Cincinnati Reds manager Terry Francona's future is drawing attention as the front office looks ahead to next season. Francona has one guaranteed year left on his original three-year contract, plus a club option for 2028. Team president Nick Krall said he doesn't think it is a lame-duck status for someone like Francona. Francona said he values the people around him and feels stronger about them after being there for a while. He said the Reds would be hard pressed to find a better fit for what they are trying to do. A former No. 9 overall pick from UConn, Kemba Walker put together the strongest career in franchise history to this point. While Walker is famous for wearing the No. 15, he wore the No. 1 during his rookie season with the Charlotte Bobcats. Over his career with the franchise, Walker would play eight seasons in Charlotte, averaging 19.8 points, 5.5 **** ists, 3.8 rebounds, 1.3 steals and 0.4 blocks in 605 appearances.
Following his time with the Hornets, he'd land with the Boston Celtics in a sign-and-trade deal that brought Terry Rozier to Charlotte. After two seasons in Boston, Walker would play a season for the New York Knicks and finish his NBA career after nine games for the Dallas Mavericks. In 12 seasons total, Walker played 750 games while averaging 19.3 points, 5.3 **** ists, 3.8 rebounds, 1.2 steals and 0.4 blocks. He now works with the Hornets as a player development coach and has opened up "Kemba Walker Sports Academy" in Concord, North Carolina.

The beginning of the Washington Commanders' season is not for the weak. First, they face division opponents in the first two weeks of the season, and then they play the reigning Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks in Week 3. Both games against division opponents are on the road, too, which doesn't help anything.
On Sunday, the Commanders opened their season against the Philadelphia Eagles, and it was a difficult game to watch early on. The Commanders struggled with timing, Jayden Daniels looked uncomfortable, and Terry McLaurin was MIA. Defensively, the secondary led the team in tackles, which is concerning. Rookie Sonny Styles actually led all linebackers with four tackles (three solo), one sack, two tackles for a loss, and one quarterback hit.
They seemed to figure things out near the end of the game, but it was too little, too late, and the Commanders fell 24-22 after failing to convert a two-point attempt to tie the game. Let's take a look at the lowest and highest-graded players from the Commanders' loss, as graded by Pro Football Focus.

It was then Hedden was destined to be a quarterback with a supportive blended family. His parents and stepparents "made sure I made every tryout. They took me to camps. They helped me meet the coaches I wanted to learn from." And they attended every game, including during his two years at Furman and this season with the Aggies. After a 10-percentage-point jump in accuracy from his freshman season, Hedden entered the portal to "raise the ceiling a little bit" in pursuit of future pro opportunities. NMSU head coach Tony Sanchez's spread attack offered protection (312 pounds an O-lineman) and speedy targets. Slot receiver TK King has been GPS-clocked at nearly 23 mph and laser-timed at 20.74 seconds over 200 meters. "The biggest thing for me is I've got to remember that on game day, he's a little bit faster than he is in practice," Hedden said of King. "When he's running a route, you can throw it out there and he'll turn it on. We talk about it in the meeting room. Go make him run 100 meters to catch the ball." King's average target depth is 21 yards. He has catch-and-dashes of 46, 42 and 34 yards. The Aggies have sets of four and five receivers or up to two tight ends. Running back James Jones has no fumbles or negative-yard rushes in 30 carries. Jones also is an effective blocker who can roll into the flats. Hedden is 80% accurate on screens, hitches and check-down throws. "The quarterback in this offense is really a distributor," Hedden said. "We really focus on the things we're good at, and we repeat those things, and find new ways to do those things every week. It's really been a lot of fun to play in this offense with these coaches."
The Aggies' base is chaos, with shifts, movements and glove-to-glove combat in the trenches and running lanes. "When things get so cranky, like how many blitzes and stunts, it looks like Star Wars to us," weakside linebacker Sone Aupiu said. His first two NMSU seasons, Aupiu played middle linebacker. He moved to will linebacker last year but still trains at all second-tier positions, including jack, the stand-up edge defender. Helped by playing on the narrow side of the formation, Aupiu has freedom to jump lanes. "When it comes to gap schemes, that's what I love," he said. "Coming my way to the boundary, I'm looking to hit 'em." His father grew up in Samoa, his mother in New Zealand, where rugby was the favored sport. He said he aspires to play professional rugby. But for now, Aupiu said, "I chose a different route, which was football. Everybody else on my mom's side chose rugby." Aupiu received a few college offers. Even though the season opener for the Washington Commanders is just days away, it is never too early to look ahead to the future and what the Commanders might do in the 2027 NFL Draft. In ESPN's most recent mock draft, Washington is projected to have the No. 10 overall pick and select wide receiver Charlie Becker out of Indiana.
First, it is notable that the Commanders are projected to have the No. 10 overall pick. ESPN projects no trade, meaning Washington is expected to have the tenth-worst record in the NFL and will not be close to making the playoffs.
This is a rather dismal prediction for a team that just reached the NFC Championship in 2024. Washington's fate relies on the health of quarterback Jayden Daniels, who suffered three different injuries last season. If he can stay healthy all season, the Commanders have a chance to compete for a playoff spot this season.
However, there are other concerns about Washington's playoff chances. Arguably the biggest concern for the Commanders going into training camp was the wide receiver depth. They have Terry McLaurin as the No. 1 receiver and signed Stefon Diggs as the No. 2, with rookie Antonio Williams expected to be the No. 3. It is unclear what Williams will bring to the table as a third-round draft pick, and McLaurin also missed time last year. Diggs is coming off his seventh 1,000-yard season in his career, so he should help Daniels out this season.
Overall, it is reasonable to believe that Washington may end up with the No. 10 overall pick in the NFL Draft, but that projection could change as the season goes on. Perceptions of the 2026 Washington Commanders have changed a lot over the last month. Heading into training camp, the Commanders were a team of mystery, but many believed they could still compete for a playoff spot in 2026 if they could keep quarterback Jayden Daniels healthy.
Optimism grew when Washington signed four-time Pro Bowl wideout Stefon Diggs, giving Daniels another top-tier weapon, while also making life a bit easier for star receiver Terry McLaurin. But the day after Diggs competed in his first Commanders' practice, left tackle Laremy Tunsil tore his triceps. It was a devastating injury for many reasons. Tunsil is one of the NFL's best players, and he was critical in protecting Daniels.
Washington's solution was to move Brandon Coleman back to left tackle to replace Tunsil. It's a good plan, considering Coleman played left tackle in 2024. While he's no Tunsil, Coleman is better than multiple left tackles in the NFL. The only problem is that it took Coleman away from the left guard competition, which he was expected to win.
Making matters worse, new center Nick Allegretti missed almost all of training camp. The veteran offensive lineman moved to center this offseason to replace Tyler Biadasz. While the Commanders are confident in Allegretti, those on the outside don't believe Washington did enough at center. All summer long, journeyman Julian Good-Jones and rookie sixth-round pick Matt Gulbin — who have a combined two career NFL snaps — took turns at center. They struggled; Good-Jones was cut and is now on the practice squad, while Gulbin is one snap away from replacing Allegretti.
As a result, several **** ysts have predicted that Washington will finish last in the NFC East.

On Saturday night, Michigan's season-opening matchup against Western Michigan went from a college football game to an all-time timekeeping scandal.
Michigan Wolverines quarterback Bryce Underwood launched a Hail Mary out of the end zone as the clock hit triple zeroes. The Western Michigan Broncos thought they'd pulled off the 12-7 upset. After review, officials concluded one second remained on the clock, giving Michigan a second chance. Underwood found JJ Buchanan for the game-winning touchdown, shrouded in controversy.
On the NBC broadcast, rules ***** yst Terry McAuley was flabberghasted by that phantom second. The Big Ten released a formal statement, including the official internal video used for review. On Sunday, NBC's John Fanta stated, "The official time of the game is kept by the Big Ten. Our cameras are not the official arbiter of timekeeping within the game."
By Monday night, ESPN's broadcast of Florida State and SMU experienced a lengthy delay due to a power outage at Doak Campbell Stadium. Finally, officials surmised they'd restored enough light and power to play the game, but with several caveats. No replay, no scoreboard, no PA announcer, and no coach-to-play communication.

No. 8 Texas A&M (1-0) was slow out of the gate during Saturday night's season opener vs. Missouri State, as the Aggies' revamped offensive line struggled to find consistency, giving up several pressures and two sacks on starting quarterback Marcel Reed, but thanks to adjustments from coach Mike Elko and OL coach Adam Cushing, this group tightened up in the second half.
Leading 19-0 going into halftime, Texas A&M's defense shut down the Bears throughout the night, which continued into the third and fourth quarters, allowing 67 total yards, including a pedestrian 37 rushing yards. With A&M's O-line improvement, the Aggie rushing attack made its late impact, as wide receiver Terry Bussey, RB Jamarion Morrow, and freshman running back Carsyn Baker scored touchdowns.
Marcel Reed completed 21/30 for 233 yards and 2 touchdowns, completing impressive pass after impressive pass despite early pressure in his face, while transfer wide receiver Isaiah Horton made his impact known, leading the game with 76 receiving yards and his first touchdown as an Aggie.

The game had appeared to be over one play before when Underwood's previous Hail Mary attempt sailed out of the end zone with the game clock appearing to have expired, but the officials put one second left on the clock, giving the Wolverines their opportunity to win.

Washington Commanders general manager Adam Peters set out to give his team and coaching staff a bit of an overhaul during the offseason. He brought in new coordinators and other coaching staff, and the roster looks quite different from what it did in 2025, especially defensively. Those changes, combined with the injuries the team sustained last season, have led NFL experts and ***** ysts to view the Commanders less favorably.
That negativity has put a chip on the shoulders of the Commanders' roster, and the fuel for that fire continues to pour in. The Athletic's Mike Sando had six NFL executives rank all 16 NFC teams, and the Commanders landed at 13th.

Let's pull back the blinders for a minute and take a close look at the Commanders' 2024 season. What weapons did Jayden Daniels have to work with besides Terry McLaurin? What did the defense look like? How was Daniels' protection? As you answer those questions, remember how that season turned out for the Commanders, culminating in Offensive Rookie of the Year honors for Daniels and an NFC Championship appearance for the Commanders.
The 2025 season was plagued by injuries, so it's impossible to know what could have happened "if" certain players remained healthy. Now, everyone wants to throw the Commanders to the bottom of the league, which is only making the players want to win that much more.

The Washington Commanders added plenty of new faces to their roster during the offseason. Many of their additions were to the defensive side of the ball, but there were notable offensive additions to the team, too. Tight end Chig Okonkwo and wide receiver Stefon Diggs lead that charge, but rookie wide receiver Antonio Williams can't be left out either.
The Commanders are excited about their offensive additions, and Pro Football Focus recently named Okonkwo as one of five fantasy football breakout stars in 2026.
After discussing Okonkwo's time with the Tennessee **** ans, reviewing some of his stats, and mentioning that the Commanders invested more in Okonkwo than any skill player outside of Terry McLaurin, the article says:
Expectations for Okonkwo will be higher than they were for (Zach) Ertz at ages 34 and 35. He played 12 of the first 14 snaps in the second preseason game, suggesting he will have a larger role than he did in Tennessee and that Ertz had in Washingotn. Given the uncertainty at wide receiver outside of McLaurin and recent free-agent addition Stefon Diggs, Okonkwo is third on the team in targets. That gives him a solid floor as a low-end TE2.
His ability to turn into a TE1 will largely depend on the quality of the Commanders' offense in general. It's unlikely Okonkwo becomes a frequent target near the goal line, given his lighter size for a tight end, but a few more touchdowns than usual are a possibility.

Now that he's preparing for his high-profile debut at LSU, the heat has simmered down a bit. That was until Wednesday morning and the timing for Kiffin's haters is golden.
In a Vanity Fair excerpt from author John Talty's book "Lane Being Lane: The Story of Lane Kiffin," which is available on Sept. 15, 2026, we get to see the longtime coach's true colors from a different time in his life. A portion of the book details his time at Alabama on Nick Saban's staff in the mid-2010s.
Kiffin was suspected to be in the midst of a rough patch in life. He was accused of having an affair with his wife, Layla, who divorced him a decade ago, leaving Lane alone as a bachelor-type in Tuscaloosa. But they're back together after their 2016 divorce.
"While Kiffin would not be fired for "banging," off-field behavior did reach Saban's desk. Terry Saban, Nick's wife, had heard through friends that Kiffin, then living separately from his wife Layla and his children who were in California, was out and about on the town trying to pick up women. It led Saban to tell at least one staff member to give Kiffin some helpful advice.

After suffering a slight strain to his left quad, Cincinnati Reds shortstop Elly De La Cruz was in the designated hitter spot for the entire series against the San Diego Padres.
"He has done a really good job," Reds manager Terry Francona said. "(On Tuesday, Sept. 1), he (ran) first to third. He kept his head up, knew where the ball was. He had a pretty good governor. He knew where he was going. He handled it pretty good."
The Reds have been keeping an eye on De La Cruz, and he doesn't always have to run at his very top speed as a way to protect his quad.
"(The doctor) thinks Elly can play through this with the caveat that if it gets worse, he's got to let us know," Francona said. "He has promised he'll do that."
De La Cruz was pulled from the game last Sunday against the Chicago Cubs. "Me and Freddie (Benavides) kind of double-teamed him about coming out," Francona said.

After a gutsy 100-pitch primetime effort at Wrigley Field on Sunday, Aug. 30, Chase Burns will be put on an innings limit over the final month of the regular season, Reds manager Terry Francona said.
Burns, the Reds' first 15-game winner since Luis Castillo in 2019, will pitch next on Monday, Sept. 7, when the team continues its end-of-the-season gauntlet against the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Brandon Williamson, who has not pitched since April 29, will return from shoulder fatigue and start the Reds' series finale against the San Diego Padres on Wednesday, Sept. 2, Francona said. Williamson is 2-3 with a 6.11 ERA over six starts this season.

The Washington Commanders announced their initial practice squad on Monday afternoon. It included several standout players from training camp and the preseason, with talent that will surely support game-day efforts throughout the year.
Receiver Jaden Bradley is a notable addition, someone who received high praise throughout the course of camp. Terry McLaurin has mentored the undrafted UNLV product, who proved a hard worker in practices and a dynamic playmaker in preseason games.
The Commanders have a bloated receiver corps right now, but it's still possible Bradley sees the field at some point during the regular season.
Washington also signed veteran defensive lineman Byron Cowart, a relatively late addition who is an effective run stopper up front.
The Commanders also added fan favorite Robert Henry Jr., a running back and big-play threat. Craig Reynolds was also kept in that position group, and could be the first rusher elevated with just three backs on the active roster.

The Browns have started the process of setting their initial 53-man roster.
They announced 15 cuts from their training camp roster and one cut from injured reserve on Friday afternoon. All 32 teams need to get down to 53 players by Sunday afternoon's deadline.
Four of the players were released as vested veterans. Cornerbacks Tre Avery and Tyler Hall joined offensive tackle Tyre Phillips in getting dropped from the active roster while tight end Jack Stoll was released from injured reserve.
They also waived tight end Drew Biber, offensive tackle Jeremiah Byers, punter Nik Constantinou, safety Christopher Edmonds, cornerback Nate Evans, defensive tackle Coziah Izzard, defensive tackle Patrick Jenkins, cornerback Jeremiah McClendon, offensive tacke Izavion Miller, defensive end Jamil Muhammad, wide receiver Ben Patterson, and tight end Jermaine Terry.
Cleveland has many more moves to make to hit the roster limit and there will likely be some immediate churning as other players shake free around the league in the coming days.

ESPN and Words + Pictures announced on Thursday that Saban, a "landmark multi-part ESPN Original docuseries chronicling the life, legacy and extraordinary career of Hall of Fame coach Nick Saban," will premiere on Thursday, October 8, with all six episodes being made available on the ESPN app at launch.
The first episode will debut on ESPN's network on October 8 at 6 p.m. ET, with the remaining five episodes airing throughout October and early November.
Directed by Russell Dinallo and produced by Words + Pictures' Connor Schell, Libby Geist, Aaron Cohen, and Alexa Conway, along with Tom Rinaldi, with Gabe Honig serving as co-executive producer and showrunner, Saban will chronicle Saban's 17-season coaching career as the head coach of the Alabama Crimson Tide, during which he won six National Championships.

Aug. 27—EMERY, S.D. — Once rivals and now consolidated school partners, the communities of Bridgewater and Emery each have longstanding traditions of athletic excellence.
With the introduction of a Bridgewater-Emery Athletics Hall of Fame, the past, present and future generations of greats will be preserved and promoted for the enjoyment of all.
The inaugural Bridgewater-Emery Hall of Fame induction banquet is set for Saturday, Aug. 29, at the Emery Auditorium. A social hour begins at 5 p.m. with the banquet at 6 p.m. and the induction ceremony at 7 p.m. Tickets are $40, and the event will also serve as a fundraiser for Bridgewater-Emery athletics.

Howie Mandel is reflecting on one of the lowest points in his mental health journey.
During the Monday, Aug. 24 episode of Hoda Kotb's Joy 101 podcast, the America's Got Talent judge, 70, said that he "almost died" during the COVID-19 pandemic because he was "self-medicating" while struggling with severe anxiety and obsessive-compulsive disorder, which he was diagnosed with in his 40s.

Howie Mandel says his wife, Terry Mandel, eventually reached a point where living around his obsessive-compulsive disorder and intense fear of germs had become too much.
During the August 24 episode of Hoda Kotb's Joy 101 podcast, the 70-year-old comedian recalled Terry telling him she could not continue living that way unless he sought professional help. Her ultimatum eventually sent him to a psychiatrist, where Mandel was diagnosed with OCD in his 40s after experiencing symptoms since childhood.
He gave Kotb several examples of how extensively his rituals affected the household. Mandel said he built a separate ****** e in the backyard where he might stay for a week if one of their children sneezed, and he sometimes required family members to disinfect phones or other objects he considered contaminated.
The conversation also covered a separate crisis decades later. Mandel said his anxiety intensified dramatically during the COVID-19 pandemic and that he began self-medicating in an attempt to sleep and escape his thoughts, eventually reaching a point where Terry sometimes could not wake him.
Mandel told Kotb that his fear of germs is only one manifestation of the OCD symptoms and rituals he has dealt with for much of his life. Although germaphobia became part of his public persona and comedy, he described the reality of living with it in far harsher terms. "It's ****** ," he said.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Cincinnati Reds infielder/outfielder Michael Toglia will undergo season-ending surgery Tuesday on his right shoulder after he was injured Friday making a diving catch against Arizona.
Manager Terry Francona made the announcement Monday before the opener of a three-game series at San Francisco. Team orthopedist Dr. Tim Kremchek will perform the surgery to repair a torn labrum and Toglia will do his rehabilitation in San Diego to be close to family, Francona said.
The switch-hitting Toglia suffered a dislocated shoulder on the play in the first inning of the 9-0 loss at Chase Field when, playing left field, he caught the ball by Geraldo Perdomo.
"That kid, he swore he was going to play. I saw him in the training room the next day, he was trying to do stuff," Francona said. "That's pretty amazing to me."
Toglia was placed on the 10-day injured list Sunday, a move retroactive to Saturday. The 28-year-old Toglia batted .115 with an RBI over 10 games with eight starts. He was a top prospect with Colorado after the Rockies selected him 23rd overall in the first round of the 2019 draft out of UCLA.

LYNDHURST — A year of maturity made a difference Saturday evening for the Lakeside Dragons. Playing freshmen and sophomores last year led to some growth in a 14-7 victory over Lutheran East.
The Dragons defense held Lutheran East to just seven points by staying on their ****** ignments and not freelancing, said Lakeside football coach Terry Henton.
"We talked all summer about putting in the work," Henton said of the team earning a chance to play winning football.
He said as long as they play as a team they have a chance.
"Everybody [on defense] is on a chain," Henton said. "You can't go any where alone."
