SEYMOUR - An inadvertent whistle by a game official with under two minutes played in the game sealed an incredibly unusual 6-0 victory for the Ansonia football team over Seymour Thursday night at DeBarber Field.
With Ansonia clinging to its marginal lead, Chargers running back Jacob Branch took a handoff, got stood up from a Seymour defender and then continued to churn away, getting stripped of the ball in the process.
The Seymour players began celebrating as Ronan Carboni scooped up the loose ball at the Ansonia 19-yard line. Then a little bit of confusion and chaos ensued.
The game officials huddled on the field and after significant discussion determined that the whistle had been blown when Branch was first stood up, because the official near the Ansonia sideline felt his forward progress had been halted.
The Chargers maintained possession of the ball, and ultimately ran out the clock to seal the victory.
