deliveries a larger part of everyday shopping.
The expansion would increase Prime Air's footprint sixfold, giving tens of millions more customers access to drone deliveries. Amazon said eligible shoppers can order millions of products, including groceries, electronics, medications and household essentials, with deliveries arriving in as fast as 30 minutes.
The announcement comes as the drone delivery industry appears poised for rapid growth. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has proposed rules that would make it easier for certified operators to fly drones beyond a pilot's visual line of sight, a change companies say could significantly reduce costs and allow services to expand more quickly, according to Reuters.
Here's what to know about Amazon's Prime Air expansion, including where drone delivery is available and where it's headed next.
Prime Air currently operates from 11 delivery sites serving metro areas including Phoenix; Tampa, Florida; Kansas City, Kansas; Baton Rouge, Louisiana; Detroit; Omaha, Nebraska; Houston; Dallas; San Antonio; and Waco, Texas.

Eli Lilly and Company (NYSE:LLY) cleared a notable regulatory hurdle on August 10, when Britain's drug regulator authorized the company's oral GLP-1 drug orforglipron, becoming the first country in Europe to approve the pill. Shares of LLY increased more than 2% in response to the announcement, a modest but insightful reaction for a company whose weight-loss franchise has become the single most important driver of its market value.
The UK's Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency approved orforglipron, offered under the brand name Foundayo, for weight loss and maintenance in obese adults, as well as select overweight individuals with at least one weight-related health condition. The approval also addresses increasing blood sugar control in people with type 2 diabetes.
What sets Foundayo apart from Lilly's other weight-loss medications, as well as the majority of the GLP-1 category in general, is the format. Unlike injectable drugs like Lilly's Zepbound or Novo Nordisk A/S (NYSE:NVO)'s Ozempic, Foundayo is a small, non-peptide GLP-1 receptor agonist that is taken as a single daily tablet. It can also be taken at any time with no food or water restrictions, making it a far more convenient regimen than some oral peptide alternatives that require fasting windows around dosing.
The clinical data that supports the approval is strong. In the ATTAIN-1 trial, which tracked 3,127 individuals with obesity for 72 weeks, participants on the 36 mg dose lost an average of 11.2% of their body weight, as opposed to 2.1% on placebo, and more than half of those on that dose lost at least 10%.
The authorization is crucial, but it is not the final step. Foundayo is not currently available through the NHS in the UK, and the drug's journey to that larger market is through the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence, which is completing its own cost-effectiveness study, with a decision expected on November 18. Until NICE decides, UK patients seeking the medicine will have to pay out of pocket or get it privately, a scenario that is already playing out with competing products in the category.

Chrissy Metz is opening up about her decision to start taking a GLP-1.
In a new interview with People, the This Is Us alum, 45, said that after years of trying different diets and fitness routines that didn't work, she opted for weight loss medication.
"I just wanted to take care of myself," Metz said.
"I'm not getting any younger. I'm in perimenopause, and there were obesity issues within my family and with my father, and I felt like I've tried so many modalities, whether it was diets or therapy, and none of it really worked for me," she continued.
Metz was skeptical at first, however, about starting a GLP-1, which, per the Cleveland Clinic, are "medications that help lower blood sugar levels and promote weight loss." In addition to being worried that the popular weight loss drugs wouldn't work for her, Metz was scared she would experience some of the horrible side effects often **** ociated with taking the medication, including nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and constipation, per Harvard Health.

Coleen Nolan has shown off the results of her 3.5-stone weight loss after dropping from a size 20 to a size 14 and reaching the point where she says she no longer wants the number on the scale to fall.
The 61-year-old Loose Women star has documented her transformation throughout 2026 after partnering with clinical weight-loss company Voy. She has said she now has more energy, an improved back and greater confidence in the clothes she wears.
The partnership has also generated speculation because Voy offers prescription weight-loss treatments, including injectable medications. Nolan had previously expressed reservations about weight-loss jabs, but she has never publicly said that she personally used Mounjaro, Wegovy or another injection to achieve her 3.5-stone loss.
What Nolan has said is that a pre-diabetes diagnosis changed how seriously she viewed her health after years of yo-yo dieting. She joined Voy looking for a longer-term approach and has since said she has reached a weight she is happy to maintain.
"I feel so much better health-wise," she told The Sun. "My back's improved, I've got more energy. And confidence-wise, of course it helps." Nolan also made clear that she was no longer trying to continue losing weight.

(NewsNation) — Retirees shouldn't be alarmed by the ending of a Biden-era Medicare premium subsidy program, an industry expert says.
Last week, the Trump administration said it would move to shutter the program, subsequently bringing to an end Medicare Part D subsidies at the cessation of 2026.
Medicare Part D is optional prescription drug coverage offered by private insurance companies to help people with Medicare pay for brand-name and generic medications.
It is available as a stand-alone plan to add to original Medicare or as part of a bundled Medicare Advantage plan.
"While headlines about the end of Medicare's premium stabilization program may sound alarming, retirees shouldn't confuse that change with a loss of Medicare prescription drug coverage," Chris Maikels, senior actuary and strategy leader of retiree solutions at Aptia Group, told NewsNation.

Platinum ****** et Management, an investment management company, released its Q2 2026 investor letter for "Platinum International Brands Fund". A copy of the letter can be downloaded here. The fund returned over 4% in the quarter but lost 14% over the past year, primarily due to the dominance of tech stocks amid an AI investment boom. Consumer-focused sectors underperformed due to weak sentiment and challenges such as high interest rates and rising oil prices, which have contributed to record-low consumer confidence. However, the fund's holdings remain fundamentally strong, with top holdings averaging 13% sales growth and 19% profit growth. The letter noted that positive developments include resumed job growth, reduced oil prices, and easing fiscal policy, which potentially enhance consumer sentiment. In addition, please check the Fund's top five holdings to know its best picks in 2026.
In its Q2 2026 investor letter, Platinum International Brands Fund highlighted Zoetis Inc. (NYSE:ZTS). Zoetis Inc. (NYSE:ZTS), an animal health company focused on animal health medications, vaccines, and diagnostic products, detracted from the Fund's performance during the quarter. On July 28, 2026, Zoetis Inc. (NYSE:ZTS) closed at $77.51 per share. One-month return of Zoetis Inc. (NYSE:ZTS) was 6.98%, and its shares lost 47.91% over the past 52 weeks. Zoetis Inc. (NYSE:ZTS) has a market capitalization of about $32.49 billion.
Platinum International Brands Fund stated the following regarding Zoetis Inc. (NYSE:ZTS) in its Q2 2026 investor update:
"Our worst performer was Zoetis (-35%). Simply, we got this wrong. Zoetis Inc. (NYSE:ZTS) makes medicines for pets and livestock and has long been the great innovator of its field, having pioneered and dominated the huge markets for canine dermatology and three-in-one parasiticides.
Unfortunately, its rivals have caught up and its commercial response has disappointed. In fairness, it likely expected its promising new arthritis treatment to comfortably offset any erosion. However, a social media scare campaign derailed its US launch largely because their commercial response was again inadequate.

An estimated 21.5 million additional adults in the United States may now be eligible for statins under updated cholesterol treatment guidelines, according to a new study.
The researchers aimed to estimate how many adults in the US would be considered eligible for statin therapy under the new 2026 blood cholesterol guidelines issued by the American Heart **** ociation, the American College of Cardiology and nine partnering medical societies, compared with the previous 2018 guidelines.
The **** ysis, published July 20 in the journal JAMA, found that the changes could bring the total number of Americans eligible for statins, medications that lower cholesterol, to about 87.5 million people, or more than half of adults ages 30 to 79.
What prompted this major expansion, and does being eligible mean that someone should immediately begin taking medication? A couple, 37 and 39, spent three rounds of IVF over two years before a successful pregnancy, financing each round on credit cards and a fertility specific loan when insurance covered almost none of it. The balance now sits at $52,000, and with a baby due in four months, they're trying to figure out how to pay it down before childcare costs stack on top of it.
Fertility treatment coverage varies enormously by state and employer, and only a limited number of states currently mandate any insurance coverage for IVF specifically. Most couples paying out of pocket are covering costs that can run $15,000 to $20,000 per round once medications, monitoring, and the procedure itself are included.

Moon Capital Management, LLC, an investment management company, released its second quarter 2025 investor letter. A copy of the letter can be downloaded here. The S&P 500 index rebounded in the second quarter, achieving a 9.6% return for the first half of the year, while Moon Capital Management's equity portfolio gained 4%. AI-related stocks led market performance, mitigating geopolitical concerns. Moon Capital holds 10% of its portfolio in technology, significantly less than the S&P 500's 39%. In its Q2 2026 investor letter, Moon Capital Management highlighted Zoetis Inc. (NYSE:ZTS) as a newly added position. Zoetis Inc. (NYSE:ZTS) is an animal health company focused on animal health medications, vaccines, and diagnostic products. On July 22, 2026, Zoetis Inc. (NYSE:ZTS) closed at $74.19 per share. One-month return of Zoetis Inc. (NYSE:ZTS) was -4.66%, and its shares lost 51.45% over the past 52 weeks. Zoetis Inc. (NYSE:ZTS) has a market capitalization of $31.1 billion.
Moon Capital Management stated the following regarding Zoetis Inc. (NYSE:ZTS) in its Q2 2026 investor update:
"We added one new stock to the portfolio last quarter, Zoetis Inc. (NYSE:ZTS). (Our average purchase price was about $73.20/share.) Zoetis is the world's largest pure-play animal health company. We have long viewed Zoetis as one of the highest-quality businesses in healthcare (albeit for mostly four legged patients), and the company has generally been valued accordingly. However, temporary concerns around slower companion animal growth and increased competitive pressures created an opportunity to purchase the company at an attractive price. After trading above 30 times earnings for much of the past decade, Zoetis now has a P/E of less than 11x, a valuation we believe significantly understates the quality, durability, and long-term earnings power of the business.
The animal health industry is attractive as it combines the defensive characteristics of healthcare investing with a more favorable industry structure than traditional pharmaceuticals. In contrast to human healthcare, a significant portion of animal health spending is paid directly by owners, which reduces reimbursement pressure. The industry also benefits from lower research and development costs, shorter development timelines, and strong relationships with veterinarians. These relationships, combined with regulatory barriers and specialized technical expertise, create meaningful switching costs and contribute to long product lifecycles..." For the first time in the program's history, Medicare is covering weight-loss drugs, and the price tag looks almost too good to pass up.
Beginning July 1, eligible Part D enrollees can access medications including Wegovy, Foundayo, and the Zepbound KwikPen for a flat $50 monthly copay through a temporary federal demonstration called the Medicare GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1) Bridge.
That is a massive discount compared to the retail price of these drugs, which can exceed $1,000 per month without insurance coverage.
It arrives at a moment when roughly 56% of GLP-1 users say affordability is a significant challenge, a poll from KFF, the health policy research organization, found.
But this is not traditional Part D coverage, and the distinction creates financial consequences that could blindside enrollees who ******* ume the program works like every other Medicare prescription benefit they have used.

NEW YORK, July 22 (Reuters) - Many patients have opted for injectable forms of the wildly popular GLP-1 obesity medications through a pilot program of the U.S. government's Medicare health insurance program for Americans aged 65 and older, according to early indications from doctors and ‌analysts.
The U.S. Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services this month launched an 18-month trial program that for the first time opens access to Novo Nordisk's Wegovy and ‌Eli Lilly's Foundayo and Zepbound as weight-loss treatment alone for a monthly cost of $50.
Millions of people are expected to qualify, and doctors are already being flooded with interest from patients aged 65 and older. For the most part, they say the process is going well — with some hiccups.
Many pharmaceutical industry experts had expected that patients would prefer pills over injections, for convenience. Novo's U.S. chief Jamey Millar in June said the firm's research indicated that Medicare beneficiaries prefer the oral pill to the injectable on a two-to-one basis.

Sharon Stone has recalled how she felt "pretty sick" after quitting marijuana.
The Basic Instinct actress suffered a near-fatal subarachnoid haemorrhage in September 2001, with her taking around seven years to fully recover.
In an interview for Variety published on Monday, Stone recounted how she decided to stop taking one of the stroke medications last September against medical advice.
"They said, 'You can't go off of it. You can never go off of it.' I'm like, 'I'm going off it,' and it was like going off of f**king heroin," she declared. "I was sick as a frigging dog for four and a half months. I just thought, 'I want my life back.' I had gotten off the majority of the drugs over the years that they had put me on. But I was like, 'I want a drug-free life.'"
In addition, Stone revealed that she had made a vow to give up smoking weed too.
"Once I got off that, I decided I'm going to quit smoking pot. And because I think they put so much stuff in it now - they really do - when I stopped smoking pot, I also got sick," the 68-year-old continued. "It's not like you're pulling it out of the ground anymore. It's not like when we were kids. I got pretty sick for a month."

(NEXSTAR) – Insurance coverage just changed for as many as 56 million Americans when it comes to the popular GLP-1 medications used to promote weight loss.
Medicare announced it is offering certain GLP-1s for $50 a month through a new trial called Medicare GLP-1 Bridge starting in July 2026.
The program is temporary for now – only slated to run until the end of 2027. Still, it's an opportunity for millions of older Americans to access a drug that's otherwise very expensive out-of-pocket.
Which GLP-1 works best? New meta-study puts them head-to-head
Of the more than 70 million Americans enrolled in Medicare, at least 10 million are overweight or obese, said Juliette Cubanski, vice president and director of the program on Medicare policy at the healthcare research nonprofit KFF told the ******* ociated Press. But, she said, a narrower slice of that group will have access to this program.

NEW YORK, July 8 (Reuters) - Companies offering Obamacare health insurance plans next year are requesting payment rates representing a 14% median increase ‌to premiums over 2026 rates, according to data from health policy research ‌group KFF.
The proposed rate for 2027 represents the second-highest increase since 2018, KFF said. Insurers must submit proposals to regulators by July 15, detailing expected costs and planned price changes ahead of the new year.
When insurance companies asked for a median rate hike of 18% last year, they pointed to an expected greater number of higher-risk, or sicker, patients enrolled ‌in the plans that would not be offset by less costly healthier enrollees.
Insurers expect the pool of patients with greater medical needs to increase premiums by 4% next year as healthy members continue to drop coverage in 2027. Wider economic inflation, rising costs of medications and increased consolidation of medical providers are also driving the increase in premiums, KFF said.

Weight-loss medications have surged in popularity over the last few years, with more than two million people in the UK now using them.
But while drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro have helped people reduce their weight, they also seem to be reshaping some users' spending habits.
Mounjaro and Wegovy - the UK's most popular weight-loss medications - work by mimicking a natural hormone, GLP-1, which regulates hunger, and those who use them say they find their appetite is reduced.
In June, market research company Worldpanel by Numerator published a study looking at how this affects grocery spending among UK users. The research was based on survey responses and observed purchase data from more than 11,000 households in February.
A key finding was that households with at least one GLP-1 user spent on average £418 less on groceries in the year after they began their medication, compared with non-users.

Two weeks ago, the Supreme Court ruled that "an agreement not to appeal a sentence is unenforceable when it would result in a miscarriage of justice." This week, the Court held that a government-ordered **** ysis of cellphone location data qualifies as a "search" under the Fourth Amendment.
In both cases, Justice Neil Gorsuch agreed with the result but wrote separately to highlight deeper issues that the majority did not address: the Supreme Court's endorsement of coercive plea bargaining and its embrace of two dubious Fourth Amendment doctrines. Gorsuch's opinions, which criticize precedents that have undermined civil liberties, illustrate his talent for identifying wrong turns that his colleagues are not yet ready to acknowledge.
The first case involved Munson P. Hunter III, who was sentenced to four years in federal prison after pleading guilty to one count of aiding and abetting wire fraud. His sentence also included a requirement that he undergo psychiatric treatment after his release and "take all mental health medications" prescribed for him.
Hunter objected to the latter condition, saying it violated his "constitutionally protected liberty interest in avoiding the unwanted administration of antipsychotic drugs." But the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 5th Circuit said he was not allowed to raise that issue because he had given up his right to contest any aspect of his sentence, as federal defendants usually do when they plead guilty.
The Supreme Court disagreed, saying Hunter should be allowed to argue that forced medication qualifies as a "miscarriage of justice" because it is unconstitutional. Gorsuch concurred, noting that an appeal waiver can hardly be considered "knowing and voluntary" when the defendant does not yet know the details of his sentence.

The luxury sector is weathering crosswinds at the moment: On the one hand, military conflict in the Middle East has sent high-earning consumers scattering from the region and purse strings tightening. On the other hand, the emergence of AI and weight-loss medication like GLP-1s means it's never been so easy for consumers to shop for premium brands, and they have an emerging motivation to do so.

The latest Luxury Monitor from global consulting firm Bain & Co shows growth in the sector has dipped slightly (by -1%) year on year, with estimates for Q1 2026 coming in at -3% on a constant exchange rate.

That said, there are green shoots: A major driver of consumption is the use of GLP-1 weight-loss medications, the report authored by Claudia D'Arpizio and Federica Levato, senior partners at Bain & Co, says. The emergence of the trend "is a very central question, and the macro trend in consumption of so many categories within luxury and outside of luxury, from a sociological and anthropological perspective, is the most interesting topic right now," Levato told Fortune.
In the soft luxury category, like apparel and footwear, "there is, of course, the enthusiasm of having lost weight and so there is a direct correlation with 'Let's buy a new wardrobe,'" Levato explains. "There is more enthusiasm for a shopping frenzy … and it's directly related to higher consumer confidence."
Levato isn't talking about consumer confidence in the sense of a brighter economic outlook. Rather, she describes the "YOLO" (you only live once) sentiment among consumers, inspired at first by the end of the pandemic and, since then, new options for self-confidence courtesy of drugs like Ozempic and Mounjaro.
For brands, this raises several questions. Levato suggests the key problem facing the luxury sector is how to broaden its client base, be it by generation, region, or income level. Another effect of widespread use of GLP-1s is that more people may fit the sometimes-limited sizing options offered by luxury brands, Levato says.
The luxury sector has long been criticized for not being inclusive (wealth barriers aside). In the era of weight loss drugs, representation for a range of body types appears to have regressed even further. The Vogue Business Fall/Winter 2026 Size Inclusivity Report, released in March, found that of the nearly 8,000 looks presented in the season, 97.6% were in so-called "straight sizes" of U.S. 0-4. The "mid-size" category (U.S. 6-12) had representation of 2.1%, while plus-sizes (U.S. 14+) were just 0.3%.

(NewsNation) — Researchers said they have developed a minimally invasive procedure that may help people keep weight off after stopping popular medications like Ozempic and semaglutide, addressing one of the biggest challenges facing the multibillion-dollar weight-loss drug industry.
The procedure, called duodenal mucosal resurfacing, uses controlled heat to renew the lining of the upper small intestine, potentially "resetting" a person's metabolism to prevent the common weight regain that occurs when patients discontinue GLP-1 medications.
"Finding a treatment that allows patients to stop these medications without weight regain or loss of metabolic benefit is a huge unmet need," said Dr. Shelby Sullivan, director of the Endoscopic Bariatric and Metabolic Program at Dartmouth Health Weight Center and lead author of the research said.
Is an AI doctor prescribing medication without a human physician?
Nearly 70% of people who stop GLP-1 medications like Ozempic and Wegovy regain much of the weight they lost, often within 18 months. The cost of ongoing medication, side effects and a reluctance to take drugs indefinitely drive many patients to discontinue use.

Amil (11-2 MMA, 3-2 UFC) was an undefeated fighter until last June, when he was stopped by Jose Delgado at UFC 317. In his next fight, he dropped a unanimous decision to Jamall Emmers. Amil now knows what may have played a major factor in those outcomes.
"I lost my last fight, but I won something bigger," Amil told MMA Junkie and other reporters at media day. "I was puking, fighting stomach symptoms during the fight, and they found out I had an ulcer, a hole in my stomach with acid, while I was fighting, pouring out. That's why I was wincing and burning. I puked after. I don't know if everyone saw. I didn't know what was going on with me, then a doctor stuck a camera inside my stomach, and they found an infection I had. If I were not to get rid of the infection within a year or two, I would have got stomach cancer."
Amil says he's now fully healthy and ready for his return against Christian Rodriguez on the main card of UFC Fight Night 279 on Saturday. It's an interesting clash, because Rodriguez (12-4 MMA, 5-4 UFC) also enters on a two-fight skid and has made recent changes in his life, although he wasn't dealing with a serious medical issue.
"I'm off the medications," Amil said. "My last two losses, my last two fights, because of my infection I got from Mexico when I ate something – I was wondering where I got all these symptoms and I wasn't recovering well. I was stressed. I was like eight pounds light on both my last fights – also my both last losses. I was wondering why I couldn't rehydrate, because my stomach was compromised. ... When the doctors found out, it cleared it, and now I feel so healthy."

Large-cap stocks underperformed smaller-cap stocks, and Value outperformed Growth. The portfolio outperformed the S&P 500's -4.3% return but lagged the Russell 1000 Growth Index, which fell 9.8%. Renaissance Investment Large Cap Growth Strategy stated the following regarding Zoetis Inc. (NYSE:ZTS) in its Q1 2026 investor letter:
"In the first quarter, we made several changes to our portfolio as market rotation provided us with several opportunities to upgrade the quality of the portfolio. In March, we added a new position in the Health Care sector with Zoetis Inc. (NYSE:ZTS), the global leader in vaccines and pharmaceuticals for both the companion animal and livestock markets. Zoetis has faced difficult growth comparisons since the latter part of 2022, after an initial spike in demand caused by COVID-driven pet adoptions wore off and operational missteps in new drug launches hampered growth. However, we believe that revenue is positioned to reaccelerate as COVID-era pets approach the age when preventive and protective treatments begin, driving demand for professional veterinary services. We particularly like the company's new drug pipeline, with new drug launches over the next four years targeting cancer, kidney, heart, obesity, and anxiety treatments. In addition, we believe that increasing demand for protein consumption and a relaunch of the company's pain medication will likewise help reverse recent revenue deceleration."

Among those taking GLP-1 medications for weight loss, exercise rates are decreasing, according to new research.
The study, set to be presented at ENDO 2026 (the Endocrine Society's annual meeting) in Chicago this week, found that adults with obesity who lost weight with a GLP-1, such as Ozempic or Wegovy, "significantly reduced" their physical activity.
In an Endocrine Society press release, study lead Sajana Maharjan, MD, of HSHS St. John's Hospital in Springfield, Illinois, noted that GLP-1 drugs like semaglutide, liraglutide, dulaglutide and tirzepatide reduce both fat and lean muscle mass.
