Fans question NFL's roughing-the-passer rules after controversial calls against Packers, Chiefs originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
Roughing-the-passer has always proved to be a sore subject for NFL fans. That fact resurfaced once more in Week 6.
Some might consider the penalty, ushered in to protect passers from sustaining major injuries, as a godsend. Others view it more negatively, believing it should be reformed to prevent honest defenders from coming under its wretched glare.
Regardless of where you stand on the debate, it's clear that many don't believe slight contact should come under its purview. Someone appeared to inform some of the NFL's referees, however.
Here's what you need to know.

Former India cricketer Madan Lal reacted after the Indian women's cricket team did not accept the Asia Cup trophy from Asian Cricket Council (ACC) chairman Mohsin Naqvi after winning the ***** le on Sunday.

Harmanpreet Kaur-led India defeated Sri Lanka by 72 runs to win a record-extending eighth Women's Asia Cup ***** le. However, the Indian players did not come out for the post-match presentation ceremony.
Madan, a member of India's 1983 World Cup-winning team, questioned the decision and said India should avoid playing Pakistan if such situations continue.

"Once again same old story. If we are going to behave like this then we should not play Pakistan any trophies. I know its Board decision," Madan said.

The Asia Cup trophy controversy has continued for the second year in a row.
The Indian women's team did not return to the field for the trophy presentation after their ***** le win.

India's decision came a year after the men's team also refused to receive the Asia Cup trophy and medals from Naqvi.

Naqvi is the ACC chairman and also heads the Pakistan Cricket Board. He is also the Interior Minister of Pakistan.
The Indian men's team had won the Asia Cup last year but did not accept the trophy from Naqvi.

India are yet to receive the trophy, which has since been kept at the ACC office.

The Suryakumar Yadav-led Indian team instead celebrated on the presentation dais without the physical trophy.
Unlike the Indian team, the Sri Lankan players accepted their runners-up cheque from Naqvi. Before that, all the Sri Lankan players and support staff received medals from Sri Lanka Cricket interim chief Eran Wikramaratne.

Naqvi left the stadium immediately after presenting the award to Sri Lankan captain Chamari Athapaththu.

Shane Lowry holds a four shot lead heading into the final round of the Irish Open on Sunday.
Lowry posted a fine round of 65 on Saturday at the Irish Open and is sitting at 16-under for the tournament, with Jacob Skov Olesen his nearest challenger on 12-under.
The 39-year-old Irishman will be desperate to win his national open for the second time in his career at Trump International Golf Links.
Shane Lowry is certainly in the kind of form required to do exactly that at the Irish Open on Sunday.

The Buffalo Bills will open the 2026 NFL season in a place where they have struggled to find success in recent years: on the road against the Houston Texans, who boast one of the league's stingiest defenses.
Since coming to the Bills as the No. 7 overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft, Josh Allen has led the Bills into Houston four times. And in all four prior matchups, the Bills couldn't pull out the win.
Sunday will mark the third consecutive season where Buffalo has traveled to Houston, and today's edition of Buffalo Rumblinks leads off by sharing the key matchups to watch and positional ***** ysis as the Bills look to snap that streak and begin the season with a big road win over a fellow playoff participant from last season.
Check out the ***** sments below and then let us know your thoughts on the game in the comments section.

Andoni Iraola has sent a message to Liverpool across his first few games in charge. It's puts the Reds in a difficult position.
We've now seen what Andoni Iraola is about over his first four matches in charge of Liverpool. The Spaniard has tried to develop the team quickly, hoping to get them pressing higher and playing with more energy than last season.
That was very apparent in the wins over Ipswich Town and Atlético Madrid. The latter was a particularly impressive win in the UEFA Champions League and it was the Reds' high press that made it happen.
What Iraola needs, then, is to get a hold of the right players for the right roles. That includes figuring who in this current bunch are capable of delivering what he needs.
And one decision he appears to have made on that puts Liverpool in a very tricky position.

Corey Day's rapid climb through NASCAR isn't slowing down.
Hendrick Motorsports announced Wednesday that it has signed Day to a long-term contract extension, keeping one of the sport's most closely watched young drivers in the organization for years to come. And Hendrick isn't simply bringing him back for another season in NASCAR's O'Reilly Auto Parts Series.
Day is officially headed to the Cup Series.
The 20-year-old will return to Hendrick's No. 17 Chevrolet for a second full O'Reilly Series season in 2027 while also making his Cup debut with a limited schedule. Hendrick has not yet announced which Cup races Day will run or provided additional details about that program.
It's another major step for a driver who was still learning how to race stock cars on pavement just two years ago.

Plymouth Argyle attacker Caleb Watts should be aiming for at least 10 goals this season, according to boss Tom Cleverley.
The 24-year-old is returning from injury and scored for the first time this season in the 3-2 win at Doncaster Rovers on Saturday.
Watts, who moved to Argyle from Devon rivals Exeter City last summer, scored seven times in 33 appearances last season.
"He's intense, he's aggressive, and he showed good game understanding and real good quality in the final action," Cleverley told BBC Radio Devon of the forward-thinking midfielder.
"His numbers are off the chart for an attacking midfielder, to be honest," he added.

The Alabama Crimson Tide have lost a commitment in their 2028 recruiting class. Three-star linebacker Ryquan Butler decommitted on Sunday, according to a report from Brendan Sonnone of 247Sports.
Butler is from Loachapoka, Alabama, and committed to Alabama on July 7. He picked the Crimson Tide over the FSU Seminoles, Ole Miss Rebels, Auburn Tigers, and several other programs.
He is ranked as the No. 521 overall player and No. 34 linebacker in the 247Sports composite. The 6-foot-3, 205-pounder is also the No. 19 player from Alabama.
While the loss stings, Alabama's 2028 recruiting class is still in a great place. They still have the top 2028 recruiting class in the country with six commitments overall, including three-star linebacker Dustin Henry. Four-star quarterback Kingston Preyear, the No. 44 player in the country, is their highest-ranked commit and the leader of the group.
Butler was enjoying an excellent start to his junior season before he decided to reopen his recruitment. In two games, he recorded 27 tackles, 6.0 tackles for loss, three quarterback hurries, and two forced fumbles for Loachapoka High School. He also plays on offense, carrying the ball 11 times for 92 yards and four touchdowns.

Forest Green Rovers winger Joshua Osude is set to miss more than two months after falling while getting out of the shower and partially rupturing his anterior cruciate ligament.
The 27-year-old has featured in all five National League matches so far this season for Robbie Savage's side, scoring a goal in the 2-1 win at Worthing.
"He came in on Tuesday morning because we were in for a debrief, warm-down and recovery and Josh, who has been a shining light for us this season, said 'I've got out the shower, slipped, knee swollen up' and he's got a partial rupture of his ACL," Savage told BBC Radio Gloucestershire.
"Not good news - he's going to be out for eight to 12 weeks."

New York Knicks star Jalen Brunson has one of the most interesting situations in the NBA. He is the only active player to play for a team that also employs his father as a coach. Former player Rick Brunson has been an ****** istant coach for the Knicks since 2022 and has had the pleasure of coaching his son. They are the only active father-son player-coach duo in the league.
On the latest episode of the "Road Trippin' Show," Brunson explained the interesting dynamic he has with his father. According to the 2026 Finals MVP, their energy towards each other changes during games.
"When I'm on the court, me and my dad have this rule, if we get spats like we did in Atlanta, it's not father-son, it's player-coach," Brunson said. "And sometimes — you know how players are, we curse. We cuss out. We say things. That's my time."

The Hoops have been searching for reinforcements on both sides of defence, with cover for Kieran Tierney at left-back among the priorities while Alistair Johnston's injury has also highlighted the need for another option on the right.
Chelsea youngster Landon Emenalo had appeared to be Celtic's leading left-back target, but that proposed move has gone quiet in recent days.
However, Sky Sports reporter Anthony Joseph now reports that Celtic have agreed a permanent deal with Feyenoord for Lotomba.
The 27-year-old has been given permission to travel to Glasgow to undergo a medical and complete the formalities of his move to Parkhead.
Lotomba's versatility could prove particularly valuable to O'Neill, with the Switzerland international capable of operating at both right-back and left-back.

CLEMSON, S.C. (AP) — Clemson coach Dabo Swinney said Christopher Vizzina will start at quarterback against No. 11 LSU in Saturday night's season opener.
Vizzina's job security beyond Week 1 is uncertain, and will largely depend on how he performs on the road in what is considered a tough environment.
Swinney is also high on true freshman quarterback Tait Reynolds, a two-sport star who played at Queen Creek High in Arizona.
While Swinney said Vizzina has "earned the job" with his consistency in practice, he's not ready to anoint him the starter for the regular season or "give him a lifetime contract."
"He's got to go win some games, and play well," Swinney said Tuesday.

NEW YORK — Alex Eala has been filling tennis stadiums all over the world this past year, buoyed by more than 11 million overseas Filipinos. Packed crowds in Australia, Dubai, Toronto, and this week, New York, have felt "Eala Mania," decorating relatively docile tennis crowds with Philippine flags and "Laban Alex!" signs.
Eala is a complete anomaly for her country. No other Filipina had even made the top 250 before her, and she's already cracked the top 20 before the year's final major following her maiden WTA ***** le at the DC Open earlier this month. The 21-year-old even has current stars already labeling her the future of the sport.
Her unprecedented ascent has led Filipino fans to fly across the country to see her play. One group even planned their college reunion around her first appearance at the Cincinnati Open a few weeks ago.
But because of the nomadic nature of tennis, Eala is barely able to witness how she's impacting the other 117 million Filipinos in her home country.
"I think because I'm always traveling and I'm on tour, I'm quite out of touch sometimes with what my impact is back home, for the good and the bad. I think that's why I said a couple of times that when I went back home, it really opened my eyes," Eala said in response to a question from FOS at the Cincinnati Open.

Serena Williams walked back onto Arthur Ashe Stadium 1,453 days after what had looked like her final US Open match. Carlos Alcaraz followed her through the tunnel carrying a comeback story of his own.
More than 10,000 people were already inside on August 25 when Williams and Alcaraz emerged in matching purple-and-black Nike kits for the US Open Mixed Doubles Championship. The public-address announcer worked through Williams' accomplishments as the applause continued building, according to The Guardian.
Then Alcaraz double-faulted on the first point. The defending US Open men's champion had not played a competitive match since suffering a right wrist injury in April and later admitted he was "really, really nervous." Williams, meanwhile, was competing at Flushing Meadows for the first time since her emotional 2022 farewell.
Their partnership produced both sides of a comeback in a matter of hours. Williams and Alcaraz beat Erin Routliffe and Lloyd Glasspool 5-3, 4-1, then returned to Ashe and lost 5-4(4), 4-1 to Belinda Bencic and Flavio Cobolli in the quarterfinals.
The first match initially looked as though Alcaraz's five-month layoff might be difficult to disguise. He opened with a double fault, was broken early and joined Williams in falling behind 1-3 before the match changed direction.

This week's episode of 'Hard Knocks' was the most revealing and simultaneously the most gut-wrenching to watch for Seattle Seahawks fans.
The season-ending injuries to Bud Clark and Jake Bobo were both shown on the broadcast, punctuating preceding segments in which we got to see Clark with his fiancee and their young son, as well as Bobo and his heart-to-heart with receivers coach Frisman Jackson.
Clark, who broke his ankle on the Seahawks' first defensive play against the Tennessee ******* ans, immediately screamed out, "My sh-t just broke!" after an audible snap could be heard as he planted his right ankle. Incredibly, through the intense pain after suffering an injury that would leave him sidelined for months, Clark kept a remarkably positive attitude as he made his way onto the cart.
"Yeah, we gravy, we gravy," Clark told the athletic trainers.
Clark later said to Coach Mike Macdonald, "Hell yeah, coach, we gravy. It hurts like a motherf—ker, though."

The future of Nico Gonzalez at Manchester City became painstakingly clear on Sunday. Marc Guehi started in midfield and the Spanish midfielder was an unused substitute in City's 2-1 win over Bournemouth. The fact that Guehi was preferred in midfield to Nico Gonzalez said all you needed to know about where he stands in Enzo Maresca's squad. It has been reported that Nico Gonzalez is set to sign for Newcastle United. That move may not be popular, but it may be for the best for Nico and Manchester City.
Nico Gonzalez is set to complete a permanent move to Newcastle United. Fabrizio Romano reports that Manchester City and Newcastle have agreed on a £50 million package that will see the Spanish midfielder depart the FA Cup and Carabao Cup holders. It is reported that Newcastle will pay £47 million plus £3 million in add-ons. Romano also reports that Nico will be a key player for Newcastle as they bid to replace Bruno Guimarães and Sandro Tonali.
During his time at Manchester City, Nico Gonzalez didn't really put a foot wrong. He was signed during the January 2025 transfer window when Pep Guardiola's squad was in desperate need of midfield reinforcement. He showed glimpses during the back end of that season that he could grow and become a consistent contributor for Pep Guardiola's side. He did play really well in the Rodri role during the first half of last season. However, when Rodri returned from injury, Nico's opportunities to play dried up.
During the closing stages of last season, Nico Gonzalez was left out of Manchester City's matchday squad altogether. It was thought that with Enzo Maresca coming in the equation could change for Nico. But it has not. Instead, he is on the verge of signing for Newcastle. Also, if Nico had come on as expected, perhaps Manchester City would not have been so eager to sign Ayyoub Bouaddi from Lille.
In the end, perhaps it is the right move for Manchester City to sell Nico Gonzalez to Newcastle. The Spanish midfielder should be an important player for them and he will get the opportunity to play regularly which wasn't going to arrive at City. That is probably the best move for all concerned despite it being an unpopular move.

The match – Even away from home, the Sereias da Vila started the match setting the tempo in midfield. In less than ten minutes, Peixe threatened twice through Vivian.
The dominance continued and, in the 20th minute, Evelin Bonifácio received the ball on the left and crossed to Ketlen's head. The top scorer in Santos FC history headed firmly into the left corner, giving goalkeeper Ingrid no chance and opening the scoring at Barradão. It was the forward's 210th goal for the club.

NEW YORK (AP) — Vladimir Guerrero Jr. passed his final concussion tests and the Toronto Blue Jays slugger is expected to return from the seven-day injured list on Saturday.
Guerrero returned to the team on Friday and took swings in the batting cage after doubling during a minor league rehabilitation game for Single-A Dunedin on Thursday.
"He felt good," manager John Schneider said before the Blue Jays opened a three-game series with the Yankees. "Even before he left to play in Clearwater, he was feeling good. He feels pretty normal, so that's a good thing."
Guerrero left a 3-1 win in Toronto over the Yankees last Friday after a collision with New York rookie shortstop George Lombard Jr. on a bizarre play at third base in the sixth inning.
The six-time All-Star was injured when he slid at third base and had Lombard's knee and thigh strike his head. The play caused Guerrero's helmet to get dislodged, though the first baseman scored the tying run before exiting.

The Georgia Bulldogs have an SEC-best (tied with the Texas Longhorns) 11 players on the coaches All-SEC team. Georgia has one less player on the coaches All-SEC team than the media's All-SEC team.
Georgia has five coaches All-SEC selections on defense. Clemson transfer safety Khalil Barnes is the lone Georgia All-SEC player that made the media's All-SEC team to miss the coaches All-SEC team.
College football coaches have shown Georgia a lot of respect this preseason. Georgia is back-to-back defending SEC champions and are the No. 3 team in the US LBM Coaches Poll. Georgia's roster is stacked with talent and all 11 of Georgia's coaches All-SEC picks are returning players from last season.
One notable omission from both All-SEC teams is kicker Peyton Woodring, who has been outstanding both of the past couple of seasons. Woodring is accurate and reliable, but there's a lot of talented kickers in the SEC.

Hull City owner Acun Ilicali has criticised pundits Joe Cole and Carlton Cole after they mocked his side's chances of Premier League survival on a podcast.
Speaking on The Dressing Room podcast, former England and Chelsea midfielder Joe Cole said he had turned down the chance to be a pundit for their opening match - adding he would be "stunned if they stayed up".
He joked: "They've come here through the back door. They've slipped in."
Hull achieved promotion to the Premier League with a last-minute win over Middlesbrough in the play-off final at Wembley in May.
This season will be Hull's first in the Premier League since 2017. They only survived relegation from the Championship to League One on goal difference in 2025.

Journalist Roberto Morales believes Jose Mourinho has already given a strong indication of how he wants his new-look midfield to operate.
After a busy summer that has brought six new signings and several departures, Mourinho is still working towards his ideal starting XI.
There are questions in several positions, particularly in midfield and attack, although the Portuguese coach's use of a 4-2-3-1 system during pre-season has provided some early clues.
According to Roberto Morales, as relayed in Defensa Central, Mourinho's preferred double pivot could consist of Aurelien Tchouameni and new signing Bernardo Silva.
The pairing would place two very different profiles at the base of Real Madrid's midfield, with Tchouameni providing defensive protection and Bernardo offering control and quality in possession.

San Francisco 49ers running back Christian McCaffrey continues to deal with minor muscle tightness.
The injury has kept McCaffrey out of recent practices with the 49ers, who had a joint practice with the Los Angeles Chargers on Tuesday, Aug. 18.
49ers coach Kyle Shanahan told reporters that tightness is what has kept the star player out of practice, while ruling out the possibility of McCaffrey missing practice due to a contract dispute.
"I think if it wasn't Christian and we were in a game week, I think he would play today," Shanahan said.
The coach has said the 49ers don't want to rush McCaffrey back to avoid a significant, long-term injury.

TUCSON, Ariz. — Here in the office of Arizona offensive coordinator Seth Doege, you will hear the story of a college football species that has practically gone extinct.
Doege, who played quarterback at Texas Tech a decade and a half ago, points to the sofa up against the wall. That's where Noah Fifita was sitting seven months ago after Arizona completed its surprising 9-4 season, when Doege asked a question that would determine both of their futures.
"There's no doubt he's the best quarterback in the league, so people are hitting this guy up to tamper, to say, 'Hey, we'll pay you $3.5 million to come play for a year," Doege told Yahoo Sports. "And you know how it is. When you go 9-4 on a team that was picked dead last in the Big 12, now all the coaches are getting hit up [for new jobs].
"So I sat him down and said, 'Dude, what is your plan? Man to man, brother to brother, you know there's real love here. What are you gonna do? Because if you're leaving, I need to think about what I need to do. But if you're staying, I'm with you. And then he said the exact same thing, and that was that."
At Arizona, which looks like a dark-horse contender for the Big 12 ******* le, most everything revolves around Fifita and his unconventional decision to not merely spend all five years at the same school but at a program with a somewhat tortured football history and a relatively low national profile.
