(NewsNation) — A new study found that a rare but serious brain condition has been identified in a small number of people taking popular weight-loss drugs such as Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro and Zepbound.
Wernicke encephalopathy is a rare neurological disorder caused by a severe deficiency of vitamin B1, also known as thiamine.
GLP-1 prescriptions for kids up more than 30,000% since 2019
Researchers identified 15 cases reported in 2023 and 2024 among people taking GLP-1 medications containing semaglutide, found in Ozempic and Wegovy, or tirzepatide, found in Mounjaro and Zepbound.
Vitamin B1 is essential for proper nerve function. Without enough of it, patients can develop confusion, problems with balance and coordination, and abnormal eye movements.

Nestlé has found a buyer for the "mainstream" vitamins, minerals and supplements (VMS) brands it put under review last year.
The Swiss food giant has agreed to offload the portfolio to US private-equity firm Yellow Wood Partners for SFr800m ($1bn).
The disposal concludes the process Nestlé launched last year for its "mainstream and value VMS brands".
Nestlé has labelled the portfolio being sold as the "Holistic Health portfolio". It includes seven brands: Nature's Bounty, Osteo Bi-Flex, Ester-C, Gard, Puritan's Pride, Sisu and hydration brand Nuun.
The company acquired Nuun in May 2021, then describing the US business as "a leader in the fast-growing functional hydration category".

Italian food-and-drinks group NewPrinces is dipping its toe into energy drinks, with the launch of a brand called Spartan in its home market.
In a post on LinkedIn, the fruit juices and soft drinks maker said the energy drinks line is being sold through Carrefour stores in Italy.
NewPrinces struck a deal to acquire Carrefour's operations in the country last year, as part of what it then described as "vertical integration between production and distribution".
The deal gave NewPrinces, which is one of Italy's largest food manufacturers, ownership of over 1,000 stores in the country.
Spartan is available in "original" and sugar-free versions. The drinks are "enriched with vitamin B6 and a source of vitamin B12", the group said in its social media post.

Over-the-counter anti-aging supplements taken by millions of Americans to boost energy and lessen the side effects of chemotherapy may actually impair cancer treatments, a new study suggests.
Researchers at the Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine found that popular vitamin B3 derivatives – including nicotinamide mononucleotide (NMN), nicotinamide riboside (NR) and nicotinamide (NAM) – could help cancer cells survive chemotherapy.
Those compounds are used by the body to produce NAD+, a molecule that helps cells generate energy and repair damage.

The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner's full autopsy report on late Memphis Grizzlies veteran forward and former Phoenix Desert Vista standout Brandon Clarke was released Monday, Aug. 24. Clarke had cocaine, heroin, oxycodone, and multiple other medications "within therapeutic levels," per the report obtained by USA Today Sports.
Clarke's roommate told officials that Clarke had a "history of drug use" and underwent multiple rehabilitation stints for drug addiction, according to the report's synopsis.
Clarke died at his San Fernando Valley residence on May 11. He was 29 years old. The cause of death was an accidental overdose from the "effects of heroin and cocaine" in Clarke's system, which matched the medical examiner's initial statement about Clarke on Aug. 7.
Los Angeles Fire Department officials listed in the incident's early reports that he was found unresponsive and declared dead at the scene.
Drug paraphernalia was found at Clarke's home, according to the synopsis report. That included "vape devices, cannabis products, prescription medications, injectable peptides, syringes, a box of Narcan, blister packets of medications, vitamins and other medical evidence." Also, there was a plate with an "unknown white powdery substance and a hotel keycard" found in the kitchen.

(NewsNation) — Entrepreneur and "longevity guru" Bryan Johnson has taken a different approach to how he will manage his autoimmune disease: cloning himself.
"I just cloned myself … as a newborn," Johnson, 48, wrote to his followers on X. He added that for now, "baby Bryan" currently lives in a Petri dish.
In early July, Johnson announced he'd been diagnosed with autoimmune gastritis, an incurable condition in which the immune system attacks the stomach's acid-producing cells. According to the National Institutes of Health, it can cause iron and vitamin B12 deficiencies, leading to anemia.
He attributed his diagnosis to poor eating and being stressed as a father of three.

Vitamin Well Group is merging with EMPWR, the manufacturer of the sports-nutrition firm's Barebells protein bars.
The financial terms of the deal, announced by Cinven, one of Vitamin Well's private-equity backers, were not disclosed.
Under the agreement, EMPWR's owner Waterland Private Equity, will retain a minority stake in the enlarged business.
In a statement, Cinven, which invested in Vitamin Well in 2024, described EMPWR as an "important manufacturing partner" for the business.
Cinven said the deal "unlocks the ability to increase investments in capacity and pursue significant volume growth opportunities".

Greenpeace and its activists allies have blocked for more than two decades the adoption of Golden Rice, which is genetically enhanced to produce the vitamin A precursor beta-carotene. The result, according to new calculations by DC Abundance founder and research director at the Golden Gate Institute for AI Abi Olvera, is that "delay has killed about 106,000 children and left another 210,000 to 425,000 blind."
Her conservative calculations of the deaths and disabilities caused by Greenpeace's scientifically ridiculous opposition to Golden Rice are focused on 11 countries in which the consumption of rice makes up a significant proportion of their people's diets.
As Olvera reports, the World Health Organization (WHO) has estimated that "250 000–500 000 children who are vitamin A-deficient become blind every year, and half of them die within 12 months of losing their sight." Vitamin A deficiency contributes to increased morbidity and mortality from common childhood infections. As the WHO notes, "Even mild, subclinical deficiency can be a problem, because it may increase children's risk for respiratory and diarrhoeal infections, decrease growth rates, slow bone development and decrease the likelihood of survival from serious illness." And it is the world's leading preventable cause of childhood blindness.
I have been debunking Greenpeace's unscientific opposition to Golden Rice since 2000 when the activist group claimed: "Greenpeace opposes golden rice because it has all the risks of any [genetically modified] crop." In my 2013 article, "Scientists Call Out Greenpeace for Killing and Blinding Kids," I hailed the blistering editorial in Science that ***** erted, "If ever there was a clear-cut cause for outrage, it is the concerted campaign by Greenpeace and other nongovernmental organizations, as well as by individuals, against Golden Rice."
In 2016, I reported the open letter by 100 ***** el Prize laureates calling on "Greenpeace to cease and desist in its campaign against Golden Rice specifically, and crops and foods improved through biotechnology in general." The laureates suggested that Greenpeace was committing a "crime against humanity." And as recently as 2024, I warned that Greenpeace's crusade against Golden Rice will continue to blind and kill children when reporting that the anti-technology activist group had persuaded a Philippine court to block local farmers from planting the grain.
