San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan was originally reported to have not been at fault in his car crash earlier this month, but quickly told reporters he had caused the crash because he was reaching for his dropped cell phone.
That left an awkward question: If Shanahan was indeed at fault for the crash, why wasn't he cited by police in the aftermath of the crash?
A report from ESPN provided the answer on Thursday, with Palo Alto Police saying via statement that the citation decision came down to officer discretion and denying it was due to any sort of favoritism for the local NFL teams' head coach. They also said the other driver initially being labeled at fault in their database was due to an error.
From ESPN:
In a statement to ESPN, a police spokesperson said the attribution of fault to the other driver was the result of "a clerical error." And the responding officer exercised his discretion when determining whether to cite Shanahan.

We continue the countdown to the start of the Arizona Cardinals' regular season. Today, Wednesday, July 29, is 46 days away from the Arizona Cardinals' regular-season opener on Sept. 13 on the road against the Los Angeles Chargers.
With 46 days until Week 1, let's look back at the 1946 season for the Cardinals.
In 1946, the Cardinals didn't have a terrible season. They went 6-5, but that meant a third-place finish in the division. They never won or lost more than 2 games in a row.
In the 10-team league, they were third on offense, scoring 23.6 points per game, but they were sixth in poinst allowed, giving up 18.0 per game.
Quarterback Paul Christman led the Cardinals in passing. He passed for 1,656 yards, 13 touchdowns and 18 interceptions. He led the NFL, averaging 16.6 yards per completion.

Kasper Hogh, Celtic FC. Photo Celtic FC
Celtic today completed the signing of Danish International striker Kasper Hogh in a record breaking £11 million plus deal from Bodo/Glimt, leaving most of us delighted, but also a bit surprised as none of us, understandably so, had any faith in our hierarchy getting top quality deals over the line.
The striker who also played for Randers, Hobro, Aab, and Stabaek, in his homeland was a previously a player of serious interest in the eyes of Celtic, but unfortunately a deal didn't come to anything, due to a combination of our club's lackadaisical attitude towards recruitment, and Bodo Glimt's reluctance to sell due to their participation in the latter stages of the Champions League.
Hogh is a player of great ability, and it's a real sign of intent from Martin O'Neill, who has shown that he means business going into the forthcoming campaign.
The Danish centre forward is a player of proven quality as his record of 53 goals in 104 appearances for the forward thinking Norwegian side testifies.

The Miami Marlins (52-51) welcome the San Diego Padres (50-53) to South Beach this weekend. It is a crucial three-game set for both teams' playoff hopes. Each club has struggled following the All-Star break. The loser of this series will kiss their postseason chances goodbye.
The Padres fell short for a second consecutive day, as a late-game rally ended in a frustrating 6-5 defeat to the Atlanta Braves. The loss dropped them to 2-5 on their 10-game, three-city road trip.
The Friars began the scoring with a three-run rally off of Braves ace Chris Sale. A fielding error by left fielder Mauricio Dubón aided the offense, as it was followed by a bases-loaded walk to Fernando Tatis Jr. and a two-run single by Luis Renglio. But that lead was short-lived.
After Padres opener Kyle Hart pitched a scoreless first inning, Griffin Canning came into the contest as the bulk pitcher. His struggles continued with the first batter he faced. Michael Harris II homered on the second pitch of his at-bat. The Braves scored four more runs in the fourth inning, as Ozzie Albies hit a solo home run and Dominic Smith followed with a three-run blast.

Welcome to The Daily Merengue — a place where you can feel free to discuss all things football. Do not be alarmed by the overt RMCF bias. It's in the name!
Shoutout to the Mods who do a fantastic job, Valyrian Steel, Ezek XI, KungFuZizou, NeRObutBlanco, Felipejack, and Juninho.
Writer's Prelude. We'll keep today short.
More on Rodri. The saga continues with more reports regarding Rodri's potential to come to Real Madrid. With the official announcement of Eliot Anderson by City, I think we'll hear real news on Rodri by end of today. Either a true break of chance where Real will not buy Rodri or what at this point most suspect which is a pretty clear statement of intent and almost near official confirmation that the agreement will be sorted. I really don't expect this to take long.
Vini. Only really stating this because of the lack of news but as a reminder allegedly the club and Vini's entourage are supposed to meet regarding his renewal this or next week. There's been really no movement from my understanding + sources + journalists. Let's see if there is a swift conclusion.

A former Carolina Panthers quarterback could be on the doorstep of an NFL return.
According to Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston, Jack Plummer is set to work out for the San Francisco 49ers and the Miami Dolphins. Per Wilson, the 26-year-old passer will visit the 49ers on Friday and the Dolphins next week.
Plummer, a standout from the University of Louisville, began as pro career as an undrafted free agent with the Panthers back in 2024. He'd spend that year and the summer of 2025 in Carolina, making a total of six appearances during preseason play as the third-string quarterback.
After being waived by Carolina ahead of last season, Plummer eventually found his way to the United Football League. This past spring, he completed 65 percent of his passes for 2,188 yards, 17 touchdowns and just one interception—leading the Orlando Storm to a league-best 8-2 record and capturing the UFL's 2026 Most Valuable Player honors.

From the mountain range of Utah to the country roads of West Virginia and the bounce house in Orlando, the Big 12 has a wide arrange of stadiums that contribute to what makes college football so special.
Some of the most hallowed grounds in college football reside in the Big 12, with a great blend of history in stadiums more than a century old, to those that have struck fear in opponents the moment their feet touches the surface. Plus, the Big 12 may own the ****** le of having the most scenic backdrops that make for stunning visuals when taking in a game.
There is no correct way to rank stadiums, but there are several factors that go into them: tradition, aesthetics, gameday atmosphere and of course, home field advantage. Using a mix of it, this is where every Big 12 stadium ranks:
At 51,444 strong, Rice-Eccles Stadium stands alone as the best in the Big 12. Not only is it a picteresque stadium that hosted the 2002 Winter Olympic opening ceremonies, but it is a fearsome place to play for opponents. The Mighty Utah Student Section rocks the stands and its rare to have an empty seat. Utah is 47-13 at home since 2016, and somehow, the energy turns up if its a night game; the Utes are 29-6 under the lights in the past 10 seasons. All of it is why former Washington coach Chris Petersen said "it's what college football should be."

Good Vibes in the Kitzbühel Alps: Head coach Markus Högner painted a positive picture of the BVB Women following their week-long training camp: “The conditions here are excellent. We’ve developed a playbook and are working on our principles both offensively and defensively.” On the well-maintained training fields in Austria, Markus Högner noted the team’s exceptional dedication, and he added that they were also having plenty of fun during recreational activities—which are especially important for integrating the seven new signings.
After just two training sessions, the BVB Women kicked off their summer preparations with a 5–2 friendly win against Eintracht Frankfurt II. Three new signings—Lara Schmidt, Ramona Maier, and Jacqueline Meißner—all scored in their first appearance for the Black and Yellows. Ahead of the friendly against Bundesliga promoted side Mainz 05, the head coach explained: “During the first week of training, there was still too much initial frantic activity in some situations. We’re improving from session to session and are looking forward to a hard-fought test against the Mainz women.”
A perfect start for the Black and Yellows: Markus Högner’s team came out determined and started energetically at the Hopfgarten sports field. The early stages were dominated by a confident BVB Women team, which was awarded its second corner kick as early as the seventh minute. After a set piece taken by Rita Schumacher, the ball found its way to Alex Popp, who clinically headed home her first chance of the game to give BVB a 1-0 lead (7th minute)—her debut goal for the Black and Yellows! Just three minutes later, the BVB Women were awarded a penalty kick. Rita Schumacher, last season’s top scorer, stepped up and slotted the ball into the right corner to make it 2–0 (10th minute).
There was no sign of the pace slowing down: The early one-two punch served as a wake-up call for the Mainz women, who pulled one back in the 21st minute after a long ball found striker Fetaj’s head. And the action continued in quick succession. On one end, goal-scorer Alex Popp was in exactly the right spot on a set piece, but her second header hit only the crossbar. In the immediate counterattack, Mainz 05 shifted gears and tied the game at 2–2 (28th minute) through Leonie Stöhr, who tapped in a cross from two meters out.
In the back-and-forth offensive exchange between the two teams, the BVB Women found another answer. Sixty seconds after the equalizer: Ramona Maier finished off a pinpoint through ball from Noreen Günnewig with a one-touch finish into the left corner to regain the lead—3–2 in the 29th minute. For Maier, who joined BVB from SGS Essen this summer, it was already her second goal in her second game for the BVB Women.

At a glance the best thing the Atlanta Falcons have going for them is having a lot of young talent on their roster, particularly on the offensive side of the football. It seems not everyone agrees with that **** ysis, though.
Even though they have some very promising young contributors on their roster, ESPN has only ranked the Falcons 22nd in their annual list of each team's under-25 talent. It is worth mentioning that a bunch of the team's best players are exactly 25 years old or are about to be.
"Atlanta's top offensive stars are 25 or close to it. Pitts turned 25 in October. London will be 25 on Friday. Robinson will turn 25 in late January, so he's the only one of the three players who still qualifies... The other offensive player worth mentioning is rookie wide receiver Zachariah Branch, who is 22. Then it's all about the defense. Rookie cornerback Avieon Terrell is just 21. Edge rushers James Pearce Jr. and Walker are both 22. (We docked the Falcons a bit based on the possibility that Pearce will need to serve some sort of suspension for off-field legal issues.)"
When you consider Pitts and London being 25 and taking points off for Pearce's TBD suspension it's probably fair to rank Atlanta as below-average in this category. However, the Falcons were also ranked 22nd on this list last season, which just doesn't make much sense.
We really don't have any theories as to why Atlanta keeps getting shafted in ESPN's lists - you might recall their starting lineup was recently ranked 29th in the NFL.

There’s plenty of competition, with no Arab clubs on the horizon.
At least for now. Nicolo Tresoldi, however, has given his priority to Gasperini’s Roma and is expecting a significant signal in the coming days.
The Italian-German striker has already reached a financial agreement with Roma and expressed his full approval of Gasperini’s project.
What’s missing? An offer to Club Brugge, of course, writes La Gazzetta dello Sport.
The Summerville saga has absorbed all of sporting director D’Amico’s energy, but in the coming days, a move for Tresoldi is expected to accelerate.

Real Madrid striker Gonzalo García is now expected to stay at the club past this summer, having performed at a high level during the first few training sessions under José Mourinho, according to a report from COPE's Arancha Rodríguez.
Gonzalo was rumored to be on his way out of the club, with several teams interested in his signing. However, the coaching staff made the decision to keep him as Gonzalo's profile as a striker could be useful throughout the season. The current roster lacks a target man and Mourinho has always valued that kind of role, so Gonzalo will likely have some minutes this upcoming year, even if he will be expected to come off the bench almost every game.
Mourinho, his coaching staff and the board will still have to make some important decisions regarding the future of players like Mastantuono, Brahim or Asencio.

Italian champions Inter Milan are in active negotiations to sign Tottenham Hotspur full-back Djed Spence, but are only willing to pay up to €30 million (£25.6 million) for his services. Roberto De Zerbi is at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. The Serie A giants have made the 25-year-old Englishman a top summer target, but face a significant hurdle as Spurs are holding out for a considerably higher fee.
Inter had previously agreed a €30 million deal for Union Saint-Gilloise wing-back Anan Khalaili. However, the Israeli international failed his medical with Italian authorities, prompting Inter President Beppe Marotta to pull the plug on the transfer. Looking for an immediate replacement for Denzel Dumfries—who departed for Real Madrid earlier this summer—Inter have now turned their attention to Spence.
For Spence, interest from the Nerazzurri caps an impressive career resurgence. After underwhelming loan spells at Leeds United and Bologna, the 'outstanding' defender returned to Hotspur Way and completely revitalised his career. Over the past two seasons, Spence has made 79 appearances across all competitions. His performances earned him an England call-up for the 2026 FIFA World Cup in North America, where he has featured in all six matches so far.
However, Spence's rapid rise has complicated transfer negotiations. Tottenham are well aware of the defender's surging profile. While Inter's budget for this operation is capped at the €30 million initially set aside for Khalaili, Spurs' hierarchy are holding out for a significantly higher package.
Spurs are under no pressure to sell on the cheap, with domestic rivals Everton also monitoring Spence's situation.

Manchester United confirmed the transfer of Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa on Tuesday, unveiling the player with the new No. 18 shirt after a move worth around £35m.
The Belgium international spend the summer in the United States at the 2026 World Cup before his team’s elimination against Spain last week. He then traveled to Manchester to complete his move to Old Trafford on a five-year contract.
“It’s hard to describe just how proud I am to join Manchester United. Signing for such a special club feels incredible. It is the culmination of years of dedication since I first fell in love with football,” Tielemans said in a club press release. “I have had the privilege of experiencing success in the game and it has only increased my determination to achieve more. The ambition from everyone at the club is extremely clear; we are all determined to push for the biggest trophies over the coming years.”
Tielemans joined Aston Villa on a free transfer from Leicester City in 2023 and played in 93 Premier League matches over three full seasons in Birmingham. He scored a goal in the team’s UEFA Europa League victory at the end of last season to secure the only major trophy from his time with the Villains.
In total, Tielemans has more than seven years of experience playing in the PL.

Brighton head coach Fabian Hurzeler says the Seagulls have followed Luka Vuskovic's "fantastic start to his career" and are looking forward to helping him break into the Premier League now that his transfer is complete.
Vuskovic, who has signed from Tottenham on a five-year-deal, spent last season on loan at Hamburg and was named in the Bundesliga team of the year.
The 19-year-old has six senior caps for Croatia and started against England in the opening group match of the World Cup.
"Luka has enjoyed a fantastic start to his career - it's one we've followed closely," said Hurzeler. "Last season, he demonstrated he can play at a very high level and we want to help him build on that within our environment.
"There's been a lot of external noise about Luka joining us, but he is still a young guy who will need time to adjust to the demands of playing for Brighton and the Premier League.

ESPN has been releasing their top-10 player lists at every position.
In a separate list conducted by the outlet, they named New York Jets defensive tackle T'Vondre Sweat as the team's potential breakout candidate in 2026. They also named former Jets defender Leonard Williams the No. 1 defensive tackle in the NFL.
"Williams had never previously cracked the top five since this project's inception in 2020," NFL insider Jeremy Fowler wrote. "But he has always been a major talent, and he has maximized his contributions over the past two years in Seattle coach Mike Macdonald's defense."
The Jets selected Williams with the No. 6 overall selection in the 2015 NFL draft. The former USC standout played out a five-year rookie contract with the Jets, including a fifth-year option. Midway through his final season, instead of signing him to a contract extension, the Jets traded him to the New York Giants in exchange for a 2020 third-round pick and a 2021 fifth-round pick.
The Jets did not get terrific value back for a defensive tackle who is still considered a top-three player at his position more than five years later. The Jets used that 2020 third-round pick on safety Ashtyn Davis. The fifth-round pick was utilized on fellow safety Michael Carter II. Both players were multi-year contributors, but came nowhere near matching Williams' impact.

The best teams around the NFL tend to double down on their roster strengths, turning good units into dominant ones over time as they develop into championship contenders.
Although the Carolina Panthers' roster still has a ton of work to do before they join that conversation, they have at least a couple of spots that are starting to look awfully good compared to the competition.
Let's review each position group on the Panthers' roster right now, ranking them from best to worst going into 2026.
The Panthers are paying for the most expensive offensive line in the league this year, and they should be getting their money's worth.
This offseason, general manager Dan Morgan went out of his way to upgrade this unit's depth—bulking up the blindside by signing former Green Bay Packers left tackle Rasheed Walker and drafting Georgia’s Monroe Freeling with this year’s 19th overall pick. He also added veteran Luke Fortner and fifth-rounder Sam Hecht at center.

LAWRENCE — Kansas baseball just saw Mathis Nayral be selected No. 402 overall in the 2026 MLB Draft, with him becoming the fourth player from the program to be picked this year.
The Toronto Blue Jays picked Nayral, a junior right-handed pitcher for the Jayhawks this past season, in the 13th round. Nayral arrived as a transfer from Cochise College, and became another junior college addition that's played well for coach Dan Fitzgerald at KU. With the Jayhawks, Nayral enjoyed a season that saw the program win the Big 12 Conference's regular season and tournament ******* les before going on to with the Lawrence Regional in the NCAA tournament.
RELATED: Kansas baseball 2026 MLB Draft tracker: Where KU players are picked
Nayral, whose season with Kansas ended in a NCAA super regional in Lawrence, finished with a 4.96 ERA across 17 starts and 18 appearances. He had a 4-3 record. He also had 71 strikeouts across 69 innings pitched.
Nayral follows junior infielder/outfielder Tyson LeBlanc being drafted by Detroit in the seance round, junior right-handed pitcher Dominic Voegele being drafted by Baltimore in the third round and junior infielder/outfielder Brady Ballinger being drafted by Detroit in the seventh round. It's an impressive run for a Kansas team that's raised the level of expectations in Lawrence quite a bit in recent years. Now, Nayral has the chance to pursue a professional career.

LAS VEGAS — The ending wasn't what anyone envisioned.
After years of anticipation, countless promotional tours and one of the biggest fight weeks the UFC has staged, the long-awaited rematch between Max Holloway and Conor McGregor lasted just 69 seconds Saturday night at T-Mobile Arena. McGregor injured his right leg almost immediately, tried unsuccessfully to continue and the referee waved off the welterweight main event, awarding Holloway a first-round TKO victory.
For many, it felt like an anticlimactic conclusion to McGregor's remarkable career.
But inside an arena that often feels like Hawai'i's "Ninth Island," the night ultimately belonged to Holloway.
Rather than mourning what never materialized inside the Octagon, Saturday became a celebration of one of Hawai'i's greatest athletes — a fighter who has spent nearly 15 years carrying his state onto the biggest stage in mixed martial arts.

If a loss happens on Apple TV (and after midnight), did it really ever happen?
The bullpen choices of Walt Weiss are unknowable, but the lineup is largely predictable. For tonight’s contest, he’s running with the same 1-5 as last night. Drake Baldwin remains in the cleanup spot but will DH. Joey Bart, the only Brave to have a homer off Matthew Liberatore in seven plate appearances, will catch for Reynaldo López and bat eighth. Austin Riley moves up a spot to hit sixth. Jorge Mateo gets the start over Jim Jarvis in the nine-hole and at shortshop.
Mike Yastrzemski was going to sit in favor of Eli White anyway versus the lefty Liberatore, but he has been swinging it well in the month of July. Unfortunately, the baseball gods have come to collect. His left elbow inflammation has landed him on the IL in a host of roster moves announced this afternoon.
TL;DR:
IL: Yaz

Center Rienk Mast posted 16 points and 11 rebounds and swingman Taevion Kinsey added 16 points to lead the Pacers to a 99-93 win over the Cavaliers at the Pavilion in Las Vegas on Friday in the first NBA Summer League game of the season for both teams.
Forward Jalen Slawson added 15 points, six rebounds, five ***** ists and five blocks for the Pacers. Guard Taelon Peter scored 13 points and forward Keion Brooks Jr. added 11. Guard Meleek Thomas and forward Nae'Qwan Tomlin led the Cavaliers with 20 points each. Guard Malakhi Branham added 15 points.
The Pacers and Cavs both had a brutal first quarter with evident jitters as both struggled to make shots and take care of the basketball. Cleveland led 14-11 after the first quarter as the Pacers got a few buckets from center Rienk Mast but little else.
But the the Pacers combined for 64 points in the middle two quarters, outscoring Cleveland 32-15 in the third to take a sizable lead heading into the fourth. A big part of what sparked the revival was the play of point guards Braden Smith and Yuki Kawamura, and the fact that the Pacers didn't have a problem putting both on the floor at the same time. That obviously made them small in the backcourt as Smith is just 5 foot 10 and Kawamura is 5-7, but they're both so good at passing the ball and getting it ahead that they made the pace of the game work for them.
Smith finished with just five points on 1 of 8 shooting including 1 of 5 from 3 but he had eight rebounds, four ***** ists and three steals. Kawamura had eight points on 3 of 5 shooting and four ***** ists, but their impacts went beyond just the counting stats as they raised the level for everyone else on the floor. As ***** istant coach Johnny Carpenter said about Kawamura before leaving for his job in Milwaukee, Kawamura and Smith both force everyone around them to move more when they're on the floor and them being around got everyone else organized and also running hard up and down the floor looking for opportunities. Kawamura was plus-4 in his time on the floor though Smith was minus-5.

Bo Nix certainly appears to be on track for Denver Broncos training camp later this month.
QB Country, led by David Morris nationally and by Hudson Hughes in Denver, shared a highlight video of one of Nix's recent throwing sessions on Instagram earlier this week.
In the video, Nix is seen flying through drills seemingly without any limitations with his now-recovered ankle. The 26-year-old quarterback underwent an initial surgery after breaking his ankle in the divisional round of the NFL playoffs in January, then he had a clean-up surgery to remove bone spurs ahead of the NFL draft in April.
Nix now appears to be healthy after being limited at practice this spring:
"The doctors told me that the ankle looks good as new," Nix said in June. "We're right back to normal."

Kylian Mbappe was substituted as a precaution in France’s 2-0 World Cup quarter-final win over Morocco on Thursday.
France captain Mbappe, who is now level with Lionel Messi in the golden boot race with eight goals, scored a stunning opening goal in the second-half having missed a first-half penalty in Boston.
Yet shortly afterwards, Morocco defender Issa Diop sliced through the France forward, receiving a yellow card as Mbappe reacted in pain.
France boss Didier Deschamps was taking no chances as Les Bleus went 2-0 up through Ousmane Dembele, with Mbappe making way for Jean-Philippe Mateta in the 78th minute.
Mbappe had ice strapped to his ankle on the substitutes bench but did not look overly concerned, with five days until France’s semi-final against Spain or Belgium.

Charles Barkley says one surprising trait keeps LeBron James out of his GOAT spot originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The NBA's GOAT debate has never really gone away. Every championship, milestone and postseason run seems to reignite the conversation surrounding Michael Jordan, LeBron James and, for some fans, Kobe Bryant. This week, Hall of Famer Charles Barkley added another layer to the discussion with an explanation that had nothing to do with rings, statistics or longevity.
Instead, Barkley believes LeBron has one characteristic that actually hurts his case. Ironically, it's being a genuinely good person.
During an appearance on Unfiltered with Ricky Bo and Bill Colarulo on Philadelphia's 97.5 The Fanatic, Barkley ranked the three greatest players he has ever watched.
His list started with Michael Jordan, followed by Kobe Bryant and then LeBron James. That's already enough to spark debate among basketball fans. But Barkley wasn't finished.
