Céline Dion suffered symptoms for nearly two decades before she was diagnosed with stiff-person syndrome in 2022.
In an interview for the September 2026 issue of Harper's Bazaar, the Canadian superstar recalled how she often experienced severe pain and inability to walk for many years.
"It is a progressive condition. I don't like to say 'disease,'" she told the outlet, before describing how she decided to speak about the health crisis in her 2024 documentary, I Am: Celine Dion. "(The fans) paid for tickets. They bought my records. They gave me that luxury. So the least I can do is tell them that I'm alive."
Stiff-person syndrome (SPS) is a rare neurological disorder characterised by muscular rigidity.
Following the diagnosis, Céline embarked on a course of rehabilitation, which included new medication, physical therapy, and immunotherapy.
In the lead-up to her upcoming residency at the Plenitude Arena in Paris, France, the My Heart Will Go On hitmaker shared that she has been doing regular Pilates sessions to help maintain her mobility.

Chris Hemsworth may be one of Hollywood's biggest stars, but even he makes mistakes from time to time. The father of three revealed to Harper's Bazaar Arabia that he was denied passage onto a plane after bringing the wrong passport for his young son.
"I actually went to the airport once, and I had my daughter's passport instead of my son's passport…They kind of look the same," he explained, as his wife, Elsa Pataky, chimed in: "They don't."
"I said, 'Oh, yeah, this is her.' And they were like, 'That's a boy. No,'" he recalled. "So, yeah, that didn't work." Elsa added that neither Chris nor their son could fly that day due to the mix-up.
While Chris, Elsa and the kids are constantly traveling, the pair have worked hard to ensure that their three kids, India, 14, and twins Sasha and Tristan, 12, remain humble and down-to-earth.
"I want them to have a great appreciation for everything," Chris told People. "I grew up with very little money, but my parents were my absolute heroes. They were respectful, kind human beings and operated in a way that was constantly inspiring and nurturing and kind."
