Football is finally here. We are only a few days away from the Virginia Tech Hokies opening fall camp. We recently began our preview of fall camp with five offensive players to know. Now, we'll do the same for the defensive side of the ball.
The 6-foot-3, 245-pound edge rusher was an elite recruit out of Cocoa, Florida, only one year ago. He signed with Missouri, appearing in three games before choosing to redshirt. However, he entered the transfer portal and quickly became an in-demand player. Hilson chose the Hokies. He is one of several new edge rushers on this season's roster. Hilson, Mylachi Williams and Samuel Okunlola have the best chance to make an impact this fall.
Hilson's combination of size, length and speed gives him the highest upside of the group. He has the potential to make the same type of impact as Antwaun Powell-Ryland did a few years back. That's not saying Hilson will reach 16 sacks or more, but the potential is there. He can easily be a double-digit sack guy this fall.
We are double dipping at defensive end here. When head coach James Franklin was asked to name one player on each side of the ball who stood out this spring, he named Stevens. At 6-foot-5, 260 pounds, Stevens has excellent size. After redshirting his freshman season, he's appeared in all 25 games over the last two seasons. Now, it's time for him to enter the starting lineup and never look back. Stevens will win at the point of attack with brute strength. It will be fun to watch him take the next step in his career.
The 6-foot-1, 228-pound sophomore didn't play over the first few games last season. Once he entered the lineup on Sept. 27 against N.C. State, he never looked back. Chambers had six tackles and one sack in that surprise road win over the Wolfpack. He kept getting better throughout the remainder of the season and became a priority to retain. Now, the Hokies have their middle linebacker, and he still has plenty of room to grow. His former head coach, Brent Pry, is now his defensive coordinator and position coach.

PULLMAN — When September rolls around and Washington State players take the field at Husky Stadium to take on rival Washington, and when the Cougars' defense rolls out, good luck recognizing any of the players in the visitors' secondary.
That's because among the 32 transfers WSU landed over the offseason, several of them play cornerback, a position at which the Cougs desperately needed to restock. Head coach Kirby Moore and staff did well to do so, likely using connections like new safeties coach Greg Burns and cornerbacks coach Brandyn Thompson to land a couple players.
But who are the new guys in this position group? And how might they fare this fall?

A sanctioned tanker loaded with crude is leaving a growing trail of oil in protected waters off the coast of Oman, according to newly reviewed satellite images, as experts warn the stranded vessel could break apart during the region's rough monsoon season.
Satellite images reviewed by The ****** ociated Press show an oil sheen covering roughly 20 square kilometers, or about 8 square miles, around Dhofar's Qibliyah Island, part of Oman's protected Hallaniyat Islands. Dark patches of crude have also reached the shoreline. Experts say the leak has worsened in recent days, fueling fears that rough weather could trigger a much larger spill.
"The last few days, the imagery indicates an increase in oil coming out, as the size of the sheen is growing," Wim Zwijnenburg, an environmental expert with the Dutch peace organization PAX, told the AP.

The Big Ten and all other college sports conferences are tackling the topic of jersey patches in football and other sports. College Sports Wire picked up some of the latest details on this issue:
"Illinois and Ohio State were two schools that jumped into lucrative deals, and Big Ten Commissioner Tony Petitti was asked about the conference's stance on allowing individual programs to agree to such arrangements.
"'Does it make sense to allow the institutions to do it themselves? Are there certain sports you want to hold back? Should we have a conference policy?', Petitti said at Big Ten Media Days, alluding to the thoughts the conferences had when they anticipated these deals coming down. 'Our ****** ysis and the work we did with our members led to the decision that the conference should review those decisions at an institution-based level. That's where we are. It doesn't mean around championships you might do something different with an additional patch, but the core thing, we think it was best left up to the strength of our institutions, let them do the deals that they need to do and kind of go from there.'"
We saw the Big 12 negotiate a sponsorship deal which included a company logo on jersey patches but had other components as well. That deal, however, did not prevent Big 12 member schools from negotiating their own separate deals. It seems the Big Ten is not in a fundamentally different place. It will be fascinating to see how this issue evolves in the coming years.

SAN FRANCISCO, Aug 1 (Reuters) - Capital One Financial hit back on Friday against a lawsuit over its decision to close the Trump Organization's bank accounts years ago, stating that it did so after a review by anti-money laundering experts.
The disclosure marks the first time a bank has formally tied money laundering concerns to U.S. President Donald Trump's family business. Capital One is seeking to dismiss the case by casting doubt on claims of illegally debanking — or denying services on religious or political grounds — the Trump Organization.
The Trump Organization and Capital One did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
Capital One has never accused the Trump Organization of illegal money laundering. But Friday's filing argues that "documents and Plaintiffs' own allegations make clear that Capital One closed Plaintiffs' accounts for anti-money laundering ("AML") reasons. The closures were the result of months of analysis and a careful review by Capital One's AML team in accordance with bank policies and regulatory guidance."

A troublesome reality is staring down Pittsburgh Steelers running back Jaylen Warren, who is seemingly primed for a smaller role in 2026.
Per Chris Adamski of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, Rico Dowdle has emerged as the RB1 early in training camp, which isn't exactly great news for Warren heading into Year 5.
"Now 4 practices into camp, a couple of offensive depth chart declarations seem clear: Rico Dowdle is RB1 over Jaylen Warren, Roman Wilson is WR3 (well ahead of Germie Bernard)," Adamski wrote via X.
Warren spent the first three seasons of his career behind Najee Harris as a solid RB2 before emerging as the starting running back in 2025. Over the past four seasons, Warren has recorded 3,859 yards from scrimmage and 14 total touchdowns, including an impressive career average of 5.3 yards per touch.
Dowdle, who previously spent time with new Steelers head coach Mike McCarthy on the Dallas Cowboys, is on the verge of history heading into 2026, as he could become the first running back to record three consecutive 1,000-yard seasons with three different teams.

ZANESVILLE – Efforts to bring the Gus Macker basketball tournament back to Zanesville took a major step forward with the selection of a host site at Ohio University Zanesville/Zane State College and the YMCA of Zanesville, as community partners, sponsors and organizers work toward the event's return in July 2027.
Next, the Gus Macker executive committee will have a 30- to 40-minute site walkthrough in August with facility, campus and concession representatives to review the venue layouts and complete the proposed site plan. That'll include mapping out the areas for the hoops, parking, overflow, and food vendors, added Dominique Proctor, the Gus Macker Zanesville committee's executive chair.
Then, the committee can start working on a final contract with the tournament's headquarters. Discussions are expected to start after Labor Day.

It is Day 43 of our 100-day countdown to kickoff. We are looking back at the 100 most iconic games in Dallas Cowboys history. The countdown will leads us right up to the opening game of 2026. Our look back doesn't depend on just one criteria for our rankings. We take into consideration things like how big the game was for the organization, how memorable the game was, games that had unusual events take place, games that are a part of NFL lore, Cowboys firsts, and games where the Cowboys just plain dominated. Variety is the spice of life and we have all different kind of Cowboys games to review. At the bottom, we'll link each day of the countdown so you can go back and check out any you missed.

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (AP) — Chiefs wide receivers Xavier Worthy and Cyrus Allen left training camp with injuries on Saturday, depleting a position group that was disappointing last season and that Kansas City needs to be significantly improved this season.
The Chiefs said after the workout that Worthy had left early because of a shoulder injury. The third-year pro missed time last season with another shoulder injury he sustained when he collided with tight end Travis Kelce in the season opener against the Chargers.
Worthy returned to play in 13 more games and catch 42 passes for 532 yards and a touchdown.
Allen, a fifth-round draft pick, had turned heads early in camp and drawn rave reviews from the coaching staff. He collided with Kaiir Elam during a special teams drill and remained on the turf until a cart came and took him from the practice field.

Successfully stopping Gianni Infantino's FIFA plan to sell World Cup profits to private investors was the first half of a high-stakes game in global soccer politics.

Genoa v AC Milan, the final away game of the season. At Marassi, home to the Luigi Ferraris Stadium (named after a former Genoa player), the Rossoneri head into the end of their campaign aiming for a win against the Rossoblù. Recent encounters have proved favourable for us, with a record of six wins from the last seven trips to Genoa. One of the most memorable was on 7 October 2023, when the Rossoneri won thanks to a goal from Pulisic, before a dramatic finale that saw Olivier Giroud step in as goalkeeper.
In front of around 33,000 spectators, Pioli's Rossoneri went into action just days after a goalless away game in Dortmund against BVB. In the league, they had shown promising form, and they were on their way to a fourth straight win and a seventh victory from their first eight matches. There were several changes to the Rossoneri lineup, with the attacking trio Chukwueze, Jović, and Okafor starting. The match was close and hard-fought, with Gilardino's Genoa defending well and posing a serious attacking threat. The chances came in the final 30 minutes. Leão's header hit the crossbar, and Maignan produced a spectacular save to deny a deflected left-footed effort from Drăgușin. The final minutes turned into a frantic end to the match with everything still possible. In the 87th minute, Pulisic found a cross sent in by Musah and sent it to the back of the net to give the Rossoneri the lead. The goal was given after a VAR review by referee Piccinini.

MINNEAPOLIS, MN —The WWE's 'Biggest Party of the Summer' is now less than 24 hours away, as SummerSlam 2026 will take place Saturday and Sunday live from U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
SummerSlam has something to offer for every WWE fan. From the two dream matches, one of which will be the main event each night, to the matches with crazy stipulations to some longtime feuds coming to a potential end.
As a way to preview the second biggest PLE of the year, I have put together a list of the five matches I am most excited for.
5. Gunther vs. Nick Aldis
WWE has been teasing SmackDown GM Nick Aldis' in-ring return for some time now after his mini-feuds with Drew McIntyre and Randy Orton, and are now finally cashing in, giving Aldis a tall task against the 'Ring General' Gunther. I am excited for this match for one main reason. Nick Aldis has been a professional wrestler for over 20 years. He started in the UK, before moving over to TNA and NWA where he held world championships in both. He has flourished in his GM role, but seeing him back in the ring, and for many fans seeing him in the ring for the first time, will do much more for him than continuing as GM would. For one, the WWE is putting him back in the ring at SummerSlam, which tells me they trust him. Also, having him feud with Gunther, in a rivalry that has been very entertaining, especially seeing Aldis absolutely lose it and be 'forced' to get back in the ring, gives him breathing room. Even if he loses the match, which he should and probably will because Gunther needs this win, he can certainly 'win' the WWE Universe over by putting up a stellar and exciting performance. I can't wait to see how Aldis does.

Just two days after the start of fall camp, one of New Mexico State's key ***** istants is no longer with the program.
NMSU ***** istant head coach, general manager and running backs coach David Cobb was fired after a university review, a program spokesperson told the Journal on Friday.
Cobb, 33, had served in a variety of roles on NMSU's staff since 2023. Considered one of the Aggies' most valuable staffers, he was promoted to ***** istant head coach and general manager in January 2025.
It is unclear why the university fired Cobb.
"Before the start of football camp, David Cobb was placed on administrative leave," an NMSU spokesman said in a statement to the Journal. "Following the university's review process, coach Cobb was separated from the program and the university.

Some six months after redshirting his true freshman year at Washington State, Hung looked sharp in the middle of the Cougars defense, using his physicality and speed to shine at linebacker. He was quick to identify lanes, quicker to deliver hits. He looked ready to earn a meaningful role.
Which brings us to WSU's fall camp, which begins Thursday. The Cougars have solid top -three options at linebacker: transfers Nylan Brown and DJ Warne plus veteran Keith Brown, who missed last season with an injury. But examine the rest of their linebacker corps and you might wonder about the team's depth at that position.

The SEC generally, and Georgia's schedule specifically is absolutely full of elite players. Along with the other preview series we're running here at Dawg Sports as fall practice looms, I thought it would be instructive to look at the ten best players the Red and Black will see this season. We begin with a Vandy defensive back who's going to have a lot on his shoulders this year.
Martel Hight, CB, Vanderbilt (vs. Vanderbilt, Oct. 3)
With Diego Pavia gone to the NFL, Vanderbilt's defense becomes the more proven side of the ball, and Hight is its anchor. In 2025 he led the SEC in interceptions among defensive players, finishing with four picks and 35 tackles despite Vanderbilt not placing any defenders on the All-SEC teams.
Hight has been a steady piece of the Vanderbilt secondary since his true freshman year, when he played in all 12 games and accounted for 38 tackles and an interception. As a sophomore he added 33 tackles, two interceptions, four passes defended, and a forced fumble, while also handling return duties. He was chosen to represent the program at SEC Media Days entering his senior season, a sign of the trust the staff has in his leadership as the Commodores transition to a new quarterback.
In 2025 the Commodore staff gave Hight a look at receiver, where he'd been a standout in high school. The move made sense with Diego Pavia at QB but question marks surrounding Vandy's receiving corps. Getting Hight, among the best athletes on the roster, more snaps to be explosiive made sense on paper.
On the field it was less of a winner. Hight was targeted just 11 times out of 55 offensive snaps, catching just 7 ***** and accounting for just 64 yards and no touchdowns. July 30 (Reuters) - Britain's IG Group said on Thursday it has agreed to acquire U.S. daily fantasy sports and prediction markets operator Underdog for up to $1.3 billion, deepening its push into the fast-growing U.S. retail trading market.
The deal includes an upfront consideration based on an enterprise value of about $1.1 billion and an earnout of about $200 million for Underdog shareholders, IG said.

July 30 (Reuters) – Military veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder who got no relief from conventional treatments went into remission following treatment with the psychedelic drug psilocybin in a small U.S. pilot study, researchers say.
In the United States, psilocybin and almost all other psychedelic drugs are controlled substances in the same class as heroin or ecstasy, meaning they are deemed to have no medical use and high risk for abuse.
In April, President Donald Trump signed an executive order directing health regulators to speed reviews of psychedelic treatments and increase federal funding for research into their use.
The current early-stage study – the first to formally test the treatment in veterans with PTSD – adds to earlier evidence suggesting a benefit from psilocybin, the active ingredient in magic mushrooms, said study leader Alan Davis of The Ohio State University College of Social Work.

CEO Jim Vena said the tour east of the Mississippi wouldn't have been possible without one thing: the railroad operating firm's pending merger with Norfolk Southern, since Union Pacific's own tracks run west of the river. In part, the nostalgia tour is a goodwill campaign for the biggest deal in the company's history.
On the business itself, Union Pacific Corporation (NYSE:UNP) reported a strong quarter. Revenue rose 12% to $6.86 billion, beating the $6.71 billion expected, and adjusted earnings came in at $3.41 a share versus $3.24 expected. The company raised its full-year guidance to high-single-digit earnings growth, up from mid-single digits. The stock rose about 2% in premarket trading. Costs rose too; operating expenses climbed 13% to $4.1 billion, mostly from a 63% jump in fuel costs linked to the Iran war.
Union Pacific Corporation (NYSE:UNP) is trying to buy Norfolk Southern in a deal now valued around $71.5 billion, down from an earlier $85 billion price tag as terms have moved with Union Pacific's stock. It would create the first coast-to-coast U.S. railroad. The day before earnings, Union Pacific settled with Canadian National Railway, a major opponent that had been pushing regulators to demand more information. CN will drop its opposition in exchange for expanded Midwest access and a stake in two jointly owned terminal railroads. The companies still expect to close the deal in the first half of 2027.
That raises a real question. Is this merger clearing its last real hurdles, or did the CN settlement just remove one opponent out of several?
The core business (Union Pacific's actual railroad operations) is performing well on its own, guidance beat and rose, and pricing power held up despite surging fuel costs. The CN settlement removes a credible opponent and comes with political tailwinds too: Trump has publicly backed the merger and replaced a regulator who could have opposed it. Union Pacific Corporation (NYSE:UNP) and Norfolk Southern say the deal would save shippers $3.5 billion a year and remove 2.1 million trucks from the road. Wall Street responded fast: Baird, RBC, and JPMorgan all raised price targets this week, with RBC citing the CN deal directly as strengthening the merger's case.

CHICAGO (AP) — A former Illinois sheriff's deputy won't get an early medical release from his two-decade prison sentence for killing Sonya Massey inside her home after the Black woman called 911 about a possible prowler, state officials decided Friday.
Sean Grayson had been diagnosed with colon cancer prior to the 2024 shooting, and his attorney noted in January that the cancer had advanced to his liver and lungs.
The three-member Illinois Prisoner Review Board voted unanimously Friday to deny Grayson's application for early medical release, Liz Mitchell, a board spokesperson, said in an email.
Grayson, who is white, was convicted in October of second-degree murder for Massey's killing, a case that sparked protests over systemic racism and a U.S. Department of Justice review.
Body camera footage showed Grayson and another deputy enter Massey's home in Springfield, Illinois. Minutes later, Grayson shot the 36-year-old single mother in the face as she moved a pot of hot water from the stove and told him, "I rebuke you in the name of Jesus."

Howard Stern has secured the dismissal of a lawsuit brought by his former executive ***** istant, Leslie Kuhn, after a New York judge rejected her attempt to invalidate a 2025 nondisclosure agreement.
Kuhn alleged that Stern's production company, One Twelve, may have accessed her work email and electronically signed the agreement without her authorization.
The court found that theory unsupported, pointing to an email sent from Kuhn's account with the message "Signed NDA attached" and a copy of the agreement bearing her electronic signature.
Kuhn argued that she had not signed the May 2025 NDA and suggested that someone connected to One Twelve could have used remote access to create the email trail.
The judge characterized that allegation as a "bald ***** ertion," according to the decision obtained by TMZ and court documents reviewed by Page Six. The ruling concluded that Kuhn had not supplied sufficient facts to overcome the defendants' documentary evidence, which included the email from her account and the attached NDA.
