The San Francisco 49ers' reunion with Deebo Samuel pushed the team into historically unusual territory when it comes to roster age at the skill positions.
According to the ******* ociated Press' Josh Dubow, the 49ers could now start five non-quarterback skill position players age 30 or older in the same game: Mike Evans, Samuel, Christian McCaffrey, George Kittle and Kyle Juszczyk.
That would put San Francisco in exceedingly rare company. Per Dubow, only three teams in the Super Bowl era have started five skill position players 30 or older in a single game: the Buccaneers did it once in 2004 with Tim Brown, Charlie Garner, Mike Alstott, Joey Galloway and Ken Dilger, the Broncos did it once in 20023 with Mike Anderson, Ed McCaffrey, Rod Smith, Shannon Sharpe, Dwayne Carswell and Washington did it twice in 1992 with Gary Clark, Art Monk, Earnest Byner, Don Warren and Terry Orr.
The track record for those teams was mixed. The 2004 Buccaneers finished 5-11 and missed the playoffs, a steep decline from their Super Bowl ******* VII run two years earlier. The 2003 Broncos went 10-6 and made the playoffs for the first time since 2000, but were routed 41-10 by the Colts in the Wild Card round. Michael Olise's meteoric rise has transformed him from one of Europe's most exciting young wingers into a player that virtually every elite club would love to have. After a spectacular season with Bayern Munich, the French international has become a regular feature in Ballon d'Or discussions and is widely regarded as one of the most entertaining players in world football. The Washington Commanders opened training camp on Wednesday, and by all reports, the defense has the early advantage over the offense. That's not a surprise. It's how things usually go this time of the year, especially when each side is installing a new scheme.
After an uneven start on Day 1 of training camp, quarterback Jayden Daniels was better on Thursday. Far too often on Wednesday, Daniels held onto the ball for a split second too long. While no contact is allowed right now, Daniels would've been sacked multiple times if it were a game.
Again, much of this is expected right now. It's nothing to be alarmed about. But there is something that should concern Commanders' fans. Check out this X post from Nicki Jhabvala of The Athletic.
Obviously, Jhabvala is posting a GIF of Stefon Diggs, indicating that her takeaway from two days of camp is that the Commanders need the free-agent wideout.

He'll join a wide receiver corps that includes veteran Mike Evans and rookie De'Zhaun Stribling. Christian Kirk and Ricky Pearsall were expected starters for San Francisco entering training camp, though Kirk is dealing with a calf injury and Pearsall has had a flare-up with the PCL injury in his knee that he suffered last year.

The two sides eventually agreed to a deal, but the damage was done. McLaurin, the ultimate team leader, missed valuable offseason work with quarterback Jayden Daniels. He was injured in Week 3, which some attribute to him missing training camp. Fair or not, McLaurin's absence was felt on and off the field last season.
McLaurin was back with the Commanders for every offseason activity in 2026. His coaches and teammates couldn't hide their excitement. His importance on the field is known. He's Washington's No. 1 wide receiver and one of the NFL's best. However, his value to his younger teammates is immeasurable.

The biggest problem McLaurin has (and has had since he was drafted) is that he doesn't have a counterpart to take some of the workload. Sure, there are other receivers on the roster, but McLaurin has been tasked with carrying the bulk of the workload his entire career.
Recently, McLaurin was asked about the wide receivers' room and if the Commanders should add another receiver. He replied in typical McLaurin fashion.
"Yeah, that's not really my job to add or subtract on the team," McLaurin replied. "My job is to embrace whoever they bring in. If they bring someone in, if they don't bring anybody in, I have the utmost confidence that the guys in our room are going to step it up."

If you've been a fan of the Washington Commanders for a while, then you've certainly heard of Eastern Motors. You didn't have to live in Northern Virginia to know of Eastern Motors. For over 20 years, Washington players have partnered with Easterns to do commercials ahead of the new season.
Players such as Clinton Portis, Sean Taylor, Santana Moss, Chris Cooley, Kirk Cousins, LaVar Arrington and Terry McLaurin have starred in advertisements. NHL legend Alexander Ovechkin has been a part of the Eastern family, too.

During my tenure at Pinstripe Alley—hell, during my entire time as a baseball fan—I've never been shy about delving into the team's history and exploring the lives of its long roll call of players, both incredible and regrettable. We provide plenty of other coverage on the current-day activities of the teams, so I like having one spot per day on the schedule to open the ol' books and tell a story.
Whether it's remembering championship teams, Top 100 players, or notable free agent signings, there's always something out there to explore. For the past three years, we've celebrated the 25th anniversary of the 1998-2000 Yankees dynasty by doing a diary on all their regular season and playoff activity. The final pages were written this past October, so it's time for a new daily project.
With that in mind, we'll ring in the new year by beginning the Yankees Birthdays series. Every day in 2026, we'll have a new Yankees figure to discuss whose birthday happened to fall on that day. Some days will feature far more famous stars than others! But that just adds to the challenge and our interest in the exercise. It will probably surprise many, but the Redskins/Commanders have actually had some of the better NFL running backs at various points of the Super Bowl era (1966-2025). Larry Brown was the 1972 NFL Offensive Player of the Year. That year, he led the NFL in rushing yards per game, averaging 101.3. Brown also led the NFL in rushing yards in 1970.
There was John Riggins, who broke an NFL record with 24 rushing touchdowns in 1983. Riggins wore the Burgundy and Gold for 114 games, rushing for 79 rushing touchdowns. In 1986, George Rogers rushed for 18 touchdowns, helping lead the Redskins to the NFC Championship Game. Earnest Byner in 1989 led all NFL runners in rushing success rate at 60.4. Terry Allen in 1996 led the NFL in rushing touchdowns with 21.
Stephen Davis had three straight seasons over 1,300 rushing yards for Washington from 1999-2001. In that 1999 season, Davis led all NFL runners averaging 100.4 rushing yards a game, and totaling 17 rushing touchdowns. SEATTLE — On paper, the move made plenty of sense.
The Cincinnati Reds trailed the Seattle Mariners 3-0 in the seventh inning and were on the verge of watching their deficit grow. The Mariners had runners at second and third, so Reds manager Terry Francona ordered lefty Caleb Ferguson to intentionally walk Dominic Canzone to load the bases.
That brought up Cal Raleigh, last year's AL MVP runner-up. The slumping catcher is hitting just .163 this season, but he pounced on the first pitch and turned on a hanging breaking ball, sending it 408 feet into the left-field bleachers to break open the game in an 8-0 victory.
Francona stood by his decision, and said he would make the same one again every time.
"I know what Raleigh's hitting and, he still worries me," the veteran skipper said with a laugh. "But, I thought that was our best chance to have them not score. We could play the infield double-play depth. And, the worst possible outcome happened."

If Texas A&M has any chance at making it back to the College Football Playoff for the second straight season, redshirt junior quarterback Marcel Reed must improve in several areas, including eliminating the mental mistakes that heavily contributed to the Aggies' back-to-back losses to Texas and Miami in the first round of the College Football Playoff.
This offseason, Reed quickly went to work on his own, spending several weeks at the D1 Training facility in Nashville, Tennessee, his hometown, adding more muscle to his frame, while sitting down for a long-form interview that has since been cut up for your viewing pleasure.
Tuesday's release centered around Reed's goals for the 2026 season, which, heading into his third year and second full starting campaign, the NFL remains in his sights, and naming all the wide receivers he'll be throwing to this fall, now including Alabama transfer Isaiah Horton, who joins Mario Craver, Ashton Bethel-Roman, Terry Bussey, and, likely to crack the lineup, standout freshman Aaron Gregory, Texas A&M's offense is in good hands.
Last season, which Reed acknowledged, his personal stats skyrocketed, completing 62% of his passes for 3,169 yards and 25 touchdowns, while his 12 interceptions were the main issue, tied for second in the SEC, with four of his interceptions coming against Texas and Miami.
Eliminating turnovers is one thing, but consistency, especially completing a high percentage of his passes from start to finish, and making good decisions while avoiding passing attempts in double coverage, and taking the easy throw to move the chains, should result in late-season success and a shot at being selected in the 2027 or 2028 NFL Draft.

There are a lot of new faces, but the talent level remains high for the defensive backfield. Daryus Dixson figures to jump into a starting spot at cornerback after playing in all 13 games in 2025. Audavion Collins and Zion Tracy should compete for the other starting spot. It would not surprise me to see them split snaps, and Tracy has experience as a nickel corner if Penn State chooses to run 4-2-5 schemes. The depth is a bit of a question mark, but Terry Smith has plenty of talent to work with.
Two Iowa State transfers- Marcus Neal and Jeremiah Cooper- will fill the void at safety left behind by Zakee Wheatley and King Mack. Neal has received significant NFL Draft attention for 2027 and has All-Big Ten potential after a breakout 2025 season. Cooper is a solid playmaker against the pass, though he is coming off an injury.
With no Ohio State, Oregon, or Indiana on the schedule, Penn State does not face many overwhelming passing offenses this year. USC and Washington should be the toughest tests for the secondary, and one of them is at Beaver Stadium.
Losing Tony Rojas to injury was not the deciding factor in Penn State’s 2025 meltdown, but his absence was felt immediately. Rojas tore his ACL after the Oregon game, and the Nittany Lions immediately gave up 42 points to UCLA the following game. He is a dynamic playmaker against the run and pass and the unquestioned leader of a rebuilt Penn State linebacker corps. There are a lot of questions around Penn State’s front seven, so Rojas’ health will be vital to the success of this defense. If he returns to form, the Nittany Lions should have one of the top linebackers in the conference.
Penn State is on its fifth defensive coordinator in the last six seasons, but D’Anton Lynn’s track record speaks for itself. He inherited a UCLA defense that finished No. 87 in total defense in 2022 and elevated them to No. 10 in 2023. When Lincoln Riley poached him away to coach the defense at USC, he took a Trojans defense that was a complete disaster when he arrived and made them serviceable immediately. Hiring Lynn appears to be a good fit for 2026 Penn State. With new players at all three levels of the defense and roughly half of last season’s production gone, the Nittany Lions need someone who can provide results on defense right away. The schedule is favorable and there are enough veteran players on the roster to make the transition smooth for Lynn.

The Green Bay Packers and Thrivent signed a long-term sponsorship agreement that makes the Minneapolis- and Appleton-based company the official financial services partner of the team.
"Both the Packers and Thrivent are committed to making a meaningful impact across the region, strengthening our communities and serving others while delivering exceptional service," Green Bay Packers President and CEO Ed Policy said of the deal, which was announced July 13.
Thrivent was created by the 2002 merger of Aid ****** ociation for Lutherans, founded in Appleton, and Lutheran Brotherhood of Minneapolis. Thrivent has a large Appleton campus; it has more than 2.4 million clients and $212 billion in ****** ets under management.
"This partnership allows us to grow awareness of Thrivent, share our purpose-based approach to finances, and engage people through high-visibility moments on and off the field. At the same time, our shared Wisconsin roots and belief in giving back make this a collaboration that will create lasting change through our new community impact program," said Terry Rasmussen, Thrivent president and CEO.

Usually, a summer weekend will reset the sports news cycle, allowing a goldfish-brained collective consciousness to move on to something new.
That didn't keep Phillies first baseman Bryce Harper from dusting off a topic that had lost some steam since it surfaced last week.
Harper has issued a statement on Instagram addressing the report from the Philadelphia Inquirer about a Cameo video that was purchased by a FanDuel VIP host for a bettor who had lost enough money to make it money well spent in an effort to lure him back.
"In November 2024," Harper wrote in his Instagram story, "someone identifying themselves as 'Bryttanni' submitted an order through Cameo for a personal 'holiday video for Terry.' Cameo had a separate category for business video requests, and at the time I did not know this video would be used for commercial purposes. The request included a short script. I read it in good faith. FanDuel then put its own logo on the video and used it as a gambling promotion. I did not know FanDuel would do this. I did not consent to it, and FanDuel had no right to do it."
Harper said that he wouldn't have made the video if he had known "anything about Terry or his situation, or about any alleged 'partnership' between Cameo and FanDuel."

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Philadelphia Phillies slugger Bryce Harper said he did not know a Cameo video he recorded would be used by FanDuel as a reward for a VIP customer who later sued the sportsbook, saying it took advantage of his gambling addiction.
The Philadelphia Inquirer reported last week that a fan named Terry Thompson had wagered $18.5 million with FanDuel and was eventually rewarded with a personalized video from Harper.
In the video, Harper addressed the fan by name and even mentioned the man's young son. Harper shared a screenshot Monday of the request on Cameo, an app that allows users to pay celebrities to record custom videos.
"Had I known FanDuel's true intent, I would not have made the video," Harper said. "The same is true had I known anything about Terry or his situation."
The Inquirer reported Thompson lost $1.5 million, according to a lawsuit that the Public Health Advocacy Institute filed in March in Common Pleas Court in Philadelphia on behalf of Thompson and against FanDuel and DraftKings. Thompson also was reported to have lost money to DraftKings.

At the start of the offseason, the Golden State Warriors made changes to their coaching staff. Shortly after Steve Kerr agreed to return to the Bay Area for another season as head coach of the Warriors, a pair of **** istants exited the Bay Area. Former Los Angeles Lakers coach Frank Vogel is expected to join Steve Kerr and the Golden State Warriors this season.
Vogel will serve as an ****** ociate head coach on Kerr's staff, according to ESPN's Shams Charania, and will fill the vacancy left by Terry Stotts.
Stotts and Jerry Stackhouse were two of Kerr's top ****** istants this past season before departing. Another longtime ****** istant, Chris DeMarco, had also left Kerr's staff in January to become the New York Liberty's head coach.
Vogel is expected to serve as the Warriors' primary defensive game-planner as part of his new role. DeMarco and Stackhouse were in charge of those responsibilities in recent years.
Vogel was most recently with the Dallas Mavericks as an ****** istant under Jason Kidd. He was head coach of the Lakers from 2019 to 2022, leading the franchise to its 17th NBA ****** le in 2020 after beating the Miami Heat in six games while in the NBA bubble due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

ESPN's Ben Solak named second-year cornerback Keyon Martin as his 2026 breakout candidate for the Ravens, a surprising inclusion among a group that included better-known names like Terry McLaurin and Nolan Smith. Solak admitted that Martin was "perhaps the deepest cut of this entire list" and noted his explosiveness before writing:
Martin is undersized for an NFL corner (5-foot-9, 170 pounds), but new coach Jesse Minter was comfortable playing smaller corners during his time as the Chargers' defensive coordinator. Quick eyes and even quicker feet in zone coverage are Minter's preferred traits, and Martin has those.
At his size, Martin likely can't play anything but the slot. The Ravens do love three-safety sets with Kyle Hamilton in the nickel, but when they want a quicker cover man, Martin has a chance to supplant Chidobe Awuzie as the third corner on the field, keeping Marlon Humphrey on the outside.
Martin impressed as an undrafted rookie last year and could benefit from the Ravens' infusion of secondary coaching talent, including Minter and defensive pass game coordinator Mike Mickens. With each passing day, it looks increasingly unlikely that San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk will end up with the Washington Commanders. Well, at least in 2026, anyway. Washington has long been Aiyuk's preferred destination once his release from San Francisco became official. However, Aiyuk has yet to apply for reinstatement and has declared he will not report to the team for training camp. That means the 49ers are under no obligation to release him.
With or without Aiyuk, the Commanders could use another veteran starting receiver opposite Terry McLaurin. Deebo Samuel remains available. As does Tyreek Hill. But that name most **** ociated with the Commanders is four-time Pro Bowler Stefon Diggs. Diggs, a DMV native, hasn't hidden his desire to return to the region and play for his hometown team.

The Yankees are off and away with their 2026 draft class. After selecting electric left-handed starter Hunter Dietz out of Arkansas at No. 35 overall, the team decided to double up on the position in the second round, but with a twist. Instead of a college starter with proven results in an incredible conference, they hit the prep market.
British Columbia’s own Sean Duncan was selected at No. 63 overall by the Yanks out of Terry Fox Secondary School in Port Coquitlam, just outside of Vancouver.

The Atlanta Falcons were somewhat careless with their money during the last few seasons under former general manager Terry Fontenot. While fans will likely never get over the team giving Kirk Cousins $100 million before drafting quarterback Michael Penix Jr. one month later, Fontenot had some free-agent hits as well.
The Falcons signed star safety Jessie Bates III, who has been stellar over three seasons in Atlanta. Those around the league scoffed after the team signed Divine Deablo last year, but the veteran linebacker was among the best defensive players on the roster.
Cornerback Mike Hughes has been solid and Darnell Mooney looked like a steal after his first season with the team. However, current Falcons general manager Ian Cunningham was hamstrung by the mistakes Fontenot made, and could only sign bargain-level free agents in the offseason.
Cunningham has done a good job of retaining talent, though. He extended both Drake London and Kyle Pitts, which brought Atlanta's salary cap ******* e up to $37.9 million.

Washington Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels is all about business. While his good friend, San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk, continues to alienate the rest of the NFL with his social media antics, Daniels gathered several of his teammates in Los Angeles for some work ahead of training camp.
Wide receiver Dyami Brown has posted several videos this offseason showing his progress since re-signing with the Commanders in March after one season with the Jaguars. Brown shared a video earlier this offseason featuring Daniels, wide receiver Terry McLaurin, running back Rachaad White, and others.
Recently, Brown and others returned to Los Angeles to get more work with Daniels. But this time, several other teammates showed up too, including McLaurin, tight ends Ben Sinnott and John Bates, receiver Jaylin Lane, and others.

NEW YORK (AP) — Former Miami Heat guard Terry Rozier wants to play in the NBA while he fights sports gambling charges that sidelined him last season. Bail conditions that bar him from contact with certain players and limit his travel could complicate his potential return.
U.S. District Judge LaShann DeArcy Hall on Wednesday denied a defense request to modify Rozier's bail conditions so he can practice and play with potential witnesses as long as they don't talk about the case. The judge said it would be impossible to police Rozier's on-court conversations.
She admonished Rozier for already violating the no-contact provision of his $3 million bond by sending a text message to a person he was told not to communicate with. Rozier was contacting the person to tell the person he was on the no-contact list, DeArcy Hall said.
"What that tells me is that he believes he knows better than the court," DeArcy Hall said at a hearing in Brooklyn federal court. Rozier, she said, "violated the court's trust with that text message."
Rozier averaged 3.9 points, 3.9 rebounds and 3.5 ***** ists per game in 10 NBA seasons, four and a half of which he spent with the Charlotte Hornets before he was traded to Miami in 2024. He remains a free agent after the Heat released him in April. An arbitrator ruled in February that the Heat had to pay Rozier his $26.6 million salary for last season.
