The Atlanta Braves announced Tuesday that they have selected the contract of right-hander Elieser Hernández and optioned left-hander Connor Thomas to Triple-A Gwinnett.
The move comes after Monday's game, where Thomas gave up 11 earned runs in just 2.2 innings against the New York Mets. Hernández is back with Atlanta after appearing for the club last week, as he continues to bounce between the Braves and Triple-A Gwinnett as a bullpen depth option.
Tuesday's washout in New York leads to a split doubleheader at Citi Field today. Games will be at 1:10 and 7:10 ET.
Boston Red Sox infielder Curtis Mead is heading to the 10-day injured list due to a broken wrist.
San Francisco Giants pitcher Trevor McDonald will undergo Tommy John surgery, causing him to miss the rest of 2026 and likely all of 2027.

The Twins offense tonight could only be described as groundball happy, get ready to read the words "double play" about a million times. In the 1st, 2 on and 1 out, Kody Clemens hits into an inning ending double play. In the 2nd inning, Luke Keaschall ends the inning with their second double play.
They finally broke through in the 4th inning, after Clemens doubled and Josh Bell hit an RBI single to put the Twins up 1-0. In the bottom of the 5th Alan Roden hits into the 3rd Twin-killer of the night.
In the top of the 6th, Josh Rojas and Lane Thomas did a double steal, with Rojas stealing home. I wasn't there to see it but Gameday says it happened. Two batters later, the Twin killer himself, Salvador Perez, hit the go-ahead RBI single to put the Royals up 2-1.
The Twins rallied again, with Clemens HBP and Bell singling to center with Clemens going 1st-to-3rd on the play. Then Victor Caratini ended the inning by, you guessed it, hitting into the 4th double play of the night. I'm so glad I missed almost all of this game because that had to be depressing.
What wasn't depressing was the performance of Taj Bradley and the bullpen tonight. Taj racked up 10 strikeouts in his 6 innings of work, allowing just 3 hits, 2 runs, and 3 walks. Then Kody Funderburk, Travis Adams, and Jack Anderson combined for 3 innings of shutout pitching, allowing just 1 hit and striking out 4.

A few talking points on the starting lineup. The big news was a first start for Hayden Hackney. The other talking point for the team was the absence of Jarrad Branthwaite. It was reported that this was as part of his planned reintegration into the squad. Tyler Dibling and Mykolenko return and Jake O'Brien started on the bench. David Moyes was starting with his favourite 4-2-3-1 with Beto up top.
A lovely night in Stoke with Everton in their all blue kits. Everton were immediately on the front foot and a nice bit of interplay only broke down when Dewsbury-Hall ****** ed a ball into the box and it was easily handled by the Stoke keeper. Interestingly, it looked like Dibling was playing at right ack with Hackney in front of him.
An early corner was recycled by the Blues and when it fell to George, he laced a shot just narrowly wide of the post. A very good start from the boys in blue. Stoke tried to slow the game down and get on the ball but Everton were pressing high. When George intercepted a pass, his pass was slightly overhit for Dibling.
Everton went off the boil and some lax defending by Tarkowski allowed Gallagher in on Travers but a great leg save denied the home team. It was then Everton's turn to hold onto the ball. It was all a little scrappy. Beto did some fighting for the ball in the middle of the park with no end product. A nice ove down the right side saw Rohl deliver a nice cross but no one was there when the keeper spilled the ball.
The interplay on the left side between KDH and George was really good. However, Travers was the saviour again as Thomas drilled another shot on the goal. Everton were then hanging on as Stoke delivered cross after cross.

The Green Bay Packers announced four roster moves ahead of the start of training camp, including a swap of international exemption players.
The team released kicker Lucas Havrisik and edge rusher Dante Barnett and signed tight end Thomas Yassmin and kicker Lenny Krieg on Tuesday.
The kicker swap means Krieg will now represent the competition for rookie Trey Smack, while the addition of Yassmin provides a healthy body at tight end, where the Packers are dealing with injuries to Tucker Kraft and Luke Musgrave (both on the PUP list) to start camp.
Krieg made a 57-yard field goal and his lone extra point attempt during the preseason with the Atlanta Falcons in 2025.
Yassmin, a former Rugby player, played 42 snaps during the preseason with the Denver Broncos in 2024 and 13 with the Los Angeles Chargers in 2025. He has never appeared in a regular season game.

The Detroit Lions open their 2026 training camp on Wednesday, and on Tuesday, their veterans reported to the team's Allen Park training facility. As players rejoin the team, it's common for the team to make a few last-minute transactions in preparation for camp. Earlier in the week, we saw the Lions place three players on the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list, and on Tuesday, they placed Christian Mahogany on the Non-Football Injury (NFI) list, Christian Izien on the Non-Football Illness (NFI) list, and released veteran nose tackle Jay Tufele.
If you're not familiar with the difference between the lists, which list a player lands on is based on where they were injured and the type of injury. If a player was hurt while participating in an activity directly related to the NFL (games, practices, workouts, etc.), they land on the PUP list. If a player was injured in a non-NFL activity (which can include private workouts or in their personal life), they land on the NFI (injury) list. If a player is dealing with an illness (which can range from having the flu or Mononucleosis—like Mahogany had as a rookie—or even more serious illnesses), they land in the NFI (illness) category.
These lists also have some similarities as well. Like with the PUP list, placing a player on either NFI list at this stage does not require them to miss any games. They are restricted from practicing while on the injury lists, but players are also eligible to be removed from any of these lists at any time if a team believes a player is healthy enough to begin practicing. However, if a player remains on any of the lists through roster cutdowns, they will be forced to miss the first four games of the regular season.
Mahogany returns to Detroit this season expecting to work to retain his starting left guard job, so any absence will certainly hinder his ability to compete for that role. While he is out, look for either veteran Ben Bartch, second-year lineman Miles Frazier, or recently traded-for Juice Scruggs to try to seize the opportunity in front of them.
Izien joined the Lions this offseason and was working with the starting safeties in the spring as he was trying to acclimate to the Lions' scheme quickly, as he was also expected to compete for a starting role with Brian Branch and Kerby Joseph on the PUP list. While Izien misses time, Thomas Harper and Avonte Maddox, along with veteran Chuck Clark, should have great opportunities to get into the starting rotation at practice.

Jaguars wide receiver Brian Thomas Jr. would like to put the 2025 season in the rearview mirror.
Thomas had 87 catches for 1,282 yards and 10 touchdowns after being drafted in the first round in 2024, but his second season halted all talk of him jumping right to the top of the list of NFL wideouts. Thomas caught less than half of the ****** thrown his way and he was credited with 10 drops en route to 48 catches for 707 yards and two touchdowns.
The drop in production led to trade chatter this offseason, but the Jaguars were quick to shut it down and call Thomas a big part of their plans for 2026. That talk and other doubts about his upside still found their way to Thomas and he credits a conversation with his father for putting him in the right mindset to bounce back.
"We heard everything that was going on, all that, but he just told me, 'Come out here and be undeniable,'" Thomas said, via Mark Lane of the ****** ociated Press. "That's just something I live by every day. I want to be undeniable."
Jakobi Meyers and Parker Washington stepped up as the team's most reliable wideouts during a 13-4 season, so Jacksonville has a full deck of options in the passing game. They'd still like to see Thomas get back to something close to that undeniable rookie form as they try to defend their division ****** le this fall.

I broke down the 2027 scouting classes in my early summer scouting series, and the room has a ton of potential with a long list of potential standout players. I broke down the offense and defense in articles and I suggest reading those for a broad aspect of the room. Brock Bowers remains an elite tight end, and arguably the best in the NFL, but the Raiders do have some questions behind Bowers after the 2026 season. Former 2nd rounder Michael Mayer is sent to be a free agent, and with a good season he should be looking at a decent contract as a TE2, blocking specialist. Additionally, Ian Thomas is set to be a free agent and Las Vegas also has former UDFA Carter Runyon, who's flashed, but it's likely even with retaining Mayer the Raiders should add another TE.
These rankings are extremely early, and they will evolve over not only the summer but the next 8-10 months throughout the season, and into draft season. Some lists will feature 10, 15, 20, or more ranked prospects but I'll include others on the list below to note.
Jamari Johnson, Oregon – 6'5/260, R-So
Johnson was a key focal point of the Ducks offense last year with 32 receptions, 510 yards, and 3 TD after coming over from Louisville. He's better than Kenyon Sadiq, and in my opinion has a chance to be a better prospect than Bowers. Johnson has absurd movement skills, he's shown exceptional length, fires off the ball, and Johnson also shows a ton of quickness and movement in his route running. Johnson has fluid hips, he makes his cuts well, and Johnson shows an innate ability to adjust to the ball in the air and come down with tough catches. Where he makes a ton of impact is as a run blocker, where Johnson uses his length and athleticism with good technique, and a ton of lower body power to get off the line of scrimmage and into ***** e. Johnson will need to continue his play as the starter at TE, instead of the supplementary piece, but he has the core traits, athleticism, and technique to be a top 10 pick.
Peter Clarke, Temple – 6'6/270, Sr

With the MLB trade deadline quickly approaching, contenders around the league are evaluating where they need to improve before making a postseason push. While some clubs are searching for another bat or bullpen help, starting pitching remains the biggest priority for many teams hoping to play deep into October.
Whether it's because of injuries, inconsistent performances, or simply the desire to add another frontline arm, these eight teams stand out as organizations that should be actively pursuing starting pitching before the deadline.

The Tampa Bay Rays have been one of baseball's best teams this season, but another quality starter would make an already dangerous club even more formidable. A deeper rotation could prove invaluable during a playoff run.

Connor Thomas got thrown to the wolves on Monday night, and the Mets' broadcast booth could barely stomach watching it happen.
The Braves reliever was left in to twist against New York's lineup long after the outcome had been decided, and by the time Atlanta finally mercy-killed the outing, Thomas had been shelled for 11 earned runs — the most any reliever has allowed in a major-league game in more than half a decade — according to MLB.com's Anthony DiComo.
His final line read: 2 2/3 innings, 10 hits, 11 runs, five walks, two strikeouts, three home runs, 78 pitches.
As Gary Cohen mentioned on the SNY broadcast of New York's 14-3 win, Atlanta had ground through five consecutive one-run games in the days before Monday, and rather than burn another arm in a game that was already lost, the Braves made the call to sacrifice Thomas to the baseball gods.
The 28-year-old left-hander — a Tifton, Georgia, native and Georgia Tech product who made his MLB debut with the Brewers back in 2025 — had only been summoned from the minors about two days prior. He's never been treated as a top prospect, and he entered Monday having not thrown more than 70 pitches in a single appearance since he was a starter for St. Louis' Triple-A Memphis affiliate back in September 2023 — more than 1,000 days ago.

Training camp for the Jacksonville Jaguars begins on July 29 and, of course, there will be plenty to keep our eyes on over the next month of practices and preseason games.
We recently highlighted 14 things to watch on offense and another seven to watch on defense.
But what are the big storylines? The things that will grab our attention from the start of training camp to the end?
We detailed what those topics are and why they matter.
Lawrence and Thomas building their chemistry has been a focal point all offseason, and that emphasis appears to be working. Thomas had a very good showing during offseason programs, while Lawrence continued to push the ball downfield -- another offseason priority.

Wales lost the first set 7-4 but battled back to win the second set 6-3 to set up the sudden death end.
After Thomas had set up the chance and James held his nerve with two brilliant final bowls. New Zealand's final delivery failed and Wales celebrated.

Tottenham Hotspur defender Micky van de Ven believes supporters will see a far more exciting brand of football under new manager Roberto De Zerbi in the coming season.
The defender, who had been heavily linked with a move away from Tottenham this summer, praised the Italian's attacking style and the fresh energy he has brought to the squad.
In a recent interview, Van de Ven said that the team is already adapting to a system that focuses on keeping possession and playing on the front foot.
His comments also aimed a sly dig at former manager Thomas Frank, who was sacked in February following a series of disappointing performances.
"It's going to be different compared to the former manager we had last season," Van de Ven said (via talkSPORT).

It's been a busy offseason for UNC basketball, which had to put together a roster for its first season under head coach Michael Malone while keeping an eye on the future.
The Tar Heels will have at least 10 new players on Malone's first roster around returners Jarin Stevenson, Jaydon Young and Isaiah Denis. Maximo Adams, Sayon Keita, Kevin Thomas and Malloy Smith are four freshmen set to join that group in Chapel Hill.
Looking beyond the 2026-27 season and ahead at future recruiting classes, Malone has scholarship offers out to 12 players in the 2027 class and five players in the 2028 group, according to 247Sports.
Here's a full breakdown of the players UNC has offered in the 2027 and 2028 recruiting classes, as of July 27.
A Rocky Mount native who started his career at Northern Nash High School before deciding to transfer to Southeastern Prep in Florida ahead of his senior season, Rosser is the top-ranked player in the 2027 class, according to the 247Sports Composite. The 6-foot-10, 195-pound forward just wrapped up his second unofficial visit at UNC and helped the U17 U.S. National team win the FIBA World Cup in Turkey. Rosser averaged 16 points per game and scored a team-high 23 points in the **** le game against Serbia. He could be the crown jewel of Malone's 2027 recruiting class.

Once upon a time (although it wasn't just once), the Braves used Carlos Carrasco in a close game. Ronald Acuña Jr. got injured in that game and ended up missing about six weeks of play. The use of Carrasco turned sinister, the Braves lost that game, and then ended up mired in a funk that lasted for a good chunk of Acuña's absence.
Tonight, Ronald Acuña Jr. made his return to the lineup. It could have been a triumphant time, building on the Braves' recent strong run of results. Instead, amid some rain and another indifferent outing from Martin Perez, the Braves opted to insert Connor Thomas, the "last guy" in their bullpen, into a tie game. It went south almost immediately, and then it kind of ran out south to go, as the Mets just pummeled Thomas into oblivion. To the Braves' credit, they let Thomas wear it and didn't use another pitcher, avoiding a double-down mistake of using Thomas to save the rest of the bullpen but then not actually saving the rest of the bullpen. (Jorge Mateo got the last out in lieu of Thomas, after the score had ballooned to 14-3 in favor of the Mets.)
Before all that, though, the game was pretty cool. In his first major league PA in a while, Acuña fell behind 0-2 against Zac Thornton, battled back to 3-2, and then teed off on a pitch down the middle, knocking it 108 mph to center for a solid single. Drake Baldwin followed followed with a hard liner single of his own, and the Braves seemed to be in business. Unfortunately, Matt Olson hit into a double play, but Ozzie Albies, as part of a measure of personal revenge for possibly a career-worst game on Sunday, legged out an infield hit to plate his buddy for the first run of the game.
Martin Perez did not have a shutdown first inning. A hard-hit grounder went for a leadoff hit, and then Francisco Lindor got his arms extended on a cutter on the edge away and nearly hit it out of the park. The play ended up being kind of weird, as it looked like it was just going to be a double, but the ball bounced far enough off the wall that Lindor ended up getting an RBI triple. But, Perez pachinko also cuts the other way, as a grounder to third, a strikeout, and flyout to center kept the game tied at one run apiece.
Nothing much happened in the second or the top of the third. In the bottom half of the inning, after a leadoff single, Lindor again took a Perez pitch on the outer edge, this time a changeup, and pulled it into left for a two-run homer. Perez was hitting his spots, but it didn't matter. That score didn't last long: after Olson drew a leadoff walk in the fourth, Albies victimized Thornton by crushing an elevated fastball for a definitive non-cheapie homer. Michael Harris II singled and it looked like the Braves might've solved Thornton, but that didn't end up being the case, as Mauricio Dubon popped out and Austin Riley hit into a double play.

Texas A&M is closer than ever to securing the No. 1-ranked 2027 recruiting class after securing four-star linebacker Mikahi Allen's commitment earlier this month, bringing the total number of commits to 27 heading into the 2026 college football season.
While third-year coach Mike Elko and his staff will be in the running to flip multiple 2027 commits, which could include five-star CB and South Carolina commit Joshua Dobson, five-star running back Landen Williams-Callis will announce his commitment on August 1, but is currently trending to land with the Texas Longhorns.
As soon as the 2026 season begins, the Aggies will use every home game as a hosting opportunity for the 2028 cycle, which will include two priority prospects who are Texas A&M legacies. This spring, Elko officially offered four-star running back Ian Thomas, son of former Aggie star running back Rodney Thomas, who, according to Rivals insider Sam Spiegelman, is heavily favored to land at his Father's alma mater.
Texas A&M AHC and RB coach Trooper Taylor has led Thomas's recruitment, and while some believe Texas A&M is the leader due to his Aggie lineage, that's far from the truth.
"Coach was clear that it was me and how I play that got me the offer," Thomas stated to Rivals. "I appreciated him saying that."

MLB Trade Rumors | Charlie Wright: The Yankees rearranged their planned starters for this weekend's series in Philadelphia. Cam Schlittler was **** ped up to start Friday on normal rest, with Will Warren pushed back to Sunday. Warren appeared in relief Wednesday to help provide some coverage during a doubleheader. With Max Fried back in the rotation and Carlos Rodón on the comeback trail, Warren's recent usage suggests his spot in the rotation could be in jeopardy.
MLB.com | Thomas Harrigan: The Yankees have gotten virtually no offensive production from the catcher position this season. With the trade deadline looming, expect them to pursue an upgrade. The most likely candidate is Minnesota's Ryan Jeffers, a righty bat who's a free agent after the season. The Athletics' Shea Langeliers and Colorado's Hunter Goodman are higher-upside plays with more years of club control, but there's no guarantee either will be moved. The Mets' Francisco Alvarez and Baltimore's Adley Rutschman loom as longshots, with Cincinnati's Tyler Stephenson and Minnesota's Victor Caratini less exciting backup plans should the rest fall through.
NJ.com | James Mertz: Paul Blackburn has broken out with the Yankees this year after moving to the bullpen full-time, posting a 2.00 ERA in 35 outings. He attributes the career renaissance in part with the consistency the Yankees have provided. The veteran contrasts that with his tenure with the Mets, who constantly shuttled him between the rotation and the bullpen. "I felt like we were just playing a video game," he said of his time across town, during which he posted a 6.00 ERA in 12 games.
CBS Sports | Rotowire Staff: Luis Gil faced live batters on Friday for the first time since early May, throwing BP. He's been on the minor-league IL, working back from right shoulder inflammation. The former Rookie of the Year was disastrous in four starts early this year and has no guaranteed role upon his return.

Alyssa Thomas has been around the WNBA long enough to know that one loss doesn't define a season. Even after Phoenix fell to the Los Angeles Sparks twice earlier in the summer, Thomas wasn't interested in dwelling on what went wrong. Instead, her focus remained on the bigger picture as the Mercury approached the Sparks for the third time Wednesday afternoon.
"We've been in a lot of games that have been close," Thomas said. "They haven't gone our way, but when you think about playoff basketball, that's what pretty much every game is like."
After helping lead Phoenix to the WNBA Finals last season, Thomas admitted this year has looked different. The Mercury have spent much of the season trying to climb back into the postseason picture, something she isn't used to.
"I'm definitely not used to being at the bottom," Thomas said. "I'm accustomed to a different standard."
Even so, she believes the Mercury have been closer than their record might suggest.

If ever Muzzy Donohue needed to center himself on Friday at TPC Twin Cities in Blaine, he simply looked down at his ball marker and the memory of his late grandma Marcey snapped him back into focus.
"We've been talking about our grandma and how she's been with us," said Donohue, a 25-year-old former graduate of St. Thomas Academy, who is playing the 3M Open this week on a sponsor's exemption. "She passed away on Monday."
As hard as it's been on the whole family to lose its matriarch, Donohue said he couldn't help but feel like some divine intervention was at play as he shot an impressive 8-under 63 to make the cut in his PGA Tour debut.
There were a number of putts that Donohue either pushed or pulled that somehow found their way into the back of the cup. He's operating as if he's had somebody looking down on him from above.
"Yes, 100%," Donohue said. "Hopefully, she's not sick of me and will stick around."

Grassroots sports clubs across Shropshire say they are struggling to keep their pitches alive because of the hot, dry weather.
Telford Hornets Rugby Club are one of many who said the pitches they play on are dying because spending to irrigate would cost them thousands of pounds, money which they do not have.
Since 15 June, most of England has recorded less than 10mm of rain, which has meant many clubs are praying for a sustained downpour.
The club's chairman, Neil Thomas, said they have had to learn strategies to keep their pitches in as good condition as possible, so they can continue playing on them.
As many sport teams return from their off-season, players are faced with the prospect of playing on hardened pitches, which physiotherapists say increase the chances of soft tissue injuries.
