Aug. 29—GRAND FORKS — High school recruiting has traditionally been the lifeblood of college athletics.
The advent of NIL (name, image, likeness) payments and the transfer portal hasn't changed that. Yet for some basketball teams in the Summit League, the new variables are transforming how coaches recruit high school athletes.
"High school is incredibly important," Oral Roberts coach Kory Barnett said. "It's huge for you to be able to still build out that one, two, three years of getting to know a kid and the ones that really fit you. That's incredibly important. But with where the portal stands ... you have to be ready to adjust."
Coaches nationwide face massive attrition from season to season. UND, for example, will enter 2026-27 with just three returning players. North Dakota State lost eight players to the transfer portal.
Each spring, programs are forced to rebuild on the fly. The portal provides myriad options, with players entering from every division of college basketball.

Evaluating Woody Marks through a fantasy football lens requires a realistic ******* sment of a player whose team has already shown us exactly how they feel about his standalone role. Selected as a fourth-round pick last year, Marks struggled with efficiency, posting a sluggish 3.6 yards per carry. While he did manage to catch three touchdowns, and that is certainly not nothing in PPR formats, the broader context of the offseason is incredibly telling. If the Houston Texans were genuinely impressed with what they saw from Marks, they would not have aggressively brought in David Montgomery to take over the backfield.
This is an offense starved for upside outside of Nico Collins, who drafted perimeter help last year and explicitly added to their backfield this summer as they continue to try to support what might be the best defense in the NFL.
The Texans are clearly gearing up to make a playoff run, and their offseason moves suggest that Marks is not going to be a featured part of it, at least in an optimal world.

The good news for Marks is that this offensive line should be noticeably better than it was a year ago, which should theoretically help boost some of his disappointing efficiency numbers if he is actually given a chance.

Last season, Jacksonville Jaguars kicker Cam Little drilled a 68-yard field goal that became the longest field goal ever made in an NFL game. That kick was actually shorter than the 70-yarder he hit during the preseason. Then, just last week, Kansas City Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker hit a 69-yarder of his own.
Absurdly long field goals are becoming a pattern in the NFL, and it's almost surely going to continue this year.
Over the past few seasons, the NFL has quietly made some changes to its kicking **** that seem to have made things noticeably easier on kickers. That, coupled with the recent kickoff changes that have made a drastic impact on starting field position, has led to an increase in incredibly long field goals.
Ahead of the 2025 season, the NFL quietly passed a resolution that allowed teams to prepare their kicking **** – known in the league as "K-balls" – before game day, rather than during game day. The change got very little publicity, likely because **** ody really expected the change to make a drastic difference. But it seems to have, and Philadelphia Eagles defensive coordinator Vic Fangio took notice.
Following a game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in which kicker Chase McLaughlin hit a 65-yard field goal and a 58-yard field goal, Fangio brought up the quiet rule change, saying that it made a "drastic" impact on the kicking game. Fangio said the impact has been so drastic that he compared it to the steroid era of Major League Baseball.

The Indiana Fever are ending the season incredibly strong as they continue to rack up wins. On Friday night, they comfortably took care of the Connecticut Sun.
Led by Caitlin Clark and Kelsey Mitchell, the team romped to a victory in which they scored 111 points. Clark and Mitchell combined to put up 68 of those.
Both stars had 34 points on the night, with Caitlin also grabbing five boards and dishing out 12 ***** ists. Mitchell recorded three rebounds and four ***** ists, too. It was another eye-catching performance.

Liverpool have been pushing to sign Bradley Barcola for months. Now they seem to have finally got it over the line as news broke on Thursday that they'd struck a massive deal with Paris Saint-Germain.
The Athletic are among those reporting that a £100m initial deal has been agreed in principle, potentially rising to around £120m with add-ons. Liverpool are going all-in on Barcola to be their star on the left, joining Alexander Isak and Florian Wirtz as a nine-figure signing.
But here's the thing: they won't stop there. Liverpool haven't actually replaced Mohamed Salah, after all, and the Egyptian has left a void on the right flank that must be filled.
The squad actually lacks right-wingers entirely and while the club will hope to have replaced Salah's quality with Barcola, they still need someone to actually play his position. Finding that player has been incredibly difficult, however, as the market on that flank is genuinely awful.

Bayern Munich board member for Max Eberl has been a busy beaver the past few days, but his work is not done (in truth, it never is).
On good note, though, Eberl is having very positive interactions with the camp for star striker Harry Kane. As it stands, things seem to be progressing swimmingly with negotiations over a new contract.
"The contract negotiations, I have to be completely honest, have been incredibly harmonious, with both sides working together extremely well. We have a player who very much wants to stay and a club that very much wants to extend his contract. Of course, there are still details that need to be worked out. We have a very professional, yet pleasant, way of communicating with each other," Eberl told Sky Germany's Kerry Hau.
Kane, whose current contract ends after this season is expected to get at least a two-year extension, maybe three. Surely, that is one of the most important details being debated at the moment between the two side.

It's been less than two months since their star-studded nuptials and the couple are already being driven apart by their demanding schedules. However, even if they are thousands of miles away from each other, the newlywed bliss is still very present.

WASHINGTON, Aug 25 (Reuters) - New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani said on Tuesday he did not support an upcoming event in his city featuring the leader ‌of the Hindu nationalist group that is the ideological parent of India's ruling Bharatiya Janata ‌Party (BJP).
Mohan Bhagwat, chief of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), is scheduled to speak at a Manhattan event on Saturday, according to the event's website.
"I don't support the rally, but I don't know if the city has any jurisdiction on cancelling a private event," Mamdani, who is the first Muslim and Indian American mayor of New York City, said when asked if the event should be cancelled.
"The vision of India that I was taught ‌by my family and one that ⁠I grew up being very familiar with was of a pluralistic society of a secular Republic that believed in the belonging of each and every person ⁠who was from India. And it has been incredibly troubling to see the rise of a movement that is predicated on an exclusionary vision."

The NWSL has a new media partner to replace Victory+. The league reached a deal with Roku that will put its package of Sunday night matches on the free Roku Sports Channel beginning Aug. 30.
Roku will become the exclusive streaming home of eight NWSL Sunday night matches over the remainder of the 2026 season before expanding to 25 games in 2027, the league said. The agreement gives the NWSL a replacement for the Sunday night slate previously carried by Victory+, which the league abruptly dropped last month.
Financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed, but the league said Roku emerged from a competitive process, citing the platform's reach, accessibility and ability to make matches easier for fans to discover.
"We were incredibly encouraged by the level of interest in this package and the competitiveness of the process, which speaks to the growing value of NWSL media rights," NWSL commissioner Jessica Berman told The Athletic. "Ultimately, Roku stood out as the right partner because of its tremendous scale, commitment to discoverability and ability to reach both existing fans and entirely new audiences. We're excited to build on an existing relationship with Roku at an important moment for our league and for women's soccer."
The deal comes less than a month after the NWSL terminated its agreement with Victory+, the free streaming platform. The Athletic previously reported that unfulfilled payments from Victory+ contributed to the league's decision to end the relationship, according to league sources that spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss the deal freely.

This week's episode of 'Hard Knocks' was the most revealing and simultaneously the most gut-wrenching to watch for Seattle Seahawks fans.
The season-ending injuries to Bud Clark and Jake Bobo were both shown on the broadcast, punctuating preceding segments in which we got to see Clark with his fiancee and their young son, as well as Bobo and his heart-to-heart with receivers coach Frisman Jackson.
Clark, who broke his ankle on the Seahawks' first defensive play against the Tennessee ******* ans, immediately screamed out, "My sh-t just broke!" after an audible snap could be heard as he planted his right ankle. Incredibly, through the intense pain after suffering an injury that would leave him sidelined for months, Clark kept a remarkably positive attitude as he made his way onto the cart.
"Yeah, we gravy, we gravy," Clark told the athletic trainers.
Clark later said to Coach Mike Macdonald, "Hell yeah, coach, we gravy. It hurts like a motherf—ker, though."

The Jacksonville Jaguars held their first joint practice with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and while there were some ups and downs overall, the defense had an incredibly strong day — so strong that Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield openly admitted that the practice was "eye-opening."
In a post-practice press conference, Mayfield said if this had been a real game, Tampa Bay would have lost, and that Jacksonville was more physical than they were.

When offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb thinks back to how Keelon Russell won the Alabama football starting quarterback job, he thought of moments like this one.
Alabama was in the red zone on third down during the team's second fall scrimmage, and the offense faced a zeroed-out look, an all-out blitz. The clock was ticking and Russell had less than 10 seconds to work with. The quarterback fell back on his training. He made checks on protection and made the throw he needed to.
"Everything that you think like, 'Oh, is a young quarterback going to be able to do that?'" Grubb said. "But we have a ton of confidence in him. He's playing confident. He's operating at an incredibly high level right now."
It was the showcase of an athletic ability that set Russell apart in the quarterback battle against Austin Mack. But it was also a showcase of why athleticism was not the only reason why Russell won the job in the first place.
"I told him if that's all they ever say about you, that would be an insult," Grubb said. "And you know he he takes that very seriously that he knows you know playing quarterback and understand process and how to get through reads quicker is what's going to make him a complete player. And, you know, I would never want that stereotype for him that he ends up just being a a runaround guy back there. And he's not."

Prince Harry is enraging his estranged brother, Prince William, even more by being incredibly self-righteous and confident ahead of his big move back to the U.K., a source tells Examiner.

The S&P 500 is up 12.1% in 2026, gaining about 11.1% over six months and 3.1% over three. Moreover, the Nasdaq Composite climbed 12.6% year to date and 14.4% over six months, though it was down nearly 0.4% over three months, while the Dow has risen 10.8%, 7.4%, and 5.9%, respectively. All three indices are running ahead of their late-August 2025 pace. Now, according to TheFly, UBS just reset its S&P 500 outlook for the rest of the year.
However, that doesn't mean that the ride's been easy.
Stocks just wrapped up a losing week as higher Treasury yields, inflation worries, and ongoing tensions around Iran tested a rally that's already carrying lofty valuations. AI stocks wobbled even as corporate earnings remained incredibly strong.
That tension makes UBS's move interesting, as it's not simply chasing an index that has already rallied into double digits.
That said, UBS now sees greater room for stocks to climb through year-end, supported by an unusually robust profit engine.

AnnaLynne McCord has married Danny Cipriani after the couple publicly asked fans to help fund their wedding. The 90210 alum shared the news in an Instagram Reel on Sunday. McCord said she married "the love of my life" the day before. She also called the wedding a blessing.
McCord and Cipriani launched a Honeyfund page last month to raise money for their wedding. The couple asked fans to give any amount toward their dream wedding and honeymoon. They quoted $100 for the marriage license, $1,000 for the rehearsal dinner and $1,200 for the flowers. The registry also allowed donations from $10 to $5,000.
The couple had raised $14,200 by Friday, according to The U.S. Sun. McCord told the outlet that she received "death threats" after launching the page. Some people called her "despicable," and she said others accused her of trying to get money from wedding guests. She also said some people donated $10 just to leave negative messages.
McCord confirmed her marriage in her Instagram video and called it "incredibly timeless." She praised every part of the event, from the rituals to the moments she shared with Cipriani. "Happy first day being AnnaLynne Cipriani to me," she said. The couple reportedly plans to hold two more wedding ceremonies in London and Cambodia.
After a long and on-and-off dating relationship, Cipriani proposed to McCord on Christmas Day 2025. The couple met on Raya, the celebrity dating app, and dated for years until 2020 when they parted ways. They reunited in 2024, and Cipriani shared their romance on Instagram in April. How many roster spots are up for grabs as the Green Bay Packers enter the final week of the preseason? It's possible there's not as many as you think. While things can and often do change late in the process, especially with a joint practice and the preseason finale still to go this week, the Packers' roster is starting to solidify before Sunday's final cutdown day.
To see how many spots are still in question, we compared 53-man roster predictions from three sources: Justis Mosqueda of Acme Packing Co., Rob Demovsky of ESPN and Matt Schneidman of The Athletic. The idea here was to identify which players made all three 53-man roster predictions, and then determine who is on the roster bubble.
There wasn't much to separate the individual projections, suggesting the roster is being viewed similarly by those on the outside. Is there a similar consensus inside Lambeau Field? We'll see.
The following players were on each 53-man roster projection. Incredibly, 50 players made all three. While not all of those players are stone cold roster locks, there might only be a few roster spots truly up for grabs entering the final week.

I asked myself a really tough question on Sunday. What am I looking forward to more, the start of the Notre Dame football season or the end of the Notre Dame football offseason? A philosophy major out there will probably tell me that the two can't be separated, but of course they can.
We don't need to debate that question, but I'm positive we can all agree that we are ready for the Notre Dame offseason to be over.
Even though all offseasons can kind of suck for one reason or another, this offseason in particular has been somewhat torturous. It has been almost 9 months since the Irish last played a football game, and EVERYTHING has run its course. Usually I bask in the fun of the offseason, but maybe the podcast hiatus took more joy out of that time of year than usual.
Notre Dame being left out of the playoff was rough enough, but watching Indiana and Miami play for the national championship was an incredibly jagged pill to swallow.

A Rotherham school has welcomed a local world champion boxer to launch its boxing scholarship programme.
Maltby Academy Trust said it was "incredibly proud" of the programme, which offers "elite-level coaching with high-quality education" for 16 to 19 year-olds.
Sheffield's Dalton Smith, the current World Boxing Council (WBC) super-lightweight **** le holder, joined other fighters from the region for a workout at the launch event, and shared stories from his career.
Smith hailed the programme, saying: "You've got the exercise, a healthy routine and a positive way of dealing with things, especially with mental health being such a big part of society now."
Organisers said the scholarship aimed to keep young people in education while learning boxing skills - with the potential to develop careers in coaching.

Aug. 23—A wonderful tradition dating to 2018 played out Saturday morning in Urbana — bigger and better than ever.
A total of 72 girls' swimmers and divers from Urbana, Champaign Central, Centennial, Uni High, St. Thomas More and Mahomet-Seymour participated in the C-U Relays, a service project and charity event that brings rivals together in advance of the competitive season.
What takes place out of the pool is highly impressive.
Teams and families collect snacks, diapers and Pull-Ups for children in Crisis Nursery's care. After the meet, swimmers, divers and coaches deliver the donations to Crisis Nursery's Touch-a-Truck event in Champaign.
"We are incredibly proud of these 72 young women for coming together not only as athletes, but also as members of our community," Urbana coach Amanda York said. "The meet is a great example of how high school athletics can extend beyond competition and provide opportunities for teamwork, service, friendship and community involvement."

For most franchises, the preseason is about checking boxes and getting through what most people consider one of the most annoying times of the year. Teams are in the dog days of camp; the preseason games are mostly just a depth exhibition, and there is very little that comes from them other than injuries.
But the Cleveland Browns are not a normal franchise. Of course, an August Saturday in Cleveland, Ohio has become a major headline. There is an entire conversation to be had about the postgame press conference and how Deshaun Watson handled it. That can be found here.
This piece focuses solely on what happened between the white lines, and it was a tale of two completely different quarterbacks.
Shedeur Sanders got the start, and he took full advantage of his opportunity. He was flirting with a nearly flawless performance before a pass that was maybe a yard behind his receiver got deflected into the air and was intercepted. Other than that one play, he was in control; he was confident, he had great operation, and he was incredibly decisive.
Sanders finished the day going 9-for-11 for 74 yards, one touchdown and one interception.

The 2026 Dutch Grand Prix was supposed to be a triumphant home race for Max Verstappen, but it ended in absolute disaster before the first lap was even completed. Navigating a treacherous, damp-but-drying Zandvoort circuit on slick tyres, Verstappen suffered a massive shunt in the final corner, spearing his Red Bull into the barriers and bringing out an immediate red flag.
While the sheer violence of the impact left the home crowd in stunned silence, former Formula 1 World Champion Nico Rosberg immediately took to the Sky Sports F1 broadcast to dissect exactly what went wrong. According to Rosberg's detailed ***** ysis, Verstappen's race-ending crash wasn't caused by a mechanical failure or contact, but rather a microscopic misjudgment of the circuit's drying racing line.
The opening lap of the Grand Prix was defined by incredibly tricky mixed conditions. While the track was dry enough for the entire grid to start on slick tyres, significant damp patches remained off the ideal line, particularly through the high-speed banking of the final corner.
Speaking alongside Karun Chandhok on the broadcast, Rosberg highlighted that Verstappen took an unusually tight trajectory through the sweeping right-hander. "Max is clearly tighter than everybody else," Rosberg observed during the replay. Now, just in time for an undefeated, "Return the Glory," "They Know What's Coming and Still Can't Stop It" football season, I'm excited and honored to take on the role of site manager and help shape where The Smoking Musket goes from here.
Taking over a site and community with this much history and love from Mountaineer fans is not something that I take lightly. I fully realize that I have D'or Fischer-sized shoes to fill and if I'm being honest, I would have never wanted to take on this role without the countless hours of entertainment that the previous stewards of this community gave me. The bottom line is that The Smoking Musket made being a WVU fan more fun for me, and I hope to carry on this tradition.

I found this program the way a lot of people find the things that end up mattering most, by accident, mid channel surf, unable to look away. What kept me is what keeps most of us: that team has never played it safe a day in its life. Read option before it had a name, a coach who'd rather win ugly than lose pretty, quarterbacks who run like the play design is a suggestion. Chivas goal scoring finally appeared in the Apertura 2026 when they defeated Tijuana by a 5-2 score. Chivas finally scored more than one goal in a Liga MX game during the season after they were able to convert their chances days after the news came that their top goal scorer, Armando Gonzalez, was transferred to Olympiakos in Greece. Tijuana came into the match tied in first place but they had a poor defensive display that Chivas took advantage of. Chivas will now travel south to face off against Pachuca while Tijuana returns home where they will host Pumas.
The 1st half started with a two hour and thirteen minutes rain delay. While the stadium crew did a huge effort to get the field in playable conditions, the field was drenched in a lot of areas. A good combination play ended with Efrain Alvarez getting the ball in the area but his left footed shot went wide. A left footed shot from outside the area by Santiago Sandoval was easily saved by Tijuana's goalkeeper, Jose Rodriguez. A back pass was badly fumbled by Rodriguez and left there for Ricardo Marin, who incredibly kicked the ball straight to Rodriguez in a terrible miss. Off a corner kick, the cross into the area was headed back by Luis Romo into the path of Santiago Sandoval, who headed the ball from close range past Rodriguez to score and give Chivas the early 1-0 lead. It was a deserved goal as Chivas had been the better team. Tijuana would try to answer back with a counter in which Ramiro Arciga got off a header that would be cleared off the line by Romo. Off another corner kick, the cross into the area was headed back by Diego Campillo into the path of Ricardo Marin, who headed the ball from close range past Rodriguez to score and increased the lead to 2-0. It was the same play that Tijuana failed to defend and from set pieces, Chivas had a two goal lead. A cross into the area was headed by Diego Abreu but his teammate, Ignacio Rivera would get in between the path of his shot and deflected it wide. After a thru pass would allow Hugo Camberos to get into the area, he would be brought down by Arciga and the referee would give a Penalty Kick to Chivas. Ricardo Marin took the PK and calmly placed his left footed shot past Rodriguez to score and increased Chivas' lead to 3-0. The halftime whistle blew and Chivas had a solid lead after having their best half played so far in the Apertura 2026.
The 2nd half started with Tijuana subbing out Pablo Ortiz, Diego Abreu and Ignacio Rivero for Alan Vega, Elias Manoel and Yael Padilla. Seconds after the start of the half, Chivas lost the ball and allowed Ivan Tona to get to the area but his left footed shot was blocked by Chivas' goalkeeper, Raul Rangel. Rafael Fernandez got off a right footed shot from outside the area that went wide. Chivas subbed out Efrain Alvarez and Miguel Gomez for Brian Gutierrez and Luis Rey. Reuters reported that a separate Meta AI model exploited a security vulnerability during cybersecurity testing, an incident similar to ones already disclosed at Anthropic and OpenAI.
Muse Code comes in two pricing tiers: one matches Meta Platforms, Inc. (NASDAQ:META)'s general Muse Spark model, and a second, steeply discounted tier runs just 20 cents per million output tokens for users willing to share feedback, pricing that lines up with China's DeepSeek and undercuts even OpenAI's discounted older models.
Meta AI chief Alexandr **** put it simply, saying the pricing can be an incredibly good option for a lot of workflows, especially from a cost perspective. The stakes here are real. Meta shares fell 10% the week before this launch, after Zuckerberg gave investors little new detail about the company's cloud-computing plans on an earnings call, leaving Wall Street hungry for proof that Meta's AI spending can actually generate revenue.
Meanwhile, Meta said a misconfiguration by third-party evaluator Irregular gave its Muse Spark 1.1 model unintended internet access during testing. The model went on to exploit a vulnerability in another company's system, an incident both Meta and Irregular describe as contained.
