The deafening roar of Kroger Field that fueled a 17-13 halftime lead eventually gave way to a much heavier, quieter reality. When the final whistle blew on a 45-17 loss to Alabama, the scoreboard reflected a fractured dream of an upset, leaving players and fans alike processing the sting of what could have been yet again.
For Will Stein, the immediate aftermath wasn't about pointing fingers; it was about raw accountability and a profound gratitude for a fanbase that delivered a championship-level atmosphere.
The fans showed up in full force, selling out Kroger Field for Will Stein's SEC debut, creating an environment that Stein described as "unbelievable," "loud," and "energetic." Recognizing the massive emotional investment of the crowd, he didn't mince words. "I apologize to our fans for the way that we finished," he admitted, fully aware of the collective heartbreak echoing through the stands and the locker room. "I know our guys are hurting."
That hurt can't carry on too long; the SEC is an unforgiving league, and the 2nd-half performance against Alabama can't bleed over to next week.
The first half offered a vivid glimpse into the program's potential that Will Stein spoke on before the season started. The defense hunted the ball, securing three takeaways, while the offense capitalized to carry a lead into the locker room. But the second half brought stalled drives and exhausted defenders. Pinned back by short fields, the defense was asked to hold back the Tide a few too many times. "When you're defending a short field virtually the entire half, and we weren't converting on third downs, that was tough on our defense," Stein noted, acknowledging the brutal physical toll.

For the eighth time in nine seasons, the Milwaukee Brewers are going to the playoffs.
One of the game's most consistent powers ***** ured its spot in the postseason by flattening the Cincinnati Reds 20-0 Friday, Sept. 11 at Milwaukee's American Family Field. It's highly likely this won't be the final celebration before the Brewers finish the regular season: They hold a 10-game lead over the Chicago Cubs in the National League Central, with a magic number of three to clinch the division.
Milwaukee blitzed Reds left-hander Andrew Abbott for nine hits and eight runs in the first two innings Friday, scoring six times in the bottom of the second to build an 8-0 lead. Brice Turang hit a three-run homer and Jake Bauers a two-run shot, providing more than enough support for starting pitcher Dustin May.
Then, it got absurd. The Brewers rocked reliever Luis Mey for eight runs in the bottom of the fifth, extending the lead to 17-0. Milwaukee registered eight hits in the fifth, two by Garrett Mitchell, including a grand slam.
Per usual, Milwaukee's proven greater than the sum of its parts. The club has a bona fide ace and budding superstar in right-hander Jacob Misiorowski, what with his 104-mph fastball and major league-leading 236 strikeouts. The club has a reliable No. 2 starter in fellow second-year man Logan Henderson, but its rotation faces question marks after that.

It wasn't a great night for New England Patriots wide receiver Romeo Doubs, who finished with zero catches on three targets. Doubs, who the Patriots signed to a lucrative contract during the offseason, was expected to be the clear WR2, part of the reason why the Patriots moved on from Kayshon Boutte.
With A.J. Brown going down on Wednesday night during the Seattle Seahawks game, there was hope within Patriots fan circles that Doubs would step up in a major way. Instead of that being the case, he was just as bad as anybody could have imagined, and it was part of the reason why New England lost.
Instead of sugarcoating things after the game, it was positive to at least hear Doubs have some accountability for his play.
"No. Like I said, I just wasn't locked in enough on the football," Doubs said, per USA Today. "The results speak for themselves. I'll be better moving forward."

On paper, the Dallas Cowboys' offensive line looks largely the same as last year. Tyler Guyton is at left tackle, Tyler Smith is left guard, Cooper Beebe is the center, Tyler Booker is at right guard, and Terence Steele is penciled in at right tackle.
Anyone who remembers what happened last season knows things don't always go according to plan. Four of the five Cowboys starters missed time in 2025, with three of them missing three or more games. And anyone who's been tracking training camp news knows their performances haven't all been sunshine and rainbows. Contingency plans are in the works, and depth options have changed considerably from last year.
The elephant in the room (no, that's not a fat joke) is the struggles of Steele at right tackle. After regressing a bit last year, Steele took a pay cut over the offseason just to stay aboard. Unfortunately, that regression continued into this season and now Steele's starting job is tenuous, at best.
Many will remember that earlier in the offseason Nate Thomas was named as a challenger to Guyton at left tackle. Once camp opened, Guyton, healthy for the first time in a while, had no problems dispatching the competition, prompting Dallas to try Thomas on the right side with Steele.
Things clearly didn't go well for Thomas on the right side either, since he was soon shipped off in a trade with the Houston Texans, but not before the Cowboys added a new tackle to the mix. Broderick Jones, a former first-round pick of the Pittsburgh Steelers, was acquired on August 29 and immediately slotted in to compete with Steele at right tackle.

Starting safety Brenden Jordan was a late scratch from the Texas Tech football team's starting lineup against Abilene Christian, the team announcing he would miss the first two games of the season just before kickoff.
The initial news release said Jordan's absence was non-injury related reasons. Joey McGuire explained after the game that Jordan has been issued a suspension for a violation of team rules.
"He'll be back," McGuire said. "He's in good standing. He was on the sideline tonight and we expect him back. He won't play these first two games."
Jordan was the veteran returner in Tech's secondary, entering his fourth year with the program and had started 15-straight starts at the end of last season.
Peyton Morgan and Malik Esquerra started at the safety positions for Texas Tech in the 33-10 win over ACU.

The 2026 version of the New Boston Glenwood volleyball program is no exception to this rule.
With a tight core of players, a talented group that will see six of its top seven players return for the 2027-28 season and one of its best multi-sport athletes leading the program in New Boston Glenwood alumni Ali Herrforth leading them, the ceiling for New Boston's volleyball program is certainly an elevated one.
That's already showing up in the early results that Hamilton's group has accumulated to begin 2026, as the Lady Tigers are 3-1 to begin the year with impressive four-set victories over Manchester and Western and a five-set road win at Northwest.

One of the surprise decisions during roster cutdown day for the Jacksonville Jaguars was the team's decision to release cornerback Jabbar Muhammad.
Dating back to offseason programs, Muhammad was often a standout performer. This included coming away with a game-winning pass breakup in the preseason opener against New Orleans.
However, instead of rostering Muhammad, the Jaguars chose to keep Christian Braswell, who, at least defensively, didn't seem to stand out as frequently.
So what was the reasoning behind this decision? Well, as GM James Gladstone explained on Tuesday, Braswell's ability to contribute on special teams was a differentiator.
"I think there's tough dynamics with a lot of these decisions," Gladstone said. "Christian's been there, done that. Has a notable role on special teams come game day and you talk about actives versus inactives and what it is that is going to differentiate guys."

The Los Angeles Rams are entering the 2026 season with an unprecedented amount of leadership.
After finishing their initial 53-man roster Sunday, the Rams announced Monday that their players had voted for 11 team captains. That is the largest captain group of the Sean McVay era, surpassing the nine captains selected in 2020. The Rams had seven captains in 2025.
The group is also notable for its balance. Five captains represent the offense, five represent the defense and Joe Cardona represents special teams. It includes six returning Rams captains and three newcomers to Los Angeles, while Davante Adams and Coleman Shelton are first-time Rams captains.
McVay described the group as having as much leadership as the Rams have had during his tenure, and the list certainly backs up that ******* sment.

The Indianapolis Colts close out the preseason at home against the Detroit Lions on Saturday, and whether it's for playing time or a roster spot, several positional battles are still taking place late in training camp.

UWF football made history in more ways than one Thursday night.
In their first game at the NCAA Division I FCS level, the Argos upset No. 16 Southern Illinois 34-31 in front of a PenAir Field record crowd of 6,124.
UWF (1-0 overall) was balanced on offense and forced four turnovers on defense.
Redshirt sophomore Ty'jay Davis completed seven of 17 passes for 109 yards, two touchdowns, and ran for 88 yards in first collegiate start. The Argos ran for 226 yards, getting 71 yards from TJ Lane and 33 yards and a touchdown on five carries from Markel Townsend.
SIU (0-1) preseason All-American quarterback DJ Williams left the game with an injury in the second quarter and didn't return. He completed three of eight passes for 19 yards and ran eight times for 46 yards.

His postseason numbers saw him average 11.8 points on a 50.5% field goal percentage while racking up 3.4 rebounds, 3.9 ***** ists, and 0.8 steals.
The 2026-27 NBA season is set to be a big year for Harper. Heading into Year 2 of his career, ESPN projects that he will become a frontrunner for the NBA 6MOTY award.

Los Angeles was unaware they were getting a future Hall of Fame closer when they signed Kenley Jansen in 2004. After five minor league seasons behind the plate, the organization moved Jansen to the mound in 2009.
A year later, the right-handed pitcher made his debut and became a full-time bullpen arm in 2011. After taking over the team's closer role in 2012, he had one of the best stretches from any MLB closer. From 2014-2019, Jansen averaged 40 saves and 0.89 WHIP. While his fastball velocity isn't what it used to be, Jansen is still closing games and can reach 500 career saves by the end of the 2026 season.

Minnesota United FC have acquired forward Maurice Malone from Austrian Bundesliga side SK Sturm Graz, the club announced Monday.
The 26-year-old former German youth international is under contract through the 2029-30 season with an option for 2030-31.
Since developing at German Bundesliga side FC Augsburg, Malone has tallied 47g/32a in 192 first-team matches. Sturm Graz, Austria Wien, FC Basel and Wolfsberger AC are among his different stops throughout Europe.

Ollie Watkins and Emi Martinez were absent from Aston Villa's matchday squad named to face Brighton in their Premier League opener amid rumours of an imminent exit for both.
Villa frontman Watkins is wanted by Saudi Pro League club Al-Hilal, and his omission from the travelling squad to the south coast will only heighten speculation.
Goalkeeper Martinez has also been heavily linked with a departure from Villa Park, as he was last summer, but misses out on the squad due to a lack of match fitness following a recent return from his post-World Cup break.

DENVER – Brandon Cisse's welcome-to-the-NFL moment hasn't come yet on the Green Bay Packers starting defense, but there's always punt coverage.
The Packers rookie found himself on the wrong end of a Denver Broncos double-team block covering a punt late in the first quarter. Cisse said he felt "a little something" in his knee as he limped toward the sideline, eventually visiting the blue medical tent. He did not play again in the Packers' 33-13 win in their second preseason game, replaced by veteran cornerback Benjamin St-Juste.
Cisse said he does not expect to miss any time with the injury.
"I just got beat up a little bit," Cisse said. "Nothing serious at all. I was trying to go back in. Just being precautionary. I'm fine. Nothing to worry about. I wanted to go back in."
Cisse wasn't in the medical tent long. Immediately after exiting, he crouched in his defensive stance and backpedaled. He also made cuts while on the sideline, moving without ****** istance, before riding a stationary bike.

A one-on-one matchup between Paige Bueckers and Caitlin Clark ended with a whistle, a heated complaint and a potential fine for the Dallas Wings star. The sequence unfolded during the fourth quarter of Thursday night's game between the Wings and Indiana Fever. After Makayla Timpson secured a defensive rebound, she delivered the ball to Clark, who pushed it up the floor.
Bueckers attempted to stop Clark in transition but was called for a personal foul. The former UConn star immediately disputed the decision and appeared to argue that Clark had used her arm to create separation. The disagreement continued long enough for the official to **** s Bueckers a technical foul.
The technical initially was reported as Bueckers' second of the season, according to Athlon Sports. However, her first technical, issued during a May 22 game against the Atlanta Dream, later was rescinded. If Thursday's call is upheld, it would count as Bueckers' first official technical of the year.
WNBA players are fined $500 for each of their first three technical fouls. The penalty increases to $1,000 for technicals four through seven. An eighth technical results in a $1,500 fine and a one-game suspension, with another suspension following every second technical after that threshold. That means Bueckers could receive a $500 fine following the Clark sequence.

Bishop McCort Catholic High School girls wrestling coach Kaura Coles pinned Venezuela's Alexa Janniriel Alvarez Valenzuela in 2:59 to earn the United World Wrestling U20 freestyle gold medal Wednesday at 53 kilograms in Bratislava, Slovakia.
Canada's Coles beat the United States' Taylor Whiting in a 3:45 fall and India's Muskan Muskan 9-7 in her first two bouts. In a semifinal matchup, Coles topped China's Yuxuan Li 14-7.
Coles became Canada's first world champion in 2024 at the Under-17 level. She earned gold at the 2024 Pan-American Championships as a 53-kilogram wrestler.

TORONTO — Kelsey Mitchell left the Indiana Fever's bench and headed to the locker room in the fourth quarter of the win over the Toronto Tempo because she started overheating, Fever coach Stephanie White said.
Scotiabank Arena, which is not the Tempo's typical home arena, was atypically warm on Tuesday night. It's the second-straight game the Fever have played in a warmer-than-usual arena, as State Farm Arena in Atlanta (not the Dream's typical home venue, either) was also unseasonably warm compared to the chilly Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis — all three NBA arenas, too.
"It seems like she just got overheated," White said. "I mean, this is two games in a row where we played in really, really hot environments, so all indications right now is that she was just overheated."
The Fever star, who tied a WNBA record with her 20th straight games scoring 20 or more points, checked out of the game for the final time with 24 seconds remaining in the third quarter. She went back to the locker room in the fourth quarter and did not return to the bench for the rest of the game. She finished with 29 points on 11-of-16 shooting.

The Hendrick Motorsports driver has struggled over the last few months and finally earned another top-5 finish at Richmond. NASCAR taking Elliott's No. 9 car to the R&D Center doesn't automatically mean something is wrong; however, it does heighten the risk of a potential penalty.
In the NextGen car era, drivers and teams have received significant penalties when NASCAR takes a car to the R&D Center. There have been several occasions when they have lost over 100 points due to an infraction. Most cars are cleared after going to the R&D Center, but exceptions exist.
Elliott will likely be OK; however, NASCAR has blasted teams in the past for any wrongdoing.
