A 65-year-old retiree has $1.2 million saved and plans to start withdrawals next year. His 27-year-old son has been following a group of social media accounts touting AI stocks, and he's urging his dad to move $300,000, a quarter of his savings, into a handful of them.
When the father hesitated, his son said he was scared of making money. The father isn't necessarily scared; he's cautious, and at his stage of life, that's a reasonable instinct. But he also doesn't want to dismiss his son or miss out on growth entirely.

For workers wondering how far artificial intelligence could go, JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon has a straightforward answer — AI is going to change the job market, whether people are ready for it or not. Some jobs will disappear, others will change and new ones will likely emerge. But Dimon warned that the speed of that transition could matter just as much as the technology itself.
"As a business person, my view is don't put your head in the sand," Dimon said at the World Economic Forum's annual meeting in Davos, Switzerland, in January. "It is what it is. We're going to deploy it. Will it eliminate jobs? Yes. Will it change jobs? Yes. Will it add some jobs? Probably."

A married couple, ages 45 and 43, got spooked during a steep market selloff and sold their entire $600,000 brokerage portfolio. Eight months later, stocks have climbed back, their money is still sitting in a savings account, and each spouse blames the other for pushing the sale.
The argument misses the real problem. They're not stuck because of one bad decision; they're stuck because they never had a plan for what to do when markets fell. Getting back in the right way matters more than figuring out who panicked first.

An inheritance can make two people equally wealthy on paper and still leave them with very different ideas about what to do next.
Two brothers each received $400,000 and took their money in opposite directions — one toward rental properties, the other toward getting out of debt. Before long, one brother was already predicting which of them would have the richer retirement.
"That's why I'll retire rich and you won't," he told his brother.

A 66-year-old recently retired engineer wants to give each of his three adult children $19,000 a year from the couple's $1.5 million portfolio. He wants to see them enjoy the money now rather than wait for an inheritance.
His wife, 64, disagrees. She thinks the kids should earn it like they did and worries that $57,000 a year in gifts could put their own retirement at risk.
The tax rules make those gifts relatively straightforward. The harder question is whether the couple can afford them.

Dividend-paying stocks are taking a beating as surging Treasury yields make bonds a more competitive income source, creating a difficult environment for baby boomers who lean on dividend funds and individual stocks to cover living expenses in retirement.
Utilities, real estate, and materials have all experienced share-price declines as climbing bond yields have drawn income-seeking investors away from dividend stocks. The 10-year Treasury yield has remained north of 5%, recently hovering between 5.2% and 5.3%, while the 20-year has hit 5.68% and the 30-year has reached 5.62% — marks last seen more than two decades ago, according to Benzinga.
The pain shows up clearly in fund performance. The Invesco S&P 500 High Dividend Low Volatility ETF (SPHD) lost 7.59% over the trailing month, and the iShares Select Dividend ETF (DVY) shed 6.02% in the same window, according to CNBC. The Vanguard High Dividend Yield Index ETF (VYM) gave back 3.85% over the past month. The WisdomTree U.S. Quality Dividend Growth Fund (DGRW) stands apart, with its heavy tilt toward technology helping limit its one-month loss to just 0.81%.
The Federal Reserve raised its overnight rate by a quarter percentage point on Sept. 16, and markets are pricing in additional increases, keeping pressure on rate-sensitive dividend sectors. The 10-year yield touched 5.342% and the 30-year reached 5.683%, their highest marks in 24 years, driven in part by rising public debt, geopolitical tensions, and the prospect of a prolonged high-rate environment.
Despite the pressure, financial advisors caution retirees against making reactive moves. "The worst thing that a retiree could do is sell a high-quality dividend payer at depressed prices to chase income somewhere else in the stock market just to get higher yield," Timothy Chubb, chief investment officer at Girard, a Univest Wealth Division, told CNBC. Chubb said he would rather own a company growing 4% to 5% annually with a 3% dividend yield than pursue an 8% yield from a deteriorating business.

Amazon founder Jeff Bezos once challenged Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez's (D-N.Y.) argument that billionaires cannot legitimately earn their fortunes.
During a May 2026 interview with CNBC's Andrew Ross Sorkin at Blue Origin's rocket factory in Florida, Bezos responded to Ocasio-Cortez's statement that no one can earn $1 billion without exploiting workers, abusing market power or breaking rules.
The Amazon executive chairman rejected the premise, illustrating his argument with a hypothetical burger restaurant that starts with 10 employees and gradually expands to 1,000 locations as customers embrace its products.

Gen X has spent decades getting squeezed between bigger generations. Now, one 38-year-old says the group may have one final trick up its sleeve — disappearing.
Realtor Freddie Smith, 38, laid out his prediction in a TikTok about why he rarely talks about Gen X. His argument is pretty simple. Gen X is independent, uninterested in the culture-war noise and focused on one thing — making it to retirement.
"They are the most independent group of people that we will ever meet," Smith said in the TikTok. "They raise themselves. They've been independent their whole life."

Humanoid robots are showing meaningful progress beyond controlled demonstrations, with advances in autonomy, dexterity, and the ability to perform repetitive real-world tasks. But widespread commercial deployment still remains a work in progress.
After spending a week meeting with leading robotics labs, engineers and investors across the San Francisco Bay Area, researchers found that most humanoid robots remain in development, training, and tele-operated demonstrations. America's retirement bill is getting harder to ignore. Social Security is already the largest expenditure in the federal budget, and as more Americans reach retirement age, an increasingly large share of government spending is going toward older Americans. Podcast host and NYU Stern professor Scott Galloway thinks the imbalance is becoming a problem for everyone else.
"We now spend $5 on seniors for every $1 on children. Enough already," Galloway wrote in his "The Grown-Up Tax Bill" column in 2025. He argued that Social Security is part of a much larger transfer of wealth from younger and poorer Americans to an older, wealthier generation.

A Federal Reserve rate hike is largely priced in for Wednesday, but JPMorgan says the S&P 500 could still swing anywhere from 1% higher to 2% lower depending on how Chair Kevin Warsh frames the move.
A surprise decision to hold rates steady could prove painful. JPMorgan Chase & Co. (NYSE:JPM) estimates the index could fall 1.25% to 1.75% if the Fed leaves rates unchanged.
Polymarket traders put the chance of a 25-basis-point hike at 89% Wednesday morning, compared with 11% for no change, with roughly $193 million traded on the decision.
JPMorgan argues that an unexpected hold could raise doubts about the Fed's willingness to contain inflation, potentially pushing longer-term Treasury yields higher as investors demand more compensation for inflation risk.

A Federal Reserve rate hike is largely priced in for Wednesday, but JPMorgan says the S&P 500 could still swing anywhere from 1% higher to 2% lower depending on how Chair Kevin Warsh frames the move.

OpenAI ruled out an initial public offering for 2026 on Saturday, pointing to unresolved safety concerns around rapidly advancing artificial intelligence and the need to address alignment challenges facing the industry.
"Right now would be an ill-advised moment to go public, and we don't feel pressure on that," CEO Sam Altman told Fortune.
When Fortune asked whether 2027 was more realistic than 2026, he said, "I would say not 2026. We have a lot of work to do, including meeting the safety and alignment requirements of this moment and figuring out how the industry and governments can work together."

ARK Invest founder Cathie Wood called warnings that artificial intelligence could wipe out humanity "ridiculous," while welcoming the industry's push to slow advances at the AI frontier so safety measures can catch up.
Wood also expects President Donald Trump to block new federal rules. Polymarket traders currently give a qualifying U.S. AI safety law just a 19% chance of being enacted before 2027, on about $114,000 in trading.
Wood called the industry's slowdown pledge a "positive step." Drawing on her experience investing through the tech and telecom bubble, she said she welcomed industry leaders publicly confronting AI's risks.
"Half of the solution is understanding the problem," Wood told Reuters.

After watching home prices explode during the pandemic, one recent buyer has a question that probably sounds familiar to anyone who has looked at real estate lately: How can this possibly continue?
The buyer, who recently purchased a home in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, asked Reddit's r/RealEstate community where the ceiling is if home prices keep appreciating while incomes struggle to keep pace.
"At some point don't we just reach a point where no one can afford a home?" they asked. They were even worried that continued appreciation could eventually make their own home difficult to sell because there wouldn't be enough buyers who could afford it.

Angel investor and All-In Podcast host Jason Calacanis warned that allowing Chinese electric vehicles into the U.S. could devastate domestic automakers even as their low prices attract consumers, reacting to Sen. Elissa Slotkin's (D-Mich.) claim that President Donald Trump could loosen barriers as part of a China deal.
"This would be the end of the US automotive industry — but consumers will love to buy these cars," Calacanis wrote in an X post on Wednesday. He added, "Everywhere I go, from the Middle East to Europe to Mexico, the streets and Uber fleets are filled with dirt-cheap Chinese EVs," calling such U.S. access "a disaster."
