Rangers news: Jacob deGrom hits historic low point after bullpen meltdown vs. Mariners appeared first on ClutchPoints. Add ClutchPoints as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
Jacob deGrom had misfortune strike him once again in the Texas Rangers' clash against the Seattle Mariners on Thursday evening.
DeGrom is going through the 13th season of his career in the majors, his fourth with the Rangers. He typically shines as one of the best pitchers in the league, ****** isting Texas in their race for a playoff spot.
DeGrom was having a strong performance on the mound, serving in six innings. He struck out 12 batters while conceding a single hit but left the game due to injury. This ended up being costly for Texas as Seattle rallied back to secure the win, making history in the modern era, via OptaStats.

Rangers news: Jacob deGrom's strong start ends with concerning injury update appeared first on ClutchPoints. Add ClutchPoints as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
Texas Rangers star pitcher Jacob deGrom pitched well on Thursday against the Seattle Mariners. However, he was removed after throwing 92 pitches through six innings, a decision that Rangers manager Skip Schumaker later said was due to an injury concern, via Kennedi Landry of MLB.com.
"Skip Schumaker said that Jacob deGrom was dealing with groin tightness through much of his start today. That's what the mound visit was about in the sixth and that's also why he didn't come back out for the seventh," Landry reported.
deGrom was indeed terrific while on the mound despite battling groin tightness throughout the outing. The veteran right-hander struck out 12 Mariners through six innings while allowing no runs and only one hit. Disaster struck following deGrom's departure from the contest, as Jakob Junis allowed four runs. The Rangers were defeated 4-3, a loss that dealt a blow to a team that is competing for a postseason spot.

So often pitchers' duels don't really stand up to the hype, but today's matchup between two former Stetson Hatters – the Mariners' Logan Gilbert and the Rangers' Jacob deGrom – delivered on all that promise and then some. The two pitchers combined for 23 strikeouts, and deGrom carried a perfect game through five innings. In true pitching duel style, it looked like the pitcher who blinked first would come out on the short end, but despite Logan Gilbert making a couple of mistakes, his offense was able to pick him up and deliver him the win. Bragging rights are fun; wins are better. (Gilbert also gets the honor of leading MLB in whiffs today: 24 to deGrom's 20, despite having one fewer strikeout than deGrom.)
This all being said, it was a slog for the Mariners early on. The best at-bat the first time through the order for the Mariners went to – surprise, surprise – Cal Raleigh, who battled deGrom for nine pitches before striking out on deGrom's fastest fastball of the day, a 99.6 mph heater (my campaign for decimal points on the ribbon board in the stadium, which read 100, continues unabated). But the Mariners did fight deGrom, getting themselves into good counts and forcing him into the zone; he finished the second inning at 37 pitches, compared to Gilbert's 24.
But it only took two pitches to offset that work in the third. Nicky Lopez was able to take 96 up and in from Gilbert and find a hole on the infield, and one batter later, with two outs, Joc Pederson jumped a first-pitch slider for a two-run homer. It wasn't a terrible pitch from Gilbert, away from Pederson but probably still too much on the plate; Gilbert had struck Pederson out on the slider in his first at-bat. The slider was particularly nasty today, with an eye-popping 75% whiff rate. He led with the pitch, throwing it 40 times, 12 times to start off an at-bat, which feels like a different sequence than he's used. Gilbert credits Cal for coming up with a good game plan, especially after he felt like he fell into some predictable patterns in his last time out against the A's.
"Like with Joc, we got him with the slider early, so he probably thought we were going to it next time," explained Gilbert. "But then also other guys, we went heavy spin, like with Duran, and then next time went three or four straight fastballs. So I think we did a good job there. They're trying to look at how we're probably scouting them, and then next time through, maybe pitch them different. I think Cal did a good job there."
But deGrom was just as tough on the other side. After striking out eight times in the first three innings, the Mariners hitters decided to try a different strategy the second time through the order. That also didn't work, as they let deGrom cruise through the fourth on nine pitches, keeping his perfect game intact.

It's been over a month since the trade deadline came and went and we're still getting information on a trade that never actually happened. The Atlanta Braves and Texas Rangers were very close to getting a deal done that would bring Jacob deGrom to Atlanta but until today, we didn't know who or what Atlanta would be sending in return. The deal got close enough to where it came down to deGrom making a decision with his no-trade clause and that's why he's still in Texas, so we know that the Braves had agreed to trade someone away.
It appears that one of the "who's" would've been Spencer Strider. Mark Feinsand of MLB.com wrote an article about players across baseball who could be on the move via trade in the offseason and one of the names that came up was Strider. Feinsand wasted no time in sharing the details from the trade that never was:
The Braves discussed sending Strider to Texas in a contract swap trade for Jacob deGrom before the Trade Deadline, and although deGrom blocked the deal with his no-trade clause, it's clear that Atlanta is open to moving its former ace.
Feinsand also noted that while the Braves are holding out hope that Strider could help out in the Postseason coming out of the bullpen, they are also keeping their options open and could be trying to find a suitor who believes that they can get Strider back to where he was before while taking some talent for their farm system as well.
Either way, it's definitely intriguing to see that this is where the Braves are at with Strider at this point. If you woke up from a coma in 2022 to learn that the Braves could be shopping Spencer Strider around, you might've figured that it was because his contract demands were too large since he had become such a dominant force on the mound. Instead, Strider has struggled with injuries and inconsistent performances when healthy and the outlook has changed significantly for Strider.

Despite his many injuries, Jacob deGrom is one of the most dominant pitchers in MLB history.
He proved that again on Thursday night, stifling the Washington Nationals in the Texas Rangers' 2-0 victory. deGrom was dealing, racking up 10 strikeouts over six innings of one-hit ball and improving to 9-8 with a 3.77 ERA.
The 10 punchouts raised his career total to 2,008, making him the second-fastest pitcher in MLB history to reach 2,000 K's in terms of both games and innings. Only Randy Johnson pitched fewer games and only Chris Sale threw fewer innings.

Over the entire history of MLB, fewer than 100 pitchers have struck out 2,000 batters in a career. Texas Rangers starter Jacob deGrom became the latest member of that elite club Thursday, hitting the milestone in the top of the first inning against the Washington Nationals.
DeGrom struck out Daylen Lile swinging to begin the game. He then struck out Abimelec Ortiz on five pitches, with a 92.6-mph slider sending the first baseman swinging to hit the milestone.
It marks a significant accomplishment for deGrom, who has been one of the most dominant pitchers in the game since his debut in 2014 with the New York Mets.
Despite never being listed as a top-100 prospect, deGrom exceeded all expectations early. As a rookie, he posted a 2.69 ERA over 140 1/3 innings, striking out 144 batters. That performance was good enough to earn him the National League Rookie of the Year award.
DeGrom continued to post excellent seasons with the Mets, but he really took his game up a level in 2018. That season, he led the majors with an astounding 1.70 ERA over 217 innings. His strikeout rate surged, helping earn him his first Cy Young award. DeGrom was similarly dominant in 2019, posting a 2.43 ERA over 204 innings and leading baseball with 255 strikeouts. That performance earned him back-to-back Cy Youngs.

Texas Rangers lineup for August 20, 2026 against the Washington Nationals: starting pitchers are Jacob deGrom for the Rangers and Andrew Alvarez for the Nationals.
It is the series finale, and the Rangers will be trying to clinch the series with a win. Jacob deGrom, who left his start a week ago today with triceps tightness, is on the mound for Texas. The Rangers are using the same lineup they used Tuesday, when they scored runs, and not the lineup from Wednesday, when they did not score runs.
The lineup:
Langford — DH
Seager — SS

The Texas Rangers have recalled infielder Cody Freeman and purchased the contract of Marco Gonzales from AAA Round Rock. To make room on the active roster for the pair, the team has optioned infielder Cam Cauley and pitcher Ben Peoples to AAA Round Rock. To make room for Gonzales on the 40 man roster, the Rangers designated pitcher Luis Curvelo for ***** ignment.
After Jacob deGrom went just two innings yesterday, the Rangers need someone in the pen who can give them length. Peoples has options so he goes down, and Gonzales returns to the Rangers for his second stint with the club this season.
The motivation behind the decision to swap out Cody Freeman for Cam Cauley isn't quite as clear. Freeman was in the mix for an Opening Day roster spot, but has missed much of the year do to back and neck issues. The Rangers reportedly like the energy that Freeman brings, however, and with the lineup currently feeling very flat, it may be that he's viewed as being able to provide a shot in the arm.
Curvelo, meanwhile, will end up on the waiver wire, and I'm guessing he'll clear waivers. He has regressed from last year, with a 9.58 major league ERA and 8.42 AAA ERA, and has been both wild and homer ***** e.

I know what you're thinking. Fridays against the Nationals at Citi Field. Isn't that a bit of a narrow category for a "best of" list? That's a tremendously fair point, but for whatever reason, it seems a disproportionate number of the most memorable games in recent Mets history have come on Fridays against the Nats — whether jumpstarting hot streaks, announcing the arrival of new stars, or simply providing a moment of joy in otherwise bleak times.
There are a variety of good options to choose from, as the Mets have won six of their last eight and 14 of their last 22 Friday contests at home against Washington. I've selected a quartet that I believe stand above the rest as true classics. With another weekend series with the Nats upon us in 2026, it felt fitting to revisit the unique circumstances that led to these games, the actual on-field events that went down, and the legacy they've left behind. So without further ado, here are the top Friday nights at Citi Field vs. the Nats (so far):
4. deGame – April 23, 2021
Setting the scene: After over 18 months of covid-induced absence (not counting cardboard cutouts), fans were finally back in the stands at Citi Field — but things weren't exactly back to normal. Seating was **** ed out, tickets were limited, and the sport was settling into a transitional season before the expanded playoffs and universal DH, after the automatic extra-inning runner, with seven-inning doubleheaders and mounting concern about "sticky stuff." But the Mets had promise, fresh off the acquisition and long-term extension of Francisco Lindor, out to a respectable 8-7 start, and featuring a two-time Cy Young Award winner who only seemed to get better with age. Thus far in 2021, Jacob deGrom held a 0.45 ERA with 35 strikeouts and three walks over three starts. As he warmed up in the bullpen before this Friday night start against the Nationals (only the seventh home game and third home night game since fans returned to the stadium), he felt so good that it made him "a little nervous." So we have a small but remarkably hungry crowd of 8,130 fans starved for something good to cheer, and a one-of-one ace nervous about just how good he might be. Sounds like a pretty good recipe.
Play ball: deGrom set the tone with a three-pitch strikeout of leadoff hitter Andrew Stevenson, each offering coming in at over 99 mph. One would think it could only get better for the Nats from that point on, but…not exactly. After five innings, they had struck out nine times and reached base only twice (on a well-placed grounder and a misplayed fly ball). The game was still scoreless, but that changed in the bottom of the frame when deGrom himself came to bat against Erick Fedde, slashing an RBI double to left and later scoring on a single by Brandon Nimmo.

ARLINGTON, Texas — Missing: The Baltimore Orioles' offense, last seen before the trade deadline.
Another night of frustrating results at the plate was to be expected Saturday with Jacob deGrom on the mound for the Texas Rangers. Yet despite driving his pitch count up enough to force Texas to go to its bullpen after five innings, the Orioles still struggled to string together any kind of rally in a 5-1 loss to the Rangers.
It's the Orioles' third straight game with one run or fewer and fifth in their past seven overall.
The loss ensured Baltimore (56-61) would lose its series in Arlington and drop the club to three games back in the American League wild-card race.
A solo home run by Jackson Holliday off deGrom in the first inning was the only run the Orioles pushed across. They had six hits and drew three walks but finished 0 for 3 with runners in scoring position to strand six men on base.

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Jacob deGrom struck out nine over five innings for his first victory in more than a month and the Texas Rangers beat Baltimore 5-1 on Saturday night for their fourth consecutive victory.
The Rangers (59-58) moved back over .500 with the winning streak since a season-worst six-game losing streak that knocked them out of the AL West lead.
Texas went ahead to stay with two unearned runs in the second inning, on two infield singles and two throwing errors. Corey Seager hit a three-run homer in the eighth.
It was the first start for deGrom (8-7) since he told the Rangers before last Monday's trade deadline that he wanted to stay in Texas. At least one contending team inquired about the two-time Cy Young Award winner who has a full no-trade clause in his contract
The right-hander struck out half of the 18 batters he faced and walked one while throwing 88 pitches (55 strikes). He had gone 0-2 while allowing 13 earned runs in 18 innings his previous four starts since a win June 30 at Cleveland.

The Orioles are back on national television for the second straight game. Last night was Apple TV. Tonight, it's FOX. Perhaps it is my own neurosis, but it feels like the O's rarely do well on the big stage. Hopefully that isn't the case tonight.
If this team wants to stay close in the playoff race, they need to win these games with the Rangers. The short-term schedule will only get tougher with series against the Rays and Yankees looming.
Kyle Bradish will be on the **** p. His last appearance was brief as the rain washed him out of the game against the Phillies on Sunday. He will be raring to go since he hasn't turned in a "good" start since July 22, when he held the Red Sox to one run over six innings.
Jacob deGrom starts for Texas. That isn't ideal for the Orioles. The veteran righty has dominated them in his career, to the tune of a 1.88 ERA over six starts. He has never taken a loss against the O's and has piled up 46 strikeouts over 38.1 innings against them.
Go get that win, fellas!

The Atlanta Braves' eight-game win streak came to an end on Friday after a 3-2 loss to the New York Yankees. Tyler Mahle, acquired just ahead of the trade deadline, made his Braves debut and was fantastic. In six scoreless innings, he allowed three hits, walked two, and struck out nine.
Though a terrific start from Mahle, the Braves' bats were quiet and the bullpen was unable to hang on, ultimately leading to the loss in extra innings.
The Braves aim to even things up this afternoon behind Chris Sale.
Cam Caminiti made his Double-A debut on Thursday and threw 5.1 innings. More in the minor league recap.
Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reported that the Braves were in on Jacob deGrom.

Braves miss out on elite pitcher trade thanks to Rangers' Jacob deGrom originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The Atlanta Braves came into this year's trade deadline needing to upgrade their starting rotation. It's been a banged-up unit, and they cannot rely on Chris Sale and the current options for a World Series run.
They wound up adding Tyler Mahle, but a true bona fide ace would've been a major upgrade for this club. Unfortunately, no such trade happened. But it wasn't for a lack of effort. In fact, it might not even be the Braves' fault that they missed on an ace.
According to Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic, the Braves made a serious push to acquire Jacob deGrom from the Texas Rangers. With the Rangers willing to make such a trade, the only reason it fell through was thanks to deGrom and his no-trade clause.
"The Braves informed the Rangers of their desire to land deGrom, according to people briefed on the discussions who were offered anonymity for their candor," Rosenthal reports. "The Rangers told deGrom if he wanted to waive his no-trade clause for Atlanta, they would make a deal happen, source said, but deGrom said no, explaining that he wanted to win in Texas."

Good morning.
Shawn McFarland writes that the Texas Rangers played the team that perhaps sold most at the deadline and they committed five errors while nearly getting shut out in their sixth consecutive loss.
Jeff Wilson writes that there was plenty of buzz about how the Rangers would tackle the trade deadline yesterday only for them to not do much of anything at all (which also wasn't surprising).
Evan Grant notes that the big move was ditching Josh Smith to a selling Toronto for left-handed pitcher Adam Macko.
Kennedi Landry writes that Jacob deGrom could have been dealt but, thanks to a no-trade clause, he decided to stay in Texas.

Everybody called San Diego to ask about Mason Miller. **** ody got him.
The Padres spent Monday buying two starting pitchers instead. Miller is still in Southern California. Reid Detmers stayed with the Los Angeles Angels while the roster came apart around him. Trevor Rogers remained in Baltimore after the Orioles moved their franchise catcher. George Springer stayed in Toronto because his contract says he doesn't have to go anywhere. Nathan Eovaldi, Jacob deGrom and Corey Seager told the Rangers they weren't leaving Texas.
These were guys who came up in multiple rumors and who would have moved the needle for a contender, but they did not end up switching uniforms.
Here's the best players who were not traded at the 2026 MLB trade deadline:

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Two-time Cy Young Award winner Jacob deGrom told the Texas Rangers before Monday's trade deadline that he wanted to stay with the team.
"I want to be here. I believe in this group," deGrom said.
The right-hander, who has a full no-trade clause in his contract, addressed reports that the slumping Rangers were approached by at least one other club about his availability.
Asked if Texas presented anything specific to him about a potential deal, the 38-year-old deGrom said he wouldn't get into any details.
The Rangers went into Monday night's series opener at home against San Francisco mired in a season-worst five-game losing streak that knocked them out of first place in the AL West. They were swept in a three-game series at Houston over the weekend, going from a half-game division lead to 2 1/2 games behind the Astros.

Essential to the Houston Astros' revival has been a resurgent bullpen. No relief corps in the majors had a higher ERA through May 21, the start of this team's slow turnaround. Entering Saturday, only one owned a lower mark since that date, a stretch in which the Astros were tied for the best record in the American League.
Extending their newfound lead in the AL West hinged on that unit again Saturday evening. Five relievers combined to throw 4⅓ innings of one-run ball as the Astros secured a 5-4 win over the Texas Rangers, moved 1½ games up in the division and ensured they will finish this series between in-state rivals alone in first place.
Houston has won 10 of its last 11 games and is 57-55, a timely push two days before the trade deadline. Outfield offense and pitching are its two priorities, in that order. Contributions from those areas on the current roster buoyed a fifth consecutive victory Saturday, matching the club's longest winning streak of the season.
Third baseman won't rule out a return this season
LaMonte Wade Jr. and Taylor Trammell, two of the Astros' left-handed hitting outfielders, drove in three of the five runs they scored against Rangers starter Jacob deGrom. With a 5-3 lead, the Astros turned to their bullpen with two outs in the fifth inning, lifting starter Ronel Blanco with a runner on and starting a series of maneuvers.

Jacob deGrom lasted only 3 1/3 innings and allowed five runs in a 5-4 loss to the Astros, and the Texas Rangers have lost four straight games ahead of the trade deadline.
HOUSTON — On the day he reached 10 years of MLB service time, a benchmark all players strive to reach, Brandon Nimmo told his Texas Rangers teammates that he's playing for more.
Not more seasons, though those will come, but more playoff opportunities, including the one that has somehow presented itself this season. Nimmo will celebrate 10 years later, he said, hopefully with champagne after the Rangers clinch a playoff spot.
Of more immediate concern is winning ballgames and the trade deadline. Nimmo said he was "worried" about that, wondering how everything is going to shake out across the league and on his own team.
He can't control what happens between now and Monday. He can control some of what happens on the field, and things aren't going particularly well for the Rangers and his longtime baseball buddy Jacob deGrom.

TONIGHT'S GAME: The first-place Astros will host their intrastate rivals, the Rangers, for the middle game of their huge three-game series between the top two teams in the AL West.
RHP Ronel Blanco (0-1) will make his third Major League start of the season tonight as he opposes RHP Jacob deGrom (7-6) and the Rangers.
SILVER BOOT SECURED: With last night's win, the Astros improved to 7-4 against the Rangers this season, securing them the 2026 Silver Boot.
The Astros have now won the Silver Boot in 10 consecutive seasons (since 2017), during which the Astros have gone 100-55 vs. the Rangers.
THE TURNAROUND: After a slow start to the season, the Astros are 36-24 since May 22, which ties as the best record in the AL in that span.

For years, we've come to expect the MLB All-Star Game to feature players who have perennially been among the best in the sport. We become accustomed to seeing the same names fill out the rosters. Guys like Justin Verlander, Max Scherzer, Jacob deGrom, Chris Sale, Jose Altuve, Mike Trout, and more. While some of those names are still here in Philadelphia, it feels like we're witnessing a little bit of a changing of the guard, particularly amongst the starting pitchers.
This year's All-Star rosters had 26 first-time players selected, and 14 of the starting pitchers will be making their first or second appearance in the Midsummer Classic. Six of those starting pitchers (plus Paul Skenes, who is making his third appearance) are 26 years old or younger, and all of them, apart from Skenes, have made fewer than 35 career MLB starts. For comparison's sake, Chris Sale, who is also participating in the All-Star Game, has made 329 career starts (even with his litany of injuries).
"I think the game's changing, the game's getting younger," acknowledged Reds' starting pitcher Chase Burns, who is making his first career All-Star appearance. "I know it probably sucks to say that for older guys, but, you know, it's because of them that the game's gotten better."
That deference to the veterans was common amongst the young hurlers who were present at the All-Star game: "It's a good mix of older, veteran guys that we can learn from, and then a lot of hungry guys that are trying to make it back here every year and stay healthy," said Yankees' starter Cam Schlittler, who is also making his first All-Star appearance.
The "hungry" young guys that Schlittler talked about have been making their presence known this season. Among qualified starting pitchers, five of the top 10 starters in WAR are current All-Stars who are 26 years old or younger. Seven of the top 12 qualified starting pitchers in terms of strikeout rate are 26 years old or younger, including the Guardians' Gavin Williams and the Mets' Nolan McLean, who were not selected as All-Stars.

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Alejandro Osuna hit a three-run homer during a five-run eighth inning and the Texas Rangers pulled away for an 8-3 win over the Los Angeles Angels on Tuesday night.
Osuna’s first homer of the season followed RBI singles by Ezequiel Duran and Justin Foscue in the six-hit inning off Sam Bachman (1-2). Foscue also hit a pinch-hit home run in the seventh, tying the score 3-3.
Peyton Gray (4-0) pitched a scoreless eighth for the win for the Rangers, who pulled within one-half game of first-place Seattle in the AL West.
The last-place Angels have lost seven consecutive games, tying their longest losing streak of the season.
Rangers starter Jacob deGrom suffered first-inning struggles before settling in, his pattern this season. He allowed a pair of two-out runs in the first on Jorge Soler’s double that one-hopped the left field wall and Josh Lowe’s single to shallow left following a wild pitch.

CLEVELAND (AP) — Jacob deGrom pitched seven strong innings and the Texas Rangers took advantage of a bone-headed play by Cleveland rookie outfielder Cooper Ingle on Tuesday night to beat the Guardians 4-2 and extend their winning streak to six games.
DeGrom (7-5) allowed a two-run homer to Kyle Manzardo in the first before turning dominant. The right-hander gave up a leadoff single in the second before retiring 18 of the next 19 batters, improving to 4-0 in June.
Joc Pederson hit a two-run homer and Josh Jung added a solo shot as the AL West-leading Rangers improved to 7-2 on their road trip.
They got a big ****** ist in the seventh inning when Ingle, making just his second major league start in the outfield, lost track of the number of outs and tossed a live ball into the stands, allowing the Rangers to take a 3-2 lead.
With a runner at second and one out, Ingle caught a routine fly ball hit by Rangers left fielder Alejandro Osuna for the second out. Thinking it was the third out, Ingle looked at the ball in his glove before throwing it over the protective netting to fans.

Jacob deGrom and Tanner Bibee faced off in game two of the three game series. Both pitchers had great outings, with Bibee going a full seven innings of work. Bibee allowed five hits and struck out two batters. He did not walk a single batter. Bibee gave up three runs, two earned. Rookie Cooper Ingle lost track of the outs and gave up a costly two base error to account for the unearned run. Bibee fell to 2-9 on the season. Shawn Armstrong worked an inning, giving up a run on a solo homer. Daniel Espino had a clean inning of work, striking out two of the three batters faced. In the top of the ninth, Bazzana made a great stop to record the out.
The Guardians offense only recorded five hits on the night with Daniel Schneemann going 2-for-3 with a stolen base. The runs for Cleveland came early in the bottom of the first. Chase DeLauter hit a one-out double to center. Kyle Manzardo followed up with his tenth home run of the season.
A victory against deGrom will always be difficult and hard fought. It is, regrettably, unsurprising that the offense couldn’t get on and get home when they needed to. The unfortunate error and a solo shot were the nails in the coffin that is this series, and the season series, against the Rangers. Texas and Cleveland will play one more game tomorrow with a 1:10 PM EDT first pitch.
