(NewsNation) — A new study found that a rare but serious brain condition has been identified in a small number of people taking popular weight-loss drugs such as Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro and Zepbound.
Wernicke encephalopathy is a rare neurological disorder caused by a severe deficiency of vitamin B1, also known as thiamine.
GLP-1 prescriptions for kids up more than 30,000% since 2019
Researchers identified 15 cases reported in 2023 and 2024 among people taking GLP-1 medications containing semaglutide, found in Ozempic and Wegovy, or tirzepatide, found in Mounjaro and Zepbound.
Vitamin B1 is essential for proper nerve function. Without enough of it, patients can develop confusion, problems with balance and coordination, and abnormal eye movements.

Ashley St. Clair, former girlfriend of billionaire Elon Musk and mother to one of his children, told Don Lemon she personally witnessed the billionaire using ketamine recreationally and taking psychedelic mushrooms as she opened up about his alleged drug use.
St. Clair, who shares son Romulus with the Tesla and ***** eX chief, made the claims during an interview with Lemon after the podcast host recalled questioning Musk about his acknowledged use of prescription ketamine.
Musk has previously said he was prescribed ketamine for depression, but St. Clair claimed the drug use she witnessed went beyond therapeutic treatment.
"I have family members who have had great success from ketamine or ayahuasca treatments with professionals. The way I saw him –" she said. "Yeah. There's there but that's not the way he was using it. At least from my observation."
Pressed on what she meant, St. Clair replied: "I saw him use it recreationally."

Investigators looking into Hayden Panettiere's death are reportedly focusing on a single pill they believe contained fentanyl.
Multiple law enforcement sources with direct knowledge of the investigation told TMZ that Panettiere took what she believed was oxycodone on the morning of Aug. 16, the day she died at age 36. Their working theory is that the pill had been laced with fentanyl.
The Greenville County Coroner's Office has not announced Panettiere's cause or manner of death, and toxicology results remain pending. TMZ's sources themselves cautioned that their theory still depends on those results.
The new report arrives as federal and local investigators try to determine where drugs and medications connected to Panettiere came from. The Los Angeles Times independently reported before TMZ's latest story that DEA agents and local authorities had been questioning people as part of that effort.
TMZ's sources allege that Panettiere had been obtaining black-market prescription drugs from a longtime source in Los Angeles before traveling to South Carolina on Aug. 15.

Vertex Pharmaceuticals Incorporated (NASDAQ:VRTX) could be positioning itself for its next major phase of growth following its roughly $10 billion acquisition of Crinetics Pharmaceuticals. The deal gives the company immediate exposure to the endocrinology market and provides a new commercial platform beyond its established cystic fibrosis franchise.
On September 3, Citigroup **** yst Geoff Meacham highlighted the strategic importance of the Crinetics acquisition, arguing it could diversify Vertex's business while complementing its existing cystic fibrosis franchise and newer businesses in renal disease, hematology, and pain.
Through the transaction, Vertex Pharmaceuticals Incorporated (NASDAQ:VRTX) gains access to Palsonify (paltusotine), an oral treatment for acromegaly that has already received regulatory approval in Europe. Paltusotine is also in Phase 3 development for carcinoid syndrome **** ociated with neuroendocrine tumors.
Palsonify is particularly important because it provides an immediate commercial revenue opportunity, rather than requiring the company to wait several years for an entirely new drug to reach the market.
Early uptake of Palsonify has been encouraging, supported by expanding physician adoption and improving reimbursement coverage. If that momentum continues, the drug could become an important contributor to Vertex's revenue growth.

On August 13, a federal appeals court ruled in favor of Gilead Sciences, Inc. (NASDAQ:GILD), upholding a preliminary injunction that bars the defendants from importing or facilitating the sale of foreign-market Gilead-branded medications in the US. The US Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit found that the differences between Gilead's HIV medication for the US market and the foreign versions being imported were "material, not theoretical." The controversy began in December 2024 when Gilead Sciences, Inc. (NASDAQ:GILD) filed suit against a number of companies, including third-party administrator Meritain Health, pharmacy benefit manager ProAct, and pharmacies Rx Valet and Advanced Pharmacy, alleging illegal imports of its best-selling HIV drug Biktarvy.
The dispute dates back to December 2024, when Gilead Sciences, Inc. (NASDAQ:GILD) sued a group of companies, including third-party administrator Meritain Health, pharmacy benefit manager ProAct, and pharmacies Rx Valet and Advanced Pharmacy, alleging illegal imports of its top-selling HIV drug Biktarvy. The lawsuit arose from a specific instance in which a patient in Maryland received the medicine in the mail from Turkey, with label instructions written in Turkish.
A federal district court in Baltimore ruled in Gilead's favor and ordered a preliminary injunction, determining that the company was likely to succeed on its Lanham Act trademark violation and unfair competition arguments. As the case continued, the injunction was increased to include new sellers like CanaRx, ElectRx, and ScriptSourcing. The defendants filed an appeal with the Fourth Circuit, and the district judge declined to suspend the injunction while the appeal was pending, thus the import restriction has been in effect the entire time. The recent ruling maintains the order rather than overturning it.
In court documents, Rx Valet stated that the Turkish-sourced Biktarvy was chemically identical to the US version, which was offered at a significantly higher price. Meritain, for its part, said that it has never supported getting non-FDA-approved pharmaceuticals from outside the US and denies the claims, despite being named as a defendant.
The Fourth Circuit rejected the defendants' main argument that the imported and domestic versions of Biktarvy are interchangeable. The court's judgment that the two versions differ materially, not just in packaging or labeling, but also in the quality-control protocols that each version goes through before reaching a patient, challenges the basic argument that these alternative funding programs have used to support their business model.

In 2024, Catalent tapped direct lenders for a $4.2 billion term loan to fund its acquisition by Novo Holdings. Last month, the drug manufacturer refinanced with a $4.1 billion syndicated loan that it says will cut its annual interest expense by about $100 million.
Catalent's move captures a shift under way in the leveraged finance market, according to a new report from DC Advisory. Redemptions from retail investors are contributing to the erosion of private credit's pricing advantage, creating an opening for banks to win refinancing business.
The problems in the retail private credit market show few signs of abating.
All the largest direct lenders, such as Ares, Apollo and KKR, also run business development companies, the most common form of credit fund aimed at individual investors, all under varying degrees of pressure to redeem investors.
PitchBook LCD reported on Wednesday that investors in Cliffwater's direct lending interval fund sought to redeem 16% of shares outstanding in the third quarter, down from 17% in the prior quarter.

Biohaven (BHVN) stock plummeted Thursday after the company paused enrollment in a midstage study of its seizure treatment due to safety concerns.
The Food and Drug Administration is now requiring Biohaven to ***** s the potential for human toxicity from a metabolite in the drug, opakalim. Opakalim is in testing as a treatment for focal onset seizures. But, in rats, it proved toxic.
Dosing is still ongoing. But the rodent toxicity setback likely delays potential regulatory approval. That's a boon for Xenon Pharmaceuticals (XENE), which is in late-stage testing with its drug, azetukalner. Both drugs work by opening potassium channels in the nervous system to calm overactive brain cells.
On the stock market today, Biohaven stock dropped 14.7% to 12.79. Shares fell below their 21-day and 50-day moving averages on the news, MarketSurge shows. Xenon stock slid a fraction to 58.80.
To ask for FDA approval, Biohaven will need the results of studies called RISE-2 and RISE-3. The hold was placed on the former, but the latter is still ongoing. The company expects to have the results from RISE-3 later this year.

Egyptian television presenter Sarah Khalifa has been sentenced to death, but the Sept. 5 judgment does not end her legal fight.
A Cairo Criminal Court sentenced the 39-year-old presenter and 11 other defendants to death after convicting them in a major synthetic-drug manufacturing and trafficking case. Prosecutors had charged 28 people in connection with the alleged network.
Khalifa has repeatedly denied involvement. Her lawyer, Mohamed El-Gendy, now says she is expected to sign appeal papers Tuesday, Sept. 15, beginning another stage in a case that has drawn attention far beyond Egypt.
Egypt changed its felony appeals system in 2024. A Felony Appeals Court can reconsider the evidence, the prosecution's case and the role attributed to each defendant before a death sentence becomes final.
The Cairo Criminal Court convicted Khalifa and 11 co-defendants of participating in an organized criminal group involved in obtaining materials used to manufacture synthetic narcotics for trafficking.

On August 27, AstraZeneca PLC (NYSE:AZN) and Amgen Inc. (NASDAQ:AMGN) scored a shared clinical victory. Positive high-level results from the Phase III CROSSING trial showed that their co-developed severe asthma drug, TEZSPIRE, achieved statistically significant and clinically meaningful improvements across both co-primary endpoints, histologic remission and the frequency/severity of dysphagia, and all key secondary endpoints at week 24 in patients with eosinophilic esophagitis. These benefits were sustained through week 52 across both tested doses, accompanied by a safety profile consistent with its approved indications. While CROSSING highlights their joint R&D success, a closer look at their standalone financial performance reveals distinct growth trajectories.
Both pharmaceutical giants delivered solid Q2 2026 results, but AstraZeneca is showing stronger overall financial momentum. AstraZeneca PLC (NYSE:AZN)'s Q2 revenue increased 6% year over year to $15.38 billion, supported by its Oncology franchise, which grew 18% in H1 to $14.12 billion, and its Rare Disease portfolio, which increased 13%. Core EPS rose 21% to $2.63, beating expectations, while management reaffirmed its full-year 2026 outlook for mid-to-high single-digit revenue growth and low double-digit Core EPS growth.
Amgen Inc. (NASDAQ:AMGN) reported Q2 revenue of $10.1 billion, up 10% year over year, while non-GAAP EPS increased 4% to $6.29. Although its key growth products advanced 26%, mature products faced significant biosimilar pressure, with Prolia revenue declining 32% and XGEVA falling 34%. Amgen nevertheless raised its 2026 revenue guidance midpoint to $39.4 billion.
Overall, AZN holds the financial edge due to stronger EPS growth, broader portfolio momentum, and less exposure to the biosimilar erosion affecting AMGN's mature products.
Amgen's bull case is supported by robust growth in key products, which increased 26%, and $3.5 billion in Q2 free cash flow, providing substantial capital flexibility. Wells Fargo raised its Amgen price target to $435 from $400 on September 4, citing potential upside from HORIZON and pipeline ****** ets such as olpasiran. New Phase III VESALIUS-CV data also showed Repatha reduced the risk of death by 20% in high-risk adults without a prior heart attack or stroke, with heart attack risk reductions emerging as early as six months. However, accelerating biosimilar competition affecting legacy franchises such as Prolia and XGEVA remains a key risk to sustained margin expansion.

On September 3, a caller asked whether to rotate out of artificial intelligence stocks and add to Eli Lilly and Company (NYSE:LLY) rather than chase Johnson & Johnson (NYSE:JNJ) or Cardinal Health (NYSE:CAH). Mad Money host Jim Cramer said:
Well, I'll tell you… I think it's always good to look at Lilly as a stock that I think has a lot of things that are going well, but I want to wait. Well, actually, you know, tell you the truth… It's pulled back. I think you're fine, I think you're fine to add some. I'm going to okay that. And I understand JNJ's moved a great deal. It's been a great club hit and Cardinal has been terrific, too. So, thank you for referencing those two really good ones.
Cramer was also asked to rank J&J, Lilly, and Pfizer Inc. (NYSE:PFE) by another caller. He said:
Okay, so let's take them. J&J is best of breed, AAA balance sheet, 18 drugs… You're not going to have any expiration problems, okay? Lilly has one huge drug that we know is going to be a franchise for many, many years. I do like a diversifying pattern more. And Pfizer's starting to creep up and is playing catch-up, but I need a reason to recommend it. So I'm going to say J&J and Lilly and then Pfizer.
The latest results largely explain the differences in Cramer's ranking. Eli Lilly and Company (NYSE:LLY) has the strongest growth profile by a wide margin. Second-quarter revenue jumped 48% to $23 billion, while reported EPS increased 26% to $7.94 and non-GAAP EPS rose 33% to $8.38. Mounjaro revenue rose 91% to $9.9 billion, while US Zepbound revenue increased 44% to $4.9 billion. The company also raised its 2026 revenue guidance to $85 billion-$87 billion.

Sean "Diddy" Combs landed a major win in his defamation case against attorney Ariel Mitchell and her client Courtney Burgess, who claimed to have videos showing the music mogul **** ually **** aulting minors and celebrities at his "freak off" **** parties.
New York federal judge John P. Cronan denied Mitchell's motion to dismiss the lawsuit in a Sept. 4 ruling obtained by USA TODAY, giving Combs the green light to move forward with his $100 million legal action.
Combs first sued Burgess, Mitchell and Nexstar Media for $50 million in January 2025 but amended his complaint seven months later seeking an additional $50 million in damages. In the filing, he accused the lawyer of damaging his reputation by vouching for Burgess' allegations and making allegedly false statements of her own, "including that a police report corroborated an accusation of rape against Combs and that Combs had used drug-laced baby oil to incapacitate his victims."

BOSTON (AP) — The highest court in Massachusetts on Thursday issued a public reprimand against a district court judge who was accused of allowing an immigrant to escape U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement custody.
The case dates back to 2018 when Judge Shelley Joseph was accused of colluding with the immigrant's attorney and a court officer to allow him to escape out a back door of the courthouse after a hearing on charges that included drug possession.
The decision by the Supreme Judicial Court follows a recommendation for the reprimand by a hearing officer for the Commission on Judicial Conduct. It concluded that Joseph created the appearance of impropriety and failed to comply with the law.
"The respondent's statements during that conversation, including her proposal to detain (the immigrant) overnight in State custody, and her conduct in instructing the clerk to turn off the court room audio recording system, created an appearance of impropriety in violation of her duties," according to the Supreme Judicial Court ruling.
Joseph's attorney, Elizabeth Mulvey, argued at the commission hearing last year that the case had been distorted over time and that everyone had come to believe that her client "let an illegal immigrant out of the door" with half the public believing she should be jailed and the other half calling her a "folk hero."

Is it better to own a company already selling drugs or one with a potential blockbuster in testing? Investors are weighing Axsome Therapeutics (NASDAQ:AXSM) against Viking Therapeutics (NASDAQ:VKTX) to decide.
Axsome focuses on commercializing treatments for depression and sleep disorders, showing significant revenue growth. Viking is a clinical-stage developer targeting the massive obesity market but has no products on the market yet. Both represent different stages of growth within the biotech world, making them popular choices for healthcare-minded portfolios.
Axsome develops and sells treatments for central nervous system conditions such as depression, migraines, and narcolepsy. It is a prominent name among biotech stocks, with a portfolio that includes Auvelity, Sunosi, and Symbravo. The company recently entered a settlement that grants license rights to five generic manufacturers for Sunosi starting in 2040, providing long-term clarity on its patent life and market position. In its latest annual report, filed in early 2026, the company noted it had over 900 full-time employees to support its commercial reach.
In FY 2025, revenue reached nearly $638.5 million, marking growth of close to 65.5% compared to the prior year. This increase was driven by the continued expansion of its key central nervous system treatments into new geographic markets. The company reported a net loss of approximately $183.2 million, resulting in a negative net margin, which is the percentage of revenue left after all expenses are paid, of roughly 28.7%. Some investors focus on the P/S ratio to value the business relative to this growing revenue.
As of December 2025, the debt-to-equity ratio was nearly 2.7x, meaning the company uses significant debt relative to its equity. The current ratio of approximately 1.6x indicates it has $1.60 in ****** ets for every $1.00 in liabilities due within a year. Free cash flow, or cash from operations minus capital spending, was nearly negative $93.9 million as the company continues to invest in its commercial pipeline. This spending is intended to support the long-term growth of its approved products and the development of new candidates.

If you hold Pfizer (PFE) or Zoetis (ZTS), you hold the same idea: a branded medicine becomes a standard of care and keeps earning for years, in people or in animals. That is where it stops. Pfizer is buying replacements for older drugs losing exclusivity. Zoetis is cutting its effective price to keep the franchises it has. Same bet, two opposite defenses.
Pfizer lifted the midpoint of its 2026 revenue guidance by $500 million while cutting its COVID-19 revenue expectation to about $4 billion from about $5 billion. The rest of the company covered that gap: excluding COVID products, the underlying business grew 5% operationally in the second quarter of 2026, with Eliquis and Padcev among the drivers management named.
Zoetis cut its 2026 outlook and now expects revenue to decline 1% to 3% on an organic operational basis. Management said sales trends through July had not yet indicated market stabilization. Pfizer's raise rests on business it can already see. Zoetis has yet to see visibility on market stabilization.
Pfizer is buying growth and cutting cost, and expects about $9.7 billion in total net savings through 2029. What that funds is an aim, not a guide: a risk-adjusted high single-digit revenue CAGR from year-end 2028 through year-end 2033.
The pipeline behind that aim is expensive to get wrong. A Phase III lung cancer trial that missed its primary endpoint and, to a lesser extent, the removal of revenue projections for Oxbryta led to $4.3 billion of noncash intangible **** et impairments recorded in the second quarter of 2026. While an unadjusted price-to-EBIT comparison puts Pfizer at 23.9 against Zoetis at 9.2, aligning the two on operating income brings them to 9.7x and 9.0x, largely erasing the paying-up premium.

Biopharmaceutical leader Kiniksa Pharmaceuticals (KNSA) is approaching a new buy point in the wake of a strong quarterly sales report. That makes Kiniksa stock Thursday's pick for IBD 50 Growth Stocks To Watch from Investor's Business Daily.
Kiniksa develops and commercializes medicines for cardiovascular, autoimmune and autoinflammatory diseases. Its only drug, Arcalyst, treats recurrent pericarditis, a condition in which the sac protecting the heart, the pericardium, becomes inflamed. The risk of recurrence increases with each subsequent flare-up of pericarditis, according to the Arcalyst website.
The company expects to replace Arcalyst with a next-generation version, now called KPL-387, in 2028 or 2029.
While Arcalyst requires a weekly under-the-skin shot, KPL-387 is a monthly injection. KPL-387 sales are expected to start slow at $21.7 million in 2028, growing to $173.7 million, $486.3 million and $1.03 billion over the next three years.
During the second quarter, Arcalyst generated $243.6 million in sales, growing 55% year over year. That crushed estimates from FactSet that called for $227.7 million.

Harbor Funds, an investment management company, released its Q2 2026 investor letter for "Harbor Mid Cap Value Fund". The letter can be downloaded here. Global equities experienced a sharp rally in Q2 2026, with the S&P 500 returning 15.2%, its strongest quarter since 2020, driven by a shift from software to hardware in the Artificial Intelligence capital spending cycle. Small caps outperformed large caps, with the Russell 2000® gaining 21.5% compared to the Russell 1000's 15.1%. Growth stocks led within large caps, while Information Technology rose about 33%, contributing significantly to the S&P 500's return. The Harbor Mid Cap Value Fund returned 13.99%, outperforming its benchmark, the Russell Midcap Value Index. Strong stock selection in Consumer Discretionary, Real Estate, and Financials contributed positively, although an underweight in Information Technology negatively impacted results. Despite ongoing economic uncertainties, the investment philosophy remains committed to a disciplined value approach. Check the fund's top five holdings for its best picks in 2026.
In its second-quarter 2026 investor letter, Harbor Mid Cap Value Fund highlighted The Kroger Co. (NYSE:KR). The Kroger Co. (NYSE:KR) is a leading supermarket chain that operates combination food and drug stores, multi-department stores, marketplace stores, and price impact warehouses. On September 04, 2026, The Kroger Co. (NYSE:KR) closed at $58.59 per share. Over the past month, The Kroger Co. (NYSE:KR) returned 1.83%, but its shares are down 15.42% over the past year. The Kroger Co. (NYSE:KR) has a market capitalization of $35.89 billion, and its stock has traded within a 52-week range of $54.15 to $76.58.
Harbor Mid Cap Value Fund stated the following regarding The Kroger Co. (NYSE:KR) in its Q2 2026 investor letter:
"Other detractors were The Kroger Co. (NYSE:KR) in the Consumer Staples sector and Matador Resources in the Energy sector. Kroger was down more than 20% as slowing same-store sales and inflation weighed on the stock. Competition from lower cost providers has forced Kroger to reduce prices to maintain market share."
The Kroger Co. (NYSE:KR) is not on our list of the 40 Most Popular Stocks Among Hedge Funds. According to our database, 56 hedge fund portfolios held The Kroger Co. (NYSE:KR) at the end of the second quarter, up from 52 in the previous quarter. While we acknowledge the potential of The Kroger Co. Pamela Anderson says a doctor told her she probably had only 10 years to live after she was diagnosed with hepatitis C, leaving her terrified about what would happen to her two young sons.
Anderson revisited the diagnosis while accepting amfAR's Award of Courage at the organization's Sept. 6 gala in Venice. She described hepatitis C as a "death sentence" at the time because the treatments then available had not given her the certainty that later antiviral drugs would provide.
She ultimately completed a 12-week antiviral treatment and announced in 2015 that she was free of the virus. During her Venice speech, however, Anderson said the years surrounding the diagnosis affected her decisions and left behind feelings of shame and guilt that did not disappear with the medical result.
The 59-year-old actress ended her remarks by rejecting the victim label attached to difficult periods in her life. "I'm not a victim, I'm a victor," she told the audience. "I'm not the damsel in distress, no matter how easy that role is to play."
Anderson publicly disclosed in 2002 that she had hepatitis C. Looking back on that period at the amfAR Gala Venezia, she said the prognosis she received was stark.
