A teenager with type 1 diabetes is hoping to inspire others with the condition as he moves from simulator racing to real cars, his father has said.
Zachary Houghton, from Redhill in Surrey, completed his first Formula Ford race at the end of August, driving a racing car on a circuit for the first time.
The 17-year-old told BBC Radio Surrey: "I reckon I'll be able to get back in the car again - it will just be [about] finding the funding because motorsport isn't cheap."
His father, Scott Houghton, said his son wanted "to be an advocate and an inspiration" to those with the condition.
"Zachary would love his journey to show other young people living with type 1 diabetes that the condition doesn't have to stop them chasing the things they want to achieve," he said.

Over the past five years, Eli Lilly (NYSE: LLY) stock managed a total return of 376%. If the stock managed a repeat over the next five years, share prices would top $5,500. Much of its current performance boost is thanks to enthusiasm over its GLP-1 offerings.
Are the same factors that led to the healthcare company's sharp rise likely to recur? The simple answer is no. While its metabolic GLP-1 weight-loss therapies helped spike revenue, it's not likely to happen again. Still, there are reasons to believe the pharmaceutical stock could double in value over the next five years, making a $5,000 investment in Eli Lilly stock worth more than $10,000 in five years. Here's why.
Missed Nvidia in 2009? This Rare Signal Is Flashing Again. In 2009, a "Double Down" signal flashed for a little-known chipmaker called Nvidia. For the first time in years, that same "Total Conviction" signal is flashing for a company 1/100th the size of Nvidia. Continue »
Eli Lilly, through tirzepatide, marketed as Mounjaro for type 2 diabetes and Zepbound for chronic weight management, is still a leader in the GLP-1 **** e. Tirzepatide is showing to be an incredibly versatile incretin-based peptide drug.
Excess weight is tied to many health problems, and tirzepatide could expand to adjacent indications. It has already been approved to treat obstructive sleep apnea, and on Aug. 28, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved Mounjaro to lower the risk of major adverse cardiovascular (CV) events, including cardiovascular death, non-fatal heart attack, or non-fatal stroke in adults with type 2 diabetes who are at high risk.

Starting statin therapy shortly after a type 2 diabetes diagnosis may not only protect the heart — it may also be linked to a lower dementia risk.
A large study presented at the European Society of Cardiology Congress in Munich on Aug. 30 found that adults who began taking a statin within one year of their type 2 diabetes diagnosis had a 15% lower relative risk of developing dementia over 10 years compared to those who did not take the medication within five years.
Even for those who delayed starting a statin for one to five years, there was still a 10% lower relative risk, according to the findings, which were published in The Lancet Regional Health – Europe.
3 Things To Avoid In Middle Age Could Mean 13 More Years Without Dementia, Study Finds

The keto diet may have surprising benefits for liver health, a new study suggests.
The research, published in the journal Cell Metabolism, studied 42 adults who had obesity, prediabetes and excess liver fat.
In a randomized clinical trial, the participants were ***** igned to three weight-loss diets – a low-carb ketogenic diet, a Mediterranean diet and a low-fat, mostly plant-based diet.
Secret To Weight Loss May Be Hiding In Your Gut, New Study Suggests
The keto diet's calories consisted of about 4% carbohydrates and 73% fat, according to the study. The Mediterranean diet provided about 50% of calories from carbohydrates and 35% from fat, while the low-fat diet provided about 70% of calories from carbohydrates and 15% from fat.

Medtronic (NYSE: MDT), one of the world's largest medical device makers, was once considered a stable blue chip stock. But over the past five years, it has declined by more than 30% due to supply chain constraints, higher costs, quality control issues, and competitive pressure. However, Medtronic's stock is worth buying again for four simple reasons.
In fiscal 2026 (which ended this April), Medtronic's revenue grew 8.4% (and 5.8% organically) to $36.4 billion, marking its strongest top-line growth in ten years.
Continue »
That acceleration was driven by 9.3% organic growth in its cardiovascular business, which accounted for more than 38% of its enterprise revenue. All of its other segments (neuroscience, medical surgical, and diabetes) also grew organically.
Medtronic expects its organic revenue to rise 7.25%-7.75% in fiscal 2027, representing another multi-year high and easily exceeding its historical average of around 5%. Once again, that growth will be led by its rising sales of cardiovascular devices. From fiscal 2026 to fiscal 2029, ****** ysts expect its reported revenue to grow at a 5% CAGR.

Eli Lilly and Company (NYSE:LLY) has agreed to acquire privately held Merida Biosciences for up to $2.875 billion in cash, including an upfront payment and milestone-based payments. The deal is expected to close in the fourth quarter of 2026.
The acquisition expands Lilly's immunology pipeline and gives it access to Merida's antibody-engineering platform, which is designed to selectively eliminate disease-causing autoantibodies while preserving normal immune function. Merida's lead candidate, MER511, is in Phase 1 development for Graves' disease and thyroid eye disease (TED). Early data showed substantial reductions in disease-related antibodies along with a favorable initial safety profile.
The deal also fits Eli Lilly and Company (NYSE:LLY)'s broader strategy of using the cash generated by its obesity and diabetes franchises to diversify into additional therapeutic areas. Lilly has been active in acquisitions throughout 2026, making Merida the latest addition to its expanding pipeline.
The biggest benefit for Eli Lilly and Company (NYSE:LLY) is pipeline diversification. The company has generated significant growth from Mounjaro and Zepbound, but that success also increases its reliance on the obesity and diabetes markets. Adding Merida gives Lilly another potential growth platform in immunology.
Merida's technology could be particularly valuable if it works beyond its lead program. Rather than broadly suppressing the immune system, its approach is designed to target the antibodies responsible for specific autoimmune and allergic diseases. This could potentially offer a more targeted treatment strategy and create opportunities across several conditions.

In spite of the fact that he currently plays for a team that many fans around the National Hockey League like to room against, there was a huge outpouring of love and support for Toronto Maple Leafs forward Max Domi earlier this summer when reports emerged indicating that Domi was struggling to walk following back surgery. It was a sign of just how much respect the Domi name carries around the sport of hockey and how much respect Max himself has earned as a fierce competitor who has overcome a significant health challenge in diabetes and manages to play at the highest level of hockey.
On Sunday, we got a terrific sign that Domi may in fact be on the mend when he published an update to his Instagram account that makes it clear he is about to embark on the next chapter of his life. Although the caption simply reads "I love you so much" there's no question what the message represents given the image that accompanied it.
In the picture Domi's longtime girlfriend Estelle can be seen showing off a ring on her finger, and I'm sure you can figure out the rest.
As it turns out the proposal came on Estelle's birthday with Estelle making the announcement herself on her own Instagram page.
Domi can even be seen standing in one of the photos shared by Estelle, which is a great sign given the scary news that came out earlier this summer.

Pfizer Inc. (NYSE:PFE) and Abbott Laboratories (NYSE:ABT) offer investors two very different dividend stories. Pfizer (NYSE:PFE) is working to rebuild growth before major patent expirations arrive, while Abbott (NYSE:ABT) is combining a long dividend-growth record with a more diversified healthcare portfolio. Pfizer (NYSE:PFE) may offer turnaround potential, but Abbott's (NYSE:ABT) latest results present the steadier investment case.
Pfizer's (NYSE:PFE) non-COVID portfolio is beginning to carry more of the business. Revenue excluding Comirnaty and Paxlovid grew 5% operationally in fiscal Q2 2026, while launched and acquired products generated $3.2 billion and increased 18% operationally. Padcev revenue rose 23% operationally to $667 million, supported by increased market share in first-line locally advanced or metastatic urothelial cancer and uptake in muscle-invasive bladder cancer. The Vyndaqel family generated $1.76 billion, up 8% operationally, while Lorbrena grew 37% operationally. This broader contribution is encouraging because Pfizer needs several products to offset declining COVID revenue and future patent losses.
Stronger non-COVID performance allowed Pfizer (NYSE:PFE) to raise the midpoint of its 2026 revenue guidance by $500 million, despite reducing its COVID-product forecast from approximately $5 billion to $4 billion. Its cost programs should provide further support, as management expects combined savings of approximately $9.7 billion through 2029 across its cost-realignment and manufacturing-optimization initiatives.
Abbott's (NYSE:ABT) advantage is the breadth of its growth. Second-quarter sales increased 13% on a reported basis and 4.8% on a comparable basis, while adjusted EPS rose 4% to $1.31. Medical Devices remained Abbott's (NYSE:ABT) largest segment and an important growth contributor, with sales rising 8.4% on a comparable basis. Growth was led by electrophysiology, rhythm management, heart failure, and diabetes care, with continuous-glucose-monitor sales increasing 9.5% comparably.
The Exact Sciences acquisition also expanded Abbott's (NYSE:ABT) diagnostics business. Diagnostics revenue reached $3.09 billion, rising 42.3% reported and 2.9% comparably. Within the segment, Cancer Diagnostics delivered 13.3% comparable growth as Cologuard benefited from increasing numbers of new and repeat users.

I think David Tepper made a mistake selling UnitedHealth Group (NYSE: UNH), and not a small mistake either. When I look at what this company is doing and where healthcare is headed, I would rather buy the stock than walk away.
For context, here's what happened: Tepper is a billionaire hedge fund manager, the founder and president of Appaloosa Management. Tepper didn't trim his stake in UnitedHealth. He sold every share, about 90,000 in total, refocusing his portfolio toward artificial intelligence (AI) with purchases of Amazon (NASDAQ: AMZN), Micron (NASDAQ: MU), and Taiwan Semiconductor (NYSE: TSM), which now account for nearly 40% of his fund. That tells me his move was about concentrating on a narrower theme, not about UnitedHealth losing its edge. In earlier filings, UnitedHealth ranked among his top positions, accounting for more than 10% of the portfolio, indicating he once saw it as a core holding.
Continue »
So what changed? The obvious worry is medical cost pressure, especially from GLP‑1 weight loss drugs and broader inflation in care. UnitedHealth's Q2 2026 numbers show medical costs of $75.36 billion and a medical care ratio of 86.7%, down from 89.4% a year earlier but still above the mid-80s range the company had framed as its target (lower is better). Some investors see that as a sign that margins will stay under pressure and that insurers will never fully catch up to medical care's rising cost curve. Tepper may have decided that the headache was not worth the trouble.
When I dig into the details, I see something different. UnitedHealth is not sitting still and hoping costs fall. It's reshaping how care is delivered across its UnitedHealthcare insurance arm and Optum pharmacy management services. On GLP‑1 drugs, the company has drawn a clear line, covering them for diabetes and cardiovascular risk under tight medical necessity rules and restricting coverage for weight loss alone. It has launched programs like Total Weight Support to combine medication with coaching and digital tools, which gives it a way to manage outcomes rather than paying for pills without structure. That kind of strategy matters when drug costs can top $1,000 per member each month.

Investors looking for rock-solid dividend stocks can hardly do better than turning to Dividend Kings. This refers to a group of corporations that have raised their payouts for at least 50 consecutive years, an impressive accomplishment. However, not all Dividend Kings are created equal. Take Abbott Laboratories (NYSE: ABT) and Johnson & Johnson (NYSE: JNJ). Both healthcare giants belong to that group, and they have moved in opposite directions this year: Johnson & Johnson has beaten broader equities, while Abbott Laboratories has been a market laggard. Which of them is a better buy today?

Abbott has faced several challenges over the past couple of years. First, revenue and earnings growth haven't been strong, particularly in its diagnostics and nutrition segments. Second, the medical device specialist has faced some legal and regulatory headwinds. For instance, it has dealt with lawsuits claiming that its baby formula caused health issues in premature babies.
These have somewhat tarnished the company's public image. However, the healthcare leader is looking to turn things around. It can still count on its core medical device segment, particularly its diabetes care unit, which remains one of its main growth drivers. Abbott's FreeStyle Libre, a line of continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) systems that help patients with diabetes track their blood sugar levels, continues to perform well.
Also important, the company acquired Exact Sciences earlier this year in a cash transaction valued at $21 billion. This deal brings Cologuard, a leading non-invasive diagnostic test for colorectal cancer, under Abbott's umbrella. It will help the company tap into the large and growing cancer diagnostic market and boost sales within its diagnostic division. So, Abbott could bounce back, and in the meantime, its dividend program remains intact. It has increased its payouts for 54 consecutive years.

(NEXSTAR) – From unexpected babies to "Ozempic teeth," the ultra-popular class of GLP-1 medications is turning out to have a few unanticipated side effects. Emerging research shows the drugs, which have proven effective in treating obesity and diabetes, may also be useful in treating addiction.
The medications' full potential is coming to light as more people are prescribed a GLP-1, which includes the brand names Ozempic, Mounjaro, Wegovy and Zepbound. As 15% of Americans say they've tried a GLP-1, researchers are learning more about how it impacts all aspects of life, not just diet.
"This drug has been available in the medical community since 2005," said Dr. Eugene Lucas, professor and coordinator of the Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner Program at Wilkes University. "And over time, when physicians are ordering these medications for people with obesity, diabetes, they're finding that if they have a concurrent addictive disorder, and specifically alcohol, that they're either cutting back or stopping their alcohol use."
A large study of more than 200,000 people in Sweden found using a GLP-1 drug was ***** ociated with a decreased risk of hospitalization from alcohol use disorder.
Another study by researchers at the Washington University School of Medicine, which looked at 600,000 veterans with type 2 diabetes, found the medications were tied to a lower risk of developing any kind of substance use disorder.

Drugmaker Bristol-Myers Squibb Company (NYSE:BMY) is putting real money behind its confidence in American manufacturing. On August 10, the company said it will spend about $2.3 billion on a new plant in Houston, part of a larger $40 billion U.S. investment pledge.
On the very same day, British regulators cleared Eli Lilly and Company (NYSE:LLY)'s weight-loss pill Foundayo for both weight management and type 2 diabetes, making the UK the first country in Europe to approve the drug.
Bristol-Myers Squibb Company (NYSE:BMY)'s new Houston campus, roughly 600,000 square feet, will churn out everything from small-molecule medicines to more complex biologics and antibody-drug conjugates. It is expected to create close to 500 skilled jobs and about 2,000 construction jobs between 2027 and 2030. CEO Christopher Boerner framed it as a vote of confidence in America's biopharma future. The timing lines up with a broader industry trend: drugmakers from Lilly to Johnson & Johnson to Pfizer are all racing to build more in the U.S. as tariff pressure from the Trump administration ramps up.
Eli Lilly took the opposite direction this week, expanding outward instead of inward. Foundayo's UK approval opens a major new market, even though the pill isn't covered by the National Health Service yet and still trails Novo Nordisk's Wegovy pill there.
So which strategy actually serves shareholders better, building strength at home or chasing growth abroad?

Missing the 6-month Medigap enrollment window at 65 allows insurers to deny coverage or charge more based on pre-existing conditions like diabetes.
Only 4 states offer meaningful Medigap protections beyond the federal window: Connecticut, New York, Massachusetts, and Maine. Most beneficiaries are left subject to medical underwriting.
Before leaving Medicare Advantage, confirm remaining protected rights, compare multiple Medigap insurers, and secure approval before finalizing any switch to Original Medicare.

At 65, an Ohio woman picked a zero-premium Medicare Advantage plan because she was healthy and the sales brochure looked cheaper than adding a Medigap policy to Original Medicare. Two years later, her doctor diagnosed Type 2 diabetes, started her on insulin, and referred her to an endocrinologist outside the plan's network. Now 67, she wants to switch to Original Medicare with a Medigap Plan G so she can use a broader range of specialists.

On August 10, Eli Lilly and Company (NYSE:LLY)'s weight-loss pill Foundayo won approval in the UK, becoming the first country in Europe to clear the drug for both weight management and type 2 diabetes. It's only the second GLP-1 pill approved in Europe, arriving two months after Novo Nordisk A/S (NYSE:NVO)'s Wegovy pill got its own UK approval in June.
Novo already has a head start in the European pill market and in patient numbers worldwide. Lilly is betting that a pill with no food restrictions can close that gap.
That raises the real question: can Lilly's convenience edge actually win over doctors and patients fast enough to catch up, or does Novo Nordisk A/S (NYSE:NVO)'s lead already look too big to close?
Foundayo can be taken at any time of day without food or water restrictions, unlike the Wegovy pill, which must be taken on an empty stomach with a 30-minute wait before eating. Lilly said the drug will launch in the UK later this month through private prescription, priced below Mounjaro's roughly £330 monthly list price. Foundayo already brought in $98 million in US sales last quarter. Eli Lilly and Company (NYSE:LLY)'s overall 2026 revenue guidance now sits at $85 billion to $87 billion, up from its earlier forecast, due to strong demand for its weight-loss and diabetes drugs.
Foundayo's uptake has been much slower than that of the Wegovy pills in the US, something Eli Lilly and Company (NYSE:LLY) CEO David Ricks has said reflects the time it takes for a brand-new medicine to build trust with doctors and patients. NHS access in the UK isn't automatic either, since it depends on a coming cost-effectiveness review. That means most early UK patients will have to pay privately. Foundayo is also still under review in the European Union, while the Wegovy pill has already secured a positive recommendation there.

News of Hayden Panettiere's death on Aug. 16 was shocking to fans who had watched her grow up as a vibrant presence onscreen in Remember the ******* ans, Heroes and more.
The actress, who died of an apparent overdose, sadly follows several other young stars whose work defined the early aughts, but didn't get to grow old. At only 39, Panettiere's Ice Princess costar Michelle Trachtenberg died of complications from diabetes mellitus. The Famous Jett Jackson star, Lee Thompson Young, committed suicide at age 29, while Aaron Carter died of an accidental drowning while under the influence.
Ahead, we remember some of the child stars from the early 2000s, who died before they turned 40.

Eli Lilly and Company (NYSE:LLY) cleared a notable regulatory hurdle on August 10, when Britain's drug regulator authorized the company's oral GLP-1 drug orforglipron, becoming the first country in Europe to approve the pill. Shares of LLY increased more than 2% in response to the announcement, a modest but insightful reaction for a company whose weight-loss franchise has become the single most important driver of its market value.
The UK's Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency approved orforglipron, offered under the brand name Foundayo, for weight loss and maintenance in obese adults, as well as select overweight individuals with at least one weight-related health condition. The approval also addresses increasing blood sugar control in people with type 2 diabetes.
What sets Foundayo apart from Lilly's other weight-loss medications, as well as the majority of the GLP-1 category in general, is the format. Unlike injectable drugs like Lilly's Zepbound or Novo Nordisk A/S (NYSE:NVO)'s Ozempic, Foundayo is a small, non-peptide GLP-1 receptor agonist that is taken as a single daily tablet. It can also be taken at any time with no food or water restrictions, making it a far more convenient regimen than some oral peptide alternatives that require fasting windows around dosing.
The clinical data that supports the approval is strong. In the ATTAIN-1 trial, which tracked 3,127 individuals with obesity for 72 weeks, participants on the 36 mg dose lost an average of 11.2% of their body weight, as opposed to 2.1% on placebo, and more than half of those on that dose lost at least 10%.
The authorization is crucial, but it is not the final step. Foundayo is not currently available through the NHS in the UK, and the drug's journey to that larger market is through the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence, which is completing its own cost-effectiveness study, with a decision expected on November 18. Until NICE decides, UK patients seeking the medicine will have to pay out of pocket or get it privately, a scenario that is already playing out with competing products in the category.

Of course, the list of GLP-1 weight loss injectables and the public's ability to rattle them off has vastly expanded since news of oh-oh-oh Ozempic shot to the top of public consciousness in 2023.
By then, the This Is Us star was already pretty well-versed in the type 2 diabetes medications that can be prescribed for weight loss. And also quite averse.

Rosie O'Donnell shared her experience taking the weight-loss drug Mounjaro, including the side effects. The former talk show host said she has "never felt better." However, she revealed that she had lost 12 pounds without making any changes, leading her to worry that she might have cancer.
O'Donnell spoke about the details on the August 11 episode of the Good Hang with Amy Poehler podcast. The 64-year-old said, as quoted by Us Weekly, "Three years ago, the doctor told me … they said, 'You have diabetes, can you take a shot?' I said, 'I think so. I don't know. I've never done a shot. Is it insulin?' … They said, 'No, it's this new drug and it really helps with your blood sugar.'"
O'Donnell said she was never told that the medication could cause rapid weight loss. She said doctors were focused on getting her "numbers" down. After starting Mounjaro, O'Donnell went to ***** u but said she could not eat after her son Blake proposed to Teresa Garofalow Westervelt. The couple got married in 2024. O'Donnell is also the mother of Parker, 31, Chelsea, 28, Vivienne, 23, and Clay, 13.
The comedian said she was overwhelmed with emotion after missing her mother, Roseann, and wishing she could have witnessed Blake's engagement and new chapter in life. She initially believed that emotional experience explained her weight loss. However, two weeks later, "I get on the scale. I call my doctor crying. I must have cancer. I've lost 12 pounds and I haven't done anything. It's been three weeks since I started that medicine."
O'Donnell, who first opened up about taking Mounjaro in January 2023, explained that losing weight had always been difficult for her, even when she actively tried. She said the drug could help many people with obesity but criticized the high cost of the treatment.

Eli Lilly (NYSE:LLY) delivered a quarter that forced Wall Street to catch up to its own numbers. On August 5, the company reported second-quarter revenue of $23.0 billion, up 48% from a year earlier, and used the momentum to raise its full-year sales and profit targets. Shares moved higher the same day as investors focused on how fast the obesity franchise is still expanding.
The headline number came from Mounjaro and Zepbound. Mounjaro revenue jumped 91% to $9.9 billion, while Zepbound climbed 46% to $4.9 billion, and together they anchored a quarter where US sales rose 33% to $14.4 billion, and international sales rose 80% to $8.6 billion. Growth was not confined to the diabetes and obesity lineup either. Lilly's immunology, oncology, and neuroscience products grew a combined 121%, showing the newer parts of the portfolio are starting to contribute in a real way.
Management responded by lifting full-year revenue guidance to a range of $85 billion to $87 billion, up from $82 billion to $85 billion previously. Lilly is also plowing the cash back into its pipeline, closing acquisitions of Orna Therapeutics, Ajax Therapeutics, Centessa Pharmaceuticals, and Kelonia Therapeutics during the quarter, agreeing to buy AtaiBeckley afterward, and committing another $4.5 billion to expand manufacturing in Indiana. On the drug development side, three more Phase 3 trials of the experimental triple agonist retatrutide read out positively, giving Lilly a complete data package to support a planned obesity application submission in the first quarter of 2027.
The same quarter that produced 48% revenue growth also showed what that growth is costing. Realized prices fell 13% company-wide, with international pricing down 36% largely tied to Mounjaro's addition to China's national reimbursement drug list, a trade-off Lilly is making for volume and market access. The acquisition spree carried a real accounting price tag too. Acquired R&D charges hit $2.8 billion in the quarter, versus just $154 million a year earlier, which is why reported EPS grew only 26% even as the non-GAAP figure grew 33%.
Asset impairment and restructuring charges of $703 million, largely tied to the Kelonia and Centessa deals, added further drag, and the effective tax rate climbed to 23.3% from 16.5% because of the non-deductible nature of those charges. R&D spending rose 14% to $3.8 billion, and marketing and administrative costs rose 25% to $3.4 billion, a reminder that funding a pipeline this active and prepping for a wave of new launches is not cheap. None of this changes the underlying growth story, but it does mean the path from strong sales to clean reported profit is getting ****** pier as the deal-making continues.

Coleen Nolan has shown off the results of her 3.5-stone weight loss after dropping from a size 20 to a size 14 and reaching the point where she says she no longer wants the number on the scale to fall.
The 61-year-old Loose Women star has documented her transformation throughout 2026 after partnering with clinical weight-loss company Voy. She has said she now has more energy, an improved back and greater confidence in the clothes she wears.
The partnership has also generated speculation because Voy offers prescription weight-loss treatments, including injectable medications. Nolan had previously expressed reservations about weight-loss jabs, but she has never publicly said that she personally used Mounjaro, Wegovy or another injection to achieve her 3.5-stone loss.
What Nolan has said is that a pre-diabetes diagnosis changed how seriously she viewed her health after years of yo-yo dieting. She joined Voy looking for a longer-term approach and has since said she has reached a weight she is happy to maintain.
"I feel so much better health-wise," she told The Sun. "My back's improved, I've got more energy. And confidence-wise, of course it helps." Nolan also made clear that she was no longer trying to continue losing weight.

Shares of Medtronic (NYSE: MDT), one of the world's largest medical device makers, have declined by more than 30% over the past five years. Higher costs, supply chain bottlenecks, quality control issues, and competitive pressure in surgical robotics all weighed on its stock.
Yet Wall Street remains bullish on Medtronic, with an average price target of $98.44 and a top target of $121. I believe it could rise more than 40% from its current price of $86 and hit that high-end target by the end of this year for a few simple reasons.

Back in March, Medtronic spun off its diabetes unit as MiniMed (NASDAQ: MMED) to streamline its business. It's also restructuring its business to expand its higher-margin cardiovascular and neuroscience portfolios and to integrate more AI features into its surgical planning products.
In fiscal 2026 (which ended in April), Medtronic's revenue grew 8.4% to $36.4 billion (or 5.8% organically) and marked its strongest top-line growth in ten years. From fiscal 2026 to fiscal 2029, **** ysts expect its revenue and EPS to grow at CAGRs of 5% and 13%, respectively.

After a year at the helm, Novo Nordisk's CEO Maziar Mike Doustdar's task of closing the gap to pacesetter Eli Lilly doesn't look to be getting any easier.
Doustdar joined Novo at the height of spiralling erosion to rivals in the obesity and type 2 diabetes market segments. While the Danish drugmaker has since gained approval for oral Wegovy, a drug that set a record-breaking pace for a glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonist (GLP-1RA) at launch, other pipeline products have had mixed clinical results. Earlier this week, cardiovascular disease drug ziltivekimab failed a Phase III trial, while CagriSema fell short in a non-inferiority trial comparing it to Lilly's tirzepatide.
Coupled with ongoing sales decline, dealmaking presents an obvious avenue in which to boost pipeline offerings. Novo has already said it is actively targeting bolt-on acquisitions, with Doustdar reiterating during the Q2 earnings call that large-scale, transformative deals are still a way off.
"I'm very proud of our internal R&D and pipeline, but no company has a monopoly on good ideas. I've also said we are in every data room to try and see who else has a better idea, who else can give us ******* ets that we can bolt on, and complement what [our internal R&D teams] are doing," Doustdar said.
"I'm a person who never starts with a no to one day [being able to conduct transformative M&A], but you have to be in a very different situation than Novo Nordisk is in today," he added.

Aug 5 (Reuters) - Sales of Eli Lilly's Zepbound and Mounjaro injectable weight-loss and diabetes drugs soared during the second quarter, easily beating Wall Street estimates and widening the gap with Danish rival Novo Nordisk.
The trillion-dollar company also posted better-than-expected quarterly results and raised its full-year revenue forecast, and its shares jumped over 5% in early trading.
The strong results are likely to reassure investors that demand for Lilly's GLP-1 treatments remains resilient despite pricing pressure and intensifying competition from Novo, which launched an oral version of its Wegovy weight-loss drug in the U.S. earlier this year.
Sales of diabetes drug Mounjaro rose 91% to $9.94 billion, beating ****** ysts' estimates, while obesity drug Zepbound brought in $4.93 billion, compared with expectations of $4.73 billion. The two drugs accounted for 64.7% of Lilly's revenue in the latest reported quarter.

Baron Capital, an investment management company, released its Q2 2026 investor letter for the "Baron Health Care Fund". A copy of the letter is available to download here. The Fund gained 11.99% during the quarter, compared with the 10.48% gain for the Russell 3000 Health Care Index and the 15.44% gain for the Russell 3000 Index. Since inception, the Fund appreciated 10.61% on an annualized basis, compared with 10.02% for the Benchmark and 14.83% for the Index. Strong stock selection in pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, health care equipment, and life sciences tools and services supported the Fund's outperformance, although limited exposure to managed care stocks reduced relative returns. The Fund remains positive on health care due to improving biotechnology funding, strong acquisition activity, recovering managed care margins, and growth from an aging population, chronic disease, medical innovation, and higher health care spending. In addition, please check the Fund's top five holdings to know the best picks in 2026.
In its second-quarter 2026 investor letter, Baron Health Care Fund highlighted Eli Lilly and Company (NYSE:LLY) as a notable performance contributor. Eli Lilly and Company (NYSE:LLY) discovers, develops, manufactures, and markets human pharmaceutical products in the United States and internationally. On August 03, 2026, Eli Lilly and Company (NYSE:LLY) closed at $1,121.36 per share. The one-month return of Eli Lilly and Company (NYSE:LLY) was -9.24%, and its shares gained 46.40% over the past 52 weeks. Eli Lilly and Company (NYSE:LLY) has a market capitalization of $1.06 trillion.
Baron Health Care Fund stated the following regarding Eli Lilly and Company (NYSE:LLY) in its Q2 2026 investor letter:
"Pharmaceutical company Eli Lilly and Company (NYSE:LLY), currently best known for its diabetes and obesity GLP-1 therapies, contributed to performance as commercial execution and pipeline data reinforced investor confidence in the company's long-term leadership. All three major pharmacy benefit managers now cover Lilly's obesity portfolio, including its new daily oral GLP-1, Foundayo. This marks a reversal from last summer, when CVS Caremark provided preferred coverage for Novo Nordisk's Wegovy and raised concerns about a potential price war. The shift suggests that patients and physicians prefer Zepbound and are driving demand. Clinical trial data further reinforces our view that Lilly has one of the strongest next-generation metabolic pipelines in the industry. Phase 3 data showed retatrutide delivered weight loss in the high-20% range at higher doses and nearly 20% at lower doses, while maintaining excellent tolerability. We are also excited about eloralintide, where Phase 2 data showed Zepbound-like efficacy and tolerability, with combination data expected soon. Long term, we continue to view Lilly's portfolio as the gold standard in a category that we believe can exceed $150 billion."

This has been an active year in the mergers-and-acquisitions landscape across the biopharmaceutical industry. One of the more notable deals was Vertex Pharmaceuticals' acquisition of Crinetics Pharmaceuticals for $10 billion in cash (the transaction hasn't closed yet). This is the largest acquisition in Vertex Pharmaceuticals' history, and it will enable the biotech giant to gain several promising pipeline candidates in endocrinology. Could there be an even more massive acquisition on the horizon in the industry? It's hard to say for sure, but if there is, Viking Therapeutics (NASDAQ: VKTX) may be the acquisition target.
Continue »
According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, a little over 70% of adults in the country are overweight or obese. Excess weight is linked to a range of serious health problems, including diabetes, heart disease, and many others. Recent breakthroughs are helping address the issue. Anti-obesity medicines are allowing patients to lose weight and reduce their risk of developing a range of conditions. But this market is still in its early stages and is projected to expand rapidly over the next decade. According to some estimates, it will be worth $190 billion in 2035, compared to just $79 billion last year.
No wonder, then, that many pharmaceutical giants are looking to dip their toes in this **** e. But discovering and developing brand-new therapies from scratch in any field is expensive and time-consuming. That's why well-established drugmakers often prefer to acquire companies with promising mid and late-stage **** ets. That's where Viking Therapeutics comes in. The company's portfolio includes subcutaneous VK2735, currently in phase 3 clinical trials, as well as an oral version of the drug, which should begin late-stage studies by year-end. Further, Viking Therapeutics developed VK3019, another weight-loss candidate, which recently started phase 1 clinical trials.
Viking Therapeutics has one of the more impressive weight-loss pipelines among mid-cap biotechs, making it a great target for a pharmaceutical leader looking to fast-track the process and land some highly promising anti-obesity pipeline candidates overnight. Viking Therapeutics' phase 3 studies for VK2735 are expected to be completed by late 2027. If the results are very strong, the company's shares will soar, making it a much more expensive acquisition target. So, if any pharmaceutical giant is going to make a move, it probably will be before then.
