A mother whose teenage son died from a rare form of cancer has been sharing his story to raise awareness of the symptoms and keep his memory alive.
Jake Swinscoe, from Salisbury in Wiltshire, died just two weeks before his 14th birthday in April 2024, 10 months after being diagnosed with alveolar rhabdomyosarcoma, an aggressive soft tissue cancer.
His mother Lynsey said before his diagnosis she thought Jake was suffering from hay fever and had no idea a runny nose and watery eyes "could be potential symptoms of cancer".
She said the thing Jake was scared about "wasn't dying" but not being remembered, telling his mum: "I want to be well-known and not forgotten".

The Chicago Cubs have been waiting for Ben Brown to return from his neck injury, but his season is over, according to Cubs insider Taylor McGregor.
Brown was trying to come back and provide some much-needed help for the Cubs pitching staff. He originally went on the injured list in June. However, after a bridge camp game in late August, he once again started experiencing symptoms of his neck injury.
That setback ultimately sealed his fate. Without Brown coming back, the Cubs will have to rely on the arms they have and potentially some other returning arms. Shelby Miller, Edward Cabrera, Javier ******* ad and Justin Steele could still come and save the Cubs' pitching staff.

Three attacks involving an animal that "displayed unusually aggressive behavior toward people," which can be ******* ociated with rabies, have been reported in New Hampshire, according to authorities. However, officials have yet to determine exactly what type of animal is ambushing the unsuspecting humans.
From Aug. 30-31, police received three reports of animal attacks in the same area of Lebanon, about 122 miles northwest of Boston, according to news releases from the Lebanon Police Department. The attacks seem to be unprovoked, and police believe the same animal is responsible.
Video shows the moment one person was attacked by the unknown animal. The wild animal is shown running from what appears to be a wooded area as the victim walks around a moving truck. The animal then goes after the person's legs in an unprovoked attack. It attacks the victim multiple times. The victim is seen flinging the animal away from them after it attacks their legs again, and then the animal returns to the wooded area.
The animal responsible for the attacks has not been identified, but witnesses say they believe the animal is either a gray fox or a fisher, a nocturnal mammal in the weasel family, according to Defenders of Wildlife. It is an elusive animal that lives in forests throughout the Northeast, the Pacific Northwest and the Great Lakes states.
It "reportedly displayed unusually aggressive behavior toward people," police said. This behavior is ******* ociated with animals that have contracted rabies, which can be lethal in humans if they do not seek medical attention before symptoms appear, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Kate Beckinsale is speaking openly about how PTSD can affect people even when their struggles are not visible to others.
The actress shared a pair of Instagram videos on September 2 in which she discussed the toll trauma can take on sleep, daily life and relationships. Her comments came after she had also been reflecting publicly on grief following the death of her mother, Judy Loe.
Beckinsale focused much of her message on people who continue working, caring for family and socializing while dealing with intense symptoms privately.

A football player of William Jewell College passed away on Saturday following his collapse on the sidelines of the school's season-opener game just minutes after he scored a touchdown, the school said.
Junior running back MicahJo Barnett received medical help at Greene Stadium and was then transported to the nearest hospital by an ambulance, where he was declared dead. Liberty authorities said the medical team responded to the player 20 minutes after kickoff but provided no other details. He was 21 years old.
The game against Fort Lewis College, another NCAA Division II squad, was stopped and later canceled. Barnett scored the touchdown by running for 1 yard with 5:15 left in the first quarter, and play was interrupted with 4:32 remaining after Fort Lewis punts went out of bounds, according to online match statistics. He gained 30 yards in six carries, and William Jewell led the score 7-0.
"William Jewell College and the Liberty community mourn the passing of MicahJo Barnett. Our thoughts and prayers are with MicahJo's family, teammates, friends, coaches, and faculty and staff," said the school in its statement. Liberty Fire EMS stated that Barnett showed seizure-like symptoms, as reported by Fox4 KC.
The cause of death is still not clear. A college spokeswoman told Newsweek that Barnett had no known pre-existing condition that could have prevented him from playing, and that no further information about the nature or cause of the emergency is available at this time. Barnett was enrolled in the business administration program and was connected to Liberty, the city where William Jewell's campus is located. While being a senior at Liberty North, he helped the Eagles win a Missouri state championship.

Several baby goats at a mobile petting zoo in North Carolina were infected with rabies, and authorities are asking anyone who had contact with the animals to reach out to health officials. Rabies can be deadly if people don't receive treatment before symptoms begin.
Residents in western North Carolina may have had contact with the infected goats from Farm Adventures at the mobile petting zoo's location in Harmony or at off-site events between July 28 and August 27, local officials said in a statement.
Farm Adventures is based in Iredell County and books events in surrounding communities, and officials say the owner has been cooperating with the investigation.
"There is not a broad risk to the public — only those who attended events at the mobile petting zoo and were in close contact with the goats are at risk," officials said, asking residents to call their local health department for a rabies risk ***** sment and potential treatment.
"Residents should not wait for symptoms before calling," Mecklenburg County Health Director Dr. Kimberly Scott said.

William Jewell announced that junior running back MicahJo Barnett has died. Barnett appeared to suffer a medical emergency on the sideline during the Cardinals' home opener against Fort Lewis on Saturday.

ANAHEIM, Calif. - Wade Meckler was one of the hottest hitters in in the Angels' lineup when his season nearly came to an end on August 20 against the Houston Astros.
In his third at-bat of the game, Meckler was struck by a loose 90.6 MPH sinker that connected squarely with the base of Meckler's helmet and took him out of the game, sending him on a journey through concussion protocols.
For the first couple of days after the hit by pitch, Meckler suffered form headaches pressure in his head and trouble sleeping, all the "textbook symptoms of a concussion," as he described it, but soon enough those symptoms cleared up and Meckler was able to clear testing to get him back on the field, first in two rehab starts, then back at the Big A.
In his first game back at the Major League level on Friday against the Philadelphia Phillies, Meckler didn't waste any time getting back to business.
On the first Big League pitch he'd seen in nearly two weeks, Meckler ripped a single up the middle to drive in Zach Neto and put the Angels ahead 1-0 in the bottom of the first.

Brian Austin Green is opening up about a frightening health crisis that changed nearly every part of his daily life. The Beverly Hills, 90210 alum says he once struggled to walk, speak, read and write. Green described the symptoms as neurological and "stroke-like."
During the Aug. 26 episode of Really Famous with Kara Mayer Robinson, Green revisited the health struggle he experienced more than a decade ago. "I ended up with this neurological thing, and it was, like, stroke-like symptoms," Green said.
The actor explained that the illness began when he was around 39 or 40. According to Green, the symptoms became so severe that he had to relearn basic skills. "I had to learn how to walk again, to talk again," he said. Green added that he could not read or write during the worst period.
The Beverly Hills 90210 star told Robinson that his brain and body felt completely disconnected. He estimated that his recovery took roughly four and a half years.
Green said doctors never reached a complete diagnosis for the neurological symptoms. However, he believes internal inflammation played a role. He also discussed diet and emotional stress as possible contributing factors.

The "Rocky Horror Picture Show" star suffered the medical emergency in July 2012, but initially had no idea anything was wrong. Busy Philipps is grateful to be alive after spending six months battling a brain tumor.
Talking with People in an interview published Wednesday, Philipps revealed that she learned about her grade 2 oligodendroglioma – a rare and slow-moving tumor – right as she booked her upcoming role on "Cupertino." She called the experience "the weirdest six months of my life."
"I'm grateful that I'm alive," she said.
The tumor was discovered after Philipps did a Prenuvo MRI scan. She did it despite her doctors saying it wasn't needed because she was young and did not have any symptoms but she felt the need to do it anyway.
The day before the scan was scheduled, Philipps' friend and former "Dawson's Creek" co-star James Van Der Beek lost his battle with cancer and the day after the scan she was set to meet with "Cupertino" creators Michelle and Robert King. She wondered if because of all that if she should just cancel the scan but a conversation with her ex-husband Marc Silverstein convinced her to stick it out.

Howie Mandel says his wife, Terry Mandel, eventually reached a point where living around his obsessive-compulsive disorder and intense fear of germs had become too much.
During the August 24 episode of Hoda Kotb's Joy 101 podcast, the 70-year-old comedian recalled Terry telling him she could not continue living that way unless he sought professional help. Her ultimatum eventually sent him to a psychiatrist, where Mandel was diagnosed with OCD in his 40s after experiencing symptoms since childhood.
He gave Kotb several examples of how extensively his rituals affected the household. Mandel said he built a separate ****** e in the backyard where he might stay for a week if one of their children sneezed, and he sometimes required family members to disinfect phones or other objects he considered contaminated.

A drug used to treat erectile dysfunction and enlarged prostate symptoms may raise the risk of glaucoma, a serious eye condition that can cause gradual vision loss, according to new research.
An international team of researchers ****** yzed health records from nearly 74,000 men ages 40 and older with lower urinary tract symptoms to examine whether long-term tadalafil use was ****** ociated with a greater risk of glaucoma.

(NEXSTAR) — The condition known to cause "scromiting" among some marijuana users has become more prevalent in the U.S., a recent report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention shows, though the trend among a specific age group may contradict previous understandings of the syndrome.
Cannabis (or cannabinoid) hyperemesis syndrome (CHS) is as serious as it sounds. The condition, which can cause excessive vomiting with recurring bouts of severe stomach pain and nausea, was first detected in Australia two decades ago. Some have referred to a combination of CHS symptoms – screaming, due to the intense pain, and vomiting – as "scromiting."
Hot showers and baths are often described as the only way to mitigate the discomfort. In rare cases, the condition has resulted in death, health officials said.

Michael Wright, an actor known for his roles in the films The Five Heartbeats and Sugar Hill, has died at age 70.
Wright died on Wednesday, August 19, after suffering heart failure and complications of Marchiafava-Bignami disease, his family told TMZ.
Marchiafava-Bignami disease, or MBD, is a rare condition involving the erosion of the corpus callosum, the area that facilitates communication between the brain's two hemispheres, according to Verywell Health. Born in New York City on April 30, 1956, Wright played Eddie, the troubled lead singer of a fictional R&B group, in the 1991 musical drama The Five Heartbeats, written by Robert Townsend and Keenen Ivory Wayans and directed by Townsend. Entertainment Weekly critic Owen Gleiberman said Wright gave a "a stunning performance" in the film and "makes [Eddie] sleek, with undercurrents of hostility and danger."

Rushing said that Sunday was the first time he'd felt pain while throwing — "didn't feel a pop or anything, but felt pretty serious as it kind of tightened up on me a little bit."
Manager Dave Roberts said last week that Rushing's MRI showed a slight UCL tear. Rushing added Tuesday that something similar had appeared on previous scans, without symptoms.
"It's something we've known about, but it hasn't gotten worse over the years," Rushing said. "And so it puts my arm in just a fine spot, and obviously, we just worry about the muscle."

Lucy Davis, who is known for her appearance in The Office, has been diagnosed with terminal cancer. The star took to her Instagram account to post this heartbreaking news.
According to her update, the actor has been diagnosed with stage 4 breast cancer. Following her revelation, The Office star also pointed out that the cancer was incurable, as it has already metastasized into her bones. Furthermore, such a situation also leaves her in a helpless state, as chemotherapy will probably not help her situation.
Elaborating on her illness, Davis pointed out how she had a small lump on her breast. However, since the lump was small, the 53-year-old ignored it, which led to the cancer spreading further. Advising her followers, Davis asked them not to disregard any symptoms and get checked immediately.
Davis wrote on her Instagram, "As of now, I'm trying to live out whatever might be left of my life in as fun a way as I possibly can. I always like to find the teachable moments in anything negative that happens. And cancer has not disappointed in that regard; there's a lot I have learned from it, and I'm grateful for that. As some of you will know, the pain can really be something else. Standing and walking for too long a time can be hard, and I need to use a wheelchair sometimes (so if you see me toddling around in one, feel free to give me a push!)"
Continuing with her long message, The Office actor also made an important request to all her friends and family. She stated that everybody must continue making fun of her and teasing her like before. The 53-year-old further reflected that there was no worse feeling for a sick person than when their family treats them as if they were unwell.

For most coaches, the issue of player concussions requires sympathy. Moving forward, 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan will easily be able to empathize with players who have suffered head trauma.
In his first training-camp press conference following a July 11 automobile accident, Shanahan was asked if the severe concussion that he sustained will change his perspective on players who are dealing with the effects of brain injuries.
"Yeah, no doubt," Shanahan said. "I've been told so much by these guys, don't compare a sports concussion to an accident like this. I'm starting to realize that now. Just little things, like when they label things, like whether it's severe or mild. You hear someone has a mild one, I'm like, 'Oh, alright. It might be one game, but usually that's two.' Then you kind of learn those are just words. Each one's a little bit different. I definitely can relate to how scary it is when you don't know if you will feel right again. It's definitely made me more educated on it. Usually I just listen, and like, 'Tell me when, OK?' and I move on, but I understand it a lot better and what guys got to go through and the protocol to get back. There's not a protocol for me on paper, but it's really cool to be in a profession that knows what to do with those things. All the people that I need help from, it was already built in here. They've got a lot of experience with it, and it's been really good for me."
If anything, players need to be encouraged to not return until they're fully back to normal. Some players will try to hide their symptoms. Some will resist being evaluated. Some will tank the baseline cognitive exams so that it will be easier to be cleared to return. (Peyton Manning once admitted to doing that, before walking it back as a joke.)
Starting in 2009, when Congress got involved in the issue of brain health, the NFL began to take concussions very seriously. For the most part, it does. (There are still periodic lapses in the concussion-spotting process.)

Underworld actress Kate Beckinsale is speaking up about body-shaming comments after she wipes her Instagram clean of posts.
The 53-year-old took to her Instagram Stories on Saturday, Aug. 8 to highlight all the negative hate she has received about her body in the last year. The comments accuse the actress of overusing Ozempic, being anorexic, and not being as attractive as she used to be.
Beckinsale responded to the comments, writing: "You take a break from Instagram for several months following the death of your mother, delete all of your posts and explain in some considerable detail about what you may have lost weight, including the fact that weight loss is one of the very first physical signs of bereavement… I think people might be broken."
The Aviator actress' mother, Judy Loe, died in July 2025 after a cancer diagnosis, just 18 months after she lost her stepfather Roy Battersby in January 2024.
Beckinsale has also been candid about her health, recently posting a now-deleted 13-part video discussing her diagnosis of mast cell disease and mast cell activation syndrome. According to Healthline, the condition occurs when the mast cells in your body release too much of a substance that causes allergy-like symptoms.

Initial **** ysis of the footage suggested the youngster had suffered a knee injury, and Mikel Arteta confirmed afterwards that the situation doesn't look good.
"Probably we're going to have [an update] tomorrow," Arteta began. "It doesn't look good, the mechanism is not too positive, the symptoms that he already has either. Let's hope that tomorrow the news is better than we hope."
