Minnesota Vikings OT Christian Darrisaw (non-injury) did not practice Friday, Sept. 11, but is not listed on the Week 1 injury report. S Harrison Smith (non-injury) was a limited participant and does not carry an injury designation. S Jakobe Thomas (illness), S Jacob Thomas (ankle) and OT Caleb Tiernan (ankle) fully participated and have been removed from the injury report.

When Virginia Tech hired James Franklin as the new head football coach in November, he immediately went to work. One of Franklin's top priorities was to improve the offensive line. The unit hasn't been a strength since Christian Darrisaw last played for the Hokies back in 2020.
Since that time, the Hokies have struggled to build and retain a strong offensive line in the NIL era. Franklin chose to retain offensive line coach Matt Moore, which was a popular move among players and recruits. Moore was initially hired ahead of the 2025 season by former head coach — and current defensive coordinator — Brent Pry.
Franklin was aggressive in the 2026 recruiting class, signing seven offensive linemen and adding four more via the NCAA transfer portal. The Hokies have several key linemen returning in 2026, but were already dealt a blow when senior offensive tackle Johnny Garrett was injured in practice. Garrett has played in 35 career games for the Hokies.

The New York Giants hosted the Minnesota Vikings in their first preseason game of 2026 on Saturday.
The Giants didn't come away with a win, losing 13-10, but head coach John Harbaugh got a good look at some of the players he's been evaluating over the summer in a real-game situation. There were solid plays and areas of opportunity, but it's just the first preseason game, so no one expected perfection.
One of the brighter spots during the game was seeing how rookie linebacker Arvell Reese performed in his first NFL game setting. Reese was on the field for 12 defensive snaps and four special teams snaps in the preseason game, and watching his highlights should have Giants fans paying attention.
NFL ****** yst Brian Baldinger broke down Reese's play.
"Let's just put the periscope on Arvell Reese here," Baldinger says. "He played 12 snaps in his debut against the Vikings, and what are the Giants going to do? They're going to shift to the strong side, two tight ends over here. So they're gonna overload to match it up. So where do you think the Vikings are going to come? They're going to come to the weak side, behind (Christian) Darrisaw at left tackle, right. What's Arvell Reese gonna do? You know what you do? You just step up and blow it up. Just step up and blow it up. It's beautiful.

But what about the losers? The Vikings, through their actions, caused some of those, too. Counted down to the biggest loser of the 2026 offseason, here’s the pecking order.
Rouse’s path to making the team is actually straightforward.
If the Vikings view him as a guard, he has a much clearer shot at securing a roster spot. If they still see him as a tackle, however, his prospects become challenging. Christian Darrisaw and Brian O’Neill are entrenched starters. Ryan Van Demark was acquired for veteran depth in March, and Caleb Tiernan joined the team in Round 3 of April’s draft. None of these players suggests a need for a “fourth tackle.”
That places Rouse in a difficult position.

One underrated reason the Minnesota Vikings' offense struggled so much in 2025 was because of Christian Darrisaw's health. The left tackle never seemed fully recovered from his ACL/MCL tear in 2024, playing only 10 games while his week-to-week availability was always in question.
It appeared that he was much more comfortable over the past month in OTAs and minicamp, providing optimism that the injury is behind him. Now, the expectation is that he will return to his pre-injury form and live up to the lucrative contract he signed prior to the 2024 season.
Zachary Pereles of CBS Sports listed Darrisaw as his breakout candidate for the Vikings, believing that a full recovery can help him finally live up to his potential.

He's an absolute road grader in the run game; since Darrisaw arrived in 2021, the Vikings have a 46% rushing success rate with him on the field and a 41% rushing success rate without him. In 2025, that would have been the difference between the NFL's 17th-best rushing attack and its 31st-best rushing attack.
Minnesota appears poised to lean into its running game more this year as well, making it paramount that Darrisaw is back to normal. If he can stay healthy, the Vikings are ready for him to show the league he's one of the best left tackles in the NFL.
