Several baby goats at a mobile petting zoo in North Carolina were infected with rabies, and authorities are asking anyone who had contact with the animals to reach out to health officials. Rabies can be deadly if people don't receive treatment before symptoms begin.
Residents in western North Carolina may have had contact with the infected goats from Farm Adventures at the mobile petting zoo's location in Harmony or at off-site events between July 28 and August 27, local officials said in a statement.
Farm Adventures is based in Iredell County and books events in surrounding communities, and officials say the owner has been cooperating with the investigation.
"There is not a broad risk to the public — only those who attended events at the mobile petting zoo and were in close contact with the goats are at risk," officials said, asking residents to call their local health department for a rabies risk ***** sment and potential treatment.
"Residents should not wait for symptoms before calling," Mecklenburg County Health Director Dr. Kimberly Scott said.

Mark Consuelos is willing to make extreme sacrifices for his beloved pup, Lena.
The Live with Kelly and Mark host, 55, told his wife and cohost Kelly Ripa during the Tuesday, August 11, episode of their daytime talk show that he would "stay in a loveless marriage just to make sure I could be with Lena every day."
"That's how much I love Lena," Consuelos added, per People.
Ripa, clearly not bothered by her husband's admission, teased, "Is that all you're asking for, is a loveless marriage? Done!"
Consuelos explained that if the pair ever divorced, he would "stay up at night wondering what [Lena] is doing," or "just wondering if there was some other man petting her."

But look further and an image of Jon Bernthal, the sensitive actor, swiftly emerges. The yoga block next to that kettlebell. The boxes of herbal tea next to those supplements. The photos of his wife, three children and two brothers. The fact that the pit bull, a rescue named Bam Bam, is a certifiable sweetheart who just wants head pats and a nice lap to rest his head on.
"Are you sure you're okay?" Bernthal asks as I scratch a blissed-out Bam Bam behind his ears. "Because once you start petting him … "
It's an early July afternoon at the August Wilson Theatre, and Bernthal has two days left of starring in a tumultuous stage adaptation of "Dog Day Afternoon." Long based in Ojai, California, the 49-year-old recently bought a home in D.C. to keep his family closer during his Broadway stint. And it was in the D.C. area, where Bernthal was born and raised, that his scrappier side was forged.
