After months of roster building and speculation, Eagles football is well and truly on the horizon with the first practice of training camp set for Wednesday morning. And on that horizon, it shouldn't be forgotten just how much is at stake this season; the Eagles have one of the most talented rosters in the NFL and at least some reason for optimism that they can continue the trend of following up a Super-Bowl hungover season with a deep postseason run the next year.
As we eagerly await the start of this season's journey, here are five thoughts on Jalen Carter signing a contract extension and the biggest position battles that will play out over the next handful of weeks.
On training camp eve, the Eagles made Carter the richest defensive tackle in the NFL with a four-year contract extension reportedly worth $152 million with another $8 million in incentives and $106 million in guarantees according to ESPN.
Since Carter had both this upcoming season and the fifth-year option in 2027 left on his rookie deal, his contract is now essentially a six-year contract that will give the Eagles some flexibility in how they handle that new money. My guess is the cap hits will be friendlier than the initial shock value may have suggested as a result, even with Carter surpassing the $100-million guaranteed mark the Tennessee **** ans gave Jeffery Simmons earlier this month.

After dazzling in the NBA Summer League earlier this month, Chicago Bulls rookie Caleb Wilson earned high praise from Hall of Famer Charles Barkley on Tuesday.
Wilson was a consensus second-team All-American selection at North Carolina, averaging 19.8 points, 9.4 rebounds, 2.7 ******* ists, 1.5 steals and 1.4 blocks while shooting 57.8% from the field. He set the freshman program records for scoring average and 20-point games (17).
The 6-foot-10 Wilson was highly touted entering the draft because of his versatility, athleticism and physical traits, boasting a 7-foot, 1/4-inch wingspan. Barkley, speaking on the "Dan Patrick Show," believes the Bulls hit a home run by selecting Wilson with the fourth overall pick.
I think the Chicago Bulls got the best rookie in the NBA. When I was talking to coaches and general managers, they are like, 'Who would you take with the No. 1 pick?' I said, 'Caleb Wilson.' They are like, 'What do you mean?' I said, 'I like (AJ) Dybantsa. I like (Darryn) Peterson. There was no player I would have taken before Caleb Wilson. Not one.' Lamar Jackson shares the expectations of those who believe the Baltimore Ravens can contend for a Super Bowl. He is no longer interested in discussing those projections without results. Baltimore entered last season widely viewed as one of the NFL's most talented teams. The Ravens instead finished 8-9 and missed the postseason, providing Jackson with a direct response to another offseason of championship predictions.
"We were just 8-9," Jackson said on "The Lounge" podcast. "We were talking about it, but we didn't produce. So why talk about it? We've got to be about it."
Jackson still expects Baltimore to compete for the championship. His focus has shifted toward the daily work required to reach February rather than the destination itself.
"It starts now," Jackson said. "It starts each and every week. It doesn't just happen in February. We have to get there first."
That process includes improvement in meetings, practice, recovery and situational football. Jackson pointed to a recent training-camp practice in which the Ravens began and finished poorly. He viewed it as an opportunity to correct a pattern that has hurt Baltimore during previous seasons. The lesson was reinforced by Baltimore's playoff loss to Tennessee following the 2019 regular season. The Ravens entered that game with a 14-2 record and considerable expectations but fell behind early and never recovered.

In a recent report, Tuttosport mentioned that Liverpool are showing interest in Juventus winger Francisco Conceicao. It has been mentioned that the Reds are prepared to launch a €50m move to sign the Portuguese wide player this off-season.

While their roster is better than it was at the end of the year, they could still bring in talented players who could help take them to the next level. On Monday, a new name hit the market, as Tampa Bay Buccaneers defensive lineman Vita Vea requested a trade.
Every team in the league could benefit from adding a player like Vea, but former NFL linebacker Emmanuel Acho believes that Vea landing in San Francisco would make them legitimate Super Bowl contenders.

So far, so good for San Francisco 49ers rookie wide receiver De'Zhaun Stribling. We're reading about Stribling impressing early in training camp, making big plays downfield or creating yards after the catch by turning underneath routes into 20+ yard receptions. Stribling is performing like the player he was drafted to be.
Brock Purdy is noticing the rookie. On Monday, Purdy said, "Dude is a baller, and I mean that. It's hard to say that for a rookie, right off the jump, but just seeing him run routes, going up against defenders in OTAs and then in camp yesterday. He's a great route runner. He's smart. He's learned the playbook really quick, which is awesome.
And then, on top of that, you can see his strength, too. When he's going up against guys and creating separation, I'm like, 'Alright, this guy's a strong receiver.' And so, I'm excited to see what he does, but all of us, all the quarterbacks in the room, were like, 'Alright, this guy's going to be the guy that's going to come in and play.'"
Stribling returned the compliments to Purdy, calling him a "Very talented guy, very talented guy, great leader." Stribling continued: Just being out there with him, how he conducts the whole offense, keeps everyone in check, gives everyone their ****** ignment. BLOOMINGTON — Indiana football led the Big Ten with three players on the conference's annual preseason honors list.
Hoosiers defensive tackle Tyrique Tucker, wide receiver Charlie Becker and linebacker Rolijah Hardy made the 12-member team, as voted on by the media.
Tucker, the lone JMU transfer left on coach Curt Cignetti's roster, will be in Chicago this week representing IU for Big Ten Media Days. He jumped into the starting lineup last year and earned All-American honors, while anchoring one of the most disruptive defensive fronts in the country. Hardy, who started last year as well, led the Hoosiers in tackles (102) and sacks (8.0).

Programs that previously had almost no chance of making the playoffs now have a realistic path. That became clear over the past two seasons, as Indiana, SMU, Boise State, Tulane and James Madison all reached the CFP for the first time. Their success showed that winning games, capturing a conference ***** le and building a strong resume can now be enough to earn a playoff spot.
Even with those first-time teams making the field, several well-known programs are still waiting for their CFP debut. The Rams were among the favorites for Super Bowl LXIII before they traded for Myles Garrett in June and acquiring the defensive player of the year has only pushed expectations for the coming season higher in Los Angeles.
Head coach Sean McVay acknowledged those expectations at the start of training camp while noting that "there's a lot of stuff in the midst of the journey that we don't control." McVay wants the Rams to prioritize the things they do control when it comes to preparing for the season and quarterback Matthew Stafford was in a similar frame of mind when he spoke to reporters on Monday.
Stafford said he wants the team to focus on improving their baseline level of play rather than thinking about how high they can climb if everything falls into place.
"We can't help but make each other better, [but] pieces of paper and names on a roster, those don't win football games," Stafford said, via Greg Beacham of the ******* ociated Press. "Teams and players and groups do. . . . Sean said it the other night, we've got potentially a high ceiling, right? We've got great players that have done a lot in this league. What can we do to continue to raise our floor, so if I'm off a little bit, we can still go find a way to win a football game? If our defense is off a little bit, we can still find a way to go win a football game. Continuing to raise that floor is something that's going to be a huge part of our journey this season."
There are a number of ways that a talented team can get thrown off track over the course of an NFL season. The work that Stafford and the Rams do now can't eliminate all of them, but anything they can do to pare that number down will help them weather the inevitable curveballs that come their way over the next few months.

Nebraska men's basketball will take on the Kansas State Wildcats in an exhibition game in Grand Island, Nebraska. The game will take place on October 26 and will be hosted at Elhusen Arena.
The Huskers and Wildcats have met fairly recently. They played back in November, and the Huskers won a thrilling 86-85 game. Kansas State leads the all-time regular-season series by a 129-95 margin. That being said, the Huskers currently have a two-game winning streak.
The Cornhuskers are coming off a magical 2025-26 season. They went 28-7, including 15-5 in the Big Ten. The Wildcats went 12-20 and 3-15 in the Big 12. It was a tale of two seasons for both programs, as Nebraska had one of the best seasons in program history.
The Huskers have a talented roster, led by the return of Pryce Sandfort. It will be exciting to see what they can do against the Wildcats, with the regular season looming.

Eintracht Frankfurt's previously reported signing of Brazilian centre back Otávio has been officially confirmed. South Korea international Kang-In Lee has joined Atletico Madrid from European champions Paris Saint-Germain, the Spanish club announced Saturday.
"Atletico de Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain have reached an agreement for the transfer of Kang-In Lee, who has signed for our club until June 30, 2031," said the Spanish club.
"A talented left-footed midfielder, the 25-year-old can operate in the attacking midfield role or from either wing, and stands out for his vision, exquisite ball control and ability to pass and shoot," said his new club.

As someone who observes sports more from a cultural angle than a technical one, I admit I find most of the fun of televised competition to be the emotion and drama of it all (besides the whole "who's going to win" element). I also only learned that "ESPY" stands for "Excellence in Sports Performance Yearly" last night. I still had an amazing time.
Here's what I observed as an in-person attendee at the ESPYs that you might not have picked up during the televised broadcast on ESPN.
When I arrived at the theater for the red carpet, the air was heavy with wildfire smoke and the humidity of an impending deluge. Sure enough, it poured. The nasty summer storm cost everyone about an hour of interview time, but fortunately, I got to spend that time indoors chatting with Yahoo's correspondent for the night: Jazzy, a delightfully brilliant 16-year-old journalist. We spent a while fantasizing about the snacks we wished we had brought, and she recommended I try putting Flamin' Hot Cheetos in the freezer for 15 minutes, which I will be doing next time I anticipate being grumpy and impatient.

In case one has missed it, LeBron James is now a member of the Philadelphia 76ers. He will be joining a roster with Tyrese Maxey, VJ Edgecombe. Jaylen Brown, and Joel Embiid already featured while also having some serious depth with Dean Wade, Anfernee Simons, Labaron Philon Jr., and others. This is a roster as talented as any in the Eastern Conference.
The Sixers got James on a 2-year $8 million deal as they only had so much money left to spend in free agency. After playing the waiting game to make it work and bring him in on a deal, the Sixers were able to come out as the big winners of the offseason, if they weren't already.
