On late Thursday night, we finally had some free-agent wide receiver news. And it involved the Washington Commanders, sort of, as Deebo Samuel returned to the San Francisco 49ers on a one-year deal. Samuel spent last season with the Commanders, leading the team in receptions, receiving yards and receiving touchdowns.
With Samuel off the board, could we soon learn the fate of Stefon Diggs?
Per ESPN's John Keim, the Commanders are continuing to monitor the situation.
"There's only one guy that I think Washington would sign, and it's Stefon Diggs," Keim said on his podcast, the "John Keim Report," on Thursday.
"I would say they continue to monitor that situation, and you can take that however you want. When you monitor it, you are not doing it from afar; you're not doing it like, 'Oh, I wonder what's going to happen?' If you're monitoring it, what do you think that means? It means you're in the know. Where that goes, I don't know. I don't know how many teams are interested in Diggs. We do know he'd like to play here. We do know this team could use another receiver. The fact that Diggs has not signed yet would suggest that no offer has been made to his liking, or his agent's liking."

Liverpool boss Andoni Iraola has been speaking to media in Chicago in his latest media conference during the Reds' pre-season tour of the USA.
A 4-2 win over Sunderland in Nashville last week was followed by a 1-0 victory over Wrexham in New York in the early hours of Thursday.
Liverpool face Leeds United in Chicago on Sunday (21:00 BST kick-off) before concluding their pre-season back on Merseyside.
Here are the key lines from the Reds head coach:
Iraola clarified where he sees Floran Wirtz's best position: "We know what he can give us. I think he's also suited to our game model. I see him more probably in that position behind the striker. We know that he has played with Germany more on the left sometimes, but I think we're going to start working with him in that position behind the striker. He's quite complete as a player."

Ajax are through to the next round of the Conference League after a demolition job on Serbian side Vojvodina. They will be joined in the next round of the competition by FC Twente, who ended up losing out in the Europa League to Hungarian side Ferencvaros. Despite the hosts being down to 10 men, FC Twente were unable to capitalise and will now drop down a competition.
Things had been going badly for the Dutch side with Ferencvaros 2-0 up after 50 minutes. The Hungarian home side were already down to 10 men at this point after Belgian midfielder Philippe Rommens had been sent off in the first half. It took FC Twente until the final 10 minutes to put real pressure on, with goals from Wout Weghorts and Lucas Vennegoor of Hesselink. Yet these came too little too late for FC Twente to equalise on aggregate and they ended up losing 4-3 overall. Twente will now face Slovakian side DAC 1904 Dunajska Streda in the Conference League.
Ajax had no problem in their second leg against Vojvodina. The Amsterdam side won 4-1 on the night, 8-2 on aggregate thanks to a hat-trick from Oscar Gloukh. Ajax will now face Irish side Shelbourne who beat Estonian side Nomme Kalju over two legs.

The Fever will continue their packed travel week with a stop in Portland to take on the Fire this Friday.
Indiana started off its West Coast stint with a solid win over Seattle on Tuesday, 105-95. With star Caitlin Clark leading the pack once again, the Fever soared to their fourth straight victory. Clark totaled 32 points and Kelsey Mitchell 28, but Aliyah Boston was pulled from the game after taking a hard fall in the second quarter.
Meanwhile, the Fire have lost their last two matchups at home against the Aces and Wings. Despite an early lead and late rally against Dallas, Portland was unable to overcome the combined power of Paige Bueckers, Azzi Fudd and Arike Ogunbowale. Can the Fire recover with a win at home?
These two squads last met on May 30, with the Fire dominating 100-84. Who will come out on top this time?

President Giuseppe Marotta and everyone at FC Internazionale Milano stand in solidarity with the Baresi family and his brother Beppe during this time of grief.Franco Baresi has passed away, taking with him one of the figures who most defined the history of the Milan derby through consistency and excellence. AC Milan captain, team leader and club icon, he built his career on defensive intelligence and leadership that earned recognition even from his opponents.
Born in Travagliato on 8 May 1960, Baresi made 719 appearances and scored 33 goals for the Rossoneri, spending 20 years exclusively with Milan, between 1977 and 1997. In the 35 derbies he played against Inter, his name became synonymous with composure and reliability in a rivalry that was always filled with intensity.
Within that rivalry, the strongest bond was the one with Giuseppe Baresi. Two brothers, two captains, who grew up together and later found themselves wearing opposite colours, yet remained united by a respect that was never in question. For them, the derby was never just a match: it was a direct challenge, a responsibility, but also a balance to be protected. "We tried to leave it outside the door. There was always the concern that neither of us would get injured," Franco recalled. And then there was that almost everyday normality before the game: joking together, a way of easing the tension before 90 minutes that meant much more than just a football match for Milan.
On 2 March 1980, the day San Siro was named after Giuseppe Meazza, that story was captured in one defining image: the Baresi brothers facing each other inside a stadium that was becoming an even stronger symbol of the city and its rivalry. A photograph that tells the story of the derby better than many words. The final image, once again inside San Siro: the Olympic Torch ceremony, carried together with Beppe Bergomi. An endless derby, a bond with the city that remains unbreakable.
From Inter and the entire Nerazzurri world, the memory of a great opponent, a protagonist of the battles that helped shape the very meaning of the Milan derby. With respect.

Real Madrid were quick to make new additions to their defense and midfield after the end of the last season, as they signed, Marc Cucurella, Ibrahima Konate, Denzel Dumfries, and Bernardo Silva.
For the attack, the only major addition in the early phase of the window was the return of the Brazilian forward Endrick from his loan with Lyon. However, the Merengues have now made another addition to their forward line.
As MARCA has reported, Los Blancos have already completed and announced their fifth signing of the summer, i.e., the striker Carlos Espi, whom they have landed after paying his €25 million release clause to Levante. The player has signed a contract till 2031 with Real Madrid.
This new signing will fill the void that will be left with the departure of Gonzalo Garcia, who is very close to completing a move to the Premier League side Fulham, where he will be playing under the former Merengue coach Alvaro Arbeloa.
Los Blancos moved very fast for this latest signing, and only a few hours after reports emerged of their interest in the Spaniard, they had already officially announced his signing. This transfer also disturbs the plans of some Premier League sides, like Hull City and Brighton and Hove Albion, who were also willing to pay his release clause, and the latter already had a deal in place with Levante.

Apple said it is facing severe supply constraints that will affect sales of iPhones and Macs in the months ahead, underscoring the challenges looming over the company as Tim Cook prepares to hand over the CEO reins.
In his final earnings call as CEO, Cook said he has never been more optimistic about the opportunities ahead for Apple. "I am beyond excited," said Cook, who has led the company for 15 years and will pass the CEO baton to John Ternus in September. But Cook's confidence in the future stood in contrast to the picture that he and other executives painted of the current business conditions.
"We're seeing some very significant constraints currently, with limited flexibility in the supply chain," Cook said. "There's a quarter where we're going to be scrambling on the supply side," he acknowledged at another point.
The supply crunch is making it more difficult for Apple to obtain the advanced processors it needs for its phones and computers. And that translates into lower revenue.
Sales of the iPhone, which accounts for roughly half of Apple's business, will grow at a "mid-teens" percentage rate in the current quarter, Apple said, forecasting a significant deceleration from the 22% growth the iPhone business posted in the recently ended quarter. Total revenue in the current quarter will grow between 9% and 10% year-over-year, which was below the 12% rate expected by ***** ysts.

The Athletics closed out this four-game series against the Boston Red Sox on a warm summer night in West Sacramento. It was déjà vu all over again for the A's, as they carried a late lead only to watch another reliever blow the save in a 5-4 loss that prevented them from salvaging a series split.
The Athletics' struggles with runners in scoring position showed up immediately. Facing Red Sox starter Sonny Gray, designated hitter Jacob Wilson lined a one-out double in the bottom of the first, only to be stranded at second as the next two hitters grounded out.
A's right fielder Carlos Cortes drew a leadoff walk in the third inning. He advanced to second on a groundout and then moved to third on Red Sox' shortstop Andruw Monasterio's fielding error. Unlike last night, Wilson came through with a runner on third and fewer than two outs, lining an RBI single to center to put the A's up 1-0.
The hosts had a chance to score more, but Gray escaped without further damage by getting left fielder Tyler Soderstrom to ground into an inning-ending double play. Through three innings, the A's were 1-for-5 with runners in scoring position, wasting opportunities to do more damage against Boston's starter.
Seeking to extend the A's lead, catcher Jonah Heim led off the bottom of the fourth with his 11th double of the season. He scored the A's second run on center fielder Lawrence Butler's one-out RBI double to right. Jeff McNeil followed with a single, advancing Butler to third.

With just three games left before the Aug. 3 MLB trade deadline, the latest Cincinnati Reds trade-chip watch also comes with an eye on 2027.
That's because team president Nick Krall made it clear during the recent road trip that the Reds with newly-extended ace Chase Burns have designs on retooling for next season rather than rebuild again for some undetermined future window.
"You've got to make the best deal you can," Krall said. "With that said, your goal is to come back next year and be in a good spot to make a playoff run."
That's where Burns and rookie Rhett Lowder come in – even where All-Star Hunter Greene might go out.
Lowder, the No. 7 overall pick out of Wake Forest in 2023 the year before Burns was the Reds' No. 2 overall pick out of the same school, pitched six innings for the first time since April and allowed just two runs against the Pittsburgh Pirates in the July 30 opener of a four-game series won 3-2 by the Reds in the ninth.

Next up in the opponent preview series is the Michigan Wolverines. After an up-and-down season, which ended in the firing of Sherrone Moore and the first loss to Ohio State since 2019, Michigan decided to hire longtime Utah coach Kyle Whittingham. The Wolverines will look to put years of on- and off-the-field scandals behind them and return to their identity of being tough and physical in the trenches.
Rutgers has had an interesting history with the Wolverines, sealing their first-ever Big Ten victory over UM in 2014 with Kemoko Turay blocking a late field goal attempt to preserve a 26-24 win and prompting a field storm at SHI Stadium. Since then, it has all been downhill, including the infamous 78-0 loss that still leaves a pit in Rutgers' fans' stomachs.
More recently, Knights fans have struggled with much closer losses to the program, which offer a different type of heartache. There was a string of three surprisingly competitive games against a stronger Michigan team, including a 48-42 3OT escape by UM in 2020, a frustrating 20-13 Rutgers loss in Ann Arbor in 2021, and a shocking 17-14 halftime lead for the Knights at home turning into a 52-17 Michigan rout in 2022.
The last meeting between the sides was arguably the most anticlimactic, with Rutgers falling to Michigan 31-7 after an early Christian Dremel touchdown put RU up 7-0. The Knights have not seen the Wolverines since that 2023 meeting, which was the year Michigan won the national championship.
With the history being unpacked, let us turn our attention to this year's Michigan Wolverines and what to expect when Whittingham's team arrives in New Jersey on what should be an interesting Halloween gameday.

The AI buildout has resulted in an unanticipated casualty distant from Silicon Valley: telecom equipment manufacturers, who now compete with hyperscalers for the same memory chips. Three major companies, SK Hynix, Samsung, and Micron, control more than 95% of worldwide DRAM production, and as AI data centers use an increasing share of that output, memory chips used in telecom base stations become scarcer and more expensive as a direct result. That is the mechanism behind Telefonaktiebolaget LM Ericsson (NASDAQ:ERIC)'s worst single-day stock reaction in nearly three years.
The company's shares plunged about 12% on July 14, reaching their lowest level since February, after Ericsson warned that growing component costs, particularly memory chips, will affect margins in the future. Looking into Ericsson's Q2 2026 results, the market's harsh reaction was more about forward guidance rather than a breakdown in existing operational execution. Adjusted EPS was SEK 1.22 (~$0.13), which was in line with market expectations. Adjusted gross margin increased to 48.4%, a two-percentage-point year-over-year rise after normalizing for a prior-period IPR licensing settlement. Meanwhile, reported net sales declined 6% to SEK 52.7 billion ($5.62 billion), missing the SEK 53.71 billion forecast, while organic sales excluding currency and one-offs remained essentially flat.
What worried investors was guidance and cash flow, not the print itself. Free cash flow before M&A fell to SEK 0.4 billion from SEK 2.6 billion a year ago, owing to increased inventories being accumulated ahead of scheduled third-quarter deliveries. Management forecasted Q3 Networks adjusted gross margin to a range of 48% to 50%, a slight decrease from Q2 levels, noting a higher share of lower-margin network rollout projects and component inflation developing "gradually" during the second half of 2026 and into 2027.
Jefferies, which rated the stock at a Hold with a target price of 98 Kronor, framed the sales miss as being centered primarily on delayed India deliveries within the Networks division as opposed to broad-based demand weakness, and noted Ericsson is forecasting a stronger-than-seasonal third quarter as those delayed deliveries arrive.
The sudden selloff has generated an attractive valuation gap for long-term investors. Telefonaktiebolaget LM Ericsson (NASDAQ:ERIC) is currently trading at a 14.45x forward P/E multiple, representing a significant discount to key infrastructure rivals such as Nokia, which trade on similar 5G-cycle and edge-connectivity theses. The market's knee-jerk reaction appears to regard temporary component inflation as a permanent weakening of Ericsson's earnings potential, resulting in a clear disparity between price and underlying value.

The dollar index (DXY00) is down by -0.02% today. The dollar recovered from overnight losses and is little changed after crude oil prices surged more than +6% when President Trump said the US will "hit Iran hard" after a recent attack from Iran that targeted a US base in Jordan. The jump in crude prices raises inflation expectations and could prompt the Fed to tighten monetary policy, a supportive factor for the dollar. Movement in the dollar is limited ahead of the conclusion of the 2-day FOMC meeting later today when policymakers are expected to keep interest rates unchanged.
Crude oil prices jumped today after the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said it targeted a US airbase and command center in Jordan with ballistic missiles. The IRGC also claimed to have hit and halted three tankers attempting to transit through the Strait of Hormuz. Meanwhile, the US and Saudi Arabia launched a joint attack on "Iran-aligned terrorists" in Iraq after the IRGC directed them to target US forces and Saudi energy infrastructure.

ExxonMobil (NYSE:XOM) is one of the top energy names in President Donald Trump's financial disclosures from earlier this year. The stock is up about 27% so far this year. But does a presidential trade make it a buy today? Let's break down what's actually driving the stock.
Exxon benefits directly from rising oil prices amid the Iran war. Its upstream segment was projected to see a multibillion-dollar earnings lift for the second quarter compared to the first, driven almost entirely by higher realized prices rather than any change in production. That's the logic behind buying an oil major right as a Middle East conflict escalates.
Exxon's balance sheet gives it room to lean into higher prices. Net debt relative to EBITDA sits under 1x, among the lowest in the industry, and the company is on pace to repurchase roughly $20 billion of stock this year. Guyana production just hit a quarterly record above 900,000 barrels a day, and the company has applied to drill dozens more wells there.
In the Permian Basin, Exxon is now the largest operator following its Pioneer acquisition and expects to roughly double output there by 2030. Longer term, natural gas tied to data center power demand is another growth lever bulls point to, with McKinsey estimating data centers could eventually account for more than a tenth of total U.S. power demand.
There's a demand question sitting underneath the price spike. The IEA sees global oil demand softening this year, and even OPEC, which tends to run more optimistic, trimmed its own demand growth forecast. If the Iran-driven premium in oil prices fades if another ceasefire takes place, some of Exxon's near-term earnings boost fades with it.

Jul. 30—The Big Sky Conference made official its additions of Southern Utah and Utah Tech this month, in time for the two universities' football programs to take part in the league's annual football kickoff weekend at Northern Quest Resort and Casino in Airway Heights.
Coaches at both programs articulated the various benefits that the Thunderbirds and Trailblazers expect to reap, while coaches and officials from across the Big Sky described the move as a fortification of the league's status as the best in the FCS.
Having 13 teams isn't new to the Big Sky; it carried that many from 2012 to 2021, albeit not these same 13 teams. And Eastern Washington and Idaho are minimally impacted by the specific addition of Southern Utah and Utah Tech.
But by swelling to 13, the Big Sky has swallowed up every remaining scholarship FCS program within its geographic footprint, and the effect of that will ripple through its other, more tenured 11 programs.
"I thought it would be a great move for our entire athletic department, and it has been," Utah Tech head football coach Lance Anderson said. "... I just think this is a much better geographic fit for us."

The Houston Texans still could be adding in a name or two ahead of their first preseason game.
According to the latest NFL transaction report, the Texans tried out both running backs Alexander Mattison and Hassan Haskins on Thursday. Neither player was signed to a contract, but the Texans could re-explore a deal later on this week.
The 28-year-old former Boise State running back has rushed for 2,370 yards during his five seasons in Minnesota and Las Vegas. During his rookie season, Mattison rushed for a career-high 700 yards that season, but he did not score a rushing touchdown and eventually lost the secondary role to Ty Chandler.
Haskins has only rushed for 229 yards and two touchdowns during his time with the Los Angeles Chargers.
Right now, the Texans have little room for a running back with the additions of David Montgomery and Noah Whittington, but it doesn't hurt to at least look.

BALTIMORE (AP) — The Baltimore Orioles acquired catcher Jake Rogers from the Detroit Tigers on Thursday for minor league right-hander Zane Barnhart.
The Tigers designated Rogers for ******* ignment earlier in the week, and it wasn't a huge surprise Baltimore was interested. The Orioles' top two catchers — Adley Rutschman and Samuel Basallo — are on the injured list. Rogers is batting .161 with three home runs and nine RBIs this season. His career average is .197.

Barnhart has gone 2-3 with a 4.05 ERA in 31 relief appearances this year for Double-A Chesapeake.

Many savers learn the hard way that using a 401(k) to build a retirement nest egg can have a major drawback -- early withdrawal penalties. Generally speaking, withdrawals from a 401(k) are penalized 10% when taken before age 59 1/2.
But thanks to a lesser-known rule, you may be able to take a penalty-free 401(k) withdrawal at a slightly younger age. And that flexibility may come in handy if you end up leaving your job in your mid-50s.
Missed Nvidia in 2009? This Rare Signal Is Flashing Again. In 2009, a "Double Down" signal flashed for a little-known chipmaker called Nvidia. For the first time in years, that same "Total Conviction" signal is flashing for a company 1/100th the size of Nvidia. Continue »
The rule of 55 allows 401(k) savers to take penalty-free withdrawals under certain circumstances. Specifically, you must leave your job the year you turn 55 or later, and you must only withdraw funds from the 401(k) plan sponsored by the employer you've separated from at 55 or later.
If you follow these rules, you may be able to avoid a penalty for tapping your own savings. But there are some nuances to be aware of.

Those hoping for some positive momentum with the ongoing contract negotiations between the New England Patriots and Christian Gonzalez might come away feeling disappointed with the latest update.
According to NFL insider Albert Breer, the two sides "aren't close" in contract negotiations. Granted, Breer did acknowledge that things could quickly change. He also continued to suggest that Gonzalez's tactics could potentially be in line with Seattle Seahawks cornerback Devon Witherspoon, with whom he shares the same agent.
Breer thinks both players are looking for a market-setting deal from their respective teams.
"No, they aren't close right now. That doesn't mean it can't change quickly. These things can change fast," Breer said on NBC Sports Boston's Arbella Early Edition. "I think it is a gesture of good faith that he is practicing, but I think both of these guys are looking for the same thing, which is a market setter on every measure."
Gonzalez has been a full participant at training camp practice despite the ongoing contract negotiations.

Patetuci, Ancelotti, Dalla Déa and Paulo Victor: national teams in harmonyCredits: Rafael Ribeiro / CBF
The meeting between head coach Carlo Ancelotti and the managers of CBF's three Brazilian men's youth national teams, held on Thursday afternoon (30) at Granja Comary in Teresópolis (RJ), marked the beginning of a new phase in the integration process among all levels of the Canarinho.
For nearly two hours, Ancelotti and Paulo Victor, of the Under-20 team, Carlos Eduardo Patetuci, of the Under-17s, and Guilherme Dalla Déa, of the Under-15s, discussed strategic topics related to the development of Brazilian football and player training. The meeting also served to establish the guidelines that will steer the joint work of the coaching staffs in the coming cycles.
The initiative reinforces CBF's commitment to an integrated sports management model, in which the constant exchange of information, methodologies and concepts strengthens talent development and makes it easier for young players to transition to the senior national team, ensuring greater continuity in the work carried out across all age groups.
Also present at the meeting, among several representatives of the youth coaching staffs, were the general executive coordinator of the men's national teams, Rodrigo Caetano, and the men's national teams manager, Cícero Souza.

NBC Sports Philadelphia is budgeting to add a courtside voice to its Sixers broadcasts ahead of LeBron James's arrival this season, network vice president of content Alexandra Matcham told the Philadelphia Inquirer.
"I think you need a voice on the court where Alaa [Abdelnaby] and Kate [Scott] can't be to give us insight, do pre- and postgame interviews, **** ysis, all of that," Matcham said. "It's a very hard job to do."
For years, NBC Sports Philadelphia and its predecessor, Comcast SportsNet, used reporters like Serena Winters and Taryn Hatcher to fill that kind of role for the Sixers. That stopped in 2020, when the network began eliminating in-arena and in-game reporting jobs across its properties as basketball and hockey seasons wrapped that year, according to Crossing Broad's Kevin Kinkead. Hatcher stayed on covering the Phillies for five more seasons after that before her contract lapsed at the end of 2025 and NBC Sports Philadelphia cut the position rather than renew it. Kinkead later reported that the network and Hatcher had discussed a freelance arrangement that would have let her take on other work at the same time, but the talks ended without an agreement over what Kinkead's sources described as a standard contract disagreement, not any real conflict between the two sides.
That left NBC Sports Philadelphia without anyone in that role for the entirety of the Sixers' 2025-26 season, and the roster now taking shape gives the network far less room to go another year without one.
"If you get a generational talent on your team, it could easily become a situation where the people that work for us are burnt out by December, and you don't want that," Matcham said. "You need extra help."

Oil prices surged more than 7% on Wednesday as renewed U.S.-Iran hostilities and fresh threats to shipping through the Bab el-Mandeb pushed WTI above $84 and Brent toward $90, confronting the Federal Reserve with another inflation shock just hours before one of its most uncertain interest-rate decisions in years.
The rally accelerated after President Donald Trump vaguely told Fox News that the United States would "hit Iran hard" following an attack on a U.S. base in Jordan, while Iran-backed Houthis weighed imposing fees on commercial shipping through the Bab el-Mandeb Strait and U.S.-Saudi forces launched fresh strikes against Houthi positions in Yemen.
Brent crude was up 7.06% at 9:29a.m. ET Wednesday, reaching $90.03, while WTI was trading up 6.95%, at $84.77.
The renewed geopolitical premium comes just hours before the Federal Reserve announces its latest interest-rate decision, with markets divided over whether policymakers will leave rates unchanged or deliver the first rate increase since 2023. Investors are also looking for clues from Chairman Kevin Warsh after the Fed abandoned the forward guidance that had shaped market expectations for more than two decades.
June's inflation report eased pressure on the Federal Reserve after lower oil prices helped cool headline inflation during the brief lull in the Iran war, but that relief appears to have been short-lived. With crude prices once again flirting with $90 as fighting resumes, investors are divided over whether policymakers will leave interest rates unchanged or respond to renewed inflation risks.
