The Arizona Cardinals shocked the Los Angeles Chargers in Week 1 with a 26-14 win in which Mike LaFleur became the franchise's first non-interim head coach to win their first game in charge. The matchup was projected as one of the opening week's most lopsided in favor of Jim Harbaugh and Los Angeles, who were coming off an 11-6 record in 2025. Los Angeles made the playoffs and lost to the eventual AFC champion New England Patriots in the Wild Card round, albeit without either of their starting offensive tackles—Rashawn Slater and Joe Alt—who were both expected to boost the offense upon their return this season. Arizona's defense had other ideas, and became one of the biggest surprises of any unit across Week 1's Sunday slate, while their offense simply looked more talented and outplayed LA with complementary football. That's what the Seahawks will be looking for in Week 2.
The Cardinals defense played with an energy that stifled Justin Herbert and new offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel, who only held the ball for 51 plays and 22:29. Arizona ran 21 more plays and had the ball for 15:02 more of the game (more than an entire quarter?!) When watching this game, the attitude from Arizona's defense seemed to disregard the stature of its opponent. LaFleur retained defensive coordinator Nick Rallis, who Phoenix-based sports radio host John Gambadoro credits for helping set the temperature.
It's easy to see Rallis' results. The intensity of the defense that showed up on tape is just as evident on paper. His Cardinals defense ranks second to last in blitz rate so far this season, yet they held McDaniel and Herbert to a measly 2-for-8 on third downs and 0-for-3 on fourth downs. Their front seven was far more formidable than the Chargers on the day, producing 17 pressures on 55 snaps while LA could only muster 12 on 75 opportunities. On the flipside, the Cardinals' offensive line has been projected as their downfall this season. The Seahawks have a clear opportunity to establish their presence as a physically dominant team if they kill the Cardinals momentum. This will be the game for elite run blockers like AJ Barner and run stoppers like Uchenna Nwosu to put the new age film community on watch.

Shane Lowry holds a four shot lead heading into the final round of the Irish Open on Sunday.
Lowry posted a fine round of 65 on Saturday at the Irish Open and is sitting at 16-under for the tournament, with Jacob Skov Olesen his nearest challenger on 12-under.
The 39-year-old Irishman will be desperate to win his national open for the second time in his career at Trump International Golf Links.

The Blue Ridge Mountains will serve as a backdrop for U.S. Presidents Cup players Justin Thomas, Jacob Bridgeman and Jackson Koivun, who will be tuning up their games ahead of Medinah after getting the nod from captain Brandt Snedeker earlier in the month.

The Virginia Cavaliers did not mess around on Friday night, taking care of Norfolk State, 59-3. As expected, the 'Hoos overmatched the Spartans for 60 minutes, allowing all sorts of reserves to get live reps in the second half.
Three different UVA quarterbacks threw touchdown passes. Beau Pribula, who played the first two quarters, was once again ultra efficient, throwing for 162 yards on 12-of-14 passing with three touchdowns. Of note, Pribula did not have a single designed rushing attempt; offensive coordinator Des Kitchings chose to keep him upright and allow him to sling the rock from the pocket instead.
Backups Eli Holstein and Cole Geer ultimately had limited passing attempts, but both had one impressive throw to build on. Holstein opened the second half with a beautiful goal line fade to Ty'Lyric Coleman in the back corner of the end zone, while Geer found high school teammate Williem Thurber on a tight window up the seam for 28 yards in the fourth.
At the skill positions, wide receiver Jacquon Gibson got himself on the board with two touchdown catches from Pribula, after failing to reach the end zone a single time with UMass in 2025. Meanwhile, sophomore Xay Davis showcased his burst out of the backfield, totaling 107 ticks on 13 attempts.
On the defensive end, Kam Robinson made his way back to the field (in a limited capacity), a welcomed sight for the Cavalier faithful. What is expected to be a strong Kernersville Middle School baseball team opened its season Tuesday afternoon with a 20-1 rout of Northwest Middle School at the Ivey M. Redmon Sports Complex. The game was called on the 10-run rule after three innings.

The Nats have been a chore to watch the last month and a half. We really saw that on display during an 0-6 west coast trip. Many of the games were close, but the Nats consistently found ways to lose. That is just what they have been doing lately. Hopefully that can change at home against the Angels.

"Well, yeah, because I know the guy, and I know the character of the guy, so I've said it many times," LaFleur told reporters. "And unfortunately, situations occur in life and it's just an unfortunate situation."
LaFleur then was asked about the rationale for keeping Jacobs on the roster, given his plea.

SEYMOUR - An inadvertent whistle by a game official with under two minutes played in the game sealed an incredibly unusual 6-0 victory for the Ansonia football team over Seymour Thursday night at DeBarber Field.
With Ansonia clinging to its marginal lead, Chargers running back Jacob Branch took a handoff, got stood up from a Seymour defender and then continued to churn away, getting stripped of the ball in the process.
The Seymour players began celebrating as Ronan Carboni scooped up the loose ball at the Ansonia 19-yard line. Then a little bit of confusion and chaos ensued.
The game officials huddled on the field and after significant discussion determined that the whistle had been blown when Branch was first stood up, because the official near the Ansonia sideline felt his forward progress had been halted.
The Chargers maintained possession of the ball, and ultimately ran out the clock to seal the victory.

De'Zhaun Stribling left the game early on, but shortly returned. When he did come back, Stribling was carted off the field. It was a non-contact injury in which Stribling couldn't put any pressure on his left leg. The 49ers immediately ruled him out, which is never a good sign.
Stribling played 21 snaps before he left with an injury. The 49ers relied on Jacob Cowing and Deebo Samuel in Stribling's absence. They'll likely use Demarcus Robinson more moving forward.

Texas Rangers star pitcher Jacob deGrom pitched well on Thursday against the Seattle Mariners. However, he was removed after throwing 92 pitches through six innings, a decision that Rangers manager Skip Schumaker later said was due to an injury concern, via Kennedi Landry of MLB.com.
"Skip Schumaker said that Jacob deGrom was dealing with groin tightness through much of his start today. That's what the mound visit was about in the sixth and that's also why he didn't come back out for the seventh," Landry reported.
deGrom was indeed terrific while on the mound despite battling groin tightness throughout the outing. The veteran right-hander struck out 12 Mariners through six innings while allowing no runs and only one hit. So often pitchers' duels don't really stand up to the hype, but today's matchup between two former Stetson Hatters – the Mariners' Logan Gilbert and the Rangers' Jacob deGrom – delivered on all that promise and then some. The two pitchers combined for 23 strikeouts, and deGrom carried a perfect game through five innings. In true pitching duel style, it looked like the pitcher who blinked first would come out on the short end, but despite Logan Gilbert making a couple of mistakes, his offense was able to pick him up and deliver him the win. Bragging rights are fun; wins are better. (Gilbert also gets the honor of leading MLB in whiffs today: 24 to deGrom's 20, despite having one fewer strikeout than deGrom.)
This all being said, it was a slog for the Mariners early on. The best at-bat the first time through the order for the Mariners went to – surprise, surprise – Cal Raleigh, who battled deGrom for nine pitches before striking out on deGrom's fastest fastball of the day, a 99.6 mph heater (my campaign for decimal points on the ribbon board in the stadium, which read 100, continues unabated). But the Mariners did fight deGrom, getting themselves into good counts and forcing him into the zone; he finished the second inning at 37 pitches, compared to Gilbert's 24.
But it only took two pitches to offset that work in the third. Nicky Lopez was able to take 96 up and in from Gilbert and find a hole on the infield, and one batter later, with two outs, Joc Pederson jumped a first-pitch slider for a two-run homer. It wasn't a terrible pitch from Gilbert, away from Pederson but probably still too much on the plate; Gilbert had struck Pederson out on the slider in his first at-bat. The slider was particularly nasty today, with an eye-popping 75% whiff rate. He led with the pitch, throwing it 40 times, 12 times to start off an at-bat, which feels like a different sequence than he's used. Gilbert credits Cal for coming up with a good game plan, especially after he felt like he fell into some predictable patterns in his last time out against the A's.
"Like with Joc, we got him with the slider early, so he probably thought we were going to it next time," explained Gilbert. "But then also other guys, we went heavy spin, like with Duran, and then next time went three or four straight fastballs. So I think we did a good job there. They're trying to look at how we're probably scouting them, and then next time through, maybe pitch them different. I think Cal did a good job there."
But deGrom was just as tough on the other side. After striking out eight times in the first three innings, the Mariners hitters decided to try a different strategy the second time through the order. That also didn't work, as they let deGrom cruise through the fourth on nine pitches, keeping his perfect game intact.

The San Francisco 49ers' first inactive list of the season is out. They'll lean into the veterans on the roster tonight, as every player on the inactive list is on a rookie contract:

The 49ers having only two running backs active suggests Deebo Samuel will play a pivotal role out of the backfield. Expect him to be an option still in the passing game, but it likely comes from the running back alignment. If anybody knows how to take on a heavier workload against the Rams, it's Deebo.
It's also a sign that the team is comfortable giving Kaelon black touches. Kyle Shanahan said this past offseason that he regrets not involving more running backs last season. It means you're taking Christian McCaffrey off the field, so it's understandable. Still, the goal is to keep McCaffrey fresh for the last stretch of the season.
With Watkins inactive, Mike Evans, De'Zhaun Stribling, Demarcus Robinson, Jacob Cowing, and KhaDarel Hodge are the wideouts. If Samuel's role is more underneath, we'll see whether that means Cowing has a role as the receiver who stretches the field for the offense.

However, it appears Thomas has gotten past that. He was limited in Thursday's practice, as were fellow rookies Caleb Tiernan (ankle) and Jacob Thomas (ankle), the undrafted free-agent safety out of James Madison.

It's been over a month since the trade deadline came and went and we're still getting information on a trade that never actually happened. The Atlanta Braves and Texas Rangers were very close to getting a deal done that would bring Jacob deGrom to Atlanta but until today, we didn't know who or what Atlanta would be sending in return. The deal got close enough to where it came down to deGrom making a decision with his no-trade clause and that's why he's still in Texas, so we know that the Braves had agreed to trade someone away.
It appears that one of the "who's" would've been Spencer Strider. Mark Feinsand of MLB.com wrote an article about players across baseball who could be on the move via trade in the offseason and one of the names that came up was Strider. Feinsand wasted no time in sharing the details from the trade that never was:
The Braves discussed sending Strider to Texas in a contract swap trade for Jacob deGrom before the Trade Deadline, and although deGrom blocked the deal with his no-trade clause, it's clear that Atlanta is open to moving its former ace.
Feinsand also noted that while the Braves are holding out hope that Strider could help out in the Postseason coming out of the bullpen, they are also keeping their options open and could be trying to find a suitor who believes that they can get Strider back to where he was before while taking some talent for their farm system as well.
Either way, it's definitely intriguing to see that this is where the Braves are at with Strider at this point. If you woke up from a coma in 2022 to learn that the Braves could be shopping Spencer Strider around, you might've figured that it was because his contract demands were too large since he had become such a dominant force on the mound. Instead, Strider has struggled with injuries and inconsistent performances when healthy and the outlook has changed significantly for Strider.
