The expanded 12-team College Football Playoff has created more opportunities for teams to compete for a national championship.
Programs that previously had almost no chance of making the playoffs now have a realistic path. That became clear over the past two seasons, as Indiana, SMU, Boise State, Tulane and James Madison all reached the CFP for the first time. Their success showed that winning games, capturing a conference ***** le and building a strong resume can now be enough to earn a playoff spot.
Even with those first-time teams making the field, several well-known programs are still waiting for their CFP debut. Few came very close in 2025, while others have built talented rosters that could help them break through in 2026. Kaylen, 29, and Lachlan, 26, have been competing in canoe slalom for over a decade. They started through school, a program where they went up to Sydney from their hometown Melbourne. Since then, it's been a passion for the entire family. While their father couldn't make the trip across the pacific for the ICF Canoe Slalom World Championships in Oklahoma City, their mom was out there as a judge.
And the Bassett's case is not the only one. Not even in Australia.

The San Francisco 49ers, like most teams across the NFL, have started their training camp sessions ahead of the 2026 season, and while their players have decided to continue playing, others around the league are calling it a career.
Among those who have decided to retire is former 49ers linebacker Nick Bellore, who landed on the Washington Commanders' reserve/retired list on Monday.
Bellore played at Central Michigan from 2007-10, earning All-MAC honors twice. He went undrafted in 2011 before spending four years with the New York Jets. After that, he spent two seasons with the 49ers, appearing in 30 games and recording 100 tackles, five passes defensed, two fumble recoveries, one forced fumble, one sack and one interceptions.
Since then, Bellore has had stints with the Detroit Lions, Seattle Seahawks (where he made two Pro Bowls) and Commanders.

The financial landscape of football continues to evolve, with transfer fees, wages, and agent commissions reaching unprecedented levels. Bayern Munich board member for sport Max Eberl recently shared his thoughts on the growing costs of the modern game and the increasingly influential role agents play in shaping the transfer market.
"The sums of money involved today are, of course, sometimes very high, and one could certainly say that the role of agents has perhaps become too large. I've already been part of commissions that tried to give the whole business a certain form, a framework, but in a free market economy, that's not so easy to implement. It's a very complex topic, we all know that," Eberl told Sport1's Stefan ****** berger (as captured by iMiaSanMia). "You have to weigh things up carefully and then say "no" when the demands are disproportionate. Of course, there are also many good agents you can work with, but also some who are somewhat more radical and ruthless. But as I said: as a club, you can always decide for yourself whether you want to do things or not."
Eberl's comments reflect one of the biggest challenges facing elite clubs today. Building a top squad is no longer just about identifying talented players. Clubs must also navigate complicated negotiations involving salaries, signing bonuses, agent commissions, and a growing list of financial considerations that can dramatically alter the cost of a transfer.

High school football's opening night is at the end of August. The Virginia High School League has released the master schedule for this season.
Can Wilson Memorial repeat as Shenandoah District champions? Will Buffalo Gap repeat as regional champions or will Riverheads reclaim its dominance? Can Waynesboro continue to build its program after finding some success a year ago? Is there a Shenandoah District team that can end up playing on the final Saturday of the season this year?
All of those questions, and others, will be answered over the next five months or so.
Practice begins July 30 for some teams, followed by scrimmages and finally the regular season, which opens Aug. 28 for seven of the nine Shenandoah District teams. The other two — Wilson Memorial and Alleghany — open Sept. 4.

Shopify CEO Tobias Lütke, whose company commands a market capitalization near $154 billion, told his social media followers this week that a tax-tiered voting system—one that would strip voting rights from anyone who pays no income tax—would be a "good system."
That two-word endorsement, dropped into a viral thread, has reignited a debate over wealth, power, and democracy that most Americans thought was settled more than a century ago.
The proposal would invert the founding American principle of "no taxation without representation" into something closer to "no representation without taxation"—and specifically, high taxation. Reactions online split sharply: Some framed it as a provocative thought experiment about aligning fiscal responsibility with political voice, while others called it a naked attempt to legitimize plutocracy by giving billionaires and multimillionaires a formal, multiplied vote over the laws that govern everyone else.
But it also revealed that America is grappling with a political economy debate, as a frozen housing market and an entrenched wealthy baby boomer demographic have many, not just Lütke, arguing that something big needs to change.
The exchange began with a provocation from Lütke: Pension recipients should have their financial futures "locked in and guaranteed," but in return would be reclassified as "dependents" and lose the right to vote—the same way minors can't vote. A reply from "Eric Thor," who claimed to be a retired banking executive as well as "armchair economist and policy wonk," proposed a sliding scale: zero votes for anyone who pays no income tax, one vote for those earning $1–100K, two votes for $100–200K, scaling up in that pattern to a hard cap of five votes for anyone earning $500K or more. The pitch was framed as fairness—reward "representation" for those who "foot the bill" through taxation.

It's not too difficult to figure out why Novo Nordisk (NYSE: NVO) shares are down so much from their 2024 peak. The GLP-1 weight-loss drug race that it helped start has since turned incredibly competitive, so much so that Novo's now losing market share to rival Eli Lilly (NYSE: LLY) (and others) within a business it largely built, forcing price cuts. Investors are also concerned about the limited expansion of Wegovy's label in this environment.
More recently, Novo's decision to file a lawsuit against Lilly (claiming that its top competitor's GLP-1 drug's advertising is misleading) may be valid, but it also suggests a certain degree of concerning desperation. Never even mind the fact that 2026 is now being seen as a "reset" year far sooner than a reset should have been necessary for the company.

"Coke and Marlboro had a baby—and it's a font!," one X user wrote after seeing the company's updated typography. Others echoed the comparison, saying Coca-Cola's refreshed typography looked strikingly similar to Marlboros, in a case of reality imitating memes. "Is Coca Cola rebranding like that because we all started calling 'em fridge cigarettes???," another fan questioned.
Coca-Cola said the refresh was designed to create "one iconic look" across more than 200 markets by updating its packaging and typography.
"This refresh is about being clearer and more consistent in how we show up, wherever people experience our brand," Arnab Roy, president of Coca-Cola Global Category, said in a statement on Monday. "By building on the things people already know and love, we're creating a stronger foundation for growth while staying unmistakably Coca-Cola."

ST. PETERSBURG, FL — In 2025, the American Conference became the first conference in college sports to institute a "minimum investment" threshold for its members.
That meant every school in the conference would be required to spend at least $10 million over a three-year period on revenue sharing. Some schools, like Memphis, cleared that in one year. Others were further away, but Pernetti told The Commercial Appeal at conference media days on July 24 that it's gone well so far.
There have been conversations about expanding it, he said.
"We have talked at our annual meeting with the ADs about the idea of, 'Okay, we're a year in to this thing. We're further ahead than everybody expected we would be. We should have two conversations. The minimum should maybe be higher, and then do we want to designate specific minimums to specific sports."
Asked specifically about a minimum investment threshold for just basketball, Pernetti said those have only been "conversations" and it doesn't mean anything is imminent.

Real Madrid have sent in an official offer to RB Leipzig to sign highly-rated winger, Yan Diomande, on Friday night, according to widespread reports in Europe.
A very busy Friday that saw Rodri's news break out earlier during the day, Mario Cortegana and David Ornstein of The Athletic were among the first ones to report on an offer for the winger. Soon after, Fabrizio Romano, Arancha Rodriguez and others also started reporting on the news.
According to Romano, the offer sent in by Real Madrid was of 90 million euros + 10 million euros in add-ons, which was rejected by Leipzig.
Diomande, a winger who prefers to play on the right, is a good option to provide balance to the team's left-heavy attack, but it remains to be seen whether the club is able to actually bring him in.
Paris Saint-Germain are still in the race to sign Diomande, but everything now depends on the next potential offer from Real Madrid.

Jeff Monken heads into Army football preseason camp feeling pretty good.
"I like our team,'' he said during a Friday press conference at the American Conference football media days in St. Petersburg, Florida. "We've got some positions where certainly we have more experience than others. We've got a relatively inexperienced defense, but that's college football, and at Army we can't sign them to a new contract … we do have graduation. We lost some good players to graduation but really excited about the guys we have coming back.''
Though the American did not produce a preseason poll, nor a preseason all-star team, the Black Knights have been well-represented on the preseason lists produced by national college football magazines, garnering nine selections from Athlon Magazine and 10 from Phil Steele Magazine. As for polls, Steele has Army finishing fifth, Athlon and Lindy's Magazine has Army in fourth and The Sporting News has Army seventh.
Army opens preseason practice on Aug. 5, four weeks ahead of the Sept. 5 opener with visiting Bryant. Monken heads into his 13th season at West Point, coming off a 7-6 campaign, a 4-4 mark in the American and a Fenway Bowl win over Connecticut.

Folks around the continental United States would be hard-pressed to find a 31-year-old NFL free agent still giving back to his hometown high school some 13 years after graduation.
But there sat former Woodlawn defensive back Donovan Wilson Friday afternoon in the Knights' auditorium on Wyngate Boulevard autographing photos and talking with fans, like former Woodlawn coach Jerwin Wilson, while supporters passed out 500 backpacks and others gave free haircuts to youngsters from the surrounding neighborhood.
"I'm just trying to give light to the youth and show some love to where I come from and what I wanted when I was younger," said Wilson, who spent seven seasons with the Cowboys before a separation following last season. "I appreciate being in this position and to be able to do what I'm doing."
Wilson's mother, Michelle Wilson-Johnson, a secretary at Shreveport's Caddo Magnet High School, was responsible for organizing Friday's give-back event. She secured Bos-Man's Barber College to dole out fresh fades, tapers, shape-ups and kid-friendly hair cuts as part of the event. Five barber trainees were on hand and were kept busy with the trimming.
"She's one of the motivations to do what I'm doing, and I appreciate her for that," Wilson said.

Hundreds of people gathered Friday at St. Luke's United Methodist Church for the funeral of Houston Texans co-founder Janice McNair.
"She was exceptional," said Cal McNair, Janice's son and the current CEO and chair of the Texans.
McNair died July 14 of natural causes. She was 89.
Throughout the service, McNair's graciousness, her ability to make others feel seen and her impact on the lives of others were common threads speakers touched upon during the service.

The 2026 SEC media days have come and gone this week in Tampa, Florida, and that means we're one step closer to the college football regular season.
As per usual, the SEC released the Preseason Media Poll All-SEC team on Friday, which was voted on by the media that was on hand covering this week's event. After the Oklahoma Sooners had just three players make the all-league predictions a year ago, OU was much more well-represented in 2026.
On the first team, both kicker Tate Sandell and long snapper Ben Anderson represented the Sooners. Sandell returned after winning the Lou Groza Award last season, while Anderson has established himself as one of the league's best long snappers over the course of his career.
OU had eight players selected to the second team. Wide receiver Isaiah Sategna III, offensive lineman Michael Fasusi, defensive linemen David Stone and Taylor Wein, linebacker Kip Lewis, defensive backs Eli Bowen and Peyton Bowen, and kicker/punter Grayson Miller all got the nod.
Sategna returns as OU's top wide receiver after showing off his explosiveness last year. Fasusi had an impressive true freshman season in Norman, establishing himself as Oklahoma's starting left tackle. Stone and Wein were breakout stars for the Sooners last year on the front line of the defense. Lewis continues to be OU's emotional leader on defense and is the longest-tenured Sooner. The Bowen brothers are back for another year patrolling the Oklahoma secondary, and Miller returns after becoming OU's starter at punter early last season. He put together an impressive year in 2025.

In case one has missed it, LeBron James is now a member of the Philadelphia 76ers. He will be joining a roster with Tyrese Maxey, VJ Edgecombe. Jaylen Brown, and Joel Embiid already featured while also having some serious depth with Dean Wade, Anfernee Simons, Labaron Philon Jr., and others. This is a roster as talented as any in the Eastern Conference.
The Sixers got James on a 2-year $8 million deal as they only had so much money left to spend in free agency. After playing the waiting game to make it work and bring him in on a deal, the Sixers were able to come out as the big winners of the offseason, if they weren't already.
